Interesting album, includes "Hey hey my my", a classic song I already knew. I was not aware of the electric version of it, and was surprised of the powerful fuzz riff.
I liked "Powderfinger" and was surprised by the punky feel of "Sedan Delivery"
The rest of songs were pleasant to listen to.
Anyway, the album might have a lot of impact on its day, for me seems a bit undefined on and some songs are just fine
I really enjoyed it.
4+20 was my favorite
Good reggae record.
Some songs are great, others seem like written in the studio out of a jam.
"Stir it up" is super enjoyable.
The ones from Peter Tosh, I actually enjoyed them a lot, and got me into his career a little bit.
I wouldn't consider a must, even it is a great record.
Awesome sound quality and clarity.
Surprised to hear this quality from a record from 1959.
Her voice is perfect, it blends with the orchestra in a natural way, her timing is tranquil and gets perfectly with the instrumentation.
The tone is soft and pleasant.
She sounds like the ideal of what a singer should be.
The songs flow with so much cool rhythm.
5 stars.
Vol 4 is the 1st doom metal album.
If you like that genre, this is like the firing gun of the genre.
Doom Metal is a very low pitch sounding, riff oriented genre, dark lyrics, slow tempos and wailing solos.
Is not my favorite Sabbath album, and I don't know if I would consider it as one of the 1001 albums all time.
But the credit for starting a genre, must be given. Even maybe just one song, "Under the Sun" could be considered the one that defines the genre.
The production could honestly be a little better, Some guitars are out of tune "Snowblind" , "St Vitus Dance", Others "FX" and "Laguna Sunrise" are filler tracks.
It is an uneven record.
I consider myself a Sabbath lover (from 1st album to Heaven and Hell), but I wouldn't call this their best album.
On another hand, the album cover is iconic.
Classic, rock and roll.. with glasses.
Buddy Holly and the Crickets have influenced pretty much any band that came after them.
One of the 1st example of four guys playing their own songs.
Buddy looking super nerdy, and indie and alternative.. even starting punk rock with his energy and angst in songs like "Oh Boy".
This album with distortion and protest lyrics, could be The Clash.
The Beatles, got inspiration for a name, The Beach Boys for the harmonies, Weezer for their single and record cover, Elvis Costello for the nerdy look, and any other 4 member-group in one way or another.
A Fender and a Gibson on the cover, it's a declaration of principles which still in 2025 is the norm in rock.
Actually the Fender Stratocaster in the cover was 1st released just 3 years before this record.
All done before turning 22 years old. RIP Buddy !! gone too soon
I am a Bob Dylan admirer, I think he is a really superb songwriter and performer.
This is the 1st record I got from him, and I enjoyed it tremendously.
Some of these songs have become favorites of mine, "Girl of North Country", "Don't think twice..", "Masters of War".
It was also the first record that I heard where there was very little instrumentation, for almost all songs, only guitar, voice and harmonica.
So, for me this is the standard for which I measure other folk records.
I bought it for "Masters of War". A song that I heard on Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary concert. The lyrics of "Master of War" have been in my head almost from the very first listen, I always remember them, and still surprise me how somebody being so young, could be so capable of putting all those pointing and sensible thoughts together.
The cover also felt right to me; he and his girlfriend seemed very approachable.
After 60+ years I believe it still carries a lot of wisdom and thought triggering words.
Quite experimental and risky.
Considering the year it was released, this band Instead of going full punk rock, which would be the easy option, they orbit towards other fields and in a way, commit some sort of commercial suicide.
The record has interesting ideas, and they are definitely trying to explore new areas.
Curious record and, for me, inaccessible due to the randomness that exudes.
Some parts are In line with other acts of late 70's.
The band, seems to be uninterested in catching a broader audience, instead, they are investing their efforts in a sort of artistic pursue.
I can see somehow their influence on indie acts of the 80's.
Some songs (may not be actually songs), are just sonic landscapes, cinematic in some ways.
