David Bowie
The album as whole is quite amazing. Wildest sounds I’ve heard in an awhile and while there are definite queer undertones for some of the songs. I feel this album being the first to really take off Bowie as a whole. I love to see the inspiration he takes from Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground. You can really see his talent and energy start to take off. I do seem to really draw more towards the first half of the album with songs like Life on Mars or Oh! You Pretty Things. I still see how this album is one of the greats and really stands the test of time. It still having some of the more cheerful and also thought provoking songs making it this really great piece.

Pure Rock. I am really tired while listening to this but the music is like a jolt of electricity to brain keeping me awake. Amazing vocals a great album through and through. The album touches on a lot of dark topics like death, drugs and addiction. I truly think this album raw and emotional depth making not only a great concept album but an amazing rock and metal album.

Is This It
The Strokes
Day 3 of listening to album of the 1001 everyday. It’s really interesting to listen to a bands first album and hear the beginning of what would begin. While it is short it makes up for it for having just so many great songs back to back. I think the lyrical is depth is there however it’s not as prevalent compared to the vocals and music. It’s a great album with its main stand out be the lead singer amazing vocals. Every song has so much raw emotions. However I do feel the lyrics get overshadowed by the great sound. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, I just know the lyrics could be such a bigger focus and makes me to want to listen to more of the strokes. Overall the legacy of the album far outweighs many other albums and it’s great to see a album inspired by The Velvet Underground (which has a huge legacy for inspiring others) end up inspiring others as well.

Tapestry
Carole King
Day 4 of listening to 1001 albums everyday. I genuinely don’t know what it was about 1971 but so many amazing albums come out that year. And Carole King’s Tapestry is no exception. The album is just classic after classic over and over again. There is really not much else to say the vocals are amazing throughout the whole project. The lyrics are beautiful and touching. This an album that I’ve have never heard of and I am so glad I got sit down with it and give it a listen.

Pink Floyd
Day 5 of listening to an album everyday. This is the most creative ever I have listen to in a while. The cohesiveness, to the instrumentation, the 12 minute long songs. The album impressively says so much without many lyrics. The song Shine On You Crazy Diamond being about their formally ousted band member Barrett. To the album talking about the music industry and how evil and corrupt it can be. This is one of the greatest albums I’ve have ever listened to and I am glad I got to hear it.

Metallica
Day 6 of listening to these albums everyday. Master of Puppets is a genuine perfect metal album. With the politically charged lyrics to the 8 minute long track without a single lyric. The album delivers with some of the greatest Metallica has to offer and knocks out with every song. There is not one song you can point at on this album and really say it doesn’t bring that amazing energy.

Jungle Brothers
Day 7 of listening to 1001 albums one by one everyday. It is definitely very upbeat and happy album which is definitely a refreshing look. The album was the very obvious beginnings of groups to later shape and experiment with hip hop. From De La Soul to Tribe Called Quest being on this album and contributing to it. This showed the very first glimmer of success for the Zulu nation.

Day 8 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. I am not really sure what to say about this album that hasn’t already been said. I mean it is one of the most perfect alternative rock albums you can get. From the lyrical depth on each song to raw vocals and energy. This album is unmatched with sheer brilliance and creativity. Every song feels so unique in a rather almost dark way. This album does tackle a lot topics from things like homelessness, drugs, mainstream audiences. Every is dark in its own way and I think that’s what makes this album so interesting. It’s sheer variety in every song but also still no veering so far off that it’s sounds so different from its overall tone of the album. It is truly an amazing album that deserves all the respect and recognition it gets.

John Grant
Day 9 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. John Grant is one of the most creative writers I’ve have ever listened to. This album is a lot of things but every single song has a way to captivate you and so many ways. A lot of this album is talking about his homosexuality and his relationships which feel very touching and personal. But also understanding the context of this album and its John trying to understand himself after leaving his band and thoughts of suicide. This album bounces around a lot but I think that is why it’s so great it not exactly a project that needs to be all one idea and that’s what makes it perfect.

Bummed
Happy Mondays
Day 10 of listening to 1001 albums everyday, one album at a time. I’ll start with saying I usually give an album a benefit of the doubt and try understand where it is coming from. Or maybe even put myself in the time period and this album coming out during then. However none of those thoughts help bring this album anywhere close to actually being good. The writing and vocals are obnoxious and awful. The only thing that keeps from giving this album a one is the constant good psychedelic funk. However it is unfortunate that the lead singer voice over it sounds horrible and doesn’t allow for that music actually come through. Even during a 6 minute track where it’s suppose to let the music breathe they decided to add his vocals and it ruins it. I don’t like this album and truly don’t get the point of some of these lyrics. Some are meant to be like they’re writing stuff to make people mad but it more comes annoying than anything. To some it the best way I can, I am bummed a band called Happy Mondays made feel so awful on Wednesday.

Day 11 of listening to 1001 albums one day at a time. Honestly this album lives up to its name. It’s crazy, it’s sexy, it’s cool. The album has a lot of classics like waterfalls or creep and I think with those being the most popular they probably say the most on the entire album. It has a great mix of hip hop infused into to some tracks, love the Andre 3000 feature at the end. You can definitely see this album laying down the frame work for other R&B groups to come and it’s very influential. It’s a fun and sexy album that I think does everything it set out to do.

