Yeezus is the sixth studio album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It was released on June 18, 2013, through Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records. West gathered a number of artists and close collaborators for the production, including Mike Dean, Daft Punk, Noah Goldstein, Arca, Hudson Mohawke, and Travis Scott. The album also features guest vocals from Justin Vernon, Chief Keef, Kid Cudi, Assassin, King L, Charlie Wilson, and Frank Ocean. Fifteen days before its release date, West enlisted the help of producer Rick Rubin to strip down the sound of Yeezus in favor of a more minimalist approach. The album has been characterized as West's most experimental and sonically abrasive work. It draws from an array of genres, including industrial, acid house, electro, punk, and Chicago drill. West's unconventional use of samples is also contained, as on "Blood on the Leaves", which contains a sample from Nina Simone's 1965 rendition of "Strange Fruit". No album artwork is featured on the release of the former, and the physical CD edition was released in a clear jewel box with only a strip of red tape and sample credits. Initial promotion included worldwide video projections of the music and live television performances. West released two singles from the album; "Black Skinhead" in July 2013 and "Bound 2" the following month. The release of Yeezus coincided with that of rapper J. Cole's album Born Sinner, which was moved back a week to coincide with Yeezus' release, leading to speculation about which release would sell more copies. Yeezus received widespread acclaim from critics, many of whom named it among West's best work and commended its brash direction, though public response was divided. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 327,000 copies in the first week of release, while also topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Russia and the United Kingdom. It has since been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was named by several publications as one of the best albums of the 2010s, including Rolling Stone, who later included it at 269 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
WikipediaThat was like a checklist for all the things I hate in music. Mainly the massive ego and all the talk about pussy and what he's gonna do to women. Shit music and about as catchy as a Sunderland beach ball. Didn't think there was a stand out track so it's not even a filler album. Just utter rubbish. I feel harsh on college dropout now because this is shitter and I gave that a 1.
Cannot stand this clown. Total and utter knob who cannot handle fame or fortune very well. Bit shit at rapping too. He’s not exactly vanilla Ice
I loved this so much more than I thought I would. Shit, man Kanyes reputation is both very deserved in regards to numbers, but he does get more hate than he deserves, this album is so creative, and still just a great listen. The autotuned bits reminds me of Travis Scott and makes me wanna barf, but it's not too bad. My most unexpected 5
Loved how Kanye flipped the sound from twisted completely and went with an almost industrial, digital feel for this album. It’s the hip hop version of what Nirvana did between Nevermind and In Utero. At points the beats are extremely minimal and also jarring - he has no fear in just switching it up mid track and throwing out jump cuts left right and centre. Daft Punk produced the first three tracks and what a difference to the DP sound on RAM that year. Lyrically this album is self aware but also you can see where “this” Kanye is heading. It’s cold and challenging in many parts too and you have to respect the sheer balls this guy has. “As soon as they like you, make em unlike you”
As Ye's most controversial album of all time, I think that it’s pretty cool. The first thing that I want to talk about is the production since it's such a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I do like the weird production on tracks like "New Slaves" and "On Sight". However, I hate th fact that on some tracks he just put these samples that are just so pointless. It was cool seeing Travis Scott working with Ye, I'll give the album that. This cover is up there with Ye's best ones. It looks like one of those kind of covers that people upload when the official album isn't even on streaming services. It's sad that this album didn't get an official vinyl release since it would be cool to see if they'd change the cover for it, but you should sadly just dream. I've heard some people complain about the lyrics on this track, mostly on "Black Skinhead" and "I'm In It", but I don't really see the problems with them. Sure, it’s annoying hearing him whine about not being accepted in the clothing industry and the Asian pussy line can give you a sour taste after (I'm so fucking funny), but I don't really think that Ye was trying to make the most lyrical album that he has ever made. Also, this definitely does not feel like an album. I'm not saying that 10 tracks is bad, since that is how many tracks I think an album should have. The thing is that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had this huge feeling about it, it literally felt like the album was made over an entire decade. So it feels like this was a mixtape just to have people not wait fucking 6 years for The Life Of Pablo, but I'm not complaining. Favourite track would have to be "Blood On The Leaves". The production is amazing, with the huge horns just blazing through the track. Ye just sounds hungry as a motherfucker, especially on the second verse. Least favourite track would have to be "Bound 2". It's not that it's sonically bad, I just don't think that the track fits the album. The entire album has very obnoxious production which can be good or bad, and this feels like a scrap over from an old Ye album. So, I really think that this album is the most underrated by Ye. 9/10
The only good thing I can say about this album is that I found the sampling of Bound 2 to be groovy. Everything else was really bad. Like, the 'I feel gross and should shower now' kinda bad. I regret listening to this.
