Great album. Honestly 5/5. Every track is a banger.
Good on the surface. Nothing really wrong with it at all, excellent production, but it's not as accessible as I'd like it to be to keep in regular rotation. Favorite tracks: "Too High", "Golden Lady", "All In Love Is Fair", "Jesus Children of America"
The production is fun. Listening to David Byrne is kind of like listening to a super enthused Saturday morning cartoons character. It's good in small doses, but I don't think I'd want to sit through this album on a regular basis. A bit rough around the edges for a debut. Some bangers on here. It would be a better instrumental album.
This album is an experience back-to-front. You could just lose yourself in the vibes with the "poppier" tracks (like Backseat Freestyle or Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe) or really sit there and think about life and how Kendrick grew up, and the kind of neighborhoods and systems that birth these kinds of albums. It's still my favorite Kendrick project.
Favorite Tracks: "You Really Got Me", "Jamie's Cryin'", "Ain't Talkin' About Love", "I'm The One", "Little Dreamer", "Ice Cream Man"
Moody, atmospheric. Kind of like listening to a series of poems read to 80s synth, drum machines, and marimbas. You can put it on as background music, but that's a disservice to the lyricism and the flow of Cohen's voice. Pretty great.
There's a fluctatingly creepy feeling to almost every track on here besides "Common People" and "Mis-Shapes", not helped by the lyrics. (Especially on "Pencil Skirt.) But despite this, a certain desperation to the music kept me engaged throughout the album. For that, it was an enjoyable experience.
This album is just plain fun to listen to. Kinda like driving through the desert with hot wind blasting and a mirage ahead of you. I understand about 20% of Josh Homme's voice whenever I listen to a QOTSA song if I'm not reading the lyrics, but that doesn't even matter here. This definitely should be experienced as an entire record.
Favorite Tracks: "Highway to Hell", "Girls Got Rhythm", "Touch Too Much", "Love Hungry Man" I wish these ratings weren't out of 5 stars because it doesn't feel right to give this a 2 or 3. It's somewhere in the middle for me. It starts to lose steam at Shot Down In Flames for me, but picks back up at Love Hungry Man.
I really enjoy jazz, and Billie Holiday has a perfect voice for it, but this just doesn't do much for me. I'd have to be in a very specific mood (like Christmas Eve at 9 PM) to wanna put an album like this on. It's delicately and beautifully produced, but not for me. All the songs could be one long track.
This album isn't doing much for me. There's nothing offensively bad about it, but it's difficult to stay engaged even when musically intriguing moments happen. The vocals are mixed in a way that makes me feel like I'm struggling through a fog to get to the good shit. Never a good sign when listening to an artist inspires me to immediately go listen to someone else. Range Life is a great little track, though.
