Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
OutKast
Two solo efforts on two separate discs, this is certainly a unique album from the Outkast duo.
The Speakerboxxx disc, which is Big Boi's solo effort, is a more traditional hip-hop album with hard-hitting beats and introspective lyrics. On the other hand, The Love Below, which is Andre 3000's solo effort, is a genre-bending, experimental album that incorporates elements of funk, soul, jazz, and even classical music.
What makes Speakerboxxx/The Love Below such a remarkable album is how it showcases the contrasting styles of Big Boi and Andre 3000 while still managing to create a cohesive body of work. The album features several hit singles, including "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move," which dominated the airwaves upon its release.
Enjoyable album but a bit too long and won’t feature regularly in my rotation, except for a few of the hits which I was bumping since before.

Low
David Bowie
This album was recorded during a tumultuous period in Bowie's life when he was battling drug addiction and struggling with personal issues.
The album is split into two distinct parts, with the first half featuring mostly instrumental tracks that are moody and atmospheric, while the second half features more conventional rock songs.
One of the most striking aspects of "Low" is Bowie's use of electronic music, which was still a relatively new genre at the time. Bowie collaborated with producer Brian Eno, who had worked with him on previous albums, to create a sound that was ahead of its time. The album's use of synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronic instruments was groundbreaking and helped pave the way for the rise of electronic music in the years to come.
It’s a fantastic album and quite different compared to Bowie’s more famous works. Definitely deserves a listen in case you haven’t heard it.

Pearl
Janis Joplin
This album features a mix of original songs and covers, including Joplin's iconic rendition of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee," which became her only number one hit. The song does a good job of capturing the essence of Joplin's musical style, blending rock, blues, and country influences to create a sound that is uniquely her own.
Throughout the album, Joplin's voice plays the main character, with her raspy, soulful vocals imbuing each song with a sense of urgency. She sings about love, loss, and longing with a rawness and vulnerability that still resonates with listeners today.
The production on "Pearl" is simple, allowing Joplin's voice to take center stage. The band, which includes musicians such as keyboardist Ken Pearson and guitarist John Till, provides backing that complements Joplin's vocals without ever risking to overshadow them.
I’m not a big fan of the vocal performance and unfortunately that is the main theme of this album. Janis Joplin is renowned a great singer, but I don’t get behind the overly raspy tones.

Illinois
Sufjan Stevens
”Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens is a masterpiece of folk and indie rock. Released in 2005, the album showcases Stevens' songwriting skills, his unique and soothing vocal style, and his ability to weave complex stories into his music.
The album's 22 tracks are named after different cities and stories from Illinois, and each song explores the history, culture, and mythology of its namesake location. From the infectious pop hooks of "Chicago" to the haunting introspection of "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," Stevens takes the listener on a journey through the heartland of America, offering a unique and personal perspective on its people, places, and stories.
Stevens' arrangements are lush and intricate, featuring a wide range of instruments including banjo, trumpet, and strings. His lyrics are deeply poetic, with a rich sense of imagery and metaphor that draws the listener into each song's world. And his voice, fragile and intimate, is the perfect vessel for delivering these powerful messages.
Illinois sets apart from other albums is its emotional depth. Stevens tackles weighty topics like death, grief, and loneliness with a raw honesty that is both heartbreaking and inspiring. He doesn't shy away from the difficult aspects of life, but rather embraces them and uses them to create something beautiful.
It is an album that demands to be listened to from beginning to end, and one that rewards the listener with something new and profound with each subsequent listen. Simply an incredible experience.

Sound of Silver
LCD Soundsystem
The album opens with the title track, "Sound of Silver," which sets the tone for the rest of the record in many ways. The song is a melancholic meditation on aging and the passage of time, with James Murphy's vocals and lyrics backed by a propulsive beat and shimmering synths.
Throughout the album, Murphy's lyrics are both introspective and observational, tackling big themes like love, aging, and the meaning of life with wit and intelligence.
The band's ability to blend danceable beats with thoughtful lyrics and complex arrangements is impressive, but the result is an album that, whilst instrumentally intruiging, falls short due to the mostly odd vocal delivery from Murphy. It takes away more than it gives and leaves me wanting to hear more of the instrumentals than the actual vocals and lyrics.

