Safe As Milk
Captain Beefheart & His Magic BandI hate Captain Beefheart.
I hate Captain Beefheart.
Good record from a short lived band. Standard angst-rock Post Punk, but rightfully so and one of the first of its time. Standouts- Frankly Mr. Shankly, I Know It’s Over, Bigmouth Strikes Again, There Is A Light… The Queen Is Dead.
Rock N Roll Star sounds like an ode to Kurt Cobain and The Beatles almost, with the loud guitars of the early 90s but the fun pop sound of the mid 60s. Shakermaker is loosely based on a 12 bar blues and a catchy riff. The vocals on this track are fine. The song doesn’t seem to resolve very musically, or at least upon first listen to my ears. Live Forever’s composition sounds very Pop Radio oriented, especially the chorus. This song is fine, perfectly fun. Up In The Sky has lyrics that are dripping in Generation X angst. “I heard that the shine’s gone out of your life, well that’s just too bad, welcome to my world!” Noel Gallagher was likely listening to the American Grunge records that were globally popular. Supersonic is so simple yet so catchy; it makes sense why this was one of the leading singles for this record. Bring It On Down is short, sweet, and to the point. How this wasn’t one of the leading singles for Definitely Maybe blows my mind. I can’t really comment on anything else, it’s all similar in Pop fashion. Overall, this record is a very fun listen. I can hear Noel Gallagher’s angst all over this record, and it hasn’t ever been more fun. These guys definitely like Shoegaze, Sex Pistols, The Beatles, and Achtung Baby era U2. Liam Gallagher is a moron. 3.75/5
Two stars for the great lyrics. Besides that, not my thing. I enjoy some of their earlier works, this record isn’t for me.
This record doesn’t sound nearly as dated as the others under its Funk/Disco label. The horns and strings are vibrant when they need to be and Mayfield’s are calm and sweet. As I ease into the third track I build higher expectations while also really liking what I hear. I can tell this record has lots of anti-drug themes. Definitely something the early 70s needed. You hear the Lick on Give Me Your Love. Haha. Verdict: There’s nothing to complain about on this record. The vocals are great, the band sounds great, the solos are simple and effective, and the message is an important and good one. I’ll have to watch the film, this soundtrack is great! 4.5/5
It’s like if all the good parts of REM and the bad parts from Hüsker Dü mixed. Not my thing. 2/5
These guys were so much cooler than The Beatles. They were up front about their extensive drug use and love of women. They promoted fun! Dangerous fun, but still fun. This record is a good listen for a good time. 4/5
All of the songs sound similar on this album but the lyrics and storytelling really make up for it. I love Marty Robbin’s voice. Love this record! 4.5/5
Even when I was going through my PJ Harvey phase back in 2021 I still found her voice to be somewhat annoying. Not for me, I completely get the appeal though. 2/5
One of the greatest records of all time, if not the greatest. This album paved the way for so many bands, as well as creating a new sound for the 90s alternative scene to hear. This album is perfect. 1,000/5.
Phenomenal record from Eno which bridges a gap between ambient droning sounds with the rising popularity of Glam Rock. No particularly bad song on this album, however I particularly enjoyed Needles In The Camel’s Eye. Robert Fripp of King Crimson plays guitar on this record which adds to the cool factor for me as well considering that King Crimson is a great band. 4/5
Classic Beastie Boys material. Not as good as Paul’s Boutique but still an awesome record. nice Q-Tip feature - 4/5.
God were the first 2 tracks annoying on this thing.
Just like yesterday’s Carole King, this one’s first and second tracks were both boring so I turned it off. This reminds me of Harvest Moon from Neil Young in the way that the music is as still as a lake. Boring. But at least the lyrics were somewhat interesting. 2/5.
I picked this CD up in a record shop back in 2021 or so because I thought it was rare. I was wrong, but I was also left with my introduction to the amazing band, Fugazi. This is classic DC Punk, and in my opinion you’re hard pressed to find a better band from DC than Fugazi. Ian MacKaye also founded Dischord Records which was pretty cool too. 4/5.