I don't imagine myself listening to them a lot.
Energetic, raw, streetwise and cool in several levels.
The Clash 1st album shows the combination of personalities that helped the Clash become an excellent band with their further releases until they exhausted their road.
The importance of four members each adding his personality and quality.
In the perspective of what the 70's were before the punk explosion, this album feels so fresh and spontaneous that I guess took many people by surprise.
This album is much more than punk rock.
Hear "Police and Thieves" or "Deny"
I imagine when this album came, everybody inevitably wanted more Clash.
Blues album of high quality, a lot of collaborations.
Santana, Los lobos, Bonnie Rait.. etc..
The album has the the type of production where everything sounds apparently perfect. Compared to early blues, it is such a contrast.
Huge respect for JLH on his 70 having the stamina and will to go for this album.
At last something from a non-English country ! (...Does music exist beyond USA/UK ?)
Ok record, it had a big impact in its time, late 90's in Europe, and I guess also in South America
;/ Not interesting for me, nothing on it feels original.
It has several cool songs. "Dreams", "Never going back again", "Don't stop.." , "Go your own way" ..
Very interesting album.
Each song tell a different story
From music perspective is a great record.
I enjoy several pieces of it, some of them i really found great.
Not for everybody (what is good for everybody after all?)
Great record written and recorded by one single guy who was known as a drummer.
You like him or not, this is quite an achievement.
Cool, Fun and pure 80's
Amazing guitar riffs, (Panama, Drop dead legs), air drums (Hot for Teacher), classic rock anthem (Jump)
Eddie is on it and he changed guitar forever.
An icon and a masterpiece of an album.
The whole is more than the parts, some songs are amazing ("Aladdin Sane", "Drive-in Saturday"), others very cool ("The Jean Genie", "Let's Spend the night together") others are great tracks with the 70's glam vibe.
The piano arrangements and solo on the title track is the ultimate piano performance ever.
The record cover art is unique and has been forever replicated and imitated continuously.
As a collection of songs, plus the aesthetics of the cover, plus avoiding formulas.
This record deserves acknowledge and a top rating.
I like Suede however I don't seem to enjoy all of their songs.
Some work perfectly for me.. others I don't get them ;!
The title track is a classic, great intro, dark lyrics and memorable solo.
The rest is at times OK or sometimes, for me uninteresting, not my thing , AOR or soft rock.. whatever..
The last songs I couldn't finish them
Classic Bruce Springsteen record.
Just for "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" it won my heart !
For me blues gets too repetitive, but I assume in 1960 it was the coolest thing around.
This album has very interesting moments
The riff and vibe of "Super Massive black hole" are top, I really enjoyed that song.
I love songs from Muse from other records, Plug in Baby or Victorious..
They are super-talented absolutely, but I have some issues with the voice, for some reason I don't relate to it.
Objectively I think it is a solid record and band.
Elvis had that charisma and presence.
his 1st album is much more surprising but this one feels good
It has Jeff Beck there, rocking and being amazing as lead guitar player.
It's 1966 and he is being literally a guitar virtuoso.
Great drum/bass and guitar sound in several songs, quite an interesting drum sound for a record of that era
Interesting record.
Magic, mysterious, innovative, original, to-the-point, clever and perfect.
8 superb tracks and no tittle needed
Some stuff in the album is quite innovative; the production, the concept, and some themes.
In some cases, the lyrics are very original for its time.
Otherwise, it feels closer to a musical than a rock album.
You don't know if they are for real or just playing a role, in my opinion, it feels like an impersonation.
It is a solid album
Great record and great songs.
That should be it !
Top musicianship, songwriting, style, epic themes, literature influences, clever lyrics, dynamics ! (Welcome Home, Master or Orion), pure energy (Disposable Heroes, Battery, Damage inc.. ), Riff of the riffs (Lepper Messiah), Progessive metal ? (The thing that should not be) .