The Real Thing
Faith No More
Released in 1989, this album blends heavy metal, funk, and hip-hop into a unique sound that is both aggressive and melodic.
The album opens with the track "From Out of Nowhere," which features driving guitars, powerful drums, and lead singer Mike Patton's unique vocal style. The album's most well-known track, "Epic," follows, with its iconic bassline and catchy chorus that has become a little bit of a staple of '90s rock.
The song ”Falling to Pieces” is a perfect example of the band's ability to mix genres and create something entirely new and exciting.
Its unique sound and genre-defying approach makes it a very fun listen and I recommend it for anyone interested in the history of alternative music.

The Marshall Mathers LP
Eminem
This album stands out with it’s aggressive delivery and controversial subject matter. The album's lead single, "The Real Slim Shady", is an instant hit and showcased Eminem's ability to blend humor with social commentary. Other notable tracks on the album include "Kim", "Stan", and "Criminal", all of which showcase Eminem's incredible wordplay and storytelling abilities as well as stretching the boundries of lyrical content.
One of the most striking aspects of The Marshall Mathers LP is Eminem's willingness to be brutally honest and confrontational in his lyrics. He doesn't shy away from difficult subjects such as drug addiction, domestic violence, and mental illness. This honesty and vulnerability, combined with his unique flow and lyrical dexterity, make for an incredibly powerful listening experience.
It's worth noting that some of the lyrics on this album are controversial and may not be suitable for all listeners. Eminem uses explicit language and deals with taboo subjects such as violence and homophobia. However, this is an integral part of the album's appeal, as it reflects Eminem's unapologetic and uncompromising approach to his art.
It's an album that pushed the boundaries of the genre and solidified Eminem's place as one of the most talented and influential rappers of all time.

Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut album is an explosive and politically charged piece of work. Released in 1992, this album immediately made a huge impact on the music world and solidified the band's place as one of the most influential groups of their time.
From the explosive opener "Bombtrack," the listener is thrust into a world of furious guitars, thundering drums, and Zach de la Rocha's powerful vocals. The band's signature sound is a unique blend of heavy metal, punk rock, and hip-hop, which they use to great effect to deliver their uncompromising political message.
Rage Against the Machine tackles issues such as police brutality, government corruption, and corporate greed. Tracks like "Killing in the Name" and "Bullet in the Head" are particularly powerful, with de la Rocha's vocal delivery and lyrics doing a good job by aggresively calling out the injustices of the system and demanding change.
It’s not just de la Rocha who makes this album what it is. Tom Morello's guitar work is impressive, as he uses a variety of innovative techniques to create sounds that are unlike anything else in rock music. The rhythm section of Tim Commerford on bass and Brad Wilk on drums is tight and powerful, providing a solid foundation for the band's explosive sound.
The album is a powerful statement of political defiance that still resonates today, and a testament to the band's talent and creativity.

If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears
The Mamas & The Papas
Released in 1966, the album showcases the group's unique harmonies and eclectic musical style, blending elements of folk, rock, and pop to create a sound that is very catchy.
The album opens with "Monday, Monday," the band's breakthrough hit also serves as one of my favorites on the entire thing. The song's bright melodies and intricate harmonies immediately set the tone for the rest of the album, which features a mix of upbeat tracks like "Got a Feelin'" and "Straight Shooter" alongside more contemplative tunes like "California Dreamin'" and "Go Where You Wanna Go."
The album also features covers of two classic folk songs: "The In Crowd" and "Do You Wanna Dance?" The band's interpretations of these songs add their own unique twist.
Overall this is a decent record and a very solid debut. Their blend of folk, rock, and pop creates a unique sound that feels nostalgic, and their intricate vocal harmonies add a layer of complexity to their music that is very enjoyable.