This is my favorite of essential Jethro Tull albums. As usual, the band brings a sort of psychedelic and dreamy aspect to what people commonly associate with “bard music” with the flutes and percussion instruments. The content, lyrically and conceptually, is built off a two-faced medium. Aqualung and My God are two different concepts, one being about the character Aqualung and the other being about God. This record is a great introduction to Progressive Rock music, along with Stand Up as well as the famous Thick As A Brick. Ian Anderson is, as usual, the hardest working and most outstanding member. LISTEN ON VINYL! Spinning my copy now. 4.5/5.
Golden age Creedence and U2 got me into music as a young boy. Classic. 5/5.
I can really dig the rhythm section but the vocals were grating to be honest. I’ll give 3 stars for the rhythm section, they sound like 80s Post Punk. 3/5.
This was my first Neil Young project and I’ve gotta say I really liked it. I bought it on cassette a few weeks ago and it’s a special album. I’ve always had a deep love for Psychedelic music. This album has plenty of jamming, but you can really hear the folk/singer-songwriter influence from Neil Young. The reason why I wouldn’t give this 5 stars is because I hate Neil Young as a person. Terrible guy that made some great music. 4/5.
This was my first experience with Charles Mingus, and I’ve got to note that this is one of the most musically interesting Jazz albums I’ve ever heard. Mingus and Co. really are wonderful musicians. The starting moments on Track B are so sweet and delightful when flowing through from Track A. What genius. 4.75/5, but let’s round up, shall we?
I dislike music like this heavily.
I hate Captain Beefheart.
Shit.
As a Gen Z kid, this album does nothing for me. It’s got some good tracks (the self titled track), some great ones (Lovely Rita and A Day In The Life), and some totally dreadful ones (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, I will never think to myself that I want to hear this song ever again.) I will say that The Beatles themselves are an overrated band, though they are incredibly important. Sweet Bob Dylan cameo in the cover, 4/5.
Zeppelin sucks ass. -5/5.
Not a Doors fan
Literally one of the perfect blues albums. BB King is one of the reasons I shred the blues. 5/5.
Possibly the greatest Rush album, though I do prefer Hemispheres. 4/5.
I’m a sucker for Latin Jazz/Mambo/Samba stuff. This record really scratches that itch. It’s fun and gratifying to listen to. Cool record, literally no complaints. 5/5.
Solid British heavy metal stuff, never really loved this kind of music. I prefer stuff like Death and Sepultura. Still cool though. 3/5.
I bought this CD from Goodwill because they had 5 copies and Rolling Stone said it was good. Actually terrible. 1/5.
I’ve been waiting for an excuse to listen to this one as I liked the debut a lot. Overall, this record is a total stepup from their debut, with more fleshed out concepts and songs. Loved it! 4/5.
AHH! I love Björk! Going to go spin my vinyl copy now. 5/5.
I’ve always found Gang Starr to be more boring than the other rappers/hip hop groups out of New York. Not bad though. 3/5.
AHHH! I love Big Black! Songs About Fucking is a classic and so is the rest of their discography. 5/5.
I never quite dug Elvis Costello. 2/5, but my opinion isn’t really important
LMAO 1/5.
Ah, another Björk album! This one is wonderful too, though I never really got Pagan Poetry. 5/5.
This is one of the best albums of the 70s. Love it! 5/5.
There’s one good song on this record which is Time Of The Season, and then there’s the rest of the album. Didn’t age well. Has one classic tune, 2/5.
FUCKINGGGG SLAYYYYYERRRRR!!!!!!!!! 4/5
Classic Gangsta/G-Funk record here. Gotta say It Was A Good Day is a classic for a reason! 4/5
Fuck this band 1/5
Total shit 1/5
Huge Springsteen fan because of this album. So much to love here! 5/5
