1001 Albums Summary

It's fine, it's old school reggae, it's Bob. Easy listening for a Sunday morning, but doesn't get me going. Got Three Little Birds though, and that will always make me think of my Dad.

I had a friend who, about 20 years ago, used to play REM's greatest hits all the time. I was not a huge fan of them back then; some of the hits aren't bad but this is my first album experience. I'm not shocked that nothing here has changed my mind on the band. It's the guys voice I find a bit annoying I suppose, and the fact I just find this music really bland. More power to the people who like this but I like a bit more meat on my musical bones. Ohh, Strange starts off a bit like a watered down Green Day song, that was the highlight of the album. I can appreciate the hits from this album; they are solid enough. There are actually a few other flashes in here that go beyond mediocre.

Where to start? I got into Green Day back in '02, when I was 19. I played the shit out of International Superhits! When American Idiot dropped I had just seen Green Day headline Leeds festival (my first festival and Green experience) so to say I was in the height of my fanboy phase is an understatement. I remember watching the American Idiot music video weeks before and no joke, every single damn one of my friends owned this album. The end of 2004 and going into 2005 was a great time in my life and this album was the soundtrack. It was everywhere I went. House parties? Gaming with friends? While I was at work? This album was on constant rotation by me and everyone I hung out with. It was huge. It was my favourite Green Day album for the longest time but I rarely listen to it now. I have listened to it so many times that I kinda ruined it for myself. It will always be a 5* album for me though. The one song I can still happily revisit is Jesus of Suburbia. That song has everything. The other highlights for me are American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Homecoming. Pretty much the whole album.

Metallica have been in my musical DNA from a very early age, thanks to my older brother. I fell in love with them hard, myself, when I was about 20. They were my gateway into metal and for the longest time they were my all time favourite band. They have since been surpassed by Coheed and Cambria, but Master of Puppets remains a top tier Metallica album for me, as well as being one of the greatest representations of metal at it's finest. I love all the songs here, with the exception of Leper Messiah. That song leaves a bit to be desired but every other song is a banger. They've all been reviewed a million times but the longer songs Orion, and the title track are the best for my money. Not to say the others are slouches. Battery may be the single greatest metal opener, alongside Angel of Death and Clenching the Fists of Dissent. My first live experience watching Metallica was Download Festival 2006. It was the 20 year anniversary of this album and they played it in it's entirety and I kid you not when I sat I had an out of body experience! I there my whole being, body and soul into that show and was lucky to make it out alive! Perfection, or close enough.

It's a fun Christmas album, but still a Christmas album. I'm not someone who listens to certain music in certain seasons, other than at Christmas of course. I knew the majority these songs, and they are Christmas classics. A really good Christmas album is still just a Christmas album. I would never have much use for it outside of the season. Due to this I can't really rate it highly, even though it does what it should really well.

I don't listen to a great deal of old school hip hop, it's basically NWA I listen to. This is fine though, I've head some Public Enemy before, and definitely Bring Da Noise, due to being a metal head. You could argue that song was the precursor of Nu Metal. I might give this another spin in the future.

I can't say I've ever listened to a Neil Young album, so going in blind here. I'm not sure I even know any of the songs on this record. It's always weird rating an album with so much history and personal connection, when you have none yourself. I love that this COULD have been hugely influential on my music taste, had I been exposed to it as a kid. This starts of nicely enough and has a bluesy/country feel that I was not expecting. I can hear some Dylan influence in here as well. I gave this a second spin immediately after first, so I guess it was pretty good.

Another classic I never got round to checking out. Of course I already know the majority of the songs. I've always loved Highway Star, and it is still the highlight of the album as far as I'm concerned. Just a really great rock album that is rightfully loved by many.

I recognise the album cover but never listened to this band before. Due to the name I was going into this hoping it would be way more Psychedelic! It was pretty good though and I'd give it another shot sometime.

Not bad sound, I guess they were pioneers of this genre? Not what I was expecting but pretty good.