Rocks
Aerosmith
Rocks is a gritty and powerful record that showcases the band's musicianship and songwriting prowess. Released in 1976, the album features a raw and unpolished sound that captures the band's bluesy, hard-rocking style.
One of the highlights of the album is the ballad "Home Tonight," which showcases Tyler's soulful singing and the band's ability to deliver a powerful, emotional performance. Another standout track is "Nobody's Fault," a heavy, riff-driven song that features some of Perry's most inventive guitar playing.
Rocks is definitely aclassic album that has stood the test of time and, whilst it’s nothing super special, does it’s job of delivering a good rock experience.

”Sheer Heart Attack" is the third studio album by the legendary British rock band Queen, released in 1974.
The album opens with the upbeat and infectious "Brighton Rock," which features Brian May's iconic guitar solo. This track is followed by the hard-hitting "Killer Queen," which became one of Queen's biggest hits and remains a staple of classic rock radio.
Other standout tracks on the album include the hard-rocking "Stone Cold Crazy," which features frenzied guitar work and pounding drums, as well as the anthemic "Now I'm Here," which boasts a memorable guitar riff and Freddie Mercury's powerful vocals.
One thing that Queen have going for them on this album is the variety of musical styles on display. From the glam-rock of "Killer Queen" to the hard-rock of "Stone Cold Crazy" and the theatrical balladry of "Lily of the Valley," Queen proves that they can excel in many genres. The album does features some of Queen's most experimental work, including the avant-garde "Flick of the Wrist" and the progressive rock epic "In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited." These tracks showcase the band's willingness to push boundaries and explore new sounds, something that would actually become a hallmark of their later work.

Straight Outta Compton
N.W.A.
The album's title track, "Straight Outta Compton," drops like a bomb with its gritty lyrics and driving beat. The song was a response to the police brutality and racial injustice that the group experienced in their hometown of Compton, California.
Other standout tracks on the album include "F*** tha Police," a scathing critique of police brutality and racial profiling that remains relevant to this day, and "Gangsta Gangsta," which celebrates the gangsta lifestyle that was prevalent in Compton at the time.
In addition to its hard-hitting lyrics, "Straight Outta Compton" also showcased the production skills of Dr. Dre, who of course went on to become one of the most successful producers in hip-hop history. The album's production is characterized by its heavy use of samples, hard-hitting beats, and minimalist instrumentation.
Despite the controversy surrounding the album's explicit lyrics and subject matter, it has became a cultural touchstone for a whole generation of rap fans. Its influence can be seen in the work of countless hip-hop artists who followed in N.W.A.'s footsteps, including Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem.
It’s a landmark album in the history of hip-hop with it’s raw energy and innovative production. One of the greatest rap releases of all time.

Done By The Forces Of Nature
Jungle Brothers
This album is a good blend of traditional hip-hop with an Afrocentric approach. It contains a mix of funky beats, jazz samples, and conscious lyrics. Each song is unique and showcases the Jungle Brothers' innovative approach to music.
Standout tracks from the album include "What 'U' Waitin' 4?" and "Doin' Our Own Dang," which feature guest appearances from Q-Tip and De La Soul, respectively.
One of the album's interesting points is its use of live instrumentation. The Jungle Brothers incorporate a variety of instruments, including drums, bass, and horns, which give the album a warm and organic feel. This is especially evident in the final track, "Good Newz Comin'," which features a live jazz band.
Done by the forces of nature is more than just an album; it's a cultural artifact. It embodies the spirit of the ”golden age” of hip-hop and represents a time when the genre was about positivity and empowerment.
Whilst I really like the message and the impact of this album, the production sometimes fall a bit flat despite it’s intruiging elements.

