Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides

I knew that someone added a Sophie album to the user submission list, and I’m glad that I’m getting to review this today. I only know the first song off of this album, but I think it’s a beautiful song. On top of that, I love synth driven pop music, so I think this album is going to be right up my alley. Well, despite a strong start with “It’s Okay to Cry,” I really didn’t care for this album. I expected this album to be a gentle sort of dream-pop, but that idea was dashed pretty quickly once “Ponyboy” kicked off. From there, “Faceshopping” was more of the same, with some bass so strong that it ratteled my fillings. “Is It Cold in the Water” was more up my alley; despite the chaos and the sharp sounds it utilized, it was a lot gentler and more melodic than the previous two songs. But from that point to the rest of the album, I just wasn’t impressed. I expected some beautiful and lush melodies like the first track, and I think this album lulled me into a false expectation. Back to “It’s Okay to Cry:” this song is really great. The gentle vocals are excellent, and it’s just a simply beautiful and melodic song. The crescendo at the end came out of nowhere, which made it really effective. I wish more of this album had been like this song. I guess I’m just not into this particular brand of pop music.

Well. That was... odd. I had accidentally hit a song in the middle, and I thought that this was the opening ( "Immaterial"), which I hold is a better to song to start the album with. "It's Okay To Cry" felt weak to start the album in comparison. It wasn't techno per se, but it had a lot of original sounds to it. I laud the originality here, even though I was not a fan of the music as a whole. The reason I didn't care for it was songs like "Immaterial," which was very much "hey let's make weird sounds" to me. So it was original to me, but I wouldn't say I was a fan. NEXT.

Some of Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides worked for me. Some of it was the worst stuff I've heard in a while; Faceshopping and Not Okay are impossible to listen to. It's Okay To Cry and Is It Cold In The Water are decent. The rest is somewhere in between but mostly sounds like a 7 year old fucking around on the family's ancient Casio keyboard. A very low 2/5, it's so hard to actually process most of it.

Weird and not at all enjoyable to listen to.

This is Definitely not music for me. Very minimal lyrics over annoying discordant beats/music.

Though experimental electronic can be interesting, i don't feel very engaged across this album. Faceshopping and Ponyboy became irritating pretty quickly and though Pretending is a bit of a cool sonic landscape, there is a bit too much that is a bit offputting to enjoy.

The opening track is pretty good, then devolves into computer nerd bloops and bleeps.

This was creative, but too indulgent. A much more difficult listen than I anticipated.

I kind of got the innovation in the sound and the mix between electronic and ambient music, but honestly, "boring" is praise for this album.

I’m sorry this was just too much for me. I like the different aspect, but not for me.

First cut is relatively nice/dreamlike - not a style I usually listen to but I'm thinking very nice melodies... ok I'm semi-interested... Then Ponyboy hits. That was ... different. Yeah this kind of jarring chaotic glitchy noise construction is definitively and categorically something I dislike. It's not all glitchy after that but the grand sum including the squeaky hedgehog vocals (track 5) .... this album is not for me. 2/10 1 star. IMO: Belonged in the book? No.

Absolute pish, why was this nominated? It is like the background music in a shite tv show for stupid people. Not a single good track here, just repetitive beats and terrible singing. Possibly worse than that Nico album I had to endure a few years back; certainly the first since then that I thought might be the worst album ever recorded. I was literally wishing for it to be over, thankfully it only lasted 39 mins, but it's 39 too many. Zero stars

When they say there’s music for everyone this is a pretty good example of that. Definitely not something I would ever listen to again but some people seem to like it. This was just the type of pop music that makes me sit in silence instead of 2.1/10

Annoying. The best thing about it was falling quite short of the hour plus listen that I assumed that this would be.

Too soon to be in any Greatest Albums list and even though I always appreciate listening to new music, I couldn’t figure it out much of this one

This was a challenge. It will be some people's favourite album, which I respect, but I personally couldn't get anything out of it and am not sure that most of it is even music. Rating: 1 Playlist track: It's Okay to Cry Date listened: 20/07/24

A disaster. The critics have been sucked into an a case of emperor’s new clothes. Perhaps two songs and the rest is experimental techno drivel like someone has just acquired their first sampler. Awful.
