pretty aight, not too crazy abt soul but this is quite good even tho its not really my thing.
yeah this is js some great new wave, not too much more to say
mildly entertaining background music that doesn't really do anything at all for me except sound nice i guess. no woman no cry is pretty great tho
hey first album here i've heard before! this has always been my least favorite of the "big 3" stones albums, which is weird because it feels like it should be the most up my alley. for whatever reason, i've just always preferred exile and let it bleed, both because the highs are higher on those two and also i feel like they're generally more consistent (in my opinion at least). that being said, brown sugar definitely ranks among the best stones tracks, and honestly the entire first 4 songs on this record are the strongest 4 of any stones record (that i've heard).
and honestly, listening back to the rest of the record, it has grown on me and is a decent bit better than i remember, though still not as good as exile or let it bleed (but i can see that changing in the future!). still very much up there with the stones' best tho, and easily deserves its classic status and its spot on this list. easy 5 stars
i've tried to get through this record i think three times before? and never actually been able to sit through it completely without getting bored out of my mind by like the 4th track. now tbf this was a long time ago and my taste has changed a lot since them, but this definitely gave me pretty low expectations going into this.
and honestly? i guess it wasn't as awful as i thought it would be (i didn't outright hate it or fall asleep listening, though i came close), but it definitely wasn't memorable; the only parts of it that stood out to me and stuck with me at all were the iconic "intro" and the bassline in "fantasy", while the rest all just blended together. it pretty quickly got both boring and a little annoying, though i guess it can make pretty good background noise if i have nothing better to put on.
instead of taking time to talk about why i don't think this should be on the list, i'll just say a few names of albums that try to do similar things to this but much more successfully: turn on the bright lights, hurry up we're dreaming, carrie & lowell, in colour (which is by a side project by a member of this band! it even has a song, "loud places", which is just like the songs on this album if they were interesting!), overgrown, untrue.
(also, why is this the first indie record i get? couldn't i have gotten something actually good instead?)
in short: 2/5 album, very boring, has no right to be here over other stuff that does the same thing much better
not a bad record! a tiny bit too bluesy for my taste on the less jammy songs, but the jams were amazing, as to be expected from a "jam band". maybe not my favorite thing ever but i can definitely see myself coming back to it if i'm in the mood. the first half was pretty good but nothing too special, but once they got to the jammier songs the album really picked up, so this probably deserves 5 stars; its really good and i quite highly recommend!
i mean this is kinda just worse beach boys but the beach boys are really great so like is that even that bad? 4/5
another one i've already heard! never been too crazy about this album to be honest. obviously everybody wants to rule the world is one of the greatest songs of all time, but the rest of the album is pretty lackluster. even shout, which i've heard called just as good as everybody wants to rule the world by some people, doesn't really click with me. 3/5 largely off the backs of everybody wants to rule the world and head over heels, though definitely deserves to be on this list, js not something i like too much myself.
not thrilled at all for this one... on one hand i like 00s garage rock and southern rock, but at the same time i have no trust at all in kings of leon to pull them off well.
honestly it wasn't as bad as i expected, it's an interesting fusion of two genres i like and it's done pretty alright, so once i got over his vocals i decently enjoyed it, but it's nothing super special nor something i see myself returning to. it did kinda blend into the background but its definitely not the worst thing i've heard, nor the most boring thing i've heard on this project. that being said, definitely does NOT deserve to be on this list; its neither notable enough nor interesting enough to deserve this spot.
3/5
oof this was a CHALLENGING listen... i went into this expecting something pretty good, especially because the genres seemed interesting and i generally do kinda enjoy this kind of music but this was really just painful to listen through. the one notable exception to this was two songs in the middle: "not if you were the last junkie on earth" and "every day should be a holiday", which were just some pretty alright alt rock songs, though nothing too special. (i can't tell if they're actually good or if i just liked them because they were a relief from the rest of the album!) "pete international airport" was also quite nice because it actually gave me room to breathe while listening, and was just a nice ambient track in general. the rest of the album was just droning nonsense with nothing noteable happening at all. 1/5, only redeeming factor are the three songs in the middle where it gets listenable.