Sheryl Crow
Day 13 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. Sheryl Crow was not someone I expected to come up on this list but I am glad she did. The album feels like a jukebox of sorts really highlighting Sheryl talents and it’s really interesting to hear that in her first album. The writing on the songs is pretty stellar, from talking about her being caught in an era of a republican president and liberal parents. To the writing on The Na-Na Song, then What Can I Do For You. While I don’t think this album is perfect it’s still got some great hits through and through and make it a great album to give a listen.

Day 14 of listen to 1001 albums, one day at a time. It’s awesome to listen to the beginnings of what would come for this legendary band. I think the best way to just sum up this album is the album cover. The pure explosion and energy from the Hindenburg tells exactly what this album is. It also being of the rare albums that had full creative freedom during this time is awesome.

Pink Floyd
Day 15 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. This might be one of Pink Floyd’s best album to date. It is definitely a huge album being a literal double able. The story it tells is so gripping and is truly an album that deals with isolation and pushing others away. It’s has to be such a difficult task to tell a story but also at the same time create music that is great in its own right. Which in true Pink Floyd fashion they manage to fulfill both of those with amazing tracks. While the character of Pink is based off Syd Barret you can tell a lot of the ideas of closing your self off come from Waters. A remarkable album with a masterful story.

Day 17 of listen to 1001 albums, one day at a time. This album is long, a bit longer than it needed to be. It’s interesting on the second half but enough to truly make this album amazing. It’s alright, it’s fine. I get was 1975 and electronic music wasn’t anything insane but I do wish this album was just like 10 minutes shorter. It drags and so moments are just boring. Day 19 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I don’t know how to feel about this album. It’s sort of all over the place with what it wants to be. Rock, reggae, post punk and while that would be interesting it seems to be the thing that hurts it the most. I do think there a couple solid tracks on here but not enough for me to truly love this thing. I do think a lot of the production on this album is pretty good and really makes it shine where lyrics lack. Overall it’s decent.

Day 20 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. Amy Whinehouse was truly one of those artist that was gone way to soon. This album articulates how great of a singer and writer she was. Frank Ocean
Day 21 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I had already listened to Channel Orange a little while ago but I thought why not go again. It felt a lot like going back watching a movie you had already watched. You were able to say along with some lines. But there were moments that grabbed, moments that hadn’t focused on much before. I think I truly had a surface level understanding of this album on first listen. Even song is so sonically beautiful it’s hard not to get lost in those sounds and truly listen. The way Frank Ocean talks about social class and how he can make it so whimsical and then remind how selfish it is. Or on Crack Rock talking about drugs addiction and how you’re outcasted, the government and people don’t care about you. Although we’re Frank Ocean shines is his songs about relationships. Thinkin Bout You, Pyramids, Bad Religion, and Lost. These touch a lot of different topics from unrequited feelings and people trying to work to help their partners. What I didn’t know about the album was that it comes from Frank Ocean’s grapheme color synesthesia. He associates the color orange with the time of summer and that were a lot of the ideas for these songs take place. There is something to be said about the way these song are just ear candy and transport you to another world. Channel Orange is an amazing that I didn’t give enough credit the first listen and I am glad I gave it another listen to truly understand how remarkable of album this is.

However it is truly great to listen to. I had to couple of talking heads popular songs but listening to one of their albums helps me understand why they are such legends. Day 23 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. The Go-Go’s is one of the pop bands you had no clue you knew until you hear them. I genuinely never knew who made We Got The Beat, turns out it was them. They also made an entire album full of bops and hits. Every song on this album gives so much energy and really radiates that new wave sound. It’s hard not to love this album, the punk attitudes with great pop instrumentals. I’ve never been more happy to listen to pop album. The Go-Go’s are officially one of my favorite pop bands. I do want to mention the album is awesome. I thought it was a painting at first because of how it looked but turns out they took that photo and then returned those towels to Macy’s. Great album.

The Bones Of What You Believe
CHVRCHES
Day 24 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I’ve really had the chance to give a synth pop album a listen so I don’t know what to expect. I must say I really enjoyed it. For a debut album, it really shows what this group is capable of and how well they can deliver. While I think there are some songs that stand up to some of the other, there are all pretty great. Mayberry is able to use her voice to cut through the production so well and a layer of emotion to synth that usually isn’t there with most other synth music. Where this album of course shines is the production as a whole from being great and punchy to the last song feeling like I’ve been transported to another dimension. It’s so amazing how they are able to blend the singing of members with the electronic and synth sounds to great a pretty good album.

Britney Spears
Day 25 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. While I do think this a pretty decent debut album I also know Britney didn’t have a lot of control on this album. While it’s super commercial and poppy it’s also can feel a bit fabricated at times. There are a probably only about two or three songs on here that really do keep that hit commercial sound. Although I still think this album is influential enough for the rise of Britney Spears and how much of a pop icon she would become. Decent album overall and really shows it would be inevitable for Britney to become as famous as she is

Day 26 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I think there is a reason that Crosby, Stills & Nash never decided to do a band name, because they didn’t need to. They could stand out on their own but together they just lifted each other up. This album is perfect representation on that. It takes some influences of blues and folk to make a touching and unique piece of work. I do like knowing how influential this one album would be not just for other artist but CSN themselves and where they would from there. A great debut and pretty nice album.

