I love the setup as a jazz club on this record. It really makes it all flow. The storytelling between songs is a great device. It makes the record a cohesive piece. Some of the best rap/hip hop on these lists do a good job of this as well.

Belle & Sebastian
5/5
The beginning of a great career. A pleasure to listen to every time.
Billy Bragg

UB40
4/5
One of the great things about this list is hearing bands in before they became schlocky 80s ballads. Prime example here. This was miles better than Red Red Wine. More interesting instrumentally and lyrically.
Burning Spear
4/5
Reggae is a style that always surprises me when it shows on this list. Very good.
The Undertones
4/5
Excellent. First time hearing this. Struck me instantly.
2/5
I was about three years too old when Limp Bizkit hit the scene. It was the first music scene I didn’t enjoy. When this came up I thought hey it’s been 20 odd years let’s give it a go. I think the back half was better than the first. However that opening group of songs sounded juvenile. Third album rage I just wasn’t buying. They probably all rolled up to the recording studio in fancy cars and said ok guys time for us to complain about the world.
The Gun Club
4/5
Enjoyed this
Django Django
3/5
Art rock - meh

Neither here nor there on this one.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
First, prog rock is not my thing. Having said that the opening 20+ minute composition - Tarikus- was excellent. However, the rest was inconsistent. You just don’t put the closing track - are you ready, Eddy? - on the same record as the opening track.

Milton Nascimento
3/5

The Killers
4/5
Killers were a band that arrived while I was in university with no time/money to explore new bands. Listening to this record I definitely missed out.

Primal Scream
3/5
I like all the songs but find them all to be too long.
Destiny's Child
3/5
The first three songs are ubiquitous. The rest were fine.

Steely Dan
3/5
I listened to this on a previous list. Enjoyed it more this time through.
Suede
4/5

Common
4/5
I thought this had a lot of interesting content.
Queen
4/5
Strong record
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5

Tim Buckley
3/5

3/5
Interesting enough. Challenging content
Love
4/5
Another band I wasn’t really aware of. I’ve gotten more appreciation for the style of music through this project.

I should listen to more. Non traditional rock elements are seemless and interesting
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I enjoy this but it’s not 1001 for me
Hole
3/5
Glad I gave this a chance again. She annoyed me so I stopped listening to her music. Still a good record. I preferred the previous one. This did have Malibu which is part of why I stopped listening originally. So mixed overall
Beck
5/5

I don’t think there is enough substance here to land on 1001.

The humpty dance! That alone makes it a 4. The rest is golden age of hip hop which confirms the four.

Bad Brains
3/5
Good one to hear. I’ve always know of Bad Brains but never really explored. Happy I have now.

Dire Straits
4/5
I wish I had listened on big speakers. Amazing musicianship.
Traffic
3/5
If was fine.

Solid rock record. Also, the Spotify playing recommended songs for you that followed this was excellent.

Kinda one of the albums that started it all.

4/5
Said it before on Kings of Leon missed them first time around. Probably would have loved them if I was more actively listening at the time.
The Offspring
4/5
Loved this when it came out. Never loved another Offspring record and stopped listening. Still a good record but feels a tad dated to me.
Beyoncé
3/5
I’m just not her target market. I try to approach and understand why people love it and I just doesn’t do it for me.
Carpenters
4/5
Good record with some classic tunes on it.
2/5
Wow. I couldn’t find on Spotify or Apple Music. Tracked it down on YouTube. When I started I thought someone was playing a joke on me. Sounded like a cat fight.
I listened a while longer and by another 20 minutes I started to think it was brilliant. Then about 10 minutes later thought it was awful again.
This one is a ride.
Deee-Lite
3/5
Groove is in the heart is enough to get this a three. The rest is enjoyable enough as well.
The Fall
4/5
Listened on a previous list and was indifferent. This time i really thought it had a lot of interesting things going on. Shows me again why one shot at each of these albums doesn’t always do justice.

A classic from my youth so this review may be overstating things a little.
TV On The Radio
3/5
Good enough
Mj Cole

Mike Ladd
4/5
Never heard of this guy before. Hip hop is not my usual genre and usually leaves me cold. However, I loved the overall sound of this record. He hit on something with the soundscape.

Jethro Tull
3/5
Will never be a Jethro Tull fan. But I enjoyed my time with this record.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Hadn’t really given this one a x chance before. Excellent record. I love really stripped down records in general. This one captures him at a great point.
Caetano Veloso
3/5
Different. Struggle to rate these as they are so far from what I know. It was interesting enough.
Run-D.M.C.
5/5
I usually dread hip hop records. Not my thing. I’m just not the target market for them. My exception to that is records from the golden age of hip hop. I’ve grown to really enjoy these records. This one is no different. I find the anger and rebelliousness present in classic punk here too. While it’s not my experiences I can see these as a clear window into what the groups are feeling and experiencing.
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
I enjoyed this enough. Cinematic in style. Just not sure it’s 1001 material.

Heaven 17

One for my youth.
Barry Adamson
3/5
Won’t be running back to this but it was enjoyable enough.

The Divine Comedy
3/5
It was fine.
Roxy Music
3/5
It’s fine.
Brian Eno
3/5

Travis

4/5
One for my comfort albums when I was to just sing along to the whole thing. Great rock record.
N.E.R.D
4/5

Wilco
5/5
Such a perfect collection of songs. Captures a great moment in music.
Pet Shop Boys
5/5
I’m not a big Pet Shop Boys listener. But this was a great listen all the way through. Lyrically interesting, sonically interesting. Great record.
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
This one surprised me. Very beautiful.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
More than just the one song on here. It’s sort of over powered by the whole legend and you wonder if it’s going to stand up the mythology. It does.

3/5
I feel like this would have been way more exciting live. As a record it was kind of cold and sterile.
The Shamen

