I'm really relieved that the overuse of autotune period is happily behind us. It's still very much present in this album (with the ho's, bitches and pussy of course) and it makes me want to push the skip button. Some good beats but generally it just sounds like rich rapper with god complex trying to maintain being relevant.

If lyrics are thought as rhythmic elements this is two star album. If lyrics are seen as something else this is pure minus level shit. Average means one star.

I can separate the art from the artist easily enough, but man his mental health was really starting to show here and caused this to get quite boring and repetitive after the first couple tracks

Uh oh it's an objective classic by objectively one of the worst dudes. I separated art from the artist in these reviews before so will do so again and say that I think the production on this album was just mindblowing in 2013, that bit where he mashes up Frank Ocean and a Hungarian psych rock song from the 60s is craaaazy good. lyrics are absolutely mad rampant egoism and obviously problematic and uncomfortable in places but in a way that fits the extremity of the sound really well. FIVE STARS FUCKIT

It is interesting, his music stands out. Not my style but I see creativeness. 5/10

I hate Kanye. An awful, awful human who’s done many unforgivable things. But begrudgingly it’s impossible to not recognise his genius for sampling and song construction. Just a brilliant album and so wholly unique

I really hate rap.

Only got through a couple songs, won't be finishing this. All kinds of red flags of future problems.

This is a tough one. I thought I'd have to give it a decent score because there are a lot of interesting musical choices in the first couple songs (Kanye has always made some unique and cool production decisions). But the lyrical content is oppressively bad on this one, and you can really tie that to exactly the time period where this motherfucker really revealed himself. I think this is worth about two stars on the merits, but I'm going lower because seriously, fuck this guy.

Hahahah bon bon bon . 3.5 Déjà trop controversé ce gars. Après j’avoue que j’ai écouté cet album au lycée. Ça change du rap qu’on a l’habitude d’écouter comme 50 cents. Il arrive a rendre le rap plus moderne dans le sens qu'il melange les instrus, il y a des morceaux ou il chante donc plus simple a ecouter. Par contre le site ne s’est pas mélangé les genres correctement. Les instrus sont interessantes, chaque chanson a une instru tres differente - c'est cool. Des chansons qui denoncent. Bon quand il dit "I am a God" doucement loulou.

his last good album

The sampling is interesting, but most of the lyrics and the entirety of his personality are off-putting.

Electronica and rap from someone with such low self-esteem that he has to constantly state how great he is while denigrating others; one stop shopping for all the worst things that can still be called music.

An album so brash, offensive, and egomaniacal, that the genuine moments of tenderness and social critique shine through all the brighter.

What a weird and wacky album, in a good way. The samples clash really hard with the songs they are put in, almost funny at times. The other soundscapes Kanye creates are really bizarre too, from Lion roars to whatever random skeet sound there is. It was always a surprise to hear what the next track was going to be, really couldn't predict it. I like this over his generic and more Pop Rap-esque albums. Can hear that a lot of artists took inspiration from it. Still not entirely my thing though, wouldn't really revisit it more than once.

Musically this exceeded my expectations, but lyrically I just find it all so unnecessary. Maybe I don't understand the culture but it seems needlessly aggressive, especially towards women. I'm at the point in my life where it just immediately turns me off.

this is good but not as compelling for whatever reason as his earlier albums for me. maybe i need to relisten with headphones so i can hear the details more. but i think i miss the chipmunk soul elements from his earlier work, whereas this opts for a more militant sound, which feels really mid-2010s to me and of its time in a way that isn't its fault. it works really well in a lot of these songs so i think it's just a personal preference. the word play is still excellent. Obligatory comment about how many of these songs in particular aged really poorly given his trajectory. "I am a god" reminded me that it was around this time that people started to really take issue with his arrogance and oh boy don't i wish we could go back to that being his biggest offense. Death Grips is a cool band

My couple of years doing this list have lined up pretty closely with the fall of Kanye West. Right now, it seems like they’re trying to rehab him and get him out there again. I guess someone figures they can still make money off of Kanye West t-shirts, as long as they don’t give him the keys to the website so he can put swastikas on em again. Fool me once.

I saw him live once. Waited so long for him to come out the drink I had pregamed with wore off. Show wasn't bad though. I used to enjoy his stuff, good lyrics, flow and beat. Then he started talking all Hitler was a good guy and went on Alex Jones with a white supremacist. I hope he gets the help he needs, but I'm not giving him anymore of my money. This would be a 4-5 star album. I can't give it that though.

Wow has this guy really declined! His first two albums were amazing, but this album is more of the same decline that he shown up to this point.

This album is so overproduced it gives the impression that the good moments are more luck than judgement.