(also should not be here, this absolutely does not rank among the 1001 most important albums of all time)
this is giving me sex drive i didn't even know i had. 5/5
i've been trying to give longer reviews to albums i don't like to try to articulate on why i don't like them, but i don't really have anything to say about this; it's just boring to me. only exception is the last song which was pretty good. sonic youth have always been a pretty mediocre band to my taste, and i know i probably just don't get them, but i did expect at least a little more from this i guess. 2/5, honestly can't tell if this deserves to be on the list or not, though there is already a lot of sonic youth here
ah, hip hop. the one genre of music i really just do not understand at all. i get the appeal, i understand how it could be good, but it just does nothing for me except serve as background music, and this record was nothing different than that for me. i genuinely cannot say anything of note about this except i completely don't get it. 3/5 (prolly what i'm gonna give most rap records here), though definitely deserves to be here just off of cultural significance
unremarkable but not in that boring of way, almost in a comforting way? still forgettable tho, and prolly shouldn't be here. 3/5
soft rock is just a genre i'm generally not a fan of, as i always find it rather forgettable, though pleasant to listen to i guess. i've been putting off listening to rumours forever now so this is my first exposure to fleetwood mac and it's really just alright? it's pleasant enough and i can tell it's probably good, but it doesn't really stick with me at all, like most soft rock. 3/5, probably deserves to be here but i definitely don't get it
this has to be the biggest surprise i've had for an album on this project yet. i expected to hate this and procrastinated listening to it much longer than i have for much worse albums, but honestly i quite enjoyed this! elvis costello is a name i've heard but never paid much attention to until now, so i was pretty reluctant going into this, but this was some really nice artsy new wave kind of thing! my only complaint is that it was a little long, but i can definitely see myself coming back to this! high 4/5
on one hand this goes really hard. on the other hand this was the longest 30 minutes of my life; none of the songs do anything except reuse the same three guitar chords over and over again over vocals that sound the same even if they're technically different. i think i was probably paying too much attention though; i bet i'd enjoy it a lot more if i treated this as background music instead or something like that. 3/5, deserves to be here despite how downright stupid it is.
can i stop getting the most boring indie records whenever i get one? like this is so painfully mid and boring to me. i feel like half the issue is the production is just really bad on this, if the guitars were higher up in the mix i could see this being quite a bit more enjoyable but idk. 2/5, really unimpressive and boring
another one i've already heard! to be honest i've always found this one a bit overrated, but i still think it's a great album; definitely a lot better than most of the completely forgettable filler that's present on this list. 4/5, pretty carried by once in a lifetime, and definitely deserves to be here!
while i do consider myself a radiohead fan, this is the one album of theirs i've listened to that i haven't been able to get at all. i can tell it's good, i understand the vision behind it, and yet i just don't like it. i think it's a little too cold and unforgiving for my taste, and it doesnt have any standout tracks for me unlike kid a that help make it a bit more accessible. 3/5, not sure if it deserves to be here (especially over their 2016, which is their best and much much better than this one)
not bad at all! didn't expect to like this because i'm not a huge bowie fan, and honestly i can tell it's not his most artistically valuable work, but coming from someone who can appreciate a good pop tune this is quite nice! 4/5, but not sure if this deserves to be here
oh this is EASILY my favorite album i've found so far from this project. i was already very much aware of this one and had it on my list of stuff to check out, but i hadn't gotten an excuse to listen to it before this. this was a good bit better than i expected, but honestly i'll enjoy anything with a dance beat behind it so i expected to at least kinda like this. i know the samples are the biggest part of this, but honestly i don't care too much about the technical side of this i just think it sounds good and makes me feel like dancing tbh. 5/5, easily deserves to be here and highly reccomend!
very nice soul! her voice is incredible. 4/5
i think the main thing i've learned from this list so far is that i like country a lot more than i thought i did; even though i'm getting this right after at folsom prison, which is clearly a better record than this, i still quite enjoyed this and it didn't feel like it was outshined. this one's just a nice short and sweet country pop record, and i love myself some nice cozy country/folk! high 4/5, feels a bit derivative so i'm not sure if it deserves to be here but i quite enjoyed it nonetheless!