Cocteau Twins
4/5
Solid record.
5/5
I think the most remarkable thing about this is that it’s late 60s. If it was I’m the late 70s I could get it. But this ran way ahead of its time.
Napalm Death
4/5
Not my usual sound but I enjoyed this. I guess at a little over a minute per song no individual one drones on for too long.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
So… usually with a record that isn’t in English I comment on how hard it is to rank. This one is different. Working on the assumption that the lyrics are acceptable, this is a great record. The fact that it wasn’t a sound I am used made it all the better.
Baaba Maal
2/5
Hard to rate. On sound and feel. Wasn’t my thing.
Björk
5/5
Another artist that I appreciate now and not at the time. She annoyed me when I was 14 but now I see that there is something special there.
ABBA
4/5
I guess since I hadn’t heard as much of this it didn’t sound tired and over played like a lot of their stuff.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Definitely one that has grown on my based on exposure.
Christine and the Queens
4/5
When I started listening to this the first song or two had me dreading when was to come. A couple of songs later I was feeling better about it. By the end I had been won over.
Ray Price
4/5
Ok. Don’t why but even though this is very country which usually puts me off I enjoyed this.
Scott Walker
3/5
My second time listening to this one on a greatest list. I really tried to enjoy this. I listened to this through a decent enough speaker. It wasn’t on as background music but instead actively listened to. I don’t get it.
Ananda Shankar
4/5
Usually on things so out of my style I
Give a 3 and say that it is hard to rate. This one I very much enjoyed.
Madonna
3/5
Don’t get why it’s on all sorts of lists.
Weather Report
3/5
Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.
Kid Rock
1/5
Didn’t listen. It’s kid rock.
Kate Bush
4/5
Enjoyed this.
Gene Clark
3/5
Probably would benefit from another listen.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Solid record.
Neil Young
4/5
A true classic.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
3/5
Not my thing for the most part.
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
They have been growing on me recently. Another one I didn’t have time for as a teen that turns out was pretty good.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
3/5
It was an interesting listen.
The xx
4/5
This was a band that wasn’t on my radar when I did a previous list. I’ve been listening now for a year or two to them and and they are in my rotation. This is a really good record. They have a lot of cool sounds.
Pretenders
4/5
Someone I know said they went to see Guns N Roses the other day and the open act was pretty good. Some unknown band. Turns out it was The Pretenders - haha. I just looked at them and was like ummmmmm…. Not really unknown.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
A band I’ve thought I was supposed to love but secretly was indifferent towards. Listening to this record made me think I should give more their stuff a chance. Maybe I’ve been wrong in my indifference.
5/5
This is a favourite from my teen years. I never did choose if I was team Oasis or team Blur. I was happy to enjoy both.
Nick Drake
4/5
Growing on me.
Queen
4/5
It’s nice to get a record from a band that you know but haven’t listened to for no good reason. Discovering some songs from long gone band is a neat thing. This album is one of those for me. I enjoyed this a lot.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
Yes it’s near perfection for its time and place.
The Coral
3/5
Second time listening to this. It’s fine.
Mott The Hoople
4/5
I’m not sure why I was fearing this when I was looking at the whole list. I guess I couldn’t envision all the young dudes people doing anything else. I liked this. It was early glam and that was cool.
4/5
I am so glad Devo existed in the world. It would be a less interesting place without them.
The Saints
3/5
Didn’t know the band or record. It was enjoyable. A second listen may benefit.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Second time listening to this and I did it on decent speakers. The psychedelic rock scene isn’t my favourite it I could really see this one was special.
Happy Mondays
3/5
Does really do it for me.
Prince
5/5
Once you get beyond the many many radio hits that Prince has it turns out he has many many awesome albums. This possibly the best.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
It’s funny the day before this I despised to put on a different Jesus and May Chain album. As I did that I was like I am sure tomorrow they will come up on my list. And lo and behold. Really solid record.
Lightning Bolt
2/5
Didn’t do much for me.
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
It was fine.
The Incredible String Band
2/5
Didn’t really get it. I’m sure from some perspectives it is amazing. I’m just not sure what perspective that is.
Neneh Cherry
3/5
In the right mood the new Jack swing thing works for me. Never will be more than sort of a fun diversion in my musical listening world, but a nice diversion on occasion.
Ryan Adams
4/5
Problematic. Great record but has a not great record with female artists.
Can
4/5
I enjoyed this. I guess I’ve had enough exposure through these lists to Can.
Public Enemy
5/5
Exceptional. Not my usual thing but the golden age of hip hop has really stood out for me on these list journeys.
Talking Heads
4/5
They have grown on me over the years.
Aphex Twin
4/5
Not at all my usual style. Listened to some of his stuff on a previous list. I can see why he is as popular as he is. My appreciation for this is growing.
Coldcut
2/5
Didn’t do much for me.
Iron Butterfly
3/5
Only ever heard the title track from them. It was a good enough listen.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
I’ve finally listened to enough Zeppelin that I enjoy them.
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Not my thing.
Beatles
4/5
It’s Rubber Soul. It’s The Beatles.
Sam Cooke
5/5
One of those records that captures a live show that make you wish you were there.
Scissor Sisters
3/5
Not my thing.
The Temptations
4/5
Didn’t really know any of this material from them. Different than I expected. I enjoyed it.
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
Definitely at the top of lost Beatles McCartney
Pink Floyd
4/5
I really enjoyed this record. Something about it hit all the right notes for me.
Robbie Williams
3/5
This has happened more than once on this journey. I feared this record because of my contemporaneous views of it. I did not like anything about Robbie Williams persona and so didn’t give it a second thought. Turns out it was pretty good.
Van Halen
3/5
I think I’m supposed to love this. Just too much for me.
Morrissey
3/5
Fine.
Mekons
3/5
Enjoyed this enough.
Public Image Ltd.
3/5
Will never be a favourite but enjoyed it.
LL Cool J
3/5
Not my thing.
Throwing Muses
4/5
Finally tracked this down on YouTube. I’ve enjoyed Throwing Muses since I was in high school but hadn’t heard this. Wow. Such a great record. Possibly their best.
Billy Joel
3/5
Neither here nor there for me.
William Orbit
3/5
I played it.
Tim Buckley
3/5
He’s never really grabbed me.
Aerosmith
4/5
Over the years I have come to avoid listening to a lot of Aerosmith. This album brought me back to a time where I listened to them in my regular rotation.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Might be my favourite Dylan.
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
I always like the Pet Shop Boys more than I think I am going to on the way in.
Animal Collective
3/5
Didn’t do it for me.
Pink Floyd
4/5
First time I listened to this properly on good headphones and no distractions. Very good record. Solid from start toy finish.
Blue Cheer
4/5
Never knew this existed. I can listen to this one again.
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
3/5
Not my style.
Slipknot
4/5
That was a great record. A lot of variation and different sounds etc.
Keith Jarrett
5/5
I really enjoyed.
k.d. lang
4/5
Yet another I wouldn’t give the time of day to as a teenager. In my older years this is a very well crafted record.
Thundercat
4/5
Didn’t know of Thundercat before listening to this and didn’t know what to expect. This was a really cool listen. A lot going on.
Herbie Hancock
4/5
Another in the long list of better my second time listening to it.
Todd Rundgren
3/5
I can see how people might say this is great.
The Libertines
4/5
They burned brightly for a while.
The Temptations
4/5
Good
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
An artist I had only known through best of records. Listening to full records through this list has been a great joy.
Dexys Midnight Runners
4/5
Listened to a few of their records through previous lists. So much more than come on Eileen.
Tom Waits
5/5
I love the setup as a jazz club on this record. It really makes it all flow. The storytelling between songs is a great device. It makes the record a cohesive piece. Some of the best rap/hip hop on these lists do a good job of this as well.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
So much better than my image of what this group was. I was wrong.
The Dictators
3/5
Did not do it for me.
Leonard Cohen
5/5
I need to listen to more Leonard cohen.
Björk
3/5
Not my favourite bjork. Just didn’t get into it.
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
This blew my mind in the 90s. Still does today.
k.d. lang
3/5
A little too country for me.
The Specials
3/5
Good enough.
The Stooges
4/5
I’m always amazed that music like this was being made at the same time as the Beatles.
Tricky
3/5
Fine.
Dizzee Rascal
3/5
Not my usual style. Didn’t do much for me.
Tom Waits
5/5
One of my favourites.
Ray Charles
5/5
I don’t know Ray Charles’s body of work. I know him more than his music. That’s a shame because I really, loved this record.
Paul Simon
4/5
Enjoyed
Dagmar Krause
3/5
This one lands in the category of what the heck did I just listen too.
Soft Machine
2/5
