Pleasant. Acoustic guitar and nice vocals. Haven’t been challenged yet. Like jack Johnson without the douchiness. Short, 28 minutes. Enjoyed it. Not sure I’d ever play it again
Own it. Good stuff, you can hear how it influenced early 80s music
Summary - didn’t enjoy this as much as really any of their other work. Rough start, a band trying to find its sound.
good times - hell of an opener. In hindsight you can tell this isn’t a rookie band. Thumping drums
Babe leave you, nice second. Big change of pace. Plant belting out range, powerful
Torturously slow Shook Me, with some raw edge to Plant’s upper, almost strain. Ooh keyboards! Ok this song just won’t end
Dazed and confused: OG, trippy. Album version is nice. Live sticks around far too long
You’re time is gonna come - this is some good shit
Black mountainside- this album is all over the place. I thought jimmy had a plan. This is demo - level stuff. Like what they’d release if Jimmy passed and they put together posthumous songs
I can’t quit you - blues masturbation. Good. Again, a band trying to find their place
How many more times - riffing goodness. Slop. Sloppy slop splashing around. Love it. Also very masturbatory. Also endless no longer love it.
Let’s go Stevie, this one is on many ‘must listen’ lists
Nice work, I can see how this is beloved. I may revisit a few songs, but overall not my style
Double album. Liked the first to second. Some electronic sounds, reminds me of beck. Got slow immediately with 3, then plodded through a lot of very nice but rather similaresque easy listening songs. Some really good stuff especially second disc, more upbeat. Fantastic album overall, glad I’ve heard it. Probably won’t revisit but a song or two.
Unfamiliar with Stones albums, as I’m not a fan. Looking forward to this
Summary: wasn’t a fan. Maybe it’s a 60s thing but all covers album as a debut, with only one ‘safe’ original song is not how I’d do it. Musicianship was fine, but if I were an alien visiting earth and you played this for me, told me it was one of the greatest all time band, I would be unimpressed
Wait this is all covers? One original song? So strange back then. Zepp 1 had more than a handful (but not all -1!) Aerosmith had Train early on
Curious how Zepp got labeled the biggest thief of blues after hearing this. Guess it’s not considered theft if you just flat out play covers *shrug*
Tell Me - only original tune. Nothing special even for 1964. Hard meh. Nice little guitar solo, plinky
Used to enjoy playing this in guitar hero (drums)
Recently gave this a listen again on my own, casual. Let’s give this a whirl!
Real time notes: clean production. Good medium groove to start. Like the vibe. Such 80s vocal tone ugh
Second song - bopper.
Third - so 80s. Another just everywhere ‘hit’. This album is easy to play in the background, heard every song so far a million times before
4- experimental offbeat ditty. Probably skip if I were playing for me
5 - 80s pop crap sound. Skip
6 - another hit.
7 - and another. Nice little bass flick at the beginning. This one has a little more to it than the rest. Good song, has some instrumental depth
8 - ooh production tricks. Nice dark start. This is a good vibe
9 - vibes into this one. Nice. Big finish.
(Lost original notes)
I adore the GH album, looking forward to this
Summary; these are all top tier. Not a bad song in the bunch, and loaded with hits. Ends with an impactful news reading over silent night.
Short album, doesn’t overstay its welcome at all. Bravo
Initial thoughts - 36 songs over 1 1/2 hours?!
First song out the door nails the Monkees sound
Couple songs in. Nice stuff. Good background music
Shades of Grey is genuinely fantastic
Zilch is 30 years ahead of its time mind blown
I tried hard to like this many years ago. Didn’t stick. Relistening now, it’s noise to me. Plus one star for sheer passion, drive, creativity, and execution. Nailed it. 3*
‘I only said’ is stellar
* I hated this. Deeply unimpressed. Zero stars if I could
Don’t know this one. Let’s go!
Ok so first ‘ecstasy’ fueled album. Not necessarily a draw for me
Not listening to the deluxe album. Sticking with the original 10 tracks. Dumb Spotify not offering older versions
Two songs in, this isn’t doing much for me yet
This is shit. 1 star. Drugs are bad m’kay
Brain Dead - this is Rick’s Schwifty voice, shit on the floor
‘Wrote for luck’ best song on album. Actually listenable.
Do it better is repetitive garbage
Best part of the last song is this is now over. This was absolute shit. Maybe influenced later bands. I don’t care to look into this further. I really cannot appreciate this. This was bad enough that I am not putting on more music. I’m just annoyed by sound now. Good riddance
5 star just terrific
Shine On is probably their best overall song. Not my favorite, but best
Such a loving tribute to an old friend. Listen to this one
Don’t know this one. Let’s go!
Good shit 4 stars so far.