Metallica
This album features a live concert performance by Metallica, accompanied by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
The album begins with the powerful track "The Ecstasy of Gold," which sets the stage for an epic journey through Metallica's music, arranged in a symphonic style. The album features many of the band's greatest hits, including "Master of Puppets," "Enter Sandman," and "Nothing Else Matters," all of which are given a fresh new sound with the addition of the symphony.
The performance of Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra is truly special. The two entities merge perfectly, creating a cohesive and powerful sound that is unlike anything else. The symphony adds an extra layer of depth and emotion to the music, elevating it to different heights.
One of the best examples of how well these groups mix on the album is "One," which features a hauntingly beautiful introduction by the orchestra before launching into the familiar heavy metal riffs of the song. The addition of the symphony creates a chilling experience that leaves you feeling pretty wowed.
”S&M" is a very special album that showcases the incredible talent of Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The combination of heavy metal and classical music is truly unique, and the result is a powerful and hard-to-forget listening experience.

Celebrity Skin
Hole
This album marked a departure from Hole’s earlier grunge sound towards a more pop-oriented and polished style.
The only enjoyable aspect of "Celebrity Skin" is the production, which was helmed by Michael Beinhorn and mixed by Scott Litt. The album is filled with glossy guitar riffs and catchy hooks that grab your attention from time to time. The songs are well arranged with layered instrumentation but the vocal performance from Courtney Love ruin a lot of the experience. A good example of this is the album's title track, "Celebrity Skin," a standout hit from the album but Courtney Love's trademark snarl over the punchy guitar riff just puts you completely off.
With this album the band unfortunately abandoned their roots in grunge and whilst the album's production save it slightly, it’s not enough to avoid a 1 star here.

The Velvet Underground
Released in 1969, this album is a collection of eleven songs that explore themes of drug use, sexuality, and urban life. The band's sound is a fusion of rock, experimental music, and avant-garde elements, creating a unique listening experience.
The album features many memorable tracks. "Sunday Morning," is a dreamy and melodic tune. "I'm Waiting for the Man" is a gritty and raw song that portrays the seedy underbelly of New York City. "Heroin" is a haunting and intense track that vividly describes the experience of shooting up. "Pale Blue Eyes" is a beautiful ballad about love and regret that showcases Lou Reed's songwriting prowess.
One of the most notable aspects of the album is the use of unconventional instrumentation. John Cale's viola adds an eerie and experimental element to the songs, while Reed's guitar work is both gritty and melodic. The rhythm section of Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison provides a solid foundation for the music, while also adding their own unique touches.
The Velvet Underground's self-titled album is a gem of rock and roll.

One of the standout features of this album is the haunting vocals of lead singer Beth Gibbons. Her voice is melancholic and emotive, perfectly complementing the dark and brooding musical arrangements. Songs like "Glory Box" and "Roads" showcase Gibbons' powerful and haunting voice, making for a truly unforgettable listening experience.
The album's production is also noteworthy, with its use of sampling and electronic instrumentation. The songs are built around looped samples, creating a hypnotic and mesmerizing effect. Tracks like "Sour Times" and "Strangers" showcase the group's innovative use of sampling, with sounds ranging from old jazz records to hip-hop beats.

Time Out Of Mind
Bob Dylan
This album marked a return to form for Dylan after a few lackluster releases in the previous decade, where he returns to showing his quality songwriting and performing skills.
One of the most striking features of "Time Out of Mind" is its raw and gritty sound, which is a departure from the more polished production values of Dylan's earlier work. The album was recorded with a small group of musicians playing live in the studio, and the result is an intimate and atmospheric sound that perfectly complements Dylan's songwriting.
Lyrically, the album is a meditation on mortality and the passage of time, with Dylan exploring themes of loss, regret, and redemption.
One of the most notable things about "Time Out of Mind" is how Dylan blends different genres and influences. The album draws on blues, rock, country, and folk traditions, but it never feels like a pastiche or a tribute. Instead, Dylan tries makes each song his own, infusing it with his unique voice and vision. Sometimes this becomes tiresome on the album, but it’s still undeniably Bob Dylan’s sound.
"Time Out of Mind" is a testament to Dylan's enduring talent and creativity. I think it's an album that rewards repeated listening, revealing new layers of meaning with each play.
It’s close to a 4 but doesn’t quite reach it.