I some times wonder if I had grown up when psychedelic rock was a thing if these would make more sense.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Not sure both live prison albums needed to be one the list. Could have made space for something different.
Spiritualized
4/5
Enjoyed that.
David Bowie
4/5
Bowie.
Pink Floyd
4/5
Legendary
Leonard Cohen
4/5
More I hear from him the more I want to hear from him.
Raekwon
2/5
Not my thing.
Hookworms
3/5
Some sounded interesting. Some not.
X-Ray Spex
5/5
I love early punk stuff
The Young Gods
4/5
I enjoyed that a lot. Had zero expectations going in. Loved the overall sound and vibe.
Bill Callahan
4/5
This one had a great overall feel to it that ran through out. Need to hear more of this.
Brian Eno
4/5
I continue to be surprised that I like Brian Enos work.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
This is from the age of hip hop I’ve been able to grow to enjoy. Solid record.
The Flying Burrito Brothers
3/5
Neither here nor there for me.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Didn’t do much for me.
The Mothers Of Invention
4/5
Second listen to this one. Made much more sense why it was on the list.
Scott Walker
3/5
I enjoyed the listen on this.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Glad I listened but won’t be running to do it again.
Robert Wyatt
3/5
I am not sure this rose to 1001 level. It was a good enough listen but not sure what made it be on the list. Some of his earlier stuff that was on the list I can see being there. This one not so much.
Big Black
3/5
Not on Spotify so had to listen on YouTube which the throws in ridiculous commercials throughout. So not a great listening experience.
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
Too much ELO can be a little draining. I like them but this record is a little too long for me.
Orbital
2/5
Just not my thing.
4/5
Kinks have been a band that has consistently impressed me in this voyage.
The Modern Lovers
5/5
Nothing sounds like the modern lovers. His voice and pacing of singing is singular.
Slint
4/5
Not sure how I missed this in the 90s. I would have been all over it.
Paul Weller
3/5
This is one that I should probably give another listen to to fully appreciate
Jurassic 5
3/5
Nice groove and overall feel to the record. Lyrically I struggled.
Stan Getz
4/5
Loved this. Moves me to a time I was never part of.
Deep Purple
3/5
Another case of - they had more than one song.
Janet Jackson
5/5
This is probably one of the albums when people ask what surprised me from the list that I will use as an example. I always wrote this off as it came out when I was quite young and as it wasn’t in my typical genre I summarily wrote it off.
Turns out I really like the theme and execution. This is the type of record that I was hoping to find in this 1001 journey.
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
2/5
Really was just kinda there.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
Good record.
David Crosby
3/5
For me it was a nothing.
Black Sabbath
4/5
This is probably my favourite Sabbath I’ve come across. Something about it seemed to hit the right notes.
4/5
This was a surprise. Usually old country I struggle to get through. While the music was really not my thing the songwriting and delivery I thought were great. Really happy to have listened to this one.
Simply Red
2/5
Didn’t do anything for me.
Sinead O'Connor
4/5
I started to listen to her during the pandemic and have been impressed by her whole body of work. She definitely wasn’t treated fairly and should have a had a better career.
Talking Heads
4/5
With psycho killer it’s going to be a good record and it is.
Missy Elliott
3/5
Hip hop that has a sound I enjoy.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I feel I should love echo. I don’t. They are fine enough and I’ll listen when they come on but just doesn’t grab me.
Ramones
5/5
This is just awesome from beginning to end.
Depeche Mode
3/5
It was fine.
Calexico
4/5
These are the records I love to find. Really interesting blend of sounds i a way I haven’t really heard done before.
Erykah Badu
3/5
Really didn’t do much for me. I was
Hoping for more as she’s such a legend but I guess not everything connects with everyone.
Tori Amos
4/5
Great record.
Sugar
4/5
My personal love of all things Bob Mould is further amplified by the fact that this is the record I discovered him through. Emotion would put this as five star but maturity is there enough to say probably should be a four in reality.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
This is about as close to a perfect record as anyone can produce. Not a misplaced note.
The Beta Band
4/5
I have a love hate relationship with the Beta Band. I go through periods where I think they are great and then periods where I find I just can’t listen to them. I was in the latter mood when this came up. Listening to this has nave me to the former.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Definitely had a lot of Zeppelin exposure by this lost and the rolling stone 500. Grown on me a lot over that time.
The Undertones
4/5
This was a nice surprise. There was another undertones record on here that I liked enough but this one really grabbed me. Great sound throughout.
Portishead
4/5
Another in the long list of didn’t real care about them when they first arrived in the 90s. But through these lists I’ve listened to enough to appreciate and enjoy their work.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Nobody has managed to do what the Beastie Boys did. Hip hop/rap with a noticeable rock/punk history that isn’t annoying.
JAY Z
2/5
I tried to enjoy. I didn’t. I’m not the target market which means my review carries less weight. The look at how rich I am mixed with I’m still tough bothers me.
Haircut 100
3/5
Very 80s not sure what elevates it to this list.
Neu!
3/5
Interesting enough.
Mercury Rev
4/5
Another album that at the time I found boring but now appreciate.
Tim Buckley
3/5
I wonder in the days of streaming services is albums with long songs are thing of the past. Anyway, I enjoyed this. Not my favourite but worth a listen.
Morrissey
3/5
Fine.
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
Maybe it just hit me at the right time and another day I might have reacted differently but I really enjoyed this.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
I like a lot of it. Not keen on some of it.
The Flaming Lips
5/5
Nothing else like this on here.
Kate Bush
4/5
Very good.
Arcade Fire
4/5
Good.
The Hives
4/5
Another band I missed from that time period. Enjoyed this.
Richard Thompson
5/5
I first heard this on another list of great albums and remember enjoying it. That didn’t change this time. Very good listen.
Method Man
3/5
Liked the sound and flow but not my thing.
Van Morrison
4/5
I really enjoy a good live record. Usually I prefer when it all comes from one show but this one spread across multiple shows was done very well. Van Morison is someone I have very specific images of in my head but this shows a much more diverse range than I give him credit for.
The Young Rascals
3/5
Enjoyable.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
5/5
This is why I am listening to this list. Every once in a while a record like this comes along that based on my usual listening I have no business enjoying but that really grabs me. From the first track to the last I was listening intently.
Wilco
5/5
This is a personal all time favourite. It was my introduction to Wilco all those years ago. Having read some other reviews on here calling it too long and kind of boring makes me pause and think about all the records I said something similar about. That’s the risk with the one listen approach required when doing a challenge like this. For me the album could go on forever and I’d be happy with that. Not a week track in the group.
The Kinks
4/5
Furthering my comment from the previous day. The shortcoming of this album a day is you listen to a record once and then move on (in general). As I’ve done the RS500 and an NME500 I’ve come across some of these before and on many cases I build a better appreciation the second time around. I’ve really noticed that with The Kinks records. This is a good record.
Serge Gainsbourg
3/5
Doesn’t do it for me.
Fleet Foxes
4/5
Enjoyed it. First time sitting down and truly focusing on a fleet foxes record.
The Verve
4/5
I really enjoy this record but find it a little draggy in the back half.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Love his stuff and this is a stand out album in a great discography
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
Wouldn’t have listened to this otherwise. Probably never will again.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
Definitely qualifies as an album to hear before you die. Just not one I will listen too again.
Brian Wilson
4/5
I enjoyed this.
Roxy Music
3/5
Another in the long list of bands I didn’t have time for before this journey. I’m not seeking them out now, but appreciate when they show up on a shuffle or playlist.
Beck
3/5
Beck, another artist I’ve grown to respect more during this journey. This one though wasn’t a standout for me.
Joe Ely
2/5
This was the country sound I have feared every time there has been a country record on here. Nothing I connect with.
The Cardigans
4/5
Funny, I was about to listen to this record of my own accord the day before it was selected but at the last moment decided not to. I enjoy this album. Has a different sound and feel from its contemporary class. Having said that I don’t see it as a 1001 record. Not sure that it is different enough to really make this list nor do I think it had a lasting impact on other artists. Still I rate it highly as I enjoy it a lot, just question 1001.
John Lennon
5/5
It’s Lennon. It’s Imagine.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Not my thing really. But I enjoyed the listening experience enough.
Pere Ubu
4/5
One that was missing from my musical knowledge banks.
The White Stripes
5/5
I bought this while driving around the Great Lakes with my now wife. This will always have a special place in my heart. And it’s awesome!
Leonard Cohen
4/5
He grows on me with everything I listen too.
The Fall
4/5
