1001 Albums Summary

One of the defining alt records of the early 90's. I listened to this CD endlessly when it came out and still love it just as much today 30+ years later as it somehow still feels fresh and innovative.

Admittedly, I always hit "next" through the Girlfriend/She's Out Of My Life snoozers, but otherwise wall to wall (get it) disco dancin' bangers that ya can't help but move to.

I never really got caught up in the "brit-pop" wave because it just never resonated with me. Academically, I can understand the appeal of this album and how someone COULD love it, but it's nothing I ever really want to listen to again.

I heard the hits from this album so many times on the radio growing up that I was burnt out on them before I even knew who it was. Of course, that's not Bruce's fault. I've tried to be a Springsteen fan at the behest of buddies ("dude, have you listened to The River?"), but at it's core, it's a very specific early 80's "rock and roll" sound (also see: Bob Seger) that I find hard to stomach. You can't help but tap your foot to it at times, but it's going to be permanently relegated to the FM dial for me.

A lot more "ballad-y" than I remember. My problem with The Eagles is that they kinda fall into a crack between my listening moods: they're not *hard* enough to really rock, they're not *country* enough to really twang, and they're not *smooth* enough to make love to your old lady to. They're kinda a little bit of everything but not enough of one thing. If this was on in the background while I was eating a hot dog in a bar I wouldn't be mad about it, though.

Forever a unique voice, great production front-to-back, not a dud on the whole album. I think I appreciate this one more over the years than when it first came out.

It's always a feat to create music that can be heard 60 years later and is instantly attributable to a particular artist. There's no question Nina Simone is one of those artists. Such a unique powerful voice and a unique woman behind it. Not something I tend to reach for, but I always appreciate her music.

I grew up on early 90's alternative music. This era of REM and this whole sound in general, to me, is indicative of the bridge between the 80's bands like The Smiths towards what become the early 90's alternative sound. I can appreciate it for the significance, but it never really resonated with me.

I think this somehow slipped through the cracks for me, likely because I had a preconceived notion of what it was and figured it wasn't for me, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting more Joni Mitchell but it was closer to Velvet Underground. Definitely something I'll put into the rotation.

Live albums are such a visceral time capsule of an artist and the audience at a specific time. Early 60's New York at a James Brown show was probably a hell of a time and it really comes through on this recording.

I can acknowledge it's significance and I'm sure it influenced many of the alternative/rock bands that I would go on to love, but I just never got too into punk so this is an album I would just probably never listen to again. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Crazy to think this came out in '69 since it still sounds relevant. A great mix of lo-fi garage and psych and something extra from its Detroit roots. Fun record and definitely an influence for generations of bands that came after.

Front to back, all 5 star songs. Unique voice, both literally and figuratively, and it cannot be understated how important that album was to so many people.

This album is classic end-to-end and I still enjoy listening to it as much today as the first time way back when it was unlike anything I'd ever really heard before. Great production, great samples, everything just flows so organically.

I have never listened to this album before. Running Up That Hill is, of course, a banger, but there's a lot of good tracks on here. Certainly a time capsule of a particular era, but also some pretty interesting composition in there.

Like most people, I probably just forever associate The Byrds with "Turn Turn Turn," which is a great song, but that kind of jangle folk from the '60s is something I don't tend to listen to that often. There were some other interesting directions on this album that I wasn't really anticipating: some of the more psychedelic influence and a little bit of extended jam-out that I DO tend to like. It was a pleasant surprise.

Definitely worth a listen.

Never listened to it before, but I love this era of Fania All Stars and the latin jazz fusion disco soup. Ya can't be in a bad mood with this playing.
