Murmur by R.E.M.
Sep 25 2024

I liked it enough, I never really listened to R.E.M. at length before there were a couple songs that I felt just flowed into each other that could be good or bad but I just thought it was okay. Overall I was happy to have the experience with more R.E.M. songs

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Sep 26 2024

The first song (Maggot Brain) was an instant add. The whole album was an incredible listen and was so different than anything else I normally listen too but it fit so well into my music taste that made want to find other funk stylings from the 70s. The last song (Wars of Armageddon) was really good until the last like minute. I cant believe that a funk song from 1971 would have too many sound effects but that really was the my issues with that song. I don't think this album was perfect but I was really into and that last minute sort of soured it just because I personally loved the riffs and jamming of the first songs versus sound effects. There could be very good artistic reasons for those but they just didn't hit with me. Regardless I would still highly recommend this album.

Gorillaz by Gorillaz
Sep 27 2024

I have never heard any other song from this album that I could remember so I was basically listening to it for the first time ever and it was a blast. Every singe felt very distinct even the remixes had very different feelings than their original counterparts. I don't think this will be an album that I sit down and listen to all the way through any time soon, there were several new songs I added to my favorites that I was very happy to add to the mix (M1 A1, 5/4, Double Bass).

Harvest by Neil Young
Sep 28 2024
Fly Or Die by N.E.R.D
Sep 30 2024

I think I really liked this album a lot. I ended up listening to it on repeat about four times while on the computer just unwinding. There is an era of music I think this fits neatly into and that 2004 date does not surprise me at all. Its hard to get into the technical aspects because it overall just took me such surprise. I read some reviews which I don't want to do for any other album but something I saw the idea of these musicians subverting the expectation by creating such a different style of music than they normally do. I don't know if it was that exactly or the lack of sleep but I greatly enjoyed this album all the way through, I mean my god, Lenny Kravitz. Amazing.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
Oct 01 2024

It didnt save my notes!!! I will try to remember everything I typed but I think the this album is absolute incredible, I think there is a certain lightness or weightlessness to the drums, horns, and even piano notes in most of the songs I am think primarily the first two (You Aint The Problem and Rolling) that are just incredible. Because the lightness is done without sacrificing any softness the music and the vocals are still very front and center but its all very bright and upbeat. Then you have a song like Final Days that adds a nice chunky and dirty guitar sound and it just fits SO WELL. The whole album was an incredibly easy listen and has a lot of accessibility in the absolute best way possible that I plan on recommending it to everyone I know. I know I have to try to limit my 5's in the future but this one really felt deserving of the rating. The easiest 5 of my life ( so far),

Parachutes by Coldplay
Oct 02 2024

This was super "meh" for me. A big part of the rating system for me is if I end up letting an album play more than once without feeling the pull to grab my phone and change it to something else. The last few have had a lot of moments where I realize its played through and its looping back and I am not mad at all about it. This....did not have that, I was pretty acutely aware of the moment the first song started again. I don't think the songs were "bad" they just were all kind of boring and they felt "safe". I guess its no surprise but I've never listened to much Coldplay and this album is not going to change that around for me anytime soon

Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis

So, I was really confused by something because when I searched for this artist on Spotify I couldn't find this album, not exactly anyway and so I used the Spotify link in here to take me to the web player to then listen on my phone which played the album I found in the first place. WHICH, I have come to learn was a Re-issue with bonus tracks, something I did not know until writing this! Another groovy instrumental(ish) album which I have so come to adore. I loved it a lot and listened to it many times. Though, I have to give it four stars because I think that while I greatly enjoyed it, I think this one requires more of a "right headspace" to listen to. Its been cool and rainy where I am the past few days and this album was perfect for the late night into early morning routine of getting ready and then unwinding. I also personally love this kind of music, but I don't think I know many other people that would want to listen a whole album of this like I do. So it gets a solid four stars, the music it does, it does WELL and there is quite a bit of variety in the songs (hence the ish earlier). This is already too long but the album is very chill, very groovy, and well worth your time if you like music from this era.