Enjoyed it.
Fiona Apple
5/5
What a great debut that set up a path to even more greatness.
The Triffids
3/5
I had never h was rid of them before. Enjoyable listen.
Radiohead
3/5
I am finding that Radiohead albums take multiple listens for me and this was my first for this record. I need to come back and listen again
Doves
3/5
I enjoyed but I don’t see 1001 here.
Prince
5/5
Prince was always a greatest hits type artist of me. This is my second time listening to this record (after listening on another long list). The second listen really shows that there is a lot here. More listens needed to fully appreciate this but I can now see the awesomeness that’s here.
Adele
5/5
Often played in my house as my wife is a really big fan of this record. It becomes harder to rate when you’ve heard it so much. But performance and songwriting are spot on.
Fishbone
4/5
Fishbone always makes me smile.
Dusty Springfield
5/5
This is a classic and it shows.
Fugazi
4/5
Solid record.
The Soft Boys
4/5
I had some familiarity with the main single on this but not the rest of the material. Very happy this was on here. Lyrics and music both enjoyed.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Solid record.
AC/DC
5/5
No real weak point on this one.
Sonic Youth
5/5
This album is amazing full stop.
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
Any album that the flow for da ya think I’m sexy? Was stolen from is good enough for me.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
I think in a parallel universe this might be my favourite record. However, in this one it gets a four.
Tom Waits
4/5
Tom Waits has some very interesting albums.
Cheap Trick
5/5
I had been looking forward to this one. It’s one I had heard a lot about but never listened too. Such a great live record. Would have been great to see performed live.
Grateful Dead
5/5
Two really great live albums in a row generated. Last one was at Budokan now this. So glad I waited until I was able to play this on proper speakers and not just AirPods. You can see why they had their legions of Deadheads.
Snoop Dogg
4/5
I do love the flow in this record.
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
Never been a big a fan. Still not. But I enjoyed.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
4/5
My brother liked these guys when I was younger and I never got into them. I enjoyed this listen.
The Who
3/5
I like the concept. Not sure all the songs hit for me though.
Mylo
4/5
Hade never heard of this before it came up. Very pleasant surprise. Great amalgam of sounds.
Gang Of Four
3/5
Enjoyed it. Second time listening to this one.
Steely Dan
3/5
The music just doesn’t grab me. I’ve listened to Steely Dan on a few lists and it’s yet to make me feel anything. Well crafted and executed songs, but left cold.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
4/5
Just listened to Cowboy Carter with my daughter a few days before listening to this. Funny, this sounds nothing like that.
This was a great view of country for a non-country person. I will never be a country fan, but I really enjoyed the time spent listening to this. There was a very real feel to it and the way it all comes together is just right.
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
Really enjoyed first three tracks then got a little tired of it.
3/5
Muse has never grabbed me and pulled me in. I enjoy their songs but haven’t moved deeper. This listen didn’t change that.
M.I.A.
3/5
Not my thing.
The Cure
3/5
I need to listen to more Cure from this period to really appreciate it I think.
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
This record has an overall sensibility that comes through.
The Zombies
3/5
Good record. Not really
My thing.
Bebel Gilberto
2/5
It didn’t do anything for me.
Turbonegro
3/5
It was fine.
Rush
4/5
Definitely a band that has been growing on me.
Skunk Anansie
3/5
I remember not liking one of their videos back in the day. I forgot that they existed until it popped up on this list. Nothing grabbed me.
Joan Baez
5/5
How have I literally not listened to her much before. I know the name so it’s not lack of awareness. Somehow just haven’t listened. This was great. I love the simple production. Woman and guitar. What more do you need.
George Michael
4/5
This one goes back to just before I really started listening to a lot of music. My brother had it in his cassette collection. I can still along with almost all the songs.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Good record.
Thin Lizzy
5/5
That is one of the best live albums out there.
Joy Division
4/5
Dark
Mariah Carey
3/5
Did not change my opinion about her. She’s a talented singer but don’t like the music.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Awesome.
Van Morrison
4/5
Really good.
Tito Puente
5/5
Nowhere near what I usually listen to. It was a great listen
The Police
3/5
Good record to listen to.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
This one I could see throwing on again.
John Grant
4/5
Way better than I expected from the cover. I thought it would be some overdone arty piece. Totally more chill.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
Played it on proper speakers. Love it.
DJ Shadow
5/5
I didn’t have high hopes for this. I was so wrong. Just awesome.
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
The forest half had some songs.
Ice T
4/5
Classic hip hop that I’ve grown to respect during these voyages.
KISS
3/5
KISS has always been such a sales tactic during my life that it’s never felt like a real band. I guess it is one.
Dwight Yoakam
3/5
Yup. That’s country.
George Jones
2/5
Two full on country records in a row. I sure hope I get something better next.
The Residents
3/5
I was getting tired of a couple days in a row of country. Then I got this. Not sure what this even was. Somehow I think duck stab was the right title for this piece.
The Prodigy
3/5
I swore I listened to this one before and really enjoyed it. This time I was, meh.
The Zutons
3/5
It was enjoyable. But not sure I see 1001 material here.
Christina Aguilera
3/5
I enjoyed the listen. Just not sure what made it 1001 worthy.
Bill Evans Trio
5/5
I saw something that said this might be the best live jazz recording. This could actually be the best live recording. Or best jazz recording. Or just possibly best recording.
Solomon Burke
3/5
Nice listen. Don’t think it will stick to me.
Ozomatli
2/5
Don’t do it for me. Didn’t really love any element of the fusion that was being attempted. Seemed more all over the place as opposed to a unified vision.
Elton John
5/5
Usually an artist I listen to greatest hits of. Also has always been in later career in my memory and a bit of a caricature of an artist for me. I loved hearing a full album when he would have been at the height of a serious artist.
Rocket From The Crypt
4/5
I love that this record made the list. Often overlooked band.
Miles Davis
5/5
Masterful.
Brian Eno
4/5
Definitely an artist who is growing on me through this journey.
Def Leppard
4/5
This is the type of music is fully rejected as a teen in the 90s. Now so many years later I can see why this was at one point in time so massive. I will never be a massive fan but I can appreciate it more now.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
Another I will put as enjoyable but not sure it’s 1001 material.
Leftfield
2/5
Not my thing.
Elvis Costello
4/5
No one writes or sings like Elvis Costello.
Isaac Hayes
5/5
I was skeptical about this. I was wrong. There were some compositions that I would have been happy if they never ended.
Gram Parsons
3/5
I know this is an important record in the evolution of music I very much enjoy listening to today. Unfortunately this still carries too much country for me to really enjoy.
Dolly Parton
3/5
Far too country for me. But definitely three amazing talents. Just not my sound.
Ride
3/5
Shoegaze I think I should love it all as some of my favourite records are in the genre. I just haven’t been able to get deep into rise.
Germs
4/5
So many punk acts burned brightly for a record and then were gone. I hadn’t heard this before but really enjoyed.
GZA
5/5
This is the kind of record I really like this journey for. I had heard it on the RS500 and remembered it left a positive impression. This time is sat down with big speakers and the lyrics and listened to it with my full attention. Great record. Lyrically, musically and the way it’s constructed. Will it be one I listening to a lot, no. But I am really glad I got to experience it in its full glory.
Small Faces
4/5
This is one I am familiar with as it’s among my father in law’s favourites. Very interesting concept album for the time. Some classic Small Faces tunes.
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
Excellent. Second listed of this record. Got way more out of it this time around.
The Associates
3/5
Don’t do it for me.
Soft Cell
3/5
Didn’t grab me.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
These songs give me the feel of ones that have been Spotified. Short, quick to a hook and then on to the next.
He’s a very charismatic singer and it’s clear why his music lives on.
The Yardbirds
4/5
First Yardbirds album for me. I somehow knew a bunch about the band but not their actual music. Really enjoyed this. Lots of interest going on throughout the record.
CHVRCHES
3/5
Not for me.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
4/5
Enjoyed this. Wonderful concept executed flawlessly
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Nick Cave is always a captivating artist.
Steve Winwood
2/5
This is the kind of stuff I grew up listening to in the back of my parents station wagon. That’s not a good thing.
Duke Ellington
4/5
Lovely.
Louis Prima
4/5
That was so fun.
Elis Regina
3/5
Glad to have heard this. Not my thing but I enjoyed it enough.
Air
4/5
The first time I listened to this was on another of these long greatest album lists. I remember being shocked at how good it was. That feeling still remains.
The Cure
4/5
The cure has been growing on me this journey.
Yes
3/5
Enjoyed it enough.
Pixies
4/5
The Pixies were so good the first time around.
John Coltrane
4/5
