if i could give it 3.5 i would. not a bad album at all just not very enticing either. none of the songs make me think omg i have to listen to that over and over again. good guitar.
really good very heavy but still fun. loved how so many songs started with one two three, made me giggle
The songs that are done right are so, so right. Love that they aren’t too long. Not sure if this is an actual album though was hard to find the right songs.
More like a 4.5. A very simple album in a sense, minimalism done right. I like songs that are short but only great songs (like these) can do it. Almost a no-skip album.
it’s not that the album is bad it’s just that it’s horrifically boring. killed me to finish it. background instrumentals were often nice but that was about all. biggest issue is the album sounds like it came out the 80s even though it’s a 90s album. nothing wrong with that but i personally hate 80s music. the guy’s vocals are slightly irritating but not as bad as other reviewers made it seem. perhaps i don’t love the low production value either but the debut strokes album is also quite raw and is my favorite album. also unrelated but what the hell is that album cover. so ugly. i’d rate 2.5 if i could but between a 2 and a 3 it’s more deserving of a 3 because clearly thought and effort went into it.
there is lots to like here so if someone was to ask me if they should give the album a listen i’d say yes. the issue is i just don’t like whatever genre this is. i love a lot of old music but this has an underlying pop? or something i’m not sure what vibe that im not personally into. sounds are well made though. definetly worth a listen to see if it’s for you. her voice is very smooth but not particularly exciting. i also don’t like R&B music (but love jazz) and this album has such a vibe. me personally i would not listen to any of these songs again and the album is more of a 2.5. i will say i am shocked this is one of apple music’s 100 best albums. it truly doesn’t seem that great to me but to each their own. where you lead is probably the best song but as a gilmore girls fan so im horribly biased. what i will say is this album has a serious cozy vibe and that is where i could see it gathering fans.
i constantly find myself wishing we could give half stars during this process. this is really a 4.5 album but i can’t give it a 5 because it isn’t one of my favorites of all time, and that’s what i’m saving the 5s for. amazing album though. i, a 24 year old girl born in the 2000s, am clearly not the target market. and yet it speaks to me. some stuff survives the tests of time. also upon reflection some earlier albums should have been given a 2 but it’s too late to change that now… i think my favorite song off this album is downbound train. other favorites include my hometown and cover me even though it’s probably the simplest of the songs. great mix of music that you could dance and cry to. would sound better if i had a cold beer.
once again we have a problem because truly this is a 3.5 album. the issue really is how i gave other earlier reviews a 3 that they were not in fact deserving of. i have to now speak my truth and admit both the fall and the manic street preachers deserved a 2. i’m sorry to say it but that’s how i feel. this album is the one that deserves a 3 (really a 3.5). particularly enjoyed chinese radiation and am on my third listen of that. how can i give an album a mere three if i am currently replying one song for the third time? easy. that song just happens to be the best. the rest are good but not in a life shattering way. the instrumental in this is beyond though. that twang of the mmmmmmmh … mmmmmmmh. you’ll know it when you hear it. non alignment pact is also good but nowhere near close to chinese radiation. what the hell the lyrics mean i don’t know, don’t ask me.
I can’t keep repeating this but really this is a 3.5. i mean some real classics here. i just am not particularly blown away by it but the talent is there for sure. he has a dylan-like voice. like his actual singing voice. man i feel so bad giving this a three because it’s closer to a four but not quiiiiite there for me personally. a lot of it is very beatles esque but the instruments are not as strong. i think if there was stronger instrument use id jump this to a four. damn me for not putting my email and therefore not having the ability to edit past reviews. thrown off this whole system. whatever. favorite song off the album is very predictable, sunshine superman.
i’m so shocked to be giving a live album a four. some other reviewer wrote that listening to a live album feels like when your friend makes you watch videos they took at a gig. that characterization is so accurate i won’t attempt to word it any other way. this album does not have that feeling. first of all how is the sound quality so good? perhaps because i have the ears of a novice but i wouldn’t have known this is a live album were it not for the cheers and whooping at the end of songs. who knew recordings were so quality in the 70s. second of all these people can JAM. it almost sounds like they didn’t rehearse these songs or figure them out beforehand, they just went on stage and started grooving. not that it sounds like they didn’t practice. it just sounds like these aren’t recorded songs at all but freestyles instead. that is a compliment. of the highest degree actually. to give a live album a four after it made you listen to a 23 minute song .. this ladies and gents is the real deal.
