Not generally a world music fan, but the debut album by Femi Kuti is an absolute monster. A tour de force os musicianship, with Femi’s voice and sax playing leading the way. The call and response at the end of “Frustrations” between Femi’s sax and the percussion is a highlight. Loved it all the way through!
5/5 A true classic by one of the earliest supergroups. Graham Nash said that other than the tracks Neil Young contributes to the record, he did not play or sing another note.
Very solid debut from this quarter of NYC music students. Some classic songs here, with just a little bit of filler(“What’s Your Favorite Color” in particular never landed for me). But it has aged well, and the performances and production are both fantastic. The band’s next album, Time’s Up, is their masterpiece imo.

For starters…I’m a huge Lindsay Buckingham fan. I would not want to be him and have to produce the follow-up to “Rumours”, one of the biggest rock records of all time. All that being said…this album falls way short. A lot of the songs would have been interesting if they’d been on a Lindsay solo record. On the follow-up to Rumours? Not so much. I appreciate the attempt to not repeat themselves, but that ambition wasn’t supported with many strong songs. That combined with the lofty expectations for this record contributed to this record sinking like a stone. A misfire for sure.
Landmark album in a career full of great records. So many great songs, with outstanding production by Bob Rock. Rock’s focus was to polish up the band’s sound, while also tightening up the songs. He and the band accomplished both tasks with flying colors. A must hear from one of the greatest bands of all time.
Wow, what a surprise. Awesome alternative record that somehow eluded me all these years. Great stuff.