Love these style records. I’ve been playing more jazz in general but never sit down and throw on a full record. I think after I finish this full list I might find a best of jazz list as my next project.
Joni Mitchell
5/5
I had actually listened to this a few days before as I found a copy of $11 of on original pressing. Jacket was a mess up the record pristine. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to her on proper sound system before instead just on my iPhone. So lovely to hear in a full some way.
This is a great record. Highly recommend.
PJ Harvey
5/5
I didn’t listen to PJ Harvey enough at the time. I’ve been making up for that in the last couple of years. Lots of different and interesting things going on in her music. Never boring.
Skepta
3/5
Didn’t do much for me.
The Allman Brothers Band
3/5
Good.
Elastica
4/5
I listen to this record a lot. However I will admit not sure it’s 1001 material for me.
TLC
4/5
Always on these long lists. I’ve listened to it at least twice while doing these. Not my style and Waterfalls still traumatizes me from when it first came out and was everywhere. But it is a worthy record of being on this list.
Sleater-Kinney
5/5
An all time favourite of mine.
The Stranglers
3/5
Good enough.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
Not sure how i missed this group as I am generally a fan of most things Damon Albarn does. I really enjoyed it. But it does land in my category of really enjoyed but not sure a top 1000.
Nick Drake
4/5
I love the way this was recorded. Two short late night sessions without big production. Leaves a lot of haunting space in the songs.
The Mars Volta
4/5
Somehow never really listened to them. This was really good. I’m giving it a four, but I have a feeling on multiple listens it could rise to a five.
Shuggie Otis
2/5
Not really my thing.
The Police
4/5
The Police are growing on me. I found Sting annoying when I was a teenager so I don’t think I ever really gave the music a fair shot. So it was always a band I knew from the greatest hits that you would hear on radio.
Turns out the music is actually quite good.
James Brown
5/5
Lots of things say they are the best live album. This might be.
TV On The Radio
3/5
Enjoyed that.
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
3/5
It was fine.
Peter Frampton
3/5
Better than I feared. I always pictured him as a cheesy singer. It was better than that.
Moby
3/5
I recognized more than I thought.
Pixies
5/5
I love when a record can capture energy like this. Of course I’m an alt rock guy who was a teen in the 90s so I’ve listened to this record a million times and I’ll listen to it a million more.
Stevie Wonder
2/5
I’ve enjoyed this classic Stevie Wonder period in general. However, my last.fm tells me I’ve listened to this one before and I have zero recollection. This listening hasn’t changed that. It didn’t leave much of an impression. I feel it should have as I’ve really enjoyed other records from this period, but for some reason it didn’t.
Joanna Newsom
4/5
That was an interesting listen. I wish there was more on this last that were there because they were doing something others aren’t. I get that there will need to be those landmark albums that paved the way for music. However, I find these ones often times more interesting.
I enjoyed the different style and approach.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
I find the environment I listen to these can really matter for my experience. This one was unexpectedly perfect from that perspective. I listened to this while walking from hotel to the US Capital while on vacation. It was great so walking and strolling.
I’ve hear this one before on another long list challenge. Great song choices. Great performances. All around wonderful record.
Gary Numan
3/5
I haven’t listened to much other than cars. This was a nice listen but won’t be rushing back for more.
Devendra Banhart
4/5
This is the first time in awhile that I have added an artist to my following based on the first listen to a record from this list. I will be return to more of his stuff.
Nirvana
5/5
It’s Nevermind. It’s awesome.
The Beau Brummels
3/5
Had no idea this is what they sounded like. I enjoyed it enough.
Elliott Smith
4/5
This is one a I have in regular rotation. I love the flow and mood of this record. Kinda chill but not at all boring.
Nico
3/5
Nothing really grabbed me.
The Beta Band
3/5
I enjoy this record. Not my favourite but I enjoy.
Bon Jovi
2/5
There are some records that I don’t think I am capable of giving a totally fair shot to. This is one of those. The music I listened to as a teen killed the hair metal category and this is one of those hair metal albums that seem like cheesy music to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I will enjoy when the hits come on at a party or bar. So context matters. But all in all I struggle with the music as like I’ve said above it all feels a little excessive and put on.
George Harrison
4/5
I’ve heard this on a previous list. This time I really liked the Apple Jam section of the record. I played that portion loud on big speakers. The rest of the album was also pretty solid.
Sex Pistols
4/5
I wish I could go back in time and hear this one again for the first time. It’s one that’s always been around in my listening world. By now it seems a little tired but I think that’s my listening experience of it over the years.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
This was a record from my youth. I know this one inside out at backwards.
For me this is a sum is greater than its parts type record. I think it all comes together in such a great way. It takes you on a journey through different sounds and stories.
Funny I don’t really listen to anything from them that came after this. But for this moment I thought they were amazing.
Metallica
4/5
I really need to give them more of a chance.
Neil Young
4/5
Enjoyed.
Lambchop
3/5
Enjoyed it. But nothing stood out as 1000 to hear before die worthy.
The Smiths
3/5
Good
Fairport Convention
3/5
Second time listening to this. There is something there. I can see why it’s on this list. Not my favourite but I get it.
Les Rythmes Digitales
2/5
Not for me. I can see how it would be a lot of fun out with friends and drinking at a club. Unfortunately that’s never translated into great music for me.
I tried to see if I could focus on various aspects of the record but that didn’t work either. I tried focusing on the music like an instrumental piece but it didn’t get me hooked. Nor did it lyrically.
Annoyingly despite it not being something I will listen to again I had some of the songs stuck in my head as they were so simple and repetitive.
Missy Elliott
4/5
Not my style and unlikely I’ll listen to it again. Having said that I enjoyed this listen. A lot going on and it takes you on a journey.
The Vines
3/5
I missed this phase of music as I was focused on school, work, life. I’m sure I would have loved it more if I had been actively listening at that time.
I found it a good record but didn’t blow me away.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Nick Cave I really began to listen to later in my listening journey. I am so happy I gave him a chance. His records are all encompassing. I find they really benefit from listening on big speakers as opposed to other iPhone output devices.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
I was looking forward to this when I saw it on the list. They have always been one of those bands Inlet play when they come on but never listen to record. I’m glad I have now. There is another record on the list as well. Looking forward to it.
Laibach
3/5
Enjoyed this. It was surprising. I assumed when I read descriptions of it I wouldn’t enjoy. But it had an interesting sound.
Holger Czukay
4/5
This is one of those that reminds me of why I am doing this.
Never heard of it before. Never will listen to it again, but glad I have this once.
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
4/5
Again a classic hip hop record impresses me. I loved the delivery half spoken style.
Madonna
3/5
Mixed reaction to this one. I wasn’t looking forward to it when it popped up. However the first bunch of songs I thought were quite good. Unfortunately by the time I hit Nobody’s Perfect the electronically manipulated voice had worn me down and it lost me from that point forward.
3/5
Couldn’t find this specific record.
Muddy Waters
4/5
Good listen a clearly a master.
Rush
4/5
Another band that has been growing on me as I’ve done these long lists.
Paul Simon
4/5
This is in the category of really good album but not sure 1001 worthy. Thought the song writing was solid and musicality enjoyable. Just didn’t see it pushing the needle or being a particularly unique record in its genre.
Finley Quaye
2/5
Not for me. I’m sure it’s for others. Just not me.
Jazmine Sullivan
5/5
This was a surprise gem. Judging a book by its cover I was not looking forward to it. Now that I’ve listened it’s unlikely I will ever listen to it again. But I’m really glad I listened to it.
She has a powerful message and a powerful delivery. I love the device of different peoples tales tying in between songs.
Really a great record to give a listen to (even if it’s the only time you end up listening to it).
Ms. Dynamite
2/5
So two female hip hop musicians I was unaware of before this list back to back. The first blew me away. This one left me cold.
I think part of it is that I don’t know the more modern genre very well so it’s not always evident to me what makes a record stand out.
Roxy Music
3/5
Doesn’t do much for me.
Fiona Apple
5/5
Pushing the envelope with this one. Really enjoy it.
Radiohead
5/5
Another case of I’ve listened before but never on a proper full size sound system. An album that was meh came to life with the full size setup. Very good record need to listen to it a few more times this way to truly get all I can from it.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
This is in the time period of music I missed between uni and starting work. Really enjoyable. Would have had potential to be a favourite had I really listened to it at the time
The Cars
3/5
Enjoyable
Dusty Springfield
4/5
