I love Led Zeppelin. The problem is that most people do. While listening to this album, I am unable to immerse myself into the themes of the songs, because all I can imagine is sitting at a bar with my friends on a Friday evening, with no worries in my head and a cocktail in my hands while Led Zeppelin is blasting through their speakers. Their songs are ingrained in our culture and lives, we all know them, we've all heard it and we all love them. It just goes to show how timeless their music is, when half of a century later, we still listen to it. And it's such a thin line between being overplayed and timeless. Nickleback is one of the most hated bands, despite making genuinely good music, yet most people hate them because they are overplayed. However we just can't get tired of Led Zeppelin and continue to play their music everywhere.
This album is great. Even a white fella like me can be transported to a world of senseless violence, drugs and sex while listening to this album. I was so close to saying "Fuck this shit", quitting my job and going on to pimp on the streets. But then the album ended and I was back in my mundane boring self. The song lyrics themselves are kind of cheesy by today's standard, but the great rhythm and flow of it all still has me hooked!
I've found myself vibing with this album and being completely taken over by the music of it, only to stop and listen to the lyrics and be hit with a wave of sadness in those words. And other times I would forget about the music and be overwhelmed by a colorful picture Stevie Wonder is painting with his words instead. And in the end, I'd forget both and just become incredibly horny for him instead. I loved it.
I've not listened much to David Bowie before going into this, but of course I've heard his classics such as Space Oddity, so I went in expecting something similar, a poetry meets music kind of experience. However I was quite disappointed to find out that not only is it not poetry, there's barely any lyrics, I swear, he says like 2 full sentences through the entire album. And when your music is slow and monotonic, that's kind of a death sentence. I can see why people like it and I don't think its bad music, not by a long shot, but I expected more and it was really hard for me to not fall asleep while listening to it.
As rock goes, I would say it was pretty mediocre. It's good music, but I don't think it brings anything new to the table. Except It's the end of the world, which had me playing that song on loop for a good while.
A little bit too pretentious for me at times and overall kind of boring. But every kind of music has it's own time and place. This album's place and time is when I'm in retirement home however.
Chill rock beats to study to!
I was scared going into this album, because of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved this album, it had this dark psychedelic sound, something in between punk and goth music, and it resonated with me, I didn't feel bored by it, even a song that was just basically a 12 minute guitar riff didn't bore me. This is the kind of music you would hear late at night during a music festival, as you stumble around half drunk and half high and it evokes a certain kind of feeling of emptiness, despite the crowds around you.
