Not Pop in the standard sense, because most songs are all ballads. I have a hard time finding much different between any of the songs. Lead singer has limited range and doesn't do anything exciting. Easy to tune out. 2/10

Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
Mostly instrumental. Flows really smoothly between songs. A lot of great technical guitar work. Not particularly my taste, and probably won't listen again. I can appreciate the talent and layering of sound.
Portishead
3/5
A lot of cool beats and seems like the predecessor to lofi. Not a huge fan of the lead singer's voice though. A few of the songs were catchy, but the album seems a bit repetitive. 6/10
Billy Joel
4/5
Several iconic songs. Great, consistent sound. Some upbeat stuff mixed with more serious lyrics. 8/10
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
Janis Joplin's voice is very dominant in every song. The album flows pretty well together. None of the songs really stood out to me all that much. I wasn't focusing on the lyrics much for this first listen. 6/10
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
So many great songs that I've heard everywhere. Well produced and really cohesive. Great sound. Timeless album. 8/10
Sade
3/5
Fairly repetitive and none of the songs really stood out. Nice voice and calm beats. Didn’t realize this was R&Bs origins. 5/10
Air
3/5
First song was deceptive, rest of album was interesting and unique. Explored a lot of sounds and genres. No idea what the movie is about based on the music. 7/10
Bee Gees
1/5
Didn't even want to keep listening after three songs. Nothing really of substance. All blends together. Very much an artifact of its time. 3/10
Depeche Mode
3/5
Some refreshing stuff in this album. Never heard of the band before, but like their style and sound. Liked several songs for different reasons. 7/10
The Velvet Underground
1/5
A garbled mess. Sounds like inexperience to me. Lack of consistent rhythm, several songs dragged on far too long with super repetitive verses. Very boring and repetitive. Not enjoyable. 3/10.
DJ Shadow
1/5
Pretty dry and boring. Each song resuses a lot of the same beats, sounds, loops, etc. Maybe in its time it was experimental and risky, but in the present day it's very safe and overdone. 3/10
Pantera
3/5
Really like the seamless transitions between songs. Not a fan of the lead singer's voice. It's very stereotypical metal, nearly screamo. Some great guitar work and decent lyrics. 6/10
Pink Floyd
4/5
Popular for a reason. New and inventive. Cool sound. Pretty timeless. Liked it more than I was expecting to. Didn't like it much in college when I listened to it for a course. 7/10
Nas
3/5
Nice beats, smooth raps, good instruments. Embodies the identity of 90s rap music. Easy to bop with. A few of the songs were a little repetitive with both the lyrics and beat with no variation. 6/10
Fairport Convention

Neu!
3/5
Album is sorta split in half by instrumental and electronic sounds only, and some with rock/ metal vocals. I only cared for the first kind since they were kinda relaxing. This has a very contemporary sound given that it's fifty years old. 5/10
Scritti Politti
3/5
Uses a lot of similar sound effects and riffs popular in Michael Jackson's music. The lead singer has a similar sound too. Pretty upbeat and easy to listen to, but nothing super special or memorable. 6/10
Stan Getz
4/5
The only kind of jazz I like. Really easy to listen to, smooth, nothing jumpy. A few iconic songs in this album too. 8/10
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Different genre than I normally listen to but easy to enjoy. Not a huge fan of an album having four super long songs but I see what he's doing. I think the story tying into a song for the last one was cool but 19 minutes is too long. 6/10
Eric Clapton
3/5
Great sound and some fun guitar work. Smooth, clean sound with a little experimentation between songs. Didn't know the Lorax's "Let It Grow" song originated from this. 7/10
Hot Chip
3/5
Very unique sound, and a lot of cool electronic/ synth sounds I haven't really heard before. Sounds like an older album than it is. 5/10
The Undertones
2/5
Pretty vanilla sounding. Not much that's special, and kinda forgettable. Guitar and vocals are a little too even sounding volume wise which isn't a good thing. 4/10
Louis Prima
3/5
I've heard many songs in movies by Louis Prima, but never looked him up. I'm in the mood for this genre every once in a while, and I'm glad I have a name for it now. His voice is really timeless and there's a lot of freedom with the instruments. 6/10
Dire Straits
3/5
Liked the slower vibes and the vocals. Recognized two of the songs and added them to the playlist. Would've like more vocals and/ or shorter songs. Wasn't a fan of the slur in Money for Nothing. 5/10
Spacemen 3
1/5
Hard to listen to, I'd rather listen to silence. Overdid the alternating two notes a few songs in the album but they kept going with it. The longer songs are the repetition of a few-second-long segment a hundred times over. Waste of time. 2/10
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
3/5
Great, chill vibes from the instruments. Didn't look up the lyrics so they might say otherwise, but pretty relaxing. Liked the length and structuring of the songs, even the longer ones. 7/10
Barry Adamson
2/5
It took me most of the album to realize that it was a mock soundtrack album. I liked a few but a lot of them felt misguided or really experimental without much payoff. I can see where the artist was trying to go but I don't think he got there.