A lot of classic songs on there.
The Thrills
3/5
Good enough.
Soundgarden
5/5
Sentimental favourite. My first concert was Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails on the tour for this album.
This record moves around stylistically but all hangs together. Musicianship and vocals all come together perfectly.
Definitely a top album.
Nirvana
5/5
Nirvana. Don’t need to say more.
The Birthday Party
4/5
Had to track this down on YouTube. You can see what Nick Cave would become. Absolutely wonderful noise.
The KLF
3/5
Had to hunt it down on YouTube to get the original version. Not my typical style but I enjoyed it enough.
The Pretty Things
3/5
Good enough.
The White Stripes
4/5
Always enjoy some white stripes.
Lupe Fiasco
2/5
Didn’t really do anything for me.
Donovan
3/5
A nice one to have heard.
Afrika Bambaataa
2/5
Didn’t do anything for me.
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
Loved it on a previous listen. This time
Less so. Still a good record.
The Stooges
4/5
Would have been amazing to see them live at that point in time.
The B-52's
4/5
No one is like them.
Tangerine Dream
4/5
One of the records that I am glad is on here as I never would have come across it. Won’t become a regular in my rotation but glad I heard it.
3/5
Didn’t do a lot for me.
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
My brother really liked this at the time and it didn’t do much for me. Still didn’t.
Lauryn Hill
4/5
It a good record.
Janis Joplin
4/5
First record from this list I got to listen to on my new speakers on my system. So actually sat and really critically listened. Enjoyed the band much more than I ever noticed before.
4/5
Enjoyed this record. I love songs with male and female voices in them.
It’s said that I think something like this wouldn’t see the light of day in current times. Rough vocals and not tightest playing all would have be autotuned and you’d lose the soul of what makes this record great.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
For some reason I don’t enjoy this. I should. But I don’t.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
I really like the way this is put together. It captures the energy of the performances.
The Beach Boys
5/5
There is a reason this is on every one of these type lists.
Steve Earle
3/5
Good enough.
Sepultura
4/5
So glad there were two Sepultura albums on here. Heavier than I usually listen to but great to get more than one exposure to them.
Queen Latifah
3/5
Enjoyed that.
Guided By Voices
5/5
I am so glad GBV is on here. Great example of lo-fi. Songs can be very catchy and simple. Love this.
Talvin Singh
4/5
When I read the description I realized I should play this through my main stereo. So glad I did and didn’t listen on a smaller device. The recording quality and complexity really benefited from the soundstage and imaging that a quality system can provide.
Sounds jumping around the soundstage little details tucked in everywhere. This made for a great listening experience even if it is not a style I typically seek out.
Won’t listen again, but so amazing that I did on this list.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I enjoyed.
Randy Newman
3/5
Didn’t do a lot for me.
The Doors
4/5
First time I truly paid attention all the way through as one listen. In really enjoyed this more than I have the individual songs as they came up before.
The Auteurs
3/5
Didn’t do much for me.
Donald Fagen
3/5
Saw it was a guy from Steely Dan so I made sure to listen to it on my proper stereo. Wonderfully recorded. Just not my thing.
Justice
2/5
I’d probably need someone who knows the genre to explain why this is a standout record. On my own I don’t know why.
Jimmy Smith
4/5
Enjoyed this one.
The Jam
3/5
Enjoyable.
a-ha
4/5
Very good record.
Suzanne Vega
3/5
First time I’ve heard more than just their singles. I’ll probably play some more records.
American Music Club
3/5
It was fine
Magazine
3/5
Fine.
Megadeth
3/5
Good enough.
John Martyn
3/5
Fine.
John Prine
4/5
Great song writing but I just struggle getting past the music.
Santana
3/5
I always struggle with Santana. I appreciate that he is a great guitarist, but the music just doesn’t excite me.
3/5
I need to listen to this again. I just listened through my phone which was probably not doing it justice. Will give it another go on big speakers one day.
Pixies
5/5
Pixies at their finest. Variety of sounds and a lot to keep you interested.
Doves
3/5
Another one in the category of I should like them more than I do. No reason why I don’t love them. Just sort of never got into them.
The Charlatans
4/5
Good record. Probably one of my favourites from the Brit scene at the time.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
I feel I should like this more than I do.
D'Angelo
2/5
This is the style I just don’t like. There are many styles I can identify something that I find interesting or exciting even if it’s just one part of it. This neo soul / 90s 00s r&b just actively makes me not like it.
I am sure this is a good record for the genre. But I just can’t get on board.
Elvis Presley
4/5
I enjoyed this one. I also enjoyed the Spotify autoplay that came on afterwards.
The Monkees
3/5
I was really excited to hear this for some unknown reason. Was pretty indifferent until Zilch that and the next two upped my interest.
Joy Division
3/5
I enjoyed it more than I have previous listens.
Boston
3/5
It was fine.
The Magnetic Fields
5/5
It’s a long one but a great one. Lots of gems in the mix. And of course at that length a lot of not gems. But even those are often interesting.
Bad Company
3/5
Ok
Arrested Development
5/5
Very much enjoyed this. I was too much of an alt rock guy when this came out to appreciate it. Which age I can see it as a great record.
Jane's Addiction
5/5
Exceptional. Album moves though various sounds along the way.
Klaxons
3/5
I’ve heard this twice on these long lists. Just hasn’t grabbed me.
Scritti Politti
3/5
Nice that there are examples of ends that’s didn’t strength longer. Anyway. Can you and bro clea round here.
Willie Nelson
3/5
Didn’t love it.
Nightmares On Wax
3/5
Didn’t do anything for me.
Meat Puppets
5/5
Lots of interesting things going on in here.
Lorde
3/5
Enjoyed it. You can see it had an influence on a lot of what is being done now.
Sheryl Crow
3/5
The singles definitely stand out on this one.
Girls Against Boys
4/5
Not sure why I’ve never really given them a listen. I enjoyed this.
Sonic Youth
5/5
This is an album I’ve loved since my teenage years. I don’t think a Sonic Youth would exist in the modern world of streaming and algorithms.
Big Star
4/5
Three great albums from this band. Never travel far without a little Big Star.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I hadn’t listened to this one previously. I can see why they then grew from here. You always hear about the stones roots in blues etc. very evident in this recording.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
I usually listen to these records at the start of my day often before the rest of my house is awake. That means I am usually listening at not high volumes, sometimes on my phone speakers, some times on headphones and sometimes on AirPods. Usually it works alright. This one I saw pop up and thought the only way to hear it properly would be on my main stereo system. So glad I waited until I could find the time to do so.
There is a lot of fun energy here. The sounds are not overly repetitive and it is very well recorded.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
It’s Jimi.
Tortoise
3/5
Enjoyed it enough.
Jane's Addiction
5/5
An all time favourite of mine. Heyday of Jane’s Addiction. Varied sounds and songs throughout. A real art project.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
I enjoyed the first part then the concept wore off after a while.
MC Solaar
3/5
Maybe if my French was better I would have enjoyed. As is did nothing for me.
Beastie Boys
5/5
This gets better with each listen.
Tom Tom Club
3/5
Interesting. Didn’t make me want to go back to it. But an interesting listen nonetheless.
Bert Jansch
4/5
Nice surprise. I knew the name but not the music.
Ministry
5/5
Arguably my favourite super heavy of all time. Great use of all elements.
The Cult
4/5
Landed on the right day for me. Really enjoyed the straight ahead louder rock. I can’t listen to a lot of The Cult but really enjoyed this. Good example of the style and nice to see on the list.
Julian Cope
3/5
Didn’t do much for me.
The Prodigy
4/5
In isolation I’ve never taken to these songs. As a whole work of art I appreciate it much more.
Hanoi Rocks
3/5
Enjoyed this. I had always heard of them because of the death of one of the members and reasons around it. Never heard before.
Eagles
4/5
Very well put together record. Unfortunately falls into a category/ age relative to when I was I a teen that put it in a lame old person’s music category. For that reason I will likely never fall in love with the record. But listening to it I can hear why it is one of the all time best selling albums. Played it properly through my full stereo and was a great sounding record. Might have been a five if I didn’t have the history with it that I do. But as it is I’ll put it as a four.
Public Enemy
5/5
Biggest thing listening to these long lists has been the appreciation of the golden age of hip hop. This solidly lands in that group.
Anita Baker
3/5
Nice album but it didn’t stir anything inside me.
Dr. Dre
5/5
Not my style but I can appreciate what is going on here.
Adele
5/5
This is in heavy rotation in my house as my wife loves it. I have to admit, I do too. Wonderful song writing great delivery.
Black Flag
4/5
Great record. Despite what my wife said when she walked into the kitchen with me playing this a 6:30am.
Iggy Pop
3/5
I always leave an Iggy Pop album slightly disappointment. I keep expecting them to be transformative but they fall just short of that. Don’t know why.
Bob Dylan
3/5
When this won the Grammy for album of the year is when I gave up on the Grammy’s. I realized it is about industry and not the audience. All these years later I enjoyed listening to it but keep my earlier assessment. Age hasn’t changed my view. It beat Ok Computer. I’m not a huge Radiohead fan, but I just don’t see how that happens.