truly not this album’s fault that it is received such a low rating by me. if you were to ask me what my least favorite music is i’d tell you “r&b, disco, and anything from the 80s.” thus sadly this album was destined to fail in my rankings. obviously it is critically acclaimed and well loved so i’m sure they’ll survive this criticism. like i said it isn’t that the album is bad; i just don’t like the genre at aaaaall. obviously nile rodgers is a genius and i love his work with daft punk. boosted this from a one to a two out of respect for his influence and the fact that the instruments are so brilliantly played. for that reason, savoir faire was also my favorite song off the album. goddamn 80s.
Once again I need to reiterate that earlier 3s were not true 3s and should not have been given 3s. This is a 3.5. I cannot give it a four because Blond is the four album. This is a good album but it is no Blond. Couple of things I really like - (1) layered music (like you can hear him saying multiple lines at once sometimes or he responds to himself in a different tone, you know the thing) (2) the addition of non-main songs on the album. This is really a modern thing I don’t know of any old albums that do it. Which makes sense because in the vinyl era it would be a pain in the ass to have to sit through these 40 second blips. But I LOVE albums that have random little things thrown in like instrumentals or in Frank Ocean’s case spoken dialogue. It makes the album feel less like a thing to sell and more like an artistic collection. Coldplay does a really good job at this in Viva La Vida but that isn’t the album I’m reviewing right now. Favorite song is Pyramids.
This album really didn’t do it for me like I expected from from a Bowie album. It was clearly well produced and thought out just didn’t appeal to me. Even if i had the option to give it 3.5 i’d still give it a 3. The last few songs were almost spooky which may very well be your vibe! i read that bowie wrote this as he walked across war torn berlin and i think that definitely comes through in the album which is a testament to his skills as an artist. so anyways this is a good album just not an album for me. i did save one song: sound and vision. for what it’s worth idk what about this album didn’t speak to me because i like weird music and even spooky music sometimes. idk.
another pure 3 not a 3.5. not bad by any means once again just not calling to me in the way i wanna be called to. i didn’t end up downloading anything and i just can’t in my heart give something more than three stars when i didn’t get a single download out of it. i don’t even really have much to say about this it was fine not much more.
the lyrics here are very strong. this is very much a story telling album and that is very well executed. i agree with someone else who said the beats are aged. some rap songs you think i hope i can find the instrumental of this. this album is nothing without ice rapping. i like the dialogue added in it definitely adds to the successful story telling. one thing ill say is that the songs kind of blend together. they all kind of sound the same which helps the album maintain a theme but it is slightly tedious to listen to. the aggressiveness works, it’s like his “brand.” downloaded one song.
i feel kind of unfair giving this a two because he has better underlying beats than Ice Cube and perhaps better lyricism and i gave that album a three. i’m only comparing the two because they were assigned to me two days in a row. i just can’t give this more than a two because it was so difficult and tedious to finish. i also don’t think he’s as good a rapper as Ice even if the rap lyrics themselves are better. wouldnt listen again and didn’t download anything. but he seems like a cool guy.
wow first five yet, very exciting. but how could you give anything less than a five for an album where you downloaded nine out of the twelve songs? so little to dislike about this album even the three i didn’t download are completely fine. britpop does it again (or did it then i guess?) hardest part is choosing a favorite song but i think it’s probably don’t look back in anger. shoutout to these brothers who have an ego for sure but i guess for a reason.
some reviews called this album boring. sure, in the way that the perfect bowl of scrambled eggs is “boring.” but it’s still perfect and hard as hell to do! i have to stop reading these reviews honestly because these people have abysmal taste. what i will say is this album is clearly not sinatra’s absolute best. that’s why it’s getting a four and not a five. i didn’t even download too much just two or three songs. but how could you not like this? it’s just perfect. it’s one of those sounds you could have playing all day in the background. it isn’t exactly main idea, hey guys come to listen to this. but it is beautiful and really uplifted my day.
i wanted to like this so much more than i actually did. like i really wanted to like it the vibes were almost perfect. the issue is i love the beat and i really don’t like his singing on top of it. not that his singing is bad it’s just the underlying beats are exactly what im looking for in a song and his singing isn’t. i really tried so hard. i will say the album cover is amazing. it made me even sadder that i didn’t end up downloading any of the songs. one of my favorite album covers just so effortlessly attractive.
