I knew many of these songs well, but honestly I don't think I'd ever listened to the whole album in one setting, and didn't know it flowed so seamlessly from track to track. It's excellent and makes me realize that no one contemporary has dared to release music that speaks to the political turmoil since like... The Chicks??
The Smiths are a bit of a blind spot for me. This was their final album (and it came out 3 years before I was born). I can't believe it's only 36 minutes long! I thought that was just a thing the current pop girlies did. For such a short album, there are several moments where it feels like I'm listening to a jam band. Pretty much every song is either too short or too long, but I listened to it 4-5 straight times while working and there's no skips.
It is a ‘me’ problem that I find that most reggae songs sound similar… and no matter how serious the subject matter of the lyrics, the vibes always invoke sitting on a beach with a pina colada
I appreciate the musicianship, but jazz isn't something I will actively put on. I enjoyed learning that his god given name is indeed Thelonious Monk, a new fun fact to me. Only a 5 song album but boy is each one sprawling.
I found this to be more listenable than the jazz album from yesterday. I could see myself returning to this for background dinner party music or something.
Coldplay really was cooking with their first few albums. I had this - their debut - CD as a literal child but it's been awhile since I sat with it in its entirety. Sparks and Yellow remain among the coziest, best love songs of all time. There's a couple skips but overall a really nice time.
I consider myself to have been pretty locked in on the Lilith Fair types of the Beth Orton era, but I've never even heard of her?? This album is pretty boring to me. Even Stolen Car, far and away the biggest song on this album, isn't sticky.
They have a thing for airplanes, huh? This album is all over the place but still a solid ride. lottttts of clear Beatles inspo going on too. Interesting to read the history that most of this album was written without their primary songwriter from past albums. Also hilarious that Eight Miles High was banned from some radio stations; it's sooo harmless.
Another musical blindspot! I'd heard the name Donald Fagen but didn't know he was in Steely Dan whoops! The word that kept coming to mind is groovy. It sounds very 80s but also very fresh for the time. I love the homages to radio DJs
Ya know what, I'm a sucker for some Americana. The 2nd half of the album kinda blends together for me but it starts really strong
Surprise surprise I've never listened to a full Iron Maiden album before. I knew from the jump that it wasn't for me but I found it to be more listenable than I thought it would be. I highly doubt I'll return to it but it was fine.
A pleasant listen, as my experience with Neil Young usual is. Wild that he broke his writers block by reading a screenplay for a movie that was never made
It's wild having never heard this album but having heard many punk rock albums/songs that came after it -- I can only imagine how inspirational and revolutionary this must have sounded at the time. I love the 'fuck you' move of shooting their album cover in drag. I would've thought they were cool as hell if I was a teen when this came out. Not sure how much I'll return but Personality Crisis is pretty sticky
What an absolute smash. 3 songs with well over 2 billion streams. Even more than that were EVERYWHERE when this album came out. One of the last gasps of monoculture tbh. Justice for "I'll Be Waiting" -- there's no reason for it to have the lowest streams on the album by far. This album will go down as a true classic.
Early yet-to-be-polished Queen! I enjoyed but it started to drag.
I didn’t know annnnnything about this band. I dig the album! I have no idea what “post punk” means but there’s some great songs on here that I could imagine hearing on modern alt rock radio
Blues! The bluesiest blues to ever blues. I had it on while working in the office and it was a fine time but nothing really stood out. Solid album experience if blues are what you’re looking for.