Listening to it now it’s a fine record. Maybe multiple listens would reveal something more in it. But it’s unlikely I go back for more listening.
Fela Kuti
4/5
I was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. I loved the live aspect of this. Great energy and emotion being expressed. Listened on my proper stereo and it was well recorded with great sound.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
Enjoyable.
The Bees
4/5
Didn’t know this before. Nice surprise for me. I liked the variety of sounds and styles throughout the record.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
I have tried many times to convince myself that this is the greatest record ever made. I really like it. The soundscapes are wonderful. There is a great mood and theme throughout. Somehow I just can’t focus enough on the lyrics to get me across the line.
I’ve listened on AirPods. I’ve listened on small speakers. I’ve listened on my full stereo system. Just can’t seem to get the emotional response to put it over the top. I know that sounds strange but it’s how it hit me.
I do see how this can be a 5 for many people. Just not me.
N.W.A.
4/5
I commented on my last record how it just didn’t excite me. This one you can feel the passion from the first note through the last.
Not a genre I listen to regularly and there are a lot of reasons why. But you can’t deny the power of this album.
Killing Joke
4/5
I’ve always known of Killing Joke and its importance but haven’t spent time exploring their collection. I think I need to go and devote some time to them now.
Jane Weaver
3/5
Had no idea this existed. Enjoyed it as a first listen.
Dr. John
3/5
My second time hearing this enjoyed it more this time.
The Afghan Whigs
4/5
This is a long time staple in my listening. As a result it is hard to be fair when ranking. Having said that my best shot at fair would be a four out of five.
Parliament
5/5
This truly belongs on this list. Great vision and sounds throughout. A listen that keeps you interested and engaged.
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
I hadn’t listened to a whole record from the before. I got more and more into it as it went along. One of those bands that I know from just a song or two that were overplayed but are better when you listen to the bigger output.
Cee Lo Green
3/5
I hoped for more from this. Didn’t really grab me.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
4/5
So very much not what I listen too. I can’t comment on the lyrical content given not knowing the language. Having said that I am glad there are a few albums like this on the list. Push you into sitting down and listening to something way out of your normal listening profile.
I thought it would benefit from listening on my proper sound system. And it did. Wonderfully recorded and big sound. Very much worth a listen.
Frank Black
4/5
This one has been in my rotation for a long time. I love the pacing of the songs. I love that it goes to different places throughout.
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
Beautiful record. Well recorded.
Nine Inch Nails
5/5
This has been in my collection since the day it came out. I love the scope of it and emotion behind it. I still get transported when I play it.
Kings of Leon
3/5
Another in a list of bands I really should like but don’t do much for me.
OutKast
3/5
My second time listening to this record. First was when I listened to the Rolling Stone 500. Form my memory I enjoyed it more the first go around. There is a lot of interesting stuff on there. I just didn’t connect with it this go around.
Super Furry Animals
3/5
I should like this band more than I do. I enjoy their songs but they haven’t grabbed me as a whole.
Lenny Kravitz
3/5
Something about Lenny Kravitz has always had me enjoy a number of his singles a lot and find others completely meh. As a result I’ve only ever really been a greatest hits listener and not an album listener. This might be one of the first times I’ve listened to a whole record of his.
After listening I would say that same sense continues. Liked a bunch of it. Found a bunch just kind of there for me. I think I’ll give an another album or two a listen to round out my Lenny experience.
Pearl Jam
5/5
In fairness this is an all time favourite of mine. I have listened to this too many times to count. I’ve owned it on tape. I’ve owned it on CD. I own it on vinyl.
I think it was an early record in my life that thought me about passion and emotion in music. I probably use this as a subconscious benchmark against which I measure all other record’s abilities to portray emotion.
Dire Straits
5/5
It has to be one of the strongest groups of songs to start an album that there is. The musician ship is top notch. Great songwriting. Well recorded. What more can you want?
New York Dolls
4/5
Very enjoyable.
XTC
3/5
Enjoyable.
Alice In Chains
5/5
Another record that I bought when I was a teenager and therefore I have listened to thousands of times and had fully imprinted in my memory. Every Alice In Chains song sounds tragic given Layne’s unfortunate end.
Dennis Wilson
3/5
Enjoyed this one. Deserves another listen.
LTJ Bukem
3/5
Didn’t do a lot for me.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
Interesting record.
Peter Gabriel
5/5
I bought new speakers this year. Nearly every list of speaker test tracks included song off of this record. So I made sure to listen on my big system. However, I had things to get done so part way through I moved to the car. Then to AirPods. Really interesting to listen to the sonic deterioration as it progressed.
This is such a well recorded album (on top of having good songs). There is space in the tracks. There is a great soundstage. You can get distracted just listening to how it’s recorded and presented.
But this is about music and that is there as well. A great run of songs. He was an artist I grew up thinking was just boring adult contemporary. Turns out I just wasn’t ready to hear it at that time. Glad I’ve come around.
Morrissey
3/5
Good record.
John Lennon
3/5
Good record.
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
I enjoyed this.
Jean-Michel Jarre
2/5
Didn’t do it for me.
50 Cent
2/5
Not really for me.
The Icarus Line
3/5
Not sure why I didn’t know about this band. I enjoyed the record but not sure what puts it in the 1001.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
Enjoyed.
Slipknot
4/5
Very good. A sound unlike others.
Blur
4/5
Song 2 was inescapable at the time. There is so much more to this record. A lot of varied material and a big step away from the traditional britpop in the earlier records.
Saint Etienne
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I thought. Funny side story. I always confused this for a Camera Obscura record. Just kinda had a look that felt that way to me. When I hit the end Spotify autoplay rolled into a Camera Obscura song.
Shivkumar Sharma
3/5
I do love having the non-English non-popular music items on this list to hear different approaches to music.
Eminem
4/5
He seems a little angry.
Harry Nilsson
3/5
Second time listening. Grew on me. If I spent more time maybe I would like it even more.
Aerosmith
3/5
Another band I should like more than I do. I enjoy listening to some of their songs but as a whole I never love Aerosmith.
Dr. Octagon
4/5
Never heard of him before. Enjoyed this one.
Roni Size
2/5
Just not for me.
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
I liked the flow and the overall feel of what was being said.
Cowboy Junkies
5/5
Really enjoyed this record. I’ll have to check out he revisited version sometime.
Radiohead
4/5
I decided that this had to be one I played on my full system and not just on my phone or AirPods. Absolutely worth it. I was a fan of early Radiohead but have sort of sat back and wondered that the big deal was with later records. Properly listening to this one was key. A lot of very interesting stuff is happening on this record. Well worth the listen.
Minor Threat
4/5
Very much enjoyed
Sonic Youth
5/5
I was in the mood for Sonic Youth. Great record.
Nas
4/5
Interesting. Not my style but I see
Why this is considered a good example.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
This lands as one of those records I am glad are on this list as they show there is more to a band than a wedding song.
Malcolm McLaren
3/5
Glad this is on the list. One I don’t think too many people these days are throwing on as a favourite listen. But well worth it in hearing the arch of music history.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
A big step away from the the rock based music which I generally listen to. I enjoy that this process pushes me into territory I would never end up in on my own. Sitting down to this and properly listening was a great experience.
fIREHOSE
4/5
So this was a first for me. I played the wrong album. I played If’n. Loved it so much I then went and played the right album. I really enjoyed my morning with fIREHOSE. I’ve often enjoyed Mike Watt’s various bands. I like the blend of band members on these records. Will give some more of their stuff a listen.
David Bowie
4/5
When I started this journey more than 1000 albums ago I didn’t really get Bowie. As time has gone on I appreciate him more and more.
Kelela
2/5
Really didn’t do anything for me. Not my usual style. When I get these I try to really critically listen to see if I can grab onto the music, the lyrics or the flow.
Possibly if I knew more about the history of this style I might see why this was included on the list. But as is it sounded just like a lot of other stuff.
Giant Sand
3/5
Another in the long list of I’m guessing this might be really interesting with more listens. Until then I can say I enjoyed moments but not consistently.
Steely Dan
3/5
Still don’t get Steely Dan. I like it for all the technical aspects but as a whole doesn’t move me.
Miles Davis
4/5
Great listen.
R.E.M.
4/5
Classic R.E.M. accessible but not too accessible. Solid songs.
Suede
4/5
Good listen.
David Holmes
2/5
I found it a little boring.
Daft Punk
4/5