Great production values for an artist who is a extreme narcissist and who lacks talent. This album is boring.
I'm not listening to this narcissistic waste human flesh, no matter how "influential" his music is. Kanye West in an influencer to the decline of civilized society and nothing more.
What's the appeal? The music is abrasive and just terrible, the rapping is... mediocre at best when it's not shitty. The lyrics??? Holy hell.... unimaginative, utterly stupid and sophomoric and distasteful. I mean, other than that I loved it. WTactualF Again: what is the appeal? Anywhere. This should have been a perfect album for me since I'd never heard Kayne before, I was legitimately excited. For exactly one minute. Now I know. I never need to hear this again. Ever. E.V.E.R. One of the most painful and disgraceful albums I've ever listened to front to back if not *the* worst. 0/10 not worthy of anything close to a star.
Say what you will about the man, Kanye produces great art. Interesting and captivating throughout. A great album to workout or to motivationally pump up to. One of the best albums I've listened to from this site.
So incredibly ahead of its time it's insane. I understand why people dislike this album, and there are certainly low points for me: I do not like I'm In It, regardless of the fact that all the reasons I dislike it are why it was made in the first place, and c'mon, "I keep it 300, like the Romans" ??, but there aren't many albums that give the listener the experience that Yeezus does. The beats and samples are iconic (love me some Waluigi Pinball-type beat on Guilt Trip), and production is of course fantastic. Does listening to this narcissistic trip in 2022 make me more uncomfortable than I would've been listening in 2013, given recent happenings with Kanye? Maybe. Does it change how I feel about this album? 5. Already Saved: Black Skinhead; Blood On The Leaves; Guilt Trip; Bound 2 Saved After Listening: New Slaves, Hold My Liquor*
After the maximalism of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West released the minimalist Yeezus. The album opens with a jarring synth which sets the stage for the aggressive confrontational lyrics. This may not be my favorite Kanye album, but it’s definitely the last great album he released
I couldn't listen properly listen to most of the songs. I just don't see the appeal. The only ones I could listen to were Blood On The Leaves and Bound 2, with the latter being the only one I really enjoyed. 1/5 stars.
That was garbage. The music itself was mediocre, the rhymes and techniques were only occasionally engaging (I mean seriously, ending multiple back-to-back verses with the same word is like kindergarten-level prose) and the content of the lyrics was completely pointless. I honestly thought the album was meant to be self-satirizing, like some sort of commentary on how ludacris celebrity life has become, but alas I was just grasping for ways to give the album more credit than it really merits.
this was actually terrible. i like some of kanye’s music, but this album literally had no redeeming qualities. it was literally just sending the same boring message but in somewhat different forms? it was just bad and literally anyone could do this, not impressive in any way.
Holy Holy, what a pretentious fuckwit. I don't care what colour your dick is, stop trying to degrade women with it, regardless of their colour. Flying crucifixes, how did this uninventive hack get such airplay and somehow convince people to buy his crappy shoes. Some good bass lines - but Jesus weeping - what kind of world do we live in when this misogynistic, self-worshiping tool gets critical acclaim and a bankroll. By Zeus's beard this made me angry. Really, really, sad angry.
As much as I love hip-hop, this album doesn't deserve anything above 1. Utter garbage. Destroyed my hip-hop rating... Terrible.
Zero tolerance for Nazis. I don’t care if it’s only .11 cents per song, my money’s not going to support a self-proclaimed Nazi. Instead, I streamed Yo La Tengo’s “I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass” and “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One” (As an aside, how is this record not on the list???? One of the greatest indie-rock albums of all time) I encourage you to do the same when a Kanye record gets generated for you: Find an album you love from a Jewish artist and stream that instead.
