Reviews
Cool pick. Sturgill deserves a nod for his great body of work. This is a good choice, even if Metamodern Sounds in Country Music might be the obvious one.
This is as good as his first two perfect albums, but it's certainly different. It's country that's not afraid to offend its listening base, both lyrically and musically. So many great lines that speak to me. And that voice: so pure, so effortlessly real. This album is basically a father's metaphorical lovesong to his beloved son. Oh, and this might be the first time a country song referenced Tokyo neighborhoods. That last track, too... conjuring some John Prine anti-war brilliance there.
My dad was a fan of Sturgill Simpson... that's how I first heard about him. This is a beautiful album written from a father to a son so listening to it was really moving. Got to spend some time with dad today. Sturgill Simpson brings that Outlaw country attitude in an updated package that is very appealing to someone raised on a lot of outlaw country music. It's full of advice (Keep It Between the Lines) and a few surprises (the cover of In Bloom is so beautiful - really does the song justice). I love this album.
The blend of country, soul, and psychedelia here really speaks to me. Sturgill's heartfelt and personal lyrics always hit hard; but when he starts listing off a bunch of navy ports nearly incomprehensibly in Sea Stories, we really hit peak music.
Nice. Unexpected. I'll definitely keep listening to this one in the future. Favorite Track: In Bloom, Welcome to Earth
An anti-war country album with tons of brass and a Nirvana cover? Sign me the fuck up. 8/10
Didn’t realise this album was already saved in my Spotify library. Couldn’t remember a thing about it until we got to the Nirvana cover. Actually enjoyed it, despite being outside my usual style. I’ll leave it in the library for now and see if I can remember it next time.
Liked this, but found nothing extremely special about it
I respect this for who it can't from but this was bland and boring to me.
Yea, I liked this
Honnêtement vraiment cool!!!
cool boogie country. The cover of In Bloom is probably the best version of this song I have ever heard. Call To Arms is great. As a whole, its a little flat for me.
Just not my jam. There's very little country I can stand. I can tell he's earnest and it's not the manufactured bro country, but it's not something I'd ever want to listen to ever again.