I always kinda liked Maggie May. I never would have listened to this normally and neither of my parents were particularly fans. I felt I'd like this more than any of his later albums. It's nicely bluesy and country in places. A nice listen for sure.

A very pleasant listen. I obviously knew the hits but also liked things like the little orchestral interlude. Not a band I've ever has much inclination to delve further into, but this is nice.

I went in open minded, but I felt this wouldn't be my thing. It's got that 80s vibe, and I am really not a fan of 80s pop. I'll continue to spin these sort of albums to see if I can be surprised but this one didn't do it for me at all.

Yea this was nice. You can't really go wrong with all these classic 60s albums. I already knew a few songs and I'll likely revisit.

My first Elvis album experience. Not bad by any stretch, and I can see why people are such huge fans. I would've liked to listen to this with my Dad ❤

This wasn't a bad listen musically, but I am REALLY not a fan of Morrisey's vocal delivery, I find it kind of grating. It certainly effects my enjoyment of this album and brings the score down. I know I won't be revisiting this but I'm OK with that.

It took me a long time to really get around to giving Radiohead a good go. I started to delve into them just over a year ago. I've listened to all their albums, and although I have no clear favourites this is up there. I know this album will continue to grow over time, but at the moment it is a solid 4.

Now this is the weird shit I've been waiting for. Never heard of Can before but I love this type of music. It feels very ahead of it's time. I span this a couple of times today and will do so again as it was a trip. Keep this stuff coming.

Pretty middle of the road rock, or at least that's how it feels to me. It's alright.

A pretty solid album. The songs aren't quite as memorable as those on Machine Head, but still really good.

This album exactly how I expected an 80s goth pop album to sound. I'm not a fan of 80s pop for the most part and this has too much of that era in its sound. I'd be interested to hear any of their later albums, and may give the band another try at some point.

I've never heard of these guys before and had high hopes, based on the album cover alone. This was fine, but very of its time. Unfortunately the 80s aren't a time that I particularly love so it wasn't as enjoyable for me as I'd hoped.

There's a reason I don't listen to anything pre 60s. I'm sure this is great, it's just not pushing my buttons.

I've never had a problem with Jane's Addiction, however nothing I've heard has ever made me want to listen any further. This was a really nice surprise. I liked this way more than I thought I would. I will 100% be spinning this again, great stuff.

Nice, this is like the French answer to Mike Oldfield.

This album did very little for me. I can't even really remember much about it and I've only just finished it!

One of my fave Beatles albums. Its punching for their best, for me, but just falls slightly short. Still undeniably great though.

Despite it not being my thing, it had moments that I didn't mind.

My first Kinks album. It was fine but I was a bit underwhelmed, it didn't feel to have any classic songs on there.

Yea this wasn't bad I suppose. I've not listened to a full Springsteen album before. It kinda sounded how I expected it.

Nice to have a more current release chucked in the mix. Not sure how I've never heard these guys, although I am aware who they are. I'll probably give this another spin, thus is really nice and the production is really good.

I'll be honest, I got quite bored of this and couldn't finish it.

This album frustrated me a bit. I really liked parts of it, but it's all the 80s production that puts me off. I think if this album had been recorded and released 10 years earlier, I would've liked it more.

My brother is a big George Michael fan, and I don't mind the odd song. Of course I know Faith and there were a few other nice surprises in there. Considering I don't like 80s pop, pretty much in all cases, this was nice. It was bordering on a 4 if I'm honest.

This is why I am here, to discover bands and albums that I have no clue about. I went into this hoping for good things. It was fine though, nothing special on first listen.

Nice female fronted punk. Reminds me of a slightly more modern Souxsie and the Banshees

This, and Americana by The Offspring, were the first two albums I owned. I was 16 when this album came out and my brother burnt me a cassette tape of it. I have vivid memories riding the bus to college listening to this album on repeat. It was huge to me and totally suckered me in. I loved the follow up album but by like 2003 I was starting to move towards metal and punk rock. I still listen to this album from time to , and rate it highly.