This is a hard hitting album. It is super industrial, alternative, and even punk rap. This was different for Kanye. Every album he has made has a new feel. This one is a big example. The songs on this album that stand out are on sight, black skinhead, new slaves, blood on the leaves, and bound 2. One of his best to date.
I wasn't ready for how much I'd like this, so creative. Favorite track is Black Skinhead
It's a brilliant album Sure Kanye is a fucking nut case and the blatant misogyny is all over this album but I have to give him his due it a masterclass in breaking Hip-hop norm
I mean I listened to this on repeat in college, one of my ALL time faves and great to revisit
On Sight - 10/10 Black Skinhead - 9/10 I Am A God - 9/10 New Slaves - 10/10 Hold My Liquor - 10/10 I'm In It - 8/10 Blood On The Leaves - 10/10 Guilt Trip - 8/10 Send It Up - 7/10 Bound 2 - 10/10 Final - 9/10
2nd favourite Kanye album. After the luxury of Twisted Dark Fantasy, the decision to strip back the beats and make it more industrial was a great move and really moved things forward. The album drips with energy. It moves me. The level of arrogancy is great. God features on a track. French bakers wrote a letter because of this album. The pacing and shifts in energy of "Blood on the Leaves" is perfection.
Scientists are still working on determining the precise point Yeezy went from a genius disguised as an idiot to an idiot disguised as a genius, but Yeezus could very well be Kanye West at his most audacious—well, at least when it comes to his music and not being a general shithead. Between the aggressive electronic "oh shit, Death Grips is pretty good" sound and the conviction with which he delivers his rhymes (going all in whether it's frustration over bigotry or borderline moronic wordplay), it's hard not to be a captive audience to this record. He goes out swinging on more than one occasion (I'm In It is basically all of the album's lesser qualities congealed into a single track), but the rest is a reminder of how someone like Kanye could end up in his fucked-up position in the first place. Key Tracks: Hold My Liquor, Blood on the Leaves, Send It Up
I love how abrasive and aggressive it is, it almost sounds retro futuristic from an alternate universe. But man, bound 2 is just so bad that it spoils my enjoyment from the end of the album. Oh well.
It was a brave move to do a dark, industrial, electro album when all his previous albums sold so well. This was the first KW music I was exposed to, when it made the critic's lists upon release. I listened to Black Skinhead many times as I remember.
I don't know Kanye West or Ye, or whatever his name is now, personally, but I've always thought he was a complete bell-end. But I put that aside in order to listen to this album. I actually really enjoyed the first 4 tracks I thought they were really interesting musically. And then it started to get a bit annoying. I still think he's a bell-end.
How come this is a must listen...it's already 21 century open ears wide people
I really liked Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the other Kanye West album we had so far.-This one I absolutely hate. Probably Kanye would say something like the unenlightened not understanding the genius vision. Be that as it may, the vision sounds horrendous. I'm hating both the bad rap as well as the minimalist techno - both styles I'm not generally a fan of to begin with - and couldn't finish a single song.
I don’t know what to say except that he deserves to be in prison ! I didn’t listen to all the lyrics but some were disgraceful and I can’t understand why any women would contribute to his earnings by buying his “music” if you can call it that. I gave up !!
Jesus Christ, this man is an arse. I really don't get why this album is held in such esteem. People calling it ahead of it's time? In what sense? Created essentially by Daft Punk, sampling (nothing wrong with sampling) earlier music and then he just puts some juvenile, misogynist words over the top. Plenty of people already doing that. The lyrics aren't anything special and frequently neither complement nor disturb or disrupt the music, which makes me wonder what they are for. It never ceases to amaze me how people get taken in by the self-promotion of such mediocrity. There really ought to be an option for zero stars.
This is what happens when you feed the Mogwai after midnight: a shitty artist creates shitty overindulgent narcissistic album.
Lyrics are garbage. I really wanted to give Kanye a fair go, but he just doesn't deserve the air-time.
the only good thing that ever came out of Kanye's mouth was "George Bush hates black people."