Rocking start
Enjoying this few songs in. Nice seasoning of saxophone, possible flute? and harmonica. Got a piano going on.
The vocal delivery isn’t my favorite but he can sing fine for what’s being attempted
It’s like the vocal inflections are over delivered. Like a cruise ship singer. See: out of the blue. An upbeat foot tapper of a song but that vocal delivery doesn’t fit. I think part of the ‘issue’ is they’re a little forward in the mix as well. At least compared to modern mixes
Bitter sweet lol this is getting a bit operatic. Like Jason seagal’s vampire rockopera
Tryptich is that a harpsichord? Probably synth I’d assume but baroque wasn’t expected. More operatic
This album kinda falls flat second half, huh?
Wrap up with a bit more of what made the first half more listenable. What the hell was the middle of this album? So strange. I really liked it up to Bitter Sweet
Brit punk.
This isn’t doing much to change my mind that there is only one punk song. This is a more listenable than most, plus one star
Landlord has a nice solo.
Ok overall a more listenable album than much I’ve heard from the genre. I probably didn’t enjoy the overall listen, but I didn’t dislike it either
Holiday in Cambodia had actual depth and range to the music. No surprise it’s the one I’ve known this band for.
Early REM I’m less familiar with. Let’s go!
Not the most late-80s sound. That’s a good thing
Brighter production than I expected. Crisp. Almost a little faith no more -esque
Good first song. More Rock sounding than later REM. Liking this (Monster is my favorite of theirs, I like their harder sound). Less whining
Song 2 is generic but pleasant. I like the walking bass line
Song 3 well this is just REM. like if you asked AI to make an REM song. Again, nice fairly prominent bass line.
4 is pleasant. Nice little solo, doing something in there
Definitely getting some early alternative influences in here. Lots. This is good shit
End of the world. Well known song.
One I Love. Also a major hit.
This album is quite good. This is why I do this. Find some really good shit I never would have. Gotta get through the shit sometimes though
Fireplace 5/4 good job. Oh that sax going off
Lightning again sounds like Faith No More (later I know)
Bird king - good, REM sound.
Firehouse - wrapping up a really good album. Bravo
9/10 stars.
Unknown. Let’s go!
2 stars. I get why this this is impactful, but is it good?
Song 1. Unremarkable rockabilly. Strange stereo imaging. Narrow
Nice twidly solo
2 there’s the punk. I get how this is post punk.
3 drum beat I’ve always skipped
4 oh that beat again. Glad they moved on. And it’s back
5 androgynous lol
6 rock and or roll
7 yeah unsatisfied
8 instrumental? Yeah do that, that’s better. Wide echo on production, still narrow soundstage. It’s odd. Oh they’re singing. Still a decent song
9 punk meh
10 melodic it’s not bad so far
11 last song. Not bad intro. The lyrics overall are meh
Outside my normal genres. Let’s go!
Good stuff. Really enjoyed it. Put it on while doing some work, ended up playing it a few times. Almost too short, going to explore the catalog for more. Nice work, Waylon Jennings
Legendary. Love the instrumentation.
Speaking of legendary, let’s go. I got into them with Black. I know, I know. I’m sure I’ve heard most of this before.
I’ve always disliked the production.
1st nice guitar intro. Now for the drums I don’t like. lol.
2) legendary. Nice break in the middle. This album has a really nice musical balance with the metal. Nice acrobatic solo
3) know this one from Primus. Rhinoplasty
4) know this from one of the guitar hero. Drums are fun. Nice guitar. Little dissonance. More musical lyrics to start. I’m a fan
5 never heard this one. I can see why
6 same, liked this one better
7 Orion fucks.
Finishing off with damage inc. Aight.
Solid ending
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the album in full. I can see why they have so many fans. Fantastic shit. Wish the production was a bit more full.
Some serious musicality shown at times. People say they sell out when they leaned into that and became mainstream, but it was always there, they needed to shed their metal shells.
Technically fantastic too
Never even heard of this. Too bad about their shitty record label. Let’s go!
This may not be the album for me.
Whoever made this list really likes British bands
Spike island the first listenable track
Virgin Velcro is intriguing. Best so far
Don’t know this one. More modern.
She sounds / sings young
Upbeat first song. Good stuff. Nothing blowing my mind
Some nice songs in here. I have no idea why this is on the list. 3 stars
First song legendary.
Extremely well known voice
I like the instrumental body and soul
Basin street sounds like gigolo to start
lol jump jive and wail also legendary.
Nightrain also instrumental?
I’ll be glad when you’re dead is a hell of a title. Band wails
Fun album. Bet this was an absolute blast in the 50s
Song 4 was surprisingly ‘modern’
Song 6 got a good vibe.