Armed Forces by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Oct 04 2024

It was pretty good! It was nice to have a change of a pace with late 70s pop album. I probably wouldn't listen to it again but I did listen a couple times through and I appreciate the semi political messaging especially given time and the creator. I guess this was also the album/tour that basically ruined Elvis Costello's career which was pretty interesting to read about. I did like the songs I liked how upbeat they sounded again some pop/rock music as a nice refresher. I didn't have any stand out favorites, I don't think this genre really lends its self to big jam breaks or solos like jazz or funk or even more of the classic rock songs Im sure we will listen to later on. All the music felt distinct but in a good way.

Elephant by The White Stripes
Oct 05 2024

Actual 5/5 EASY. I never listened to the full album before but I literally had it on repeat the whole day. What a great listen, the biggest stand out (outside of the obvious, Seven Nation Army and The Hardest Button to Button) was honestly the song Its True We Love One Another. I LOVED this song, I thought it was the cutest way to end this album. I really dug it as a nice garnish or cherry on top. It was cute bantery song that I 1000% did NOT expect on a White Stripes album. Also, Little Acorns!!! I mean there is so much to say but really this album I think basically because an instant classic in the music scene and has stood the test of time.

Let's Get Killed by David Holmes
Oct 06 2024

I liked how creative this album was but I just don't think I could get in the right headspace for it truthfully. I should revisit this because there was a high level of art and work that was obvious but I just really listened it to once and that was it but I could see a world where this gets multiple listens and four stars.

Real Life by Magazine
Oct 07 2024

I dont think I have heard of this group ever before and I liked them a lot, I liked this album a lot. It was nice introduction to Magazine. I listened through several times all the high points! Its getting 4 stars though because about halfway through I think the 4th listen I just wanted something else. So clearly its good and held my attention but some of the earlier 5 stars were what I listened to that whole day but here I did switch off of it after awhile. Still a great album and still one I fully plan on going back to.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Oct 08 2024

I really did not care for this album. Honestly this gave me very similar vibes to that Coldplay album we listened to a few days ago. I listened to it one time through and it just didn't really hit right at any point and I was pretty over it about halfway through. Im hoping other Arcade Fire albums are on here because I have heard great things about them over the years. I could see why people liked it, but again same with Coldplay. Just not my cup of tea I think.

Oct 09 2024

I really liked the the first two songs but overall it was okay. I liked it more than the Arcade Fire album I think.

Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye
Oct 10 2024

Okay he was SUPER in his feelings on this album. I mean it was REALLY good. This is definitely NOT an album you put on to just chill and study to but man you really could feel the emotion in the music. I heard he was going through his divorce or he wrote it about his divorce and that reminds me about a Bruce Campbell video I watched recently where he said you never want to hire an actor going through a divorce because they don't care about life or anything. I feel like maybe that is the opposite for musicians because this was an incredibly deep album. I give it four stars though because again, there is almost 0 re-listen ability. It was like a good book or a good show in a way, it just was a great journey but I don't think I want to go on it any time soon.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
Oct 11 2024

I liked this album A TON. I sadly am behind in the albums so I could only do one listen through but man it was a joy. Perfect for a rainy day honestly. When I get caught back up I am 100% throwing it back on.

Oct 12 2024

It was good! Not a ton to say, I liked it and how upbeat the songs were. I was shocked at how many songs were on the album and how short it was. But still, I ended up really only giving it one listen through.

B-52's by The B-52's
Oct 13 2024

I shockingly really liked this album more than I thought I would. I definitely thought this group was more meme-y because of Love Shack and Rock Lobster but I REALLY liked Planet Claire. Sadly that was the biggest stand out and my praise really ends there. I don't think they are as meme-y as before but I still don't think they are my taste. At least not this album. I get why it's on here for sure, the group is super popular and very pretty famous, at least I knew who they were when I was younger. I guess I just wanted more songs like Planet Claire and less songs like Rock Lobster. Still, I enjoyed the album overall quite a bit more than I thought I would. I really thought this was going to be like an easy 1 or a 2 but I struggled to give it a 3 or a 4. I think I am going to settle on 3 ultimately but it was a much harder choice than I thought it was going to be.