MTV Unplugged In New York
Nirvana
Recorded just months before Kurt Cobain's tragic death, this stripped-down and acoustic performance captures the band in a moment of intimacy and introspection.
The album features a mix of Nirvana's biggest hits and lesser-known tracks, all reimagined in a more intimate and acoustic setting. From the rendition of "Something in the Way" to the haunting "Pennyroyal Tea" and the heartbreaking "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," each track on this album is delivered with emotion but feels more watered down compared to the actual album versions.
MTV Unplugged in New York is where Nirvana transition from their signature grunge sound to a more stripped-down acoustic sound. The arrangements are simple and whilst it’s allowing the raw emotion of the lyrics to shine through, it leads to a lot of the performances to fall slightly flat.
Saying that this album is not without some highlights, with the most unforgettable moment being Cobain's cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." The song's melancholy lyrics and Cobain's haunting vocals give the track an added layer of poignancy, especially in light of Cobain's tragic death just a few months later.
MTV Unplugged in New York is an album that showcases Nirvana at their most vulnerable and introspective. However the tuned down renditions leads to a lot of tracks losing their identity.

american dream
LCD Soundsystem
This album showcases the band's signature blend of indie rock, dance punk, and electronic music, with frontman James Murphy's voice and lyrics taking a little more of a back role compared to Sound of Silver (which I reviewed earlier).
The album is filled with dark and introspective tracks like "How Do You Sleep?" and "Tonite." Murphy's lyrics are biting and witty, and he captures the angst and uncertainty of modern life with precision. Also the opening track "American Dream," is a moody and introspective reflection on the fleeting nature of the titular dream.
Despite the heavy subject matter, "American Dream" is also a more enjoyable album to listen to. The band's danceable beats and catchy hooks keep the album from feeling too heavy or depressing, and songs like "Call the Police" and "Emotional Haircut" sure got me moving whilst I was listening.
Overall, "American Dream" is an album that manages to be both deeply thought-provoking and incredibly fun to listen to.

Also ”A Design for Life," which features powerful lyrics about the struggles of working-class life and the desire for a better future.
"Everything Must Go" is a mature and introspective album that showcases the Manic Street Preachers' growth as musicians and songwriters. It's also an album that resonates with many on a deep emotional level.

Live 1966 (The Royal Albert Hall Concert)
Bob Dylan
This album is a stunning representation of one of the most controversial and pivotal moments in Dylan's career. Recorded on May 17, 1966, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, this album captures Dylan's electric performance, which sparked outrage among his fans, and marked a significant departure from his earlier acoustic folk sound.
The album opens with "She Belongs to Me," showcasing Dylan's signature voice and poetic lyrics. The electric guitar and drums add a new dimension to the music, creating a raw and edgy sound that was unlike anything Dylan had done before. The album also includes other classic tracks like "Visions of Johanna," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," and "Ballad of a Thin Man," each one performed with intense energy and passion. The downside of the album being the overusage of harmonica combined with Dylan’s at times whiny vocals create quite an unpleasant listening experience throughout the first half of the album.
The album definitely has its flaws. The sound quality is not always consistent, and some of the songs are marred by distortion and feedback, however it captures a crucial moment in Dylan's career, showcasing his transition from folk icon to rock superstar, and providing a window into the cultural and social changes taking place in the 1960s.
Almost closer to a 1 than a 3 this one but the second half saves it from hitting the lowest score.

Homework
Daft Punk
The debut album by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, is a groundbreaking album that redefined the landscape of dance music in the late 1990s. Released in 1997, Homework is an essential record in the canon of electronic dance music, as it encapsulates the raw energy, experimentalism, and playful spirit of the genre's formative years.
One of the standout tracks on Homework is "Around the World," a catchy and hypnotic anthem that features a repetitive vocal hook that is impossible to get out of your head. The track's mesmerizing bassline, robotic synth melodies, and playful use of samples create a fun and dynamic atmosphere that is emblematic of Daft Punk's style. Another highlight is "Da Funk," a gritty and funky track that features a distorted guitar riff, a driving beat, and a catchy melody that builds to an explosive climax.
Throughout the album, Daft Punk displays a command of different electronic music genres, from the acid house of "Rollin' & Scratchin'" to the ambient textures of "Nightvision" to the Detroit techno influences of "Alive." Yet, despite the varied styles and sounds on display, Homework remains a cohesive and consistent record that flows well from beginning to end.
Daft Punk's innovative production techniques, infectious rhythms, and playful approach to music-making shine on this album, making it a very fun listen.