For as much as Kanye gets hyped up as this genius producer, this really doesn't sound great. The lyrics are largely awful too.
Oh ffs NO! How is he considered a genius?!?!? This is awful. And waaaay too much pussy talk 🤢
This is my 25th album and it's the second by this overrated tabloid fodder. Apparently his music changed with every album. Pity the lyrical content is still just as tawdry. He's either bragging or whining. I didn't have to listen to this. Nobody does.
This is a lot worse than I thought it would be. Aggressively autotuned. Incredibly repetitive lyrics. Rape bitches
Hip Hop? Check. - Overhyped artist with an inflated ego? Check. - 0.5/5? Check.
Kinda dug the industrial electronic feel. Unfortunately the content wasn't for me. It mostly goes on and on about how great Kanye is.
If you have 45 minutes to kill and want someone to scream in your ear how they are a god and the best thing ever and how much you hate him even though you don't know him at all. Then this album is for you.
Interested music and production but very very stupid lyrics. 1 for the production. Never gonna listen to Kanye West again when if another one in this list
The best part about this album: it's only about 40 minutes long. What could be done to improve this album: make it 30 minutes. What could be done to make my life better: not having had listened to this album. RIP Hip Hop.
Hip hop was a mistake, and is likely the cause of most of society's ills
I tried… When it comes to controversial people on this list, I easily separate the art from the artist and took the same approach to listening to this album. I haven't listened to a lot of Kanye, but I've heard his earlier albums. This was just unlistenable, and I'm disappointed I couldn't make it past the first four tracks. This is my 271st album on the list and the second one I couldn't make it through. The first, Lana Del Rey's Chemtrails is also a recent addition, but I will acknowledge Kanye does belong on this list and maybe just Yeezus isn't the album that should get him there. 1/5.
I liked some of the more fractured musical parts of this, but the voice grates quite quickly and the lyrics are awful. Not just bad, but actually just grim. I get that ‘Yeezus’ is playing a character, but it’s hard to divorce this from his overblown public ego. With decent (pun intended) lyrics, this could have the makings of a good album. More queasy that Yeezy, unfortunately.
nah. what the hell is this. everything i dislike in music in one album i guess? couldn't really listen to it all, its not good.
The guy is a talentless narcissist who genuinely believes he is gods gift to everything. There are infinitely better unsigned artists out there, why are we giving this idiot airtime? He only gets a 1 because I can’t give it a zero
I have no idea what is good about this. Sounds like a random number generator plugged into a sampler. Lyrically horrible. I took the time to read the lyrics to find out if there is some hidden glory, but it's all Kayne bragging. "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower". This is made for 13 year old boys.
No cliche, musical or lyrical, is too tired for this album. I knew it would be awful but even I wasn’t prepared for this bad.
First look at the "artwork" - Emperor's New Clothes init?! Yeezus Christ, when will these zealots tell him that Ye's not the Messiah, Ye's a very naughty boy!
It amazes me how many people it took to write a bunch of crap songs. And the guy is an a total dick.
What in the blue hell is this? Literally fucking terrible. This was the downturn in quality for Kanye and for me I don’t think he’s ever recovered. Ten years later and he and his music are still on some bullshit.
This was terrible. As someone who really dislikes Kanye, I was surprised by how much more I hated this album than I thought I would. Just terrible.
This is a weird listen in light of his recent comments. It's hard for me to separate the art from the artist. I'm just annoyed by West boasting for 60 minutes.
