Prophets Anthem is incredible. Lots of great little recording tricks on the album - delay, a reel speed up of a guitar solo, using only vocals as a kitschy orchestra. I never really understood how much May contributed - writing and singing lead. What great musicians. Only Bohemian and You’re My Best Friend for singles.
I find it quaint how cutely tongue-in-cheek British this album gets. I love the classical style piano solos and the eclectic range of genres/pastiches.

Didn’t get a chance to listen too close but had it on as I fell asleep. So many iconic riffs. Would like to double back and check out the lyrics. Explorative and incredible, but just not exactly my jam. I did love the journey and transitions of energy.
Ugh every rhyme makes me wince. I hate it. I guess I can respect it if I’m comparing it to like early 1900s blues which did a lot of this stuff and then Dylan comes in and juices up the form. I get it. Yes it’s important but it just sucks man. It just sucks.
Incredible. Never realized how similar their piano playing is to Ben Folds. So much of this seems to be what heralded us fully into 70’s Classic Rock. Little tricks here and there like the single reverse guitar notes. Some hard rocking stuff and also some softer beautiful stuff. They hit the full range. Love the acoustic guitar use throughout too. Feels directly influential to Boston. So much with the synth stuff too. It’s good!!
Listened to the first couple tracks. It grew on me. Some real sweat on the stage British punk with some nice weird synth tones, clear present drums and interesting guitar textures. Fun, even if it’s not really my cup of tea.
Groovy! Didn’t realize The Kinks had so much in common with like Help!/Revolver era Beatles or Monkees. Indian influences on Fancy. Definitely some filler songs in here (You’re Looking Fine). Most of these songs are the kinda fluffy love songs John Lennon poopoo’d about the Beatles. Sunny Afternoon tho!
Gonna be more stringent on ratings. More like restaurant stars.
Nice, solid Counting Crows style stuff. The musicial journey that N.Y. takes is lovely! Some real emotional, broader lyrical stuff here that feels like the kind of lyrics I’d write if I wrote good stuff. Yeah..I’m into this! Gotta hold onto this band!
Quality jazzity jazz! Hard to imagine this not already existing in humanity when it came out. Got a little same-y toward the end.

I mean it’s great for the times and just fine by today’s standards. A lot more folk fantasy with woodwinds and sitar than I expected. Incongruous sounds that I didn’t love together but all the same it was I’m sure groundbreaking.
Fantastic album! Excellent quality singing and soul. I feel like discovering ppl like Solomon Burke is exactly why I’m doing this project. So solid. 3/5
What do I even need to say
Yeah this album seems iconic and definitive for that 90s grungey pop-punk sound. Hard to believe there was a world where Song 2 didn’t exist. Fun album I will return.
Meh. I mean I know I’m wrong I just wasn’t very grabbed by it. I appreciate what a trailblazer he is but I just don’t really dig this album.