Violent Femmes
Violent Femmes
From the opening track "Blister in the Sun," which features a acoustic guitar riff and frontman Gordon Gano's unmistakable and odd vocals. The vocal delivery is a problem to me all thr way up to the closing track "Good Feeling," which comes with some powerful energy but falls due to the vocal performance.
What makes Violent Femmes stand out from other albums of the time is the raw, unpolished nature of the recording. The songs are simple and straightforward, with minimal production and a focus on the band's dynamic interplay. The lyrics are brutally honest and relatable, covering themes of love, sex, angst, and alienation with a dark humor that is both cutting and endearing but gets pretty repetitive after a few tracks.
Overall, Violent Femmes is not an album that I will be revisiting due to the off-putting vocals and the repetitive themes. Not a good album and I can’t justify anything else but a 1 star here.

Cupid & Psyche 85
Scritti Politti
The album's title is a reference to the classical Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, and the themes of love and desire are explored throughout the album's ten tracks. The production on this album is fresh, with lush, intricate arrangements that showcase the band's technical skill.
The album's standout tracks include "Perfect Way," which was a massive hit and remains one of the band's most beloved songs. This upbeat, funky track is characterized by its catchy chorus, infectious melody, and clever lyrics. "The Word Girl" is another standout track, featuring one of the better vocal performances by lead singer Green Gartside and a driving rhythm section that propels the song forward.
Other standout tracks on the album include "Absolute," which features a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere and a good vocal performance by Gartside, and "Hypnotize," which has a hypnotic, trance-like quality. One negative about the album is how Scritti Politti sometimes fail to showcase the knack for creating innovative and unique sounds. They do the more basic stuff well though, and it’s not a bad listen.

Nevermind is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential albums in the history of rock music. It was the album that propelled Nirvana to worldwide fame, and helped to define the grunge genre that dominated rock music in the early 1990s.
The album features some of Nirvana's most iconic songs, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come As You Are", and "Lithium". These songs are instantly recognizable and have become anthems for a generation of rock fans. The album's raw, edgy sound, coupled with the emotional intensity of Kurt Cobain's lyrics, captured the mood of disaffected youth, spoke to a generation of listeners who felt marginalized and misunderstood.
What makes Nevermind so great is its perfect balance of melody, aggression, and vulnerability. The songs are catchy and accessible, yet still have an edge that sets them apart from other mainstream rock music. The album also features some interesting and unexpected musical elements, such as the use of cellos on "Something in the Way", which adds to the album's overall depth and complexity.
The production on Nevermind is also noteworthy, with Butch Vig managing to capture the raw energy and power of the band's live performances. The album's sound is simultaneously clean and polished, yet also gritty and raw, which perfectly suits the music's emotional intensity.
Nevermind is probably the greatest grunge album of all time and one of the most iconic moments in modern music history.

The Contino Sessions
Death In Vegas
One of the most interesting features of The Contino Sessions is the use of guest vocalists throughout the album. Notably, Iggy Pop appears on the track "Aisha" and delivers a powerful and raw vocal performance that complements the driving electronic beats. Similarly, Dot Allison's vocals on "Dirge" add a haunting and ethereal quality to the track.
The album's production is also a standout feature, with rich layers of sound and intricate arrangements that keep the listener engaged and intrigued throughout. The use of samples and live instrumentation creates a dynamic and diverse soundscape that is both familiar and experimental.
One of the best songs of the album is the track "Hands Around My Throat," which features a relentless drumbeat, distorted guitar riffs, and haunting synth lines. The song builds to a fever pitch before culminating in a powerful climax that is both intense and cathartic.
This album is a well-produced soundscape and definitely worth a listen.