Wild Gift
X
Day 27 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. Wild Gift is a sense a really wild album. It’s a punk rock album that doesn’t exactly stick to punk. It takes a lot elements of blues and r&b but I do think this album a fair amount to say. From it talking about the adult book store John used to go to or criticizing Elvis Presley for joining the military. However I think the beginning and end of this album seem to be its strongest and the middle is unfortunately a bit weak. I do still enjoy this album, it’s rare you get to hear a early punk album like this and I liked it.

It is an amazing rock album that really set the sound for CCR down the line. Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Spiritualized
Day 30 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I think to truly appreciate this album you have to understand that the lead singer of Spiritualized, Jason Pierce was dating Kate Radley, the bands keyboard player. They had broken up and Kate had secretly married another guy. I know Pierce has said most of the album was written before this but I find it hard to believe with it being the central aspect of this album. The lady singing on the beginning of the track is Radley. The first half of this album is someone falling in love and dating that person but then when we get to Home of the Brave we learn how codependent they are on this person. It’s no coincidence that the song The Individual is the most noisy track then we get the Broken Heart that has this most beautiful ballad and heart shattering lyrics. Then Cool Waves letting that person go. Though I think with the song, Cop Shoot Cop talks about how much that pain still hurts and how they are still in love with this person. I think Neva Chonin from the Rolling Stone said it best, “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space doesn't try to hide its uglier aspects – which, in the end, is what makes it so damn gorgeous.”

Day 31 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. This album is slow, like really slow. Sometimes it works other times not so much. I think some songs didn’t really need to be 5 minutes long but that’s just me. I thought a lot of the folk type blues was good and for the late 80s with country music it’s a nice refreshing sound from what you would usually hear from country. However I don’t think this album is really anything special though. I think it has good songs but it becomes boring unfortunately.

The Gershwin Songbook
Ella Fitzgerald
Day 32 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. I have to be honest I didn’t listen to the full version. I truly don’t think you should either. Don’t get me wrong you can, Ella Fitzgerald is probably one the greatest singers of the 50s. However I chose to listen to the Very Best of The Gershwin Songbook which I think condenses it and a pretty nice 50 minutes long album giving only the greatest of Fitzgerald. The Gershwin Songbook is a great album and Fitzgerald not only inspired so many other singers to come but also set the tone for the 50s with all she did in this album. If I could use an album to describe a time period it would be this album. Personally I think it’s fine if you choose to listen to the whole album, the very best or parts of the whole album. I don’t think Fitzgerald ever really intended someone to listen to whole thing in one sitting. So I think for a 70 very old album it’s still is so fantastic.

Day 33 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. I hadn’t listened to much Willie Nelson before listening to this album. I knew he was a pretty much legend in country for his outlaw country music. I think that pretty much is shown through this album. I have always enjoyed story telling albums and while there isn’t a ton of story to tell through this one, I still liked it. Willie Nelson just does a good job at presenting a character and talking about them. The only thing that wasn’t entirely impressive for me what the production. I felt it could’ve been a lot more interesting and felt repetitive at times. Overall good album was a decent story.

Radiohead
Day 34 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. The Bends by Radiohead as a whole is the band really trying to show they are more than just a one hit wonder with Creep. I’ve have mixed emotions about this album it’s a bit all over the place but I think that lends towards the album. This an album that in my mind is trying to prove something by showing the world they can do so much more. So while this album has a pretty wide variety of sounds from track to track, Radiohead is ultimately giving that iconic Radiohead sound that would become so beloved. Not only would this album be a pretty big inspiration for a lot of other artist to come, it would lead the band into making albums that pretty would call perfect and a masterpiece. The Bends sets out to prove Radiohead is more than Creep and I think it does more than just prove they are more, it’s shows they are a band that will be remembered for a long time.

Day 36 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. This album is the most perfect mix of metal, 90s rap and punk. It is your face and so amazing and loud. Everything that this album does it makes sure you hear whether you want to or not. Not only was this album revolutionary for mixing 90s rap with metal in such a great way but also has a lot to say. Wake up is my favorite track that talks about the counter intelligence program the FBI used against MLK and Malcom X but also they use Hoover speech in the song. Then in the final song Freedom when they say the line “Anger is a gift” they say it quiet to throw you off because all you’ve heard so far is them yelling. Linkin Park
Day 37 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. Linkin Park will I think always have a pretty big impact on music as whole for bring Rap Metal to the mainstream. Hybrid Theory is a pretty wonderful display of this band. While I don’t think the entire is as solid as it could be it’s still a good album that shows this interesting sound for the 2000s. It a pretty dark approach for a first album and I have to respect while this album is a bit mainstream it is at its core an album with some heavy topics. I liked it and it’s cool to see Linkin Parks beginnings.