Queen
3/5
The songs I loved outweighed the ones I didn't care for. I've listened to Queen before and this album definitely is their outbreak album. I liked a lot the guitar solos and Freddie is iconic as ever. 6/10
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
1/5
Lead singer has a really limited vocal range. Paired with the pretty repetitive instrument usage, I found the songs to be pretty bland, uninteresting, and uninspiring. Wasn't sure how I felt about the ties into scripture, but they were very prevalent. 3/10
The Electric Prunes
2/5
I liked the variety of genres and sound explored in some of the songs. It wasn't nearly as repetitive as a lot of other music from this era and genre. The vocals sounded a little distant from the mic in most of the songs, but I guess that's a production issue. 5/10
3/5
Some solid beats and meaningful lyrics in these super long songs. I liked the overall feel of the album, even if some of the songs and topics blurred across a few songs. 6/10
The Hives
3/5
It's a very quickly paced album. The songs have a fast bpm but I liked what was happening. The lyrics were lost on me this first time around. 6/10
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Some incredible and fast, intricate trumpet riffs. Like the slower pace later on in the album. Some of the songs get a bit long and quite repetitive though. 6/10
Frank Sinatra
3/5
I've heard several of these songs before, and obviously Frank Sinatra's voice is smooth and iconic. However, as a critic, he has a pretty limited range, and only one sound. In the time period, that was fine, but looking back, it all sounds the same and runs together. 5/10
Dr. John
1/5
I genuinely have no idea what's going on. I wasn't really into any of the songs in this album. Most of the songs without many lyrics were really boring and repetitive or just uncomfortable and unfamiliar. The ones with lyrics were bizarre. Never really sure what was going on. 2/10
Fishbone
3/5
Quite playful and energetic. I like the sound and rhythms. There's a lot of freedom and experimentation which works for the most part. 7/10
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
Some nice beats and interesting dialogue with sound effects in the background. Wasn't entirely sure of the messaging in the lyrics, but it seemed positive. I liked the break in the album flow with the interludes. 7/10
Johnny Cash
3/5
Recognized a couple of the songs but most were new to me. The theme of outlaw country was prevalent. Johnny Cash has an iconic voice and he never pushes his limits. A lot of quick little stories. I thought the live version of a prison concert was very unconventional but it was enjoyable. 6/10
The White Stripes
3/5
Interesting but a little strange. I like a few of the songs that were familiar or had a known structure, but one of them towards the end was basically just a conversation and that threw me off. I liked the vibe and sound overall, but probably won't listen again. 5/10
The Youngbloods
3/5
Has some similarities to the Beatles which works given the time period. I preferred the instrumental songs over the singing ones. There's some good tracks though that I enjoyed more than I expected to. 7/10
Beck
3/5
I want to rate this higher but it was just so long and dragged out a lot. Each song could've been reduced and lost nothing. I think the snail pace of each song made it seem longer than it was. I liked the simplicity though of the guitar and vocals. His voice sounds a little like Bono which I think is a good thing. There was some clear messages in the songs which were meaningful. 6/10
Talking Heads
2/5
There's really no rules to be followed with the lyrics so it comes across as chaotic and redundant. I'm not very impressed with the sing/talk approach for most of the songs and the singer's pitch is poor. The instruments are more developed, but are also quite repetitive. 4/10
The War On Drugs
4/5
Felt really fresh and exciting. I never knew where a song was going. Preferred the instrumental songs more but really enjoyed the whole album as an experience I'll be revisiting. 8/10
Elton John
2/5
Too much of the same thing. Don’t care for many of the songs. I just don’t think he’s my cup of tea. 4/10
Living Colour
3/5
Good rhythms and beats throughout. Like the instruments and the vocals. Overall a good time. Some thought-provoking lyrics at times. 6/10
The Cars
3/5
There were some fun bops in this one. I recognized a few of the songs, and the ones I didn't know felt compatible with the others. It's a fairly cohesive and upbeat album that was enjoyable enough. 6/10
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Really slow, nice, easy listening. Don't have to think too much, just enjoy the lyrics and beats. Nice vocals too, as expected. 7/10
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Sounds a lot like the Beatles which makes perfect sense. You know what you're going to get going in, which can be a good thing. Nothing crazy here, but pretty enjoyable and relaxing. 6/10
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
1/5
Not for me at all. Super repetitive lyrics that drove me crazy, every song sounds the same, and lead vocalist voice is flat most of the time. Nothing interesting here or worth listening to. 3/10
Bee Gees
3/5
Better than the last album I listened to by them, but still not great. Sounds like most of the other music from this time period. A couple catchy lyrics here and there, but I won't revisit. 5/10
David Bowie
3/5
Entertaining and different than I expected. I've never listened to David Bowie before, so this was a good first impression. I liked a few songs. and appreciated the creativity and experiments that other albums in this time period never had. 7/10