7
This is good. Not something I’ll revisit, but a pleasant listen.
4 star
Not for me. Not sure why this is here. Blah
Getting rather bored with this
Enjoy one of their albums, the ine with Backwater. Know a few other songs from nirvana unplugged
First song a lot punk. Reminds me of suicidal tendencies, 10 years later
2 instrumental wasn’t expecting that
3 this is a little more ‘country’ sounding than expecting. Liking this ‘not punk’ sound
4 nirvana covered it. This singer doesn’t have the strongest voice
Going thru, this is more like the album I have, enjoying this
Good cymbal Oh Me.
Lake of fire could be on Bleach. 1983. The direct influence of this album on Kurt cobain makes this a must-listen, that it’s quite surprisingly musical otherwise is a bonus
I’m a mindless idiot - sublime sampled this wow
What to do - bass reminds me of Violent Femmes. Couple other times too.
Auoura borealis another instrumental. 3? 4? This is a pleasant album minus the couple punk songs
4 stars good influential album. Wow. Couple punk songs hold this back from 5.
This should have been bigger. Great album for a list like this.
Ok yeah Jeff’s dad. Died at 28.
- Good voice. Good jam. Sax solo. I like this
2) funky af
3 is every song about sex?
4 good jam again
Hong Kong bar good shit
Strong finish
Fine I’ll listen to Adele
Song 1. Holy shit Adele. I’ve heard this but never on anything good. Wow
2 heard this. It was everywhere. Not sure I knew it was Adele.
3 these songs have great production and dynamic range. Need this on vinyl
4 nice. Grew on me
5 a bit too much vocal acrobatics but lovely song
6/7 good vibes good weight to the music
9 beautiful
Nice finish. No complaints. 5 star nailed it
Oh hell yes. Let’s go. Crank it!
1970 y’all. Ridiculous.
War pigs. Heavy. Ominous. Bass going crazy under the solo. Opening with such a long song sets a mood for the album
Paranoid - nothing to add that hasn’t already been said
3 atmospheric broody dark. Not high energy but nice psychedelic and artistic
Iron man - coming off Planet Caravan, maybe thinking it’s the end of side A, THUMP THUMP THUMP reminds you of what you’re listening to. Back in the pool, everybody! That breakdown. Melting minds
Exceptional track order so far
Side B - electric funeral - similar to war pigs starting side A. sludgy.
Hand of doom- dynamic journey. Exceptional
Good finish. Good groove. 5star
I’m familiar with Court. Let go!
Fun bells
Oh hell yeah. Make it weird. Probably a good time to mention I’m a Primus fan
Been enjoying the musicality of this. But the vocals on Exiles is bad. Strained, out of tune.
Talking drum oh yeah
4 star
Heard this but haven’t listened to it
1) f*** yeah
2) f*** yeah
3) f*** yeah
4) aight
5) f*** yeah
5 star
Lost my notes. This was nice. Unexpected, glad I heard it
Don’t know this
1) that’s this?! What’s above ‘legendary’?
Exceptional album. Instantly into my library.
Hard to miss CCR
1 classic rock staple. Great groove. Great vocal delivery.
2 fine. A little repetitive
Liked the blues one
Not sure what chooglin’ is but good jam in the middle
Fine album 4 star
1) know this one. It’s pleasant
2) know it
3) know it. Huh. Lots of hits on this
5) what a lovely song.
7 another hit
8 same song different beat lol
Overall very nice production quality. Her voice is very pleasant and controlled as well
10 upbeat boogie
Wraps up with another absolute classic. 5 star
I love these guys
1 speechless
2 I can’t review this album. I enjoy these songs too much
3 Thank the universe for these two making music together
4. Nice horns
Overall fantastic album.
I mostly know Tom through his work with Primus
Starting out I get a feeling this may be a slow burn rather than an easier listen.
Definitely a unique sound
My rating does not come from a place of wisdom.
Pretty rocking overall. Enjoying this. I was expecting more hair-band theatrics. This is more groove-based. I will revisit this, liked it a lot
Before I press play just want to acknowledge yet another 80s Brit pop album. yay
It’s fine. More listenable than many.
Can’t give it 4 star, gotta be 3.
Wasn’t expecting much. Punk, but female vocals. Rather pleasant.
Space Invader goes hard
Kid was really good
Let this one play. Keeps getting better as it goes on
I wasn’t a fan of the first 4 or so songs. Much like that Meat Puppets album, it really got better when they got they punk out of the way
4 star
115th fever dream lol
Overall, exactly what I thought this would be, but I liked it more than I normally do Dylan. Not my style, but I’ll give it 4 stars
Good recording quality. Piano based singer songwriter bombast. A bit of a caricature, maybe wasn’t back when recorded. Feel like the era for this type of music has long psssed
Nothing catchy
2 star
Never heard of the artist
IGY this has aged incredibly poorly, as of 2024 time of this review.