Diamond Life by Sade
Oct 14 2024

I liked it! This felt like a proper 80s pop album in all the best ways possible. It was smooth, it had bops I had it on repeat all damn day! I mean it, I had a ton of fun with this album, was it like high art? No, but the music was really good and had those nice jazzy tones that I do love so much plus it kept me in a high spirit all day so you cant beat that. It wasn't perfect but very deserving of a 4.

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Oct 15 2024

It was okay, I mean its the beach boys like they are kind of like The Beatles? They are obviously super famous but I feel like everyone just kind of hears their music their whole life. That's about how I felt listening to this album. The music was good, boppy. But it was also what I expected? Which feels a little unfair I guess but it is true I didn't hate any of the music but I was a little bored. I fully understand their influence though and I have to give them points for that.

Manassas by Stephen Stills
Oct 16 2024
Oct 17 2024

I loved it, it was a nice long album and I was there for the whole time. Also Otis "Blue" absolutely genius. Im sadly starting to do these reviews after the fact so I wish I could think of something more concrete to point out but I really did enjoy the whole album. I only listened through once but I was excited for every song that played and I never once felt bored and felt like I was waiting for a song to finish.

Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby by Girls Against Boys
Oct 18 2024

I did not care for this album. I just don't think I like this genre. On Wikipeida they are described as a "post-hardcore" band and I guess that tracks. I just didn't vibe with the album too much at all. I did like one song called Billy's One Stop but that was about it. I could see how if you liked the genre you would like this album but it just was clearly not for me.

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Oct 19 2024

Its Johnny Cash, I mean its such a classic. The banter, the songs it was amazing the whole time. A perfect album artistically? Nah. It was a really fun time though and I think its one of those music things that gets referenced so much in pop culture I think you owe to yourself to listen to the album at least once

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Oct 24 2024

" I get it now" -- Frank Reynolds. I loved this album, I wish I could listen to it more but I am like two weeks behind this challenge. Fantastic listen, love them now.

Suede by Suede
Oct 28 2024
Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Oct 29 2024

Some very bluesy Doors from Morrison. I loved it a lot, thinking back to these songs I think my dad liked this album a lot because three of four of them were quite familiar to me.

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Oct 30 2024

I love some Violent Femmes but the last half of the album was honestly very boring.

Aqualung by Jethro Tull
Nov 01 2024

I was SHOCKED at much I liked this album. A FREAKIN FLUTE SOLO. Also Aqualung I feel like was referenced on an episode of the Simpsons and I thought about every time I heard the "sitting on a park bench.." still overall it was a great listen.

Ten by Pearl Jam
Nov 02 2024

I knew a guy who LOVED Pearl Jam in college and his roommate would always start to sing "EVENFLOOOOOOOOW" whenever he started playing something and I get why. This album was fine but so boring. If it wasnt for Guitar Hero I dont think I would have cared about any of these songs.

London Calling by The Clash
Nov 03 2024

Very bleh, I dont know if its a time thing but this albums was just very boring to me.

Black Metal by Venom
Nov 04 2024

I dont love Metal but this was a nice listen, I didnt hate it by any means I just wasn't super into it.

Raw Power by The Stooges
Nov 15 2024

I listened to the 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition on Spotify which had A TON of extra songs which I really liked. I just like this kind of music a lot and vibed with a lot more to the point that I got to disc 3 before I really felt the 2 hour and 45 minute length. Overall it was a great listen and I think the extra actually helped the rating because hearing Bowie sing and some live version enhanced this particular album.

Low by David Bowie
Nov 16 2024

I mean it was a David Bowie instrumental/prog rock album. I absolutely loved it.

Either Or by Elliott Smith
Nov 18 2024

I dont know if it was the rainy atmosphere or just being so close to Thanksgiving (aka fall city) but I loved this album. It was nice and slow Elliot Smith had a smooth and chill voice. Overall I really dug it.

Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Nov 19 2024

I mean its master of puppets this is THE Metallica album. It was great, fuck Lars. 10/10