The day before this I had David Holmes as the pick. For that one I commented that I found it a little boring. As a rock guy in general I put this in a broadly similar category of electronic / dj type music - I know this is probably horribly wrong for people who know the style. Well, this was very far from boring. I found my self bopping along as I was listening to it.
I probably could have done with it being a little bit shorter.
Jack White
3/5
Enjoyed this. Good Jack White sound. Not sure I see what’s 1001 worthy from it.
Beck
4/5
I really enjoy this one. I had listened to Mellow Gold when it came out. Then sort of stopped listening to Beck for a while. Recently this record showed up on my radar and it’s lead me back into Beck.
Buzzcocks
3/5
Enjoyed it.
Pantera
5/5
I’ve seen this one on the list and have been waiting for it. I liked it as a teenager but my tastes drifted away as I got into my later teen years and beyond. I probably haven’t listened to this record at all in the 2000s.
I made sure I listened to this on my main stereo system and at a good volume. First off I was struck by how well recorded and produced this record is. It’s not just slapped together. Proper isolation of instruments and soundstage that I was not expecting or remembering for this type of music.
Passion check. Emotion check. Music that makes you bop check.
Now I’m off to listen to more Pantera.
FKA twigs
4/5
I wasn’t expecting much from this. I’ve known the name but not the music. I assumed it was random modern popular-ish music. It was. But somehow I found myself enjoying this despite myself. The sound had a lot more variation in it thank think this type of music usually does.
The Smiths
3/5
Enjoyable.
Big Star
5/5
Never travel far without a little Big Star.
Common
3/5
It was fine.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Great collection of songs on this one.
Björk
4/5
Really well recorded. Lots of interesting stuff happening in the record. I wouldn’t land it in the 1001 must hear. That doesn’t take away from the record. It’s just that I feel the other Bjork entries certainly belong as they pushed music forms forward whereas this one seems a progression from those as opposed a new step. I guess I’m really saying probably one too many Bjork records on the list and the slot could have been used for something else. I think that’s the issue with a number of the more recent records (relative to edition release dates) you just don’t have enough time to judge if a cool record has enough to stay in the 1001.
Still I really enjoyed listening to this and it does well on a good sound system. Happy to have heard it.
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
I enjoy the Manic Street Preachers but never as much as I think I should. I feel I should worship them. They just don’t quite cross that threshold for some reason.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Classic Simon & Garfunkel.
Waylon Jennings
4/5
Total surprise for me. I assumed this would be straight up old country which I generally don’t enjoy. Turns out it’s outlaw country. Apparently I enjoy that. I really got into this one.
There was a lyric something to the effect of the first time the devil made me do it the second time I did it on my own. Now sure why that stuck with me but it did. I like a clever turn in lyrics.
The sound the vocals the lyrics all worked in a way I was not expecting. Reminds me to keep going into these records with as open a mind as possible.
4/5
PJ Harvey always brings interest and excitement into each record.
Cocteau Twins
3/5
I enjoy a periodic record by them. I quickly hit my limit of how much I want to listen to them. But every once in awhile it’s enjoyable.
Bonnie Raitt
3/5
Listened to this on one of the lists before. Still hasn’t done much for me.
U2
4/5
My period of listening to U2 was Joshua Tree through Achtung Baby. This is from before that time and makes me want to spend a little more time with the early records.
Kate Bush
3/5
I can never tell if I’m going to love or hate listening to Kate Bush. It changes day by day. This go around on this one was kind of a neutral experience for me.
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
First time listening to more than just the title track. I enjoyed it all the way through.
Hawkwind
3/5
Probably wasn’t the right introduction for me. I only found the longer 2007 remaster version. With that it was just too much. I think I would have done better with a single album 44 minute long intro.
Clearly they were doing something interesting and out there. This album was just too much of it for me. About 3/4 of the way through I started to think maybe this is interesting but the feeling passed.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Enjoyable.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
It’s exile.
Nanci Griffith
3/5
Better than I expected country.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
I do enjoy listening to Elvis Costello. Often it’s more a greatest hits style listening. I need to spend more time with his records.
The Band
3/5
It’s fine.
Aimee Mann
4/5
I enjoy Aimee Mann’s work and listen to a lot from her catalogue. Just not sure what pushes this into a 1001 record.
The Dandy Warhols
4/5
I’ve had this in my collection since it came out. I go hot and cold on the record. Sometimes I think it’s amazing sometimes I find it a bit draggy.
David Gray
3/5
It didn’t do much for me at the time. Still doesn’t.
The Pharcyde
3/5
Worth a listen. Not my favourite but didn’t find myself wanting to turn it off.
3/5
I usually try to find an aspect of records that are outside of my usual listening to focus on. I just couldn’t with this one. Not sure why. Wasn’t a bad record just didn’t do anything for me.
Beatles
4/5
I am guessing had I been listening to this at the time I would have put this as a five. Lots of varied sounds throughout the record. Which you don’t get a lot of with new bands. However, through the sieve of time you see that some songs on here are sort of just there. Now maybe I am being too harsh, but that’s the way I felt on this particular listen.
2Pac
3/5
Don’t do much for me.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Enjoyed this.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
I do enjoy Elvis.
3/5
Enjoyed it.
Iron Maiden
4/5
A friend brought me along to a show a couple years ago. I started to explore their catalogue at that time but that faded away. Hearing them again I realize that I really should get back on exploring their catalogue.
ABBA
4/5
One of those groups for me that I know primarily through best of’s. Like the others I’ve listened to on this list I’ve enjoyed seeing a little deeper. There is more there than the hits. And this record is packed with hits.
Slade
4/5
It hit on the right day. Not often am I in the mood for 70s British hard rock. But today I was.
Deerhunter
3/5
Enjoyed it. Not sure what puts it into 1001.
Justin Timberlake
3/5
Other than two singles I remember from back in the day didn’t leave much of an impression.
Paul Simon
4/5
One of those albums that is always in the top of these lists. I would say 2/3 of it I think is really good. A third are just fine. The recording of it is done exceptionally well and is worth a listen on your best equipment. The song Homeless always catches me but surprise at how good it sounds.
Screaming Trees
4/5
I’m a huge Mark Lanegan fan. This record you can start to hear where he would end up post the Trees.
I enjoy this but have always preferred the previous record.
Chicago
3/5
I’ve never really listened to Chicago before. It didn’t grab me.
Coldplay
3/5
I liked Yellow when it came out. Still do. The rest doesn’t do a lot for me.
Ute Lemper
3/5
I really enjoyed it for the first few songs. Then for some reason it turned boring.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Lyrically very strong. Musically stays in a narrow space.
Thelonious Monk
4/5
Very much enjoyed.
The Sugarcubes
4/5
I always forget the Björk had a career before the solo stuff. Good record.
CHIC
4/5
I had no business enjoying this as much as I did. Played on the big stereo with volume up. Just a fun listen.
Laura Nyro
3/5
Just didn’t do much for me.
Gotan Project
3/5
It was fine.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
Neil Young has so many records out that they are of inconsistent quality. When he’s on he’s on. On this one he is on.
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
Listened to this on my main system with decent volume. I actually really enjoyed it. Typically this style of music leaves me cold but this one grabbed me.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
I’ve listened to a number of his records over this and other best of lists. This is the first time I’ve felt a connection to the music. Solid record.
Nick Drake
4/5
Nick Drake shows up on my listening and on a lot Spotify playlists for me. I will say that the songs on this record are kind of a blur for me. They all sound kind of similar. Interestingly it really works as a record. The consistency of the songs brings you into a mood and atmosphere that you live in for the duration of the record.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Neil Young is always hit and miss in his records for me. This one is a hit for me. Great rock record.
Beth Orton
4/5
Stolen Car shows up on my playlists with some regularity, but I don’t think I’ve sat through the whole record before. I enjoyed it.
Paul McCartney
4/5
I’ve listened to other McCartney solo work and as a result wasn’t too excited to hear this. The stripped down nature of this one made it stand out for me. I enjoyed.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
3/5
I am nearly done this list. I am over the 1080 records listened to at this point. It is still so awesome that I can be surprised at this stage. I had no idea who Jah Wobble was and was expecting a mid 90’s rapper. Not the case.
I enjoyed the first few songs but then eventually faded on it. Still love the surprise that you come across on this journey.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Enjoyed it.
Korn
3/5
I enjoyed more than I expected.
Morrissey
3/5
It was ok.
