Really diverse in terms of many different genres showcased on one album. Can definitely see why it's a very popular album, especially with "newer" sounds like inspiration from folk and cabaret infused in this era of music.
I can definitely see the influence this could’ve had on early indie and electronic music, but ultimately with the overly repetitive beats and melodies, plus the uninspired spoken lyrics, it’s just not for me. Only song I slightly enjoyed listening to was North American Scum.
Had a lot of catchy songs, but the longer I listened the more the songs sounded the same.
Honestly I was scared and anxious while listening to this. Nightmare fuel. You’d have to pay me to listen to this again. As a piece of art very interesting postmodernism, as music to listen to its terrifying.
I was wondering why it was giving Arctic Monkeys/The 1975 vibes, then I looked up the bio and saw The Last Shadow Puppets is a collaboration band between the Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner and the Rascals’ Miles Kane. It definitely has that alt-ish vibe that Alex Turner brings, and the addition of the orchestral sounds throughout the album make it a lot more well-rounded. Giving cowboy spy movie vibes (see Vincent’s review). Overall I really enjoyed it, top 3 songs from the album are Calm Like You, Separate and Ever Deadly, I Don't Like You Anymore.
A great cinematic album. Songs flow smoothly from one to the next and have many spoken word moments throughout that create the visual and audio atmosphere the album is trying to convey. Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is because it is ultimately not music I would typically listen to or enjoy listening to.
Thunder Road: Harmonica. Piano. Guitar. I have no feelings about it. Also why does it kinda sound like a Christmas Song at some times...
Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out: Honestly the brass is serving... Bruce sounds like he's gonna need a lozenge after singing this though
Night: Christmas music again.
Backstreets: Bro you need to stop straining your voice, it's okay you can sing normally no one will judge you (I will).
Born to Run: A classic I guess. The sax is iconic though, so I'll forgive little Brucey.
She's the One: Hated this, hope she didn't hear this brother.
Meeting Across the River: I feel nothing. Next.
Jungleland: If you can't get across the message you wanna convey in less than 9 min then don't be a musician please. Sidenote: The Rat.
Overall: Not the biggest fan of this kind of music. Feels too “American”, but the use of brass instruments carried the sound throughout so can’t give it a 1.
The flow of the songs made it really easy to listen to. Loved the majority of the lyricism (minus the occasional gay slur), but the spoken word parts in between songs were a bit jarring and didn’t tie the songs together very well.
Where Do The Children Play?: 5/5 Although there's not a big change in melody, it feels almost nostalgic listening to this. The build up at the end wraps up the song perfectly and I think it's a great intro song to the album.
Hard Headed Woman: 4/5 Love the strings and the change up in tone halfway through. Not the biggest fan of the ending but still overall pretty good.
Wild World: 5/5 Hey I know this song. Idk where from but oh well. (Edit: I looked it up and apparently it's from Skins UK Series 1? Also some lawyer/cop show maybe?)
Sad Lisa: 3/5 Liked the violin but overall kinda meh
Miles From Nowhere: 3/5 A little more chaotic sounding that I'd prefer but still okay
But I Might Die Tonight: 4/5 Actually really enjoyed it, but it was super short unfortunately
Longer Boats: 4/5 Very chill, calm, and catchy.
Into White: 4/5 I'm usually not into very slow repetitive songs but the instrumental in this one got to me.
On the Road to Find Out: 3/5 Kind of just decent compared to the other songs on the album
Father and Son: 5/5 Very emotional, make-a-me cry ;(
Tea For The Tillerman: 4/5 Perfectly rounds out the album, in reference to the first track, but could be a bit longer to tie all the themes throughout the album together.
So I would usually put something funny but I really enjoyed this album. Sowwy
I really enjoyed listening to most of this album, particularly the funky instrumental throughout, and it should deserve a 4/5 if it weren't for two things. Firstly, the 10 minute title track, and first track, of the album. It was pretty unbearable to be completely honest. Secondly, if we were to remove the first track, we're left with 5 songs over the course of 28 min. Way too short of an album when the sound of the other 5 songs are honestly really nice to listen to. Wish I could give a 3.5, but I cannot in good conscience give it a 4.
