R.E.M.I feel like this is a 2.5-2.75, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this. The hits are true hits, so I’ll give this a 3. Good harmonies, good musicianship.

I’ll give this 2 because she has a nice voice and is a good singer. I do not understand this record. Pop/synth/dance is really not my style, but there are also horns at times? Tough start to 1001.
Any album with papa was a rolling stone gets at least a 2 in my book. This was surprisingly good the whole way through. A more soulful temptations than I was expecting. What can I say? Funky music sho nuff turns me on.
Meh. If there was 2.5 stars, this would get it. It’s bang average - didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Cool drums (drummer here) but nothing really stands out.
Still working on my rating system. The hits are bangers and the filler tracks are all decent. No bad songs. I guess that’s a 4. Blistering guitar solos. Metal before there was metal. Pretty cool.
Easy 4. Some great tracks (parklife, end of a century, bank holiday) and all above average imo. Great mix of musical styles. You can see even in a “rock” band how this guy went on to do Gorillaz.
I struggled with this rating. Do most Beatles albums get an automatic 5? I think there are between 15-17 songs on this album which are absolute bangers, including some of the greatest songs ever written. Even though not every song is on par with the best Beatles songs, I’ve decided it’s dumb to penalize this album for having some songs that are not on par with the greatest songs ever written. If you gave any other artist a year to write 31 songs and put them on an album, it’d probably stink. People knock this for its varied musical styles - I actually think that’s its greatest asset.
Solid album. Good old fashioned R&B. Some good, some great.
Lovely voice and great compositions. Should’ve listened to Nick Drake a long time ago, but never did. Glad 1001 gave me the chance.
Didn’t love it - didn’t hate it. Some bangers, but I like the first Police album more.
This is not bad. In fact, I really can see what’s good about it — the genre is not really for me.
Easy 5. Country/folk isn’t necessarily my genre, but I absolutely loved this album. I’ve heard about John Prine for a long time, but never dove in - glad 1001 gave me the chance. Favorites include Paradise, Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore, and Pretty Good. Every song is good and there are great session players on the record.
Decent guitar stuff on here. Psychedelic jam band - meh.
This stinks.

I considered giving this a 1, but I’ll say 2 because these some innovation here in terms of blending styles. A lot of this is repetitive and maybe even slightly annoying to listen to, but the mix of Indian music, English pop, and hip hop is a big swing.
Changes is an all time great song.
Solid. Notable tracks include morning will come (dope), red light roll on, and why can’t I be free.
Really good. Song are very long, but some really strong tracks - lilac wine, mojo pin, lover you should’ve come over, forget her. His cover of hallelujah is one of the most beautiful records in history.
5 - no question. This is one of the greatest albums of all time and has always been my favorite Bowie album. If there’s one knock against this, it’s that the lyrics are silly at times, but this whole things start to finish is incredible. Notable tracks include changes, oh you pretty things, life on mars, queen bitch, quicksand, and the bewlay brothers. A++
There was a time in my life I would’ve really loved this. It was more punky than I expected, but it was still just okay. I don’t think this deserves the same score as Bjork, but I don’t think it deserves a 3. 2.5 stars.
Appreciate the artistry - nice voice. Don’t totally love the style. Notable tracks include the mess we’re in (feat. Thom Yorke!)
Quite good. Great bass player. Brings the funk. Notable tracks include show you the way, walk on by, and them changes.
I got this for Christmas when I was 13 and have loved it ever since. Great mix of rock, punk, and hip hop. Beasties are legends. Notable tracks include Rhymin & Stealin, Slow Ride, Girls, Fight for your Right, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Brass Monkey.
Solid. Nothing too memorable, but all pleasant.
Elevator music
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Notable tracks include is this it?, the modern age, someday, last nite, hard to explain, trying your luck. Great band.
I actually really liked this. This style of music is my shit. Notable tracks include I’m not your stepping stone, there she goes, ss396
Better than expected. Interesting style variations - I knew La Grange, but wasn’t expecting good blues too. Notable tracks include Waitin’ for the Bus, Jesus Just Left Chicago, and La Grange. I’d give this a 3.75.
This wasn’t bad. I didn’t love it either. Good melodies overall. Notable tracks include Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf.
36 Chambers is one of my favorite albums of all time. I never heard anything off this album. I thought it was good, not great and wanted to like it more than I did. Granted, I wasn’t 100% focused on the lyrics when listening. Still love meths style. Notable tracks include bring the pain, release yo delf, meth vs. chef.
