That’s some fine steel guitar on East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, my favorite tune from the album. This was my first exposure to Steely Dan and I found it to be much jazzier than I expected, not sure why. Clearly pretty technical music though, very well done even to a layman. Decent, short album.
Solid album. I knew some of the songs but didn’t realize it was Duran Duran. The whole album feels like a concentrated drop of the ‘80s to me. My favorites were Lonely in Your Nightmare and Hungry Like the Wolf.
Excellent album. Suede is ahead of it’s time, it still sounds modern. I really liked Animal Nitrate c and The Drowners. Will definitely be returning to this band.
Not good. Was trying to review this on the weekend and accidentally reviewed the Velvet Underground as 2/5⭐️ before listening to it. I then listened to that album, since I did not want to listen to this not good one again, and it was fantastic. Which made me even more upset about accidentally rating it 2/5 and this album by Doves is the object of my ire. It’s a bad album and it should feel bad.
I liked the first half better than the second. Some good tunes in here though, and a good introduction to Nick Cave. Interesting guy with a lot of music. Will be returning.
This is a weird one. I feel like I have never really given U2 proper shrift because they were already so big by the time I learned of them that I didn’t really care, I just assumed they were good. They’re not - at least not this album. Maybe the music really is bland and generic but what I think really happened is U2 was so massively influential that so much music after them bore a resemblance. So looking back now it’s an artificial blandness, which gets a solid 3/5.

Decent album, not really my bag. I can see how this band/album was so influential in early electronica. Less canned, more actual music. I did find myself enjoying most of the basslines, especially on "La femme d'argent."

Another classic album I had never listened to. Sorta like meeting someone famous, you just hope they’re not an asshole. Well, this album is not an asshole. It’s just some classic rock n roll. I can see how this album could be a 5/5 for some folks but it just didn’t grab me that way. I was impressed with the mixing, tenderness and unexpected variety on the album.
Middle of the road. Some good songs, Everybody Hurts is a classic. Man on the Moon reminds me of a Jimmy Buffett song for some reason, which is a positive in my book.
Now that’s one funky reggae party. Had me boppin all day long at work. Prove to me that it’s not Will Ferrell on the cowbell on Turn Your Lights Down Low…
Not a bad album, it's good music, missing something though. Maybe missing drive, or maybe it was just negatively impacted by the fact I listened to it on a treadmill. Either way, I'm not driven to return besides a couple songs.
Instrumental music can be tough when I’m running, but this was better than expected. Some groovy tunes and fun bass lines. Was hoping this was Booker T as in the profession wrestler, only slightly disappointed.
I had heard a song or two, some samples and a bunch of references but never listened to a whole album. This is right up my alley, though. The social commentary here is almost 30 years old and still holds up. Lauryn Hill is a poet warrior goddess. The Newt Gingrich dunk made me laugh out loud alone in my apartment. That Chinese restaurant skit is an instant classic. Phenomenal album, will be returning.

Spinning it on vinyl (thanks, @gio-mio!). Fun album, goofy and funky. Would be 5/5 if I could include the quality of the album itself, with the sleeves and the artwork and all, but I can’t. Thems the rules.
I’m sure that jazz-wise this is really good. Even for me, someone who does not get jazz, it wasn’t bad. Some songs I liked (much) better than others. I would much rather enjoy this music live where I can see the musicians playing and get in the atmosphere, it’s just not the same a as a layman to just listen.
These guys play some good music. Ooby Dooby and I Heard it Through the Grapevine were my favorites.

Holy cannoli, now that is a rock opera. The Super Deluxe release is almost 3.5hrs long. It’s like the LOTR Extended Editions of rock opera. I enjoyed what I got to, but this album requires some dedicated time to actually get through and chew on. Cousin Kevin and Pinball Wizard stood out to me. 4/5 for now, could very well be 5/5 given more time.
Was this conceptual album about a dumb, deaf and blind kid somehow inspirational for the premise of the movie Tommy Boy?