Urgh. This is October 18th, 2022. I received this album on the generator on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022. I initially paused the generator because I wasn't that familiar with Kanye West's work, so I thought I should spare some time to acquaint myself with his ouevre and give him a more considered take. The next day, Kanye paraded around in a jumper saying WHITE LIVES MATTER. I immediately lost all enthusiasm for writing this review, and indeed just the basic capacity for trudge. He then followed it up with extremely ugly anti-Semitic posts on Instagram and Twitter. I'm not including every event over the last fortnight where Kanye proved himself both nasty and moronic, but the principal effect on me was to deter my review of Yeezus. Every time I tried to write this, I would just stare at the screen, not typing but constantly grimacing. I was worried this album would break me, and I'd quit the generator because Kanye West was an imbecilic cunt. Still, that which does not kill me blah blah blah (by the by, the context of that quote from Nietzsche always gets dropped: he actually says that military view of life is "That which does not kill me blah blah blah"). And I'm reviewing an album, not the person who made it, so perhaps I should swallow up my grievances and just assess the music. Apparently, this is Kanye's dark, challenging album, his raised middle digit to a world that just wants him to perform nice songs for people to dance to. But wehat nobody told me was how slight, how superficial and how meagre this album really is. The music, despite all the advertised influences of early 90s industrial metal (which was never that transgressive in actuality), is just a bit of electronica. It's acceptable, but it's hardly inspired. But that's not the fatal symptom of the album. The album's tubercular cough is (wait for it...) Kanye West, or more specifically the fact that the stances he expresses are incoherent, confused and, in summation, boring. Yes, one can point to his willingness to pick at the scab of affluent segregation in New Slaves (actually, is that especially resonant to the poor, that salesmen try to sell Kanye high-end goods?), but such outrage becomes distinctly undercut by lines like "Eatin' Asian pussy, all I need was sweet and sour sauce". Indeed, there's a vicious misogyny throughout this whole album, but there's none of the illicit thrill of saying the unsayable that, say, Eminem or Ice Cube were able to muster in their best work. It's just Kanye trying to sound like what he thinks a rapper should sound like. It's the sound of a limited man, of a wimpy schoolboy trying to impersonate the bigger boys in a doomed attempt to become popular. And it stings that a work this mediocre is what ruined my fortnight. Anyway, that's the album out the way. I hope Kanye will find it apposite if I review him as a person in the form of a poem. Kanye West is a cunt. A cunt is what he is. He possesses labia majora and he evolved to imbibe jizz. Once a month he menstruates. For his clitoris you may hunt. I know the term is ugly, but the cunt is just a cunt.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME TWO KANYE ALBUMS IN A ROW?!! I see much more negative reviews on this one than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, yet this has the same issues that one seemed to have for me, so I suppose we'll see. Okay, just listened, and man this is a step down, at least for me. I will say the pros is songs still get you enjoying them in the moment, so he still succeeds there, but nothing here sticks with me, and the production has not increased, in fact I'd say stuff like rather than clever samples and an orchestral sound we have this screech-y electronic sound with way too much autotune. Can I hear modern rap in this album? Absolutely, but not a compliment. It also feels worse as we go. Some of these lyrics are also pretty hilariously bad. This is Eminem's level of pun cheesiness for some of these. Just as self indulgent, but I don't see why this album gets that critique and not his other albums. I just don't know what to say. This is alright at best, aggravating at worst, but at the end of the day this was just unnotable. Perhaps if I was very into rap at the time of this release I would of seen the revolution being played, but all I hear is songs made out of dog barks are the drills in the car repair shop while a sex obsessed narcissist knows he can say whatever and will get a perfect score and millions of sales. Yet, I struggle to give this a 1 star. Truly an anomaly. I think it will indeed fall into that 1 star category though. I think fleeting memories of Kanye's work I do like will suffice for me.