I didnt listen to the whole thing bc Kanye was dropping the N word way too much for my 5 year old not to pick up on it so I switched it over to yesterdays album from common who used the same word a little bit more sparingly. Suffice to say I really liked the common album and what I heard from the Kanye album. I have some conflicts about giving his material my energy but he’s Flippin talented.

Strong start all the way through to New Slaves. Hold My Liquor a weaker track. I’m In It is like 2 tracks in one, could do without the first half. I like the electronica, slightly jarring sounds and distorted vocals throughout - makes it an interesting album and unexpected (not explored him in any depth before). 4 for me.

Aside from most of the dick lyrics and ignoring the king dickhead himself, I was very impressed with the sounds and samples and innovation on this album. Tracks 2-5 in particular will be saved and played.

Won me over a bit around Blood on the Leaves but I'm generally not in the mood for hip hop this industrial/abrasive - and if I am I think I will be sticking with Brown's Atrocity Exhibition.

An interesting departure, but too industrial for my my taste and lacking both the depth and the quality his previous album contained.

Never let it be said there weren’t signs of how crazy he would get. Yes it a strong album from him, stripped back and harsh instead of his rich orchestral parts. But his lyrics really demonstrate how much he’s losing it even then. If he would have stopped at Dropout or MBDTF or Throne, absolutely greatest of all time, but the decline begins here. Blood on the leaves is legitimately insane

Yeezus is Kanye's one of his most interesting albums and it's still pretty amazing. The sound of this album was not completely unheard of at the time in the underground, see Death Grips among others, but Kanye was the main driving force behind bring the experimental and industrial side of hip hop to the mainstream audience so it most definitely deserves its spot on this list. The production here is the most in your face Kanye has sounded before and he achieves this with a number of collaborators on that front with the biggest one for me being the Daft Punk produced tracks. This is just a huge departure from everything he had done up to this point, but his artistry is incredible and he manages to pull together an amazing set of songs. On Sight is the PERFECT way to open this album, its braggadocious and confrontation all over the beautifully robotic beat. There was no better way to prepare the listener for the rest of this album and its one of the highest points of Yeezus for me. Then right after that heater comes Black Skinhead with the most stacked line up of producers perhaps on the whole record. 'Keep it 300 like the Romans' might be one of the funniest lines he's every said, but seriously the chorus he is fucking great. Again another extraordinary song after another with I Am A God, an overly self-indulgent and agressive hit that never fails to make me feel like I am 'that guy'. More just mind blowing produciton with how they work those screams into the instrumental as well. New Slaves caught my ear most on this relisten with that gorgeous outro. Holy shit I was not prepared to hear that, but I was fully enthralled. And that Nina Simone sample??? Blood On The Leaves is gold once that first chorus hits and the beat fully kicks in with Nina coming through occassionally it just become heavenly. Finally, just as the opener could not have been picked better, the closing track Bound 2 was always destined to close out this amazing record. One of the most recognizable sample flips of the 2010's for good reason. Just such a warm closer for how cold and self serving the rest of the songs are. Chalie Wilson just steals the spotlight here and delivers an etheral bridge that puts this song all the way to the top of Kanye's whole catalogue. At this time, Kanye was amidst a long streak of creative brilliance and Yeezus was another smash hit in his catalogue while adopting a new sound for him, yet he's still able to work in his own identity and create something only he could. A whole unique take on this genre that still is catchy and abrasive yet still fully holds Kanye's fingerprint with his iconic sampling style.

Not one of my favorite Kanye albums, but it was still pretty solid. Still, it probably overrelied on samples and remixes with basic Kanye lyrics in between.

Kanye West – Yeezus (2013) On Day 264, this record delivered absolute chaos in the best way possible. "On Sight" requires a mandatory 100 listens cranking that track on the aux is pure cinema, hitting like a serene, blown-out masterpiece. At the opposite end, "Bound 2" closes the project out with an incredible, soulful flip. Those two stood as massive highlights alongside heavy hitters like "Black Skinhead" and the sheer atmospheric brilliance of "Hold My Liquor." The only real dip in quality was "I Am a God"—the irony of having an actual feature credited to God and still delivering the weakest song on the tracklist is hard to ignore. But beyond that misstep, the sheer "fuck-it" attitude of the album makes it legendary; it functions like anti-music crafted in the most artistic way imaginable. Prime, fearless Ye. An undeniable 5/5.

Currently going through every Kanye album for fun and this is fun! Black Skinhead 13 years later still hits like a freight train, the rest of the album is good but it’s not his best - that’s currently between graduation and 808s at time of writing xox

Nah, 1 star. City pop album in lieu of Kanye -------- PACIFIC by Haruomi Hosono and other artists Rating 4.1/5 Imbues everything that is what city pop became known for. Chill, coastal highway vibes and would be lovely in most contexts. I like City Pop for this when that's where it wants to go.