Be (Intro): 5/5 Holy shit. Not sure what I was expecting since I've never actually listened to Common, but this was an incredible first track. (hip hop video game idle music)
The Corner: 5/5 First of all, the flow throughout each verse and how this bitch kept making up fucking rhymes that just kept fucking going... dude. Plus the addition of the spoken pieces right after the repetitive "I wish I could key this feelin"... iconic
Go!: 3/5 I enjoyed the melody and sound of this one, but the lyrics and repetition of "go" just made me kind of bored.
Faithful: 5/5 A song about fucking god, who's also a woman? Work. But honestly, I was going to give it a 4/5 because I really liked it but it was just missing something, and then the choir came in at the end and I was like, yeah that's the something it was missing.
Testify: 5/5 At first I was kind of annoyed by the singing in the background, but after a first listen and re-listening to it a second time, I think it fit really well. A whole Law and Order episode in a two and a half minute song? Love that.
Love is...: 4/5 Really enjoyed the refrain and the lyrics, it was missing something extra to put it at a 5 though.
Chi-City: 5/5 Similar to Love is... I thought the refrain and lyrics were great, but this time it had that extra oomph to give it a 5.
The Food: 3/5 If this was just Common, it would probably be at least a 4, maybe even a 5. But because it have Kanye and Dave Chapelle on it, I just can't really enjoy listening to it as much.
Real People: 5/5 Saxophone break, plus calling cops Nazis? I don't even care about anything else that deserves a 5.
They Say: 3/5 I'm sorry, this is John Legend?? Oh wait Kanye's back, great. Outside of Kanye being on this, couldn't really get into this one as much as the others, but it's not bad at all.
It's Your World: 5/5 Similar to the Corner, the flow/lyrics on this one is incredible. I would normally scrutinize the length, but seeing as it's labeled as a part 1 and 2 song with a distinct separation, I can forgive it. Because this is the final track, and it has a clear callback to the first track, Be, throughout the second part of this song, it wraps up the album beautifully.
Overall I think this album really surprised me. We’ve had some other rap/hip hop albums here before that didn’t really resonate with me, and even when their lyrics were great, the melody and instrumental to accompany them were not. This one though (note that it was released in the early 2000s vs the others that were in the 80s/90s) has great production behind the music in addition to the lyrics.
meh
San Francisco Bay Blues: 1/5 dude half this song is him giving context and introducing the song…
Ol’ Riley: 2/5 ah I get it now… ramblin Jack… because he rambles in the beginning… also this is totally that song from the black and white Betty boop skeleton song when he’s in hell… you know what I’m talking about
The Boll Weevil: 2/5 this is Vincent when he sees a bug, he just sings this song to it
Bed Bug Blues: 3/5 Bed Bugs sure is mean and evil. So true brother
New York Town: 2/5 “Old Partner and Road Buddy” do you think they ever explored each other’s bodies?
Grey Goose: 1/5 LAWD AND LAWD AND LAWD… awful
Mule Skinner’s Blues: 3/5 sick harmonica bro
Cocaine: 3/5 pretty mellow song for the subject matter lol
Dink’s Song: 1/5 Spotify played a cover wtf
Black Baby: 1/5 …………….um
Salty Dog: 3/5 I like dogs :)
Overall not my favorite album we’ve gotten so far, actually probably one of my least favorite BUT I can see how this album could have been super influential in terms of early folk music and whatnot.
Airbag: 3/5 Pretty decent, interesting addition of electronic aspects in a mostly "rock" song, but overall just kind of chill
Paranoid Android: 5/5 Super diverse sounds throughout, going from chill Muse-ish vibes to harder rock and guitar solos and shit. Loved it
Subterranean Homesick Alien: 4/5 More on the psychedelic rock side.
Exit Music (For a Film): 5/5 Sounds like music for movie credits, so the title nailed it. Really like the background vocals throughout. Oh hey its that song that I know that I always thought was Muse.
Let Down: 4/5 Nice listening music, pretty chill, not a huge standout though
Karma Police: 4/5 See above with "Let Down"
Fitter Happier: 4/5 Spooky, I hated it and loved it at the same time. Okay Hal 9000 go off.
Electioneering: 4/5 Loved the guitar in this one especially.
Climbing Up the Walls: 3/5 Enjoyed most of it but near the ending got a bit chaotic for me.