Meh 2 star
Came out about the time I drifted away from terrestrial radio
Heard the first song, never did much for me
Yeah that low fi throwback sound, lumped in with the darkness, jet, white stripes etc.
Another overrated Brit punk album. Not surprising for this list.
2 star blah
Ok. I know this is well regarded. I am a fan of steward Copeland, but through Oysterhead. I am not a fan of sting. Let’s go!
1) gets repetitive
2) ooh atmospheric drums. Oh it’s about dinosaurs. Ok. And now Sting is shrieking.
3) fade in? Those aren’t common for a reason. Sting’s voice upper registers is painful to me.
4) 7/8 time. A bit different. Spoken (tortured) vocals about his mother. Ok
5) first one I’m enjoying, kinda stereotypical police sound
6) yeah that sound. This is a good hit.
7) and an absolute classic. Sting should sing and not shriek
8) never knew the name of this one. Also got airplay.
9) finger also I’ve heard. Pleasant
10) pleasant
Better than expected. Sting should keep the vocals managable. Musically and production top notch. 3 star, 4 without vocals
Don’t know this. Let’s go
‘We have Silversun Pickups at home’
Sounds just like them but softer and significantly less challenging.
Pleasant voice
There’s not much here. Superficial. 2 star
Well everyone knows Elvis. Gotta admit never heard an album though.
1) good guitar. I’d say in 1969 this was on the cusp of being outdated upon release
3) yeah that’s Elvis
4) more Elvis
6) I like the more upbeat songs backed with a band. The solo piano songs are classic Elvis but I don’t listen to Elvis
Gentle on my mind is nice
In the ghetto is classic
And suspicious lies is one of his best, which is saying a lot. Ooh a fade out fade back in. Tricksy
Don’t cry daddy has a bit more ‘modern’ sound. Opening instrumentation
Kentucky rain good
Ends on a crooner.
Glad I heard this. More variety than expected, a real solid album right before the explosion of bands like Led Zeppelin
4star
Well everyone knows Dolly. Gotta admit never heard an album though.
1) this is nice.
Early morning breeze is a highlight for me
Never heard of this band
I can see why. These aren’t really catchy songs. 28 songs over 41 minutes. 2 star and they’re pushing 1
Striped white jets is a real song wow they can do it.
An entire album with no groove whatsoever.
4th album, coming off the incredible Permanent Vacation. Early Aerosmith was a force
1) banger
2) banger. Nice solo, Joe
3) don’t know this one. Verses are too frenetic for me, chorus is nice and heavy
4) fine, nothing exceptional. Again really nice guitar work. I like where they took things 1976.
5) another song where the speed and rhythm of the verses grates, but the breakdown section grooves hard. Some really creative and talented musical folks, especially Joe.
6) heavy. Get it.
7) bluesy heavy. It’s alright. Again this would have gone hard in 1976
8) could just be because they’ve been around forever, but they have a decent amount of ‘generic Aerosmith’ songs. This is one. Again the breakdown section is the highlight
9) wrap it up boys. Or just whine across the finish line.
Solid 4 star. Really strong guitar work, good job Joe
I’ll probably be familiar with all these songs. I don’t know many full albums. I should do a chronological playthru, get better context for the progression of their sound
Good sound quality (remaster) but the stark stereo mix dates the album
Nowhere Man good harmony
Bit of a slog through the middle of the album.
Run For Your Life - wtf
Haven’t heard this in decades. Owned the cd at some point. I know it’s well regarded
Yeah, I remember this. Overproduced. Angst-driven cringe lyrics. I’m aBoUt To BrEAk ok relax bro
Don’t forget to add turntable scratching. Some spoken word verses. Then the other guy scream-cries the chorus. Knockoff 311, get therapy
I’m actually having a really hard time taking this album seriously.
Is every song just angry white dude music?
This album has a very narrow niche. Unless you’re a somehow still-angry white dude feel free to pass
Groovy artwork. Don’t believe I’m familiar with this
Monkees / beach boys vibes. Harsh stereo separation
Overall not surprised ‘time of the season’ is the only one I’ve heard. Weak 3 stars, pleasant enough
Is that a kazoo?
Why have one tone deaf singer when you can have two?
I don’t think Mr America was too concerned with this one
Getting a hint of Iron butterfly .
This didn’t do it for me 2 star and that’s generous
Lovely album. Not sure why it is a must-listen but it was an enjoyable one
I’m liking this. Not normally an 80s music fan, but this is pushing early 90s sound. On the forefront.
A bit endless by the end
Felt longer than it was, a lot sounded the same
3 star