You aint got the answers sway! (productie met daft punk) favoriete lyric: het koor natuurlijk met Oh, he'll give us what we need, It may not be what we want. want zo voelde vele zich na het eerste keer te luisteren naar Yeezus. BLACK SKINHEAD: aanrader de live snl versie. Ultieme workout track. HOLD MY LIQOUR: ooooh hier is de hemel weer, Deze plaat maakt me droevig en hype tegelijkertijd. Deze luister ik het liefst om 3 uur snachts na wat teveel gedronken te hebben en me wat alleen te voelen. chief keef gaat zo hard op deze! favoriete lyrics: "Baby girl, he's a loner, baby girl, he's a loner" Late-night organ donor, after that, he disown ya After that he's just hopeless, soul mates become soulless "When it's over it's over," and, bitch, I'm back out my coma. IM IN IT: yo this is nasty, kan ik niet spelen op luidspreker. naast de sexuele handelingen die kanye hier zeer duidelijk beschrijft, krijgen we weer een heerlijk Justin vernon stemmetje en een nummer gevuld met politieke boodschappen. favoriete lyric: Time to take it too far now Uh, Michael Douglas out the car now; kanye loves movies BLOOD ON THE LEAVES: Wat is die drop hoho?? Aretha Franklin I love you. Deze maakt me weer droevig en hype tegelijkertijd. favoriete lyrics: Now you sittin' courtside, wifey on the other side Gotta keep 'em separated, I call that apartheid en ook wel het begin: I just need to clear my mind now It's been racin' since the summertime GUILT TRIP: Weetje: kid cudi en kanye hadden niet echt een goede relatie op dit moment en kid cudi wist niet eens dat hij op het album stond tot hij het hoorde. maar toch goed dat kanye hem stiekem op het album gezet heeft, favoriete lyric daarom ook: If you love me so much then why'd you let me go? (minst favoriete nummer van het album) SEND IT UP: oooh deze maakt me weer hype en droevig op het einde damn. yeezus you are tearing me apart She say "Can you get my friends in the club?" I say "Can you get my Benz in the club?" If not, treat your friends like my Benz Park they ass outside 'til the evenin' end -toxic level 9000 De outro heb ik minstens 1 keer per dag in mijn hoofd. What you doin' in the club on a Thursday? She say she only here for her girl birthday They ordered champagne but still look thirsty Rock Forever 21 but just turned thirty Start a Fight Club, Brad reputation One good chick is worth a thousand chickens - kanye live (weer een aanrader) en natuurlijk Charlie Wilson zijn bridge die next level is.
Amazing album. The first time I ever listened I was very mixed, especially jarred after the intro On Sight, and gave it like a 5/10. But now everything has clicked and I love this like his earlier work. Bound 2 is top 3 Ye songs
Visionary 4.7
Five stars despite Kanye's sometimes shoddy vocals and fucking autotune. The beats are different gear.
Another modern classic from Yeezy; the kind of thing that makes you say "what was he thinking?" on the first listen, but gets more compelling every time you come back to it. It's raw, arrogant, and unfiltered in the inimitable Kanye style. How many other artists could assert "I Am a God" without sounding the least bit corny? His incredible success is tempered only by his own self-destructive tendencies - on "Hold My Liquor" (possibly my favorite on the album, although "Send It Up" is a strong contender), Kanye reenacts a superstar's bender, the sort of horrific "the rules don't apply to me" story that make up a superstar's day-to-day. (And what good is being a superstar if you don't have some Mike Dean synths to back you up?)
I LOVE this album. A lot. Too much. Like, it isn't perfect and a few songs are just fine (e.g. Hold My Liquor and Guilt Trip) but when it hits it really hits. Some of my all-time favorite ye tracks come off of this album (New Slaves, Bound 2, Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves, in that order) and the whole things is just a vibe. I'm In It and On Sight are pretty good, too. It just encapsulates ye's attitude and lo-fi era perfectly (I Am a God) and the lyrics are consistently hilarious and iconic. It's just. Great.
This is probably my favorite Kanye album. On sight and black skinhead are all time bangers and bound 2 is also hella good
Ah yes. Death grips-lite. I fuck with the album the long way. Easily my favorite Kanye.
One of Kanye's finest works, and definitely one of the most formative albums of the decade.
Very Dope, unhinged follow up to MBDTF, probably closer to a 4.5 than a 5 though.

one of my favorite albums of all time. great lyrics, but genuinely perfect production. i dont think we’ll ever see an album like this again, hold my liquor and bound 2 are top 5 and blood on the leaves is top 1. to get the most out of it, play it over headphones and turn it up until the bass plays through your whole body. this listen i great to appreciate i’m in it a lot more, assassin is so good on his feature, i’m shocked i havent listened to anything of his before. this album is quite divisive, and for good reason, but to me it’s a true masterpiece. my favorite album we’ve heard so far, will likely be in my top 5 for the entire list.
From other ratings I’ve seen i know that rap tends to get rated lower, whether it be preference or more… melanin related reasons, this is at least a 4 (ima give it 5 imo) it’s great.