I’d give this a 2.5. I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it either. I don’t think there’s anything innovative here, but I could see why people appreciate it in its time.
Alright. Pretty good. I liked it better than the other PJ album (which everyone seems to think is better). More aggression here I think. I thought differently about this album when I found out it was her debut, which I’m not sure what to make of. Solid 3.
I went into this thinking Alanis is just yesterday’s Taylor Swift, but there are some absolute bangers on here, including perfect, hand in my pocket, head of feet, you learn, and the other radio songs.
A ton of musicality - tasty guitar playing in general. Notable tracks include when seasons change, so in love, love to the people.
Adele really has a beautiful voice, but I feel like this songwriting on this album is very pedestrian. There are certainly good pop songs on here, but overall it’s kinda meh. There are a lot of other songs of hers not on this record I like more. Notable tracks include hello, send my love, and love in the dark.
After the first two songs, I thought to myself this might not be as bad as I feared. Wrong! This shit is whack. One step closer, I am loathe to admit, is actually a decent song.
It’s fun, but it’s not….good. It’s fine. Notable songs include rock lobster and downtown.
Jimi is so good and revered for very good reason. More variance of musical styles that I expected. Notable tracks include bold as love, one rainy wish, little wing, wait until tomorrow, up from the skies. Little wing is one of the best songs of all time.
This was better than I expected, but I gotta say - the falsetto voice is annoying. I heard I believe in a thing called love when it first came out and thought it was very effectively used in that song, but he sings in that falsetto voice every chance he gets in spots that make no sense. It’s like he found out he could do that and sees himself as the next Freddie Mercury. I believe in a thing called love and Friday night are legitimately good songs.
It pleases the ear, but why does it exist? Totally inoffensive.
I’ve heard this many times and it really just is timeless. I don’t know if it’s because I was a young punk, but I found this so enjoyable. Notable tracks include London Calling, Hateful, Rudie Can’t Fail, Wrong ‘em Boyo, Koka Kola, Spanish Bombs, Train in Vain. That many bangers earns a 5.
There are so many solid songs on this thing it’s not even funny. The two opening songs back to back practically knocked me over. Notable tracks include I looked away, bell bottom blues, nobody knows you when you’re down and out, key to the highway, and Layla. Bangers galore. Not a 5 for me because the cover of little wing offended me a little, to be honest. Maybe that’s dumb, but I’d call this a 4.4905.
You could see how this band ended up becoming great from listening to this album, but this didn’t really do it for me. Brian Mays guitar playing is good and obviously Freddie Mercury sings his ass off, but this is just fine.
Classic 90s hip hop. Ice cube comes hard in the paint. Notable tracks include today was a good day and say hi to the bad guy.
This stinks. This person’s voice is super annoying. I was really tempted to give this album my first 1, but there is some nicely arranged piano on here, which gets it a 1.75, which I’ll round to 2.
This is really fucking awesome. I was admittedly not excited about listening to an album in another language, but the jams are so tasty. Notable tracks include A Minha Menina, bat macumba, Adeus Maria fulo, and senhor F.
Cool - some nice takes on songs. But I think a cover album can only max out at a 3.
I know people my age are supposed to be obsessed with Radiohead, but I found this to be incredibly mediocre. There were a few bright spots (knives out, dollars and cents, life in a glasshouse), but the rest of this just felt like a mish mash of shit. It wasn’t terrible, so I’ll go 3.
I came into this biased against Kanye as an artist and a person. I will devote the beginning of my review to expressing my annoyance at the huge number of people who are coming here to call Kanye a nazi or an antisemite, state they refuse to generate him 0.04 cents in streaming revenue and then leaving a 1. The point is to listen the album and rate THE ALBUM. If you don’t want to listen, skip it. As much as he should be dragged for expressing his dogshit opinions, he is also wildly mentally ill and off his meds, ya know? Anyway, this thing is a fuckin’ banger. I always genuinely thought Kanye was lame and overhyped, but this thing is really fucking good. The production is really solid, hooks are good, rhymes are tight. The only reason I’m not giving this a 5 is because Kanye himself is objectively a below average rapper (boring flow - I can name 10 better skilled rappers off the top of my head) and the skits on here add nothing (possibly subtract).
This is a 3.75. Great for a live album - excellent quality. There are songs everyone knows, the other songs are decent to good, and there is really tasty guitar playing here.