Korn have always been one of those bands where I like a handful of songs, but never really fell for any of their albums. Of course this has Freak On a Leash, amongst a few other hits.

This is one that I have on vinyl, an original press that belonged to my dad ❤ I obviously had to bust it out for this. I don't have a great deal of experience with Zappa, outside of this album, but I do really dig this. It's a great listen top to bottom and that fuses jazz with prog rock at the time. Great stuff

A nice pleasant enough listen. I might revisit one day as this was alright.

I don't have too much of a problem with Robert Smith's voice, although I thought I might. This is quite a nice listen but didn't particularly enthrall me.

I found this really bland. I may be holding a prejudice against this band as The Dear Hunter are one of my favourite bands, but people always think I'm talking about this band when I mention them.

I'd heard lots of praise for this in recent years and it was pretty good. Will definitely be spinning again. Very synth heavy in places and it's almost like a post-rock album at times

This album is fine. Quite why it is in the list of 1001 greatest albums, I don't know.

I dunno, it seems like fairly uninspiring hip hop to me. If anything he sounds as bored as I felt.

A second hip hop album that pretty much underwhelmed me. It was the first genre I fell for but I guess I'm happy just listening to the hip hop I know, and not too hot on looking for something new.

Never been a huge fan of The Doors, this album is as good as any of the others I heard. A few nice songs and I can see why others like them.

I liked this. You could hear the influences this band had on many bands that came after them.

Another day, another Bowie album. Like most I can take it or leave it. It's a nice album to listen to but nothing that really makes me want to come back to it.

My Dad was a fan of all things prog, and Traffic were one of his favourites. I have a copy of this on vinyl that belonged to my Dad. I can't say I love it as much as my Dad did, but this is pretty good.

Great album. I vividly remember my sister got a CD player and this album, back in 94, for her 15th birthday. She played this album a lot and I always kinda liked it. Haven't played it in years but it's still great.

Full of bangers. This album has got to be one of the most accessible hip hop albums of all time. Great stuff.

Honestly not bad

Of course I know the hits but first time listening to an album. I love punk but generally not the classic stuff. This is better than average though and reminds me of The Dead Kennedys.

It's a classic for a reason. I'm a big fan of Dream Theater, who were in many ways just a heavier Rush. Outside of a few sings though I've never got into Rush.

This is Latin American jazz. I don't know or listen to enough Latin America jazz to distinguish if this is great or not. It's fine but I wouldn't choose to listen to this.

Dark and brooding, nice

More of the sort of alternative music that I was hoping to hear more of. This is lovely relaxing music and the sort of thing my wife likes. As expected, when listening to this she asked me who it was.

I'm not really a huge fan of Pink Floyd but I know about Syd and his history. I was interested to hear this and I'm sure I could love it more on further listens but I'm not sure I'll revisit often.

I can't say I ever choose to listen to this style of music but it's nice enough. I don't really have a point of reference as to whether this I'd exceptional or not.

I didn't realise the Mastodon cover of A Spoonful Weighs a Ton was a Flaming Lips song. This was surprisingly better than expected.

What an album! Yes there's the issue with the inaudible bass but it's Metallica at their most technical, on the cusp of world domination, when they were still pissed off. They were grieving for Cliff and they put this monster out. What I would give to be able to go back and see them on this tour.

As this someone who can't stand Gene Simmons, I have never listened to a KISS album. I went in with an open mind and this wasn't terrible. They're actually pretty cheesy and remind me of Meatloaf

This was more punk rock than 80s pop than I was expecting. Not all that bad

I'll admit, I went into this sure that I'd dislike it. I didn't love it, far from it, but it was more complex and varied than I'd thought a Police album could be.

As much as Outkast are a nostalgia hit for me, this album is too long

I remember getting this the Christmas of '97. I wasn't interested in the slightest. Angels was alright but this was Robbie from Take That, and that was what my sister listened to! Outside of the singles this feels like Robbie trying to establish himself in the Britpop scene, as here are some serious Oasis/Blur similarities here. He was a little too late to the show but this isn't bad.