The person is a 1. The album is, to my ears, a 4. I did not listen to this album before typing this review. I'm going entirely off of my memory. Unlike "The College Dropout" & "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", I do not have an annoyingly deep connection to this album, nor do I find it to be a timeless classic. It's definitely influential, don't get me wrong, and I'd say it's a good album. Hell, great even. A lot of modern rap's more aggressive soundscapes in the late 2010s & even into the the mid-2020s owe their grimier, electronic, bass-heavy pulses to Kanye West bringing these styles into the mainstream. Is it just Kanye doing his best Death Grips impression? Yeah, to a point. For the casual crowd coming off of MBDTF though, this must've felt like an insane departure, and for 2013 especially, ushering in more of a jazzier conscience renaissance from Kendrick Lamar & others, the digital pollution this album brings to the table had to have been fascinating. Kanye's ego has swelled here even further than on MBDTF (hell, "I Am A God" exists). As with that album, he was driven by that stupidity and that ego to try and push the genre forward instead of spreading hate. In that sense, I miss this asshole for trying to be a revolutionary & frankly succeeding, and not being a Nazi sympathizer for the fun of it. I just think that, despite its highest highs (Black Skinhead, New Slaves, Blood on the Leaves & Bound 2 are all still kind of incredible) & a general lack of lows (though there are total some stinker lines on this, to my memory), the overall quality of the album occasionally suffers from a bit too much experimentation at the expense of the flow of the album. Combine all of that with my lack of deeper experience with this album, and I'm just stuck at a 4. To repeat: as always with Kanye's stuff, I did not listen to this album again before giving it this 4. I'm going off of my memory with this, and perhaps I'm robbing this of a star for not doing so. I don't really care. It would be incredibly easy for me to rate this a 1 based on who he is now, in the year 2026, and move on, and give myself the moral brownie points. Hell, I did that for Kid Rock. I can't bring myself to do it here, if only because Kanye's place in the musical landscape is too firmly established, & the version of him that existed when this album was put on the list did not carry the same baggage as the neo-Nazi who exists now. Fuck Kanye West. He does not deserve another dime, and I've fully removed his music from my rotation. It does deserves to be rated fairly, though. And for me, with this album, it's a 4. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ So, what DID I listen to today instead of Kanye? Well, the last time we got Kanye, I listened to Sean Kingston. This time, I listened to Rick Astley's debut album, "Whenever You Need Somebody", just for the hell of it. I mean, if it were on the list, I’d be at a 4.5 that I’d bump down to a 4. I’m surprised at how good it was. Rick Astley’s voice is genuinely really good. “Never Gonna Give You Up” has a billion plays for a reason; if it were actually bad, nobody would’ve kept Rickrolling each other 20 years ago. It would’ve died a very quick death as a quick internet fad, and Rick Astley’s career wouldn’t be as noted as it is now. The man is the internet’s darling, partially because he ran with the joke & has taken full advantage of it. It’s a miracle that the album, in totality, runs off of that track’s success as a tone-setter and doesn’t really fumble the ball until near the end. Yes, the title track is basically just the first track again, but the album is defined by the energy of its soundscapes as much as it is Rick’s vocals. The rest of the tracks, save for the finale, are structured in a “Wham!-era George Michael with Pet Shop Boys-esque production” way, with occasional dips into the style Max Martin would later use on Britney Spears’ bubblegum pop hits. Rick’s vocal inflections really do invoke George Michael, and while his register is deeper & bassier, if you just focus in on them, you can kind of implant George in. It’s surprising. Instrumentally, it’s ‘80s as hell, but it feels like synthpop disco, with dips into Sonic CD-esque soundscapes. Again, the Pet Shop Boys, but with a bit less house in the mix. The album does falter a little bit with both “No More Looking for Love” & “You Move Me”, mostly because of the flat energy in the former & the misordered/weak lyrics in the latter, but it really nails the landing on the last track with the cover of “When I Fall in Love”. Rick Astley can totally pull off Sinatra-esque traditionals with his voice, and I’d say he channels Nat King Cole remarkably well there. It’s a great closer to a genuinely good album. If it were on the list, I’d be at a 4.5 bumped down to a 4. I think it legitimately would earn a spot, and I may consider it as part of the user albums list when this is all said & done. Even if I only fully enjoyed 8 out of 10, the other 2 tracks are still totally fine. If they weren’t there, I would probably be at a 5, even despite the longer outros messing with the pace a bit. It’s pretty good. It sold 15 million fucking copies, dude. That's gotta be worth something.