Bleh. I can see why she goes on tour and makes $1,000,000,000 but this bored me. Some of the songs were catchy I guess, but it’s mostly pop drivel.
Classic Paul Simon. Beautiful melodies, nice arrangements - what else could you ask for. Incredible opening track. Notable tracks include mother and child reunion, run that body down, peace like a river, me and Julio, and paranoia blues.
Downright classic soul. Opening with let’s stay together sets the tone. Other notable tracks include so you’re leaving, what is this feeling, never found a girl.
There are so many bangers on here, I wanted to give this a 4, but the more I think about it, I think this deserves a 3. I do think the fact this is a debut album makes it more impressive, but I still haven’t decided if I want to take that into account for my own rating system. More than a feeling is a very good song. I’ve heard it on the radio 40000000 times, so it didn’t excite me very much. Peace of mind and long time are also really well known songs, but I think the fact they’ve received so much radio play hurt this here. If I was hearing this for the first time, I think I would’ve been more impressed. Cohesion is a good quality for an album to have (in my opinion) but even at just 8 songs, with a few exceptions, this all just starts to sound the same. There are really rippin guitar solos and great harmonies, but I found myself as bored as the songs were good. I usually don’t write this much. Does that make sense? This album had great songs, but it was also saved by the fact that there weren’t more of them. I’m torn between a 3 or a 4, but I’m calling this a 3.4905.
I tried really hard to connect with this, but I just couldn’t. I don’t know if it’s because I’m an English speaker (because Os Mutantes was one of my favorite albums yet on 1001), but this didn’t do it for me. No musical innovation, regular singing voice. Just kinda meh.
This is obviously really really good. Favorite tracks are so what and Freddie freeloader. Conceptually, I want to give this a 5, but I think this is a little too avant garde for me to give this a 5. I think a huge part of what I find to be so infectious about music is melody, particularly vocal melody. This is really good jazz and clearly these are under talented musicians, but I think it inherently lacks something for me that makes it a 4 and not a 5.
I gotta say - after reading a lot of people destroying this album in the comments, I was really not expecting much. This thing slaps for what it is. Old man Elvis is not going to bring much musical innovation, but although it’s a bit kitschy, there are a lot of good songs on here! Notable tracks include wearing that loved on look, long black limousine, after loving you, I’m moving on, in the ghetto, and suspicious minds.
This album is a fuckin’ vibe man. These songs go hard. Great musicianship and really fun songs. Notable tracks include p-funk, mothership connection, supergroove, handcuffs (lyrics notwithstanding), and give up the funk. Make my funk the p-funk.
Just fine. The weight pushes this to a 3.
Meh. I was a childhood punk and I appreciate this for what it is, but this was kinda bleh.
This probably has too many songs and could do without the 10 minute blues jams (though they are really good), but there are way too many GREAT songs on here to not be a 5 (sweet lord, wah wah, isn’t it a pity, what is life, if not for you (great Dylan cover), run of the mill, Frankie crisp, waiting on you all, all things must pass). Best Beatles solo album? Probably. Global rating on this is criminally low.
This here….this here the blues.
This is fine funky disco. Le Freak is an all timer.
I guess it’s alright for synth pop, synth pop is just really not my thing.
This is not a perfect album, but it’s damn close. So many great (GREAT) songs for a debut album. Jimi absolutely shreds on so many songs and the drummer is so good.
This being one of the highest rated albums on here, I really had high hopes for this. I’m honestly struggling between a 3 and a 4. The guitar playing is exceptional. A 5 song album is kinda whack Arnold’s though. The hits on here are so good though. I think my final ruling is a 3.505.
I was very pleasantly surprised how bluesy this was. I know The Who, but I don’t really KNOW the Who, ya know? Now these blokes are covering James Brown? The fuck? I’m here for it.
The production on here is really good, but I’m not really sure using soul samples is all that innovative. The wiki for this record says it’s one of the best rap albums of all time. The fuck? Jay Z is just a mediocre rapper and the fact that one of the best songs on here disses Nas (a far superior rapper) and one of the other “best songs” features Eminem (a far superior rapper) kinda says it all.
I started this a few days ago (I’m way behind) and was just really not in the mood. I’m glad I stopped and restarted. This album is great. A lot of really nice composition and he’s got a cool voice.
This just isn’t my jam. I was going to give this a 2, but I thought the last two songs saved it.
Very pleasantly surprised. This here the desert blues.
Generally biased against a lot of (mostly) instrumental stuff, but the musicianship here is too good.