beck is a name i've heard thrown around a lot but i've always personally stayed away from because the stuff i've heard is a bit too hip-hoppy for my tastes, so this is my first exposure to a full album of his. honestly it wasn't the worst thing ever, even though i didn't really enjoy it, i just thought it was alright more than anything else. if anything i was a little frustrated; the tracklist is filled with a bunch of weird experimental songs that aren't the worst thing ever but don't really work for me, and then a few songs on it are randomly quite good (notably the more indie rock or folkier songs, like the closing track and "lord only knows", my favorite beach boys song), leaving me wishing the rest of the record was like that. but overall it wasn't the worst thing ever, just mostly forgettable and a tiny bit annoying. low 3/5, probably does not deserve to be here
tvotr is a band i've known of but never really cared too much for for quite a while now, so this is my first exposure to one of their albums. this album was overall pretty good; even though it isn't something i'd come back to it did have some parts that i quite enjoyed (staring at the sun and poppy most notably), though some songs were a bit worse. i'm not the biggest fan of tvotr's style as a whole so i didn't exactly expect to like this very much, but it was definitely not as bad as it could've been knowing that. high 3/5, not sure if it deserves to be here; i didn't like it very much but i can tell it is a very creative and interesting indie rock album, just something i didn't enjoy too much myself
ehhh i'm sorry but i don't really care for frank sinatra... his songs are nice when i'm not listening to a whole album, but an entire 45 minutes of what effectively feels like just the same song 16 times? no thanks. high 2/5, at least the song that he was repeating was pretty nice i guess. does not deserve to be here, i trust that frank has better and more deserving albums of the spot on the list than this one.
i think the generator knew i've been loving all the country albums it's been giving me, so it gave me another! and i am quite glad to report that this one is also amazing! dolly parton is obviously legendary but i've never really given her a chance before, so i was quite pleasantly surprised by this record being as good as it is! i love this sort of whimsical, bittersweet, and very cozy country, and her voice being as amazing as it is only adds to that. 5/5 i really enjoyed this! definitely deserves to be here
another rap album! except this one was worse than just being background noise for me and went as far as to make me dislike my experience with it. i know it's an objectively good album, but these guys' fusion of hip hop and reggae felt like it took only the worst parts of both to make an album i really did not enjoy at all. 2/5, also probably deserves to be here just from how i know it is objectively really good, just not smt i like myself
pretty unimpressive but also pretty good considering that; high 3/5, though i will likely forget about it within a week. also probably doesn't deserve to be here just because it's so unimpressive
everything i hate abt hardcore combined with everything i hate about hard rock with three white dudes rapping over it, one of whom has the most annoying voice i've ever heard. the production is cool i guess but ughhhhhhhhhhhhh 1/5
oh wow this was a LOT better than i expected. did not have very high expectations going in only knowing "just what i needed" which i was honestly pretty lukewarm on, but i very much enjoyed the full album a lot more! this is joining the short list of things i've found from this project so far that i'll actually come back to, and honestly is one of the best albums i've gotten so far overall. i think i just like power pop honestly and this is like THE power pop album so i guess it makes sense i liked it. also totally deserves to be here! 5/5
never particularly cared for silver jews despite them being very much something i should like, but i was pleasantly surprised by this album, as it's definitely my favorite that i've heard of theirs, despite their two right before this typically being considered better. also no country tag on this is a little crazy, this is definitely a country album. high 4/5, though not sure if it deserves to be here over some other better and stylistically similar bands from this time period (built to spill, songs: ohia, uncle tupelo)
this is quite good but it's annoyingly safe; it doesn't really try to take any risks to really do something actually interesting or memorable, just establish a very pretty and satisfying atmosphere. i did enjoy this atmosphere, but i really wish the album tried to inspire more actual emotion rather than just conjuring a pretty mood, because if it did i could really see this becoming a favorite of mine; i loooove the sound and i am a sucker for really any sufficiently pretty blend of folk and electronics like this album offers. 4/5
soooooooooooooo unbelievably painfully boring. at first i didn't mind it that much, but then as it just kept going and didn't do anything interesting at all and i just started to hate it. i respect the art and the fusion of traditional indian and
more contemporary forms of music, it's just a shame it happened to be done in some of the worst "music" i've ever heard, if you could even call it that from just how nothing it is. also the first album here i've actually stopped, because i really could not bear another 20 minutes of this after i had already suffered through 30. 1/5, and should go without saying that this isn't even close to being among the most important 1001 albums of all time.
quite nice mainstream alt rock record, was pleasantly surprised by this one! expected it to be pretty boring but it ended up being really good! 4/5, deserves to be here
super inoffensive and bland, though in a genre i quite like so i did enjoy this. not really gonna take anything away from this, but it's an album of some nice enough folk pop tunes. high 3/5, not sure if it deserves to be here or not
a lot weirder than i expected but very good! another that was already on my list of stuff to check out, mostly because of brian eno, but this was nothing like i expected it to be. quite honestly, i don't really understand what this band is doing, all i know is that it sounds good and i like it. very high 4/5, will likely come back to this, and likely deserves to be here, although they have three albums and this is the lowest rated of them so i'm not completely sure if they need to have three and if this one should be kept