Another three, not good and not bad. I find her voice to be a touch annoying, I find the music to be a touch too hippie-indie, and yet I recognize it's good work overall. But as explained at earlier times I downloaded no songs and how could an album ever be given anything more than a three if not a single download came of it. A two seems too (lol) low though because I could listen again, I wouldn't be put off by it. A three is a good, solid number.
Okay I was prepared to give this album a 3.5 I really was. Good album, hell great album, but I wasn't suuuuper crazy into it. Then ... Exhaustion. Oh my god. What a song!!!! Yes, the song on its own is good enough that it has bumped up this entire album to a four. A one-download album is now getting a four. I know, I know, "oh the horror," but in my defense Exhaustion is the single best song I have discovered through this process. How could that not land it a four? Exhaustion is so good that I think I'll relisten to the entire album because the team behind that song (though rumor is Dave Grohl did it all) could not produce anything less than a four album, my ears must have been mistaken. Bye, going to listen to Exhaustion now.
i have to stop giving things i went through painfully a two or three. this is a one. it just isn’t good. it probably actually is a 1.5 but that isn’t an option so instead it’s the first one (it shouldn’t be other stuff has been just as bad). i think some of the underlying beats are quite strong. the lyrics are bad. i don’t understand them and they seem to be a joke idk. there’s just also a somewhat annoying vibe to the songs just like pulling teeth to get through this. anyways i feel bad im sure these are lovely people with lots of fans. but what business it has on a best albums of all time list i have nooo idea. this part goes without saying, but obviously i did not download anything.
i would really like to speak with whoever came up with this list. what is your criteria. what astounded you about this so badly that you had to include it. it’s not like it sucks but it isn’t so good either. i know 1001 albums is a lot but i promise you this didn’t need to be on the list. two at most and that is because im feeling generous! no downloads obvi.
this is perhaps the least offensive album of all time. i just can’t imagine anyone asking you to turn this album off or getting mad that it’s on. but it also isn’t super exciting either. this is like the peak of background music, it almost completely fades away. i didn’t even realize the album ended for 20 minutes. did download two songs.
Very Yellow Submarine like album and I don't just mean because it sounds like the Beatles---although it does sound very much like something the Beatles would write and sing. It has a similar sort of humor and childlikeness to it. Not a very serious album. Downloaded two (I think) songs but mind you the album is 20+ so that isn't amazing numbers. The best song is the one I already had downloaded: Waterloo Sunset (I didn't count it towards the two mentioned earlier, those are separate). What does that signify? That this is a 3.5 stars album (damn you for not letting me do halfsies) and that I have amazing taste (I can find the best song off an album even before listening to the whole album, isn't that remarkable!)
i mean yeah obviously, it’s bob dylan. not quite a five but still very very good. once again my favorite song was the one i already knew and now im wondering if my taste is good or if it’s just my brain responding to the fact that it recognizes the tune and is therefore producing happiness. let’s just say i have good taste. this album is so spoken word but i guess that’s dylan in general. some of the lyrics were very humorous and yeah i agree how can she live with her crazy family? oh my fav song was it’s alright ma im only bleeding. then i downloaded three other songs. not too bad four songs out of eleven, not too bad at all.
once again we are at a place where i want to like it so bad, so bad, and yet …. (i’m looking at you donald fagen). the album cover and name are immaculate (im still looking at you donald fagen). hell, the underlying music is great (yes, still fagen). but the singing … dear god the singing. unlike fagen (yes i’ve finally looked away) where i felt like the singing was simply not making the music any better here the singing could be good. i can’t tell because his voice is awful. not his skill as a singer he’s clearly skilled. but that 80s tone dear GOD what is that he sounds like he’s trying to flirt with a metrosexual and a 1920s flapper. i hate it. music is objectively good. downloaded one song.