They basically evolved music to a place no one expected, a Masterpiece !
Full Respect !
I didn't connect with it, nor the singer, lyrics, music,..
As others mentioned, this is redundant due to "Machine Head" and "In Rock" being also on this list, and many many other artists not even present once ;/
The songs here are live versions of songs present on those records, and I understand Deep Purple released it due to the demand of live performance records by their fans back in the 70's,
Is true that the versions here can at some point be even better than those on estudio (or viceversa).
In any case, either one or the other, could have been left out and the list, would be more diverse.
This one checks all the boxes in my list.
It's entertaining, calm, clever, bluesy and a great musical companion.
Very personal !
sound ok for a festival, I wouldn't consider it songs or songwriting.
These songs are just collection of samples, put together with a rythm to put people to dance.
I lost the track of the songs, song names, meanings, or special features of them.
These guys just picked a lot of forgotten records, took some samples, made the loops, and pretty much all, I don't even know this is worth mentioning
If they had stopped at this album, or even the next one. I would rated it higher,
Unfortunately, mentioning U2 now, feels like mentioning the McDonals of music, music for the masses, easy to sing along, easy to buy and consume.
The message got diluted in the flood of opinions about everyting, interviews, albums, songs, and presence everywhere
It has gotten so flooded with them that even their good material is tainted.
A few songs are cool, after a while, there is no dynamics, no contrast, i guess it's relevant in certain punk circles, but I don't know if this album transcends that.
BB King makes blues fun and interesting.
I agree, this is worth listening... Long time ago...
A template for rock albums to come.
A bit of rocking tracks, ballads, blues references, pop/rock songs, drum solo !, amazing bass line in "the lemon song". (the standard for what a bass line should be)
"What is and what should never be", superb !
"Moby Dick" superb !
"Ramble on", "Thank you", acoustic feely, but tight, and clear, great production... Influeces by Tolkien..
"Whole lotta love", a milestone in rock music.
"Heartbreaker" , "Bring it on home".. inspired the careers of so many guitarrists..
I always had great expectation on Public Enemy.
I feel attracted to their thing, their name, style, attitude, image.
However, their music always feels to me messy, too loaded, with no space to enjoy the parts, no space to focus on the rhymes or the instrumentation..
It seems that everything is always on top of everything else.
Moreover, the speaking parts, here and there..
Respect for them, but musically, ;/
btw, I love hip hop, I do, old school and new stuff, so they should be rated higher for me..
He has a cool voice, and the guitar has great tone ..
Oh, such an unexpected surprise !
Eclectic and so much quality.
"bird on a wire" and "The partisan" are gold.
the others songs didn't grow on me ..
Musically the album stylistically blends hard rock, funk and heavy metal musical styles.
An unique element, while discussing music, is Tom Morello's approach to soloing. It could be described, at times, as atonal or musique concréte, emulating special effects, such as sirens or alarms, increasing with it the feeling of urgency of the record.
The vocals are a blend of spoken word leaning styles, such as poetry reading, manifesto reading, proto-rap and the angst of hardcore and punk.
Lyrically, The album contains politically-charged content and criticism towards the establishment.
"I zimbra", is a loop and D Byrne shouting.
"Mind" is a loop and D Byrne singing on top. He sounds as if he really doesn't care.
"Paper" is something like "ticket to Ride", the intro.
Then bloody D Byrne comes all over.. with the same approach as befor ?
"Cities", another funky loop with Byrne annoying with his horrible voice.
"Life during wartime", guess what.. yes ! a loop with the same guy preaching about his stuff.
and so on..
I loved Talking Heads "77" and "More songs about buildings... ", even "little Creatures".. but this album is insufferable.
David Byrne was ok on those albums, on this ones, I can't really finish it.
The bass tone is good.
But overall, caca
I can't stand most of the songs..
When doves cry is cool ;)
Purple rain is a great track
This could have been an EP or a single !