No Surprises: 4/5 OH THAT FUCKING SONG. Super sad song tbh. Witerawwy Cwying rn.
Lucky: 4/5 Similar to Exit Music with the background vocals and Electioneering with the guitar.
The Tourist: 3/5 It's okay, goes on a bit too long for me without changing much. Understandable as the final track though.
Overall I enjoyed it, found some songs I would definitely give another listen to, but not necessarily the kind of music I would regularly listen to.
5 songs. 44 min. One song says (parts 1-5) and the other says (parts 6-9). What else am I to expect from Pink Floyd honestly.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond: I am a 50 year old man drinking my fifth glass of whiskey at a bar in a grimy part of town. I had a hard day at work and find my life unfulfilling. I refrain from looking my family in the eyes, especially my wife, who I know is having an affair behind my back. Likely with the neighbor while I try my best to stay away from home as much as possible. My children hardly call me their father anymore, already accepting the fact that I am dead to them. I smoke a cigar before downing the rest of my whiskey. The bartender, who I see as my only true friend, raises their eyebrows, asking if I want another one. I nod, and inside I regret it. I could be a better man, a better father, a better husband. Sadly, all I hear is the wailing of an electric guitar with slow tempo percussion accompanying, remembering a life I never had and always yearned for. (This is all in the first eight and a half minutes of instrumental.... RIP) Too long obviously. Once the vocals arrived I kind of got into it then it was another minute of instrumentals. Haha jojo reference.
Welcome to the Machine: 7 min song. Great. You know that sound when you shake a laminated piece of paper. Yeah that. Over and over again.
Have a Cigar: Smoking is bad.
Wish You Were Here: I had half my headset off and legit thought the first minute was just straight silence.
Shine on Crazy Diamond again: Vocals start at minute 5
I actually would've really enjoyed this album if the songs were so long. I know that's Pink Floyd's thing and kinda common around this time in this genre but still. Kinda wack.
CRAWLING IN MY SKIN
Definitely rating it out of nostalgia. Since it's not something I would really listen to anymore and the songs can be a bit repetitive, I can't give it higher than a 4.
Sorry Vincent.
I hated this.
No
This album is all background music. Not any misses but not any bangers tbh.
Although I wasn't the biggest fan of some of these songs, it's hard to deny the impact this album has. I did enjoy some of the songs, but some of the less popular ones I did find pretty goofy overall. Would be a 4 if I didn't have a huge ick about the beatles tbh
I love the general sound and vibe these songs have, very smooth, funky, and groovy. Nothing in terms of incredible standouts to me though.
Fear of Music? yeah I'm afraid I'm not a fan. Ahahaha hahaha haha ha. But honestly the songs just blended into each other and didn't really go anywhere to me. Nothing sounded awful but just really couldn't get into it.
Funky and catchy instrumental but the vocals became overly repetitive and annoying at times
I mean... it's ABBA. C'mon. Their music is always fun and upbeat, although not the most revolutionary, they're definitely a favorite for obvious reasons.
Honestly I feel like I've heard of the Pretenders a lot but never knew what they actually sounded like. I was super pleasantly surprised.
Oh that song by Pearl Jam. The Pearl Jam Song. EEEEEEVEN SADSKLDFSJFLJLSADJAL. ya know?
Really loved the raw vocals and smooth R&B melodies. The songs were a bit too horny for me but I guess it's in the name of the album so that's on me.
It's like if the Beatles were even less interesting (I know, just try to imagine it)
Enjoyed the guitar and vocals but ultimately it's just not something I'd regularly listen to.
This was like if dad rock could hold up to today, especially compared to others in the genre they at least diversify their sound enough over all the songs in the album to sound individual but cohesive.
Wow it's like the same song over and over again. I hate it. Was gonna say it doesn't deserve a 1 because it doesn't sound that bad then I saw Jailbait... yikes
Didn't hate it, actually enjoyed a few songs. I could definitely hear eminem's influence in the production of several songs, but not really something I'd consider an essential album to listen to.
It's another case of every song sounds the same to me. Doesn't sound bad but it is just the same song 17 times.
no
Fine, catchy and easy to listen to.
Very chill 80s vibes. Not the most exciting but I still liked it.