Face to Face
The Kinks
This album marked a significant shift in The Kinks’ sound, moving away from their earlier R&B-influenced rock towards a more introspective, sophisticated style. The result is a collection of 14 tracks that showcase Ray Davies' songwriting talent and the band's musical versatility.
One of the album's best tracks is "Sunny Afternoon," which became one of The Kinks' biggest hits. The song features a unique, almost lazy melody that perfectly captures the song's themes of summer leisure and financial struggles. "Rainy Day in June" is another standout, with its haunting harmonies and lyrics about loneliness and heartbreak.
The Kinks showcase their musical versatility, experimenting with different genres and styles. "Most Exclusive Residence for Sale" features a jazzy piano riff and a dramatic chorus, while "Session Man" has a bluesy feel and features a driving rhythm section. The album ends with the epic "I'll Remember," a ballad that showcases Davies' songwriting talent and the band's ability to create complex, layered arrangements.
Overall this is a pretty good record and I recommend it for anyone who’s a fan of 60s music.

What's Going On
Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye's ”What's Going On” is a masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of time and genre. Released in 1971, the album tackles issues of social justice, war, poverty, and police brutality, making it an album that resonates with people even today.
Gaye's smooth, soulful vocals and jazzy instrumentation make the album a joy to listen to from start to finish. Songs like ”What’s Going On”, ”Mercy Mercy Me” and ”Inner City Blues” are truly powerful and showcase Gaye’s brilliant artistry.
Whilst it’s not the greatest album of all time like Rolling Stone claims, it’s certainly one of those albums that feel really special and easily fits into the debate for top 30.

It's Blitz!
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This ambitious album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs mark a significant departure from the band's earlier sound, with an increased emphasis on electronic instrumentation and dance beats.
One of the album's strengths is its ability to shift seamlessly between danceable, upbeat tracks like "Dull Life" and more introspective, emotional ballads like "Hysteric." The latter track, in particular, showcases Karen O's range as a vocalist and her ability to convey raw emotion through her singing. The Vocals from Karen are not flawless on this record but the intention is impressive.
The electronic elements on the album, provided by Nick Zinner's synthesizers and keyboards, are the biggest highlight to Yeah Yeah Yeahs' sound. It's an interesting contrast to the band's earlier, more garage rock-oriented albums and shows that they are not afraid to evolve and experiment with different styles.
"It's Blitz!" is a highly enjoyable and well-crafted album with ambitious production and vocal-work. It’s a fun listen for sure and gets pretty close to that impressive 4.

Young Americans
David Bowie
”Young Americans” marked a significant departure from Bowie's previous works, which had a more experimental and avant-garde sound. Instead, Young Americans saw Bowie exploring soul, funk, and R&B, which made for a more mainstream listening experience.
The title track, "Young Americans," is a standout song that captures the essence of the album's sound. With its infectious groove and catchy chorus, it's one that was stuck in my head for quite a while. "Fame," another hit from the album, features the distinctive guitar work of Carlos Alomar and a memorable hook.
The album also features collaborations with some of the biggest names in soul music, including Luther Vandross, who provided backing vocals on several tracks, and John Lennon, who contributed to the song "Fame." Their contributions add depth and richness to the album.
What's particularly impressive about Young Americans is how effortlessly Bowie was able to incorporate different genres into his sound. From the soulful "Win" to the disco-inspired "Somebody Up There Likes Me," Bowie proves that he was a master of musical reinvention.
This album, despite having a less unique soundscape in comparison to many of his other works, provide a fresh take on Bowie as a superstar artist and it definitely deserves it’s spot on the list. Close to a 4.

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
The Incredible String Band
This album is in a lot of ways an exercise in frustration, mainly due to the album’s lack of coherence. The songs are disjointed and seem to meander without any clear direction or purpose. The lyrics are often obscure and hard to understand, which further adds to the confusion. It's as if the band was trying to be deliberately obscure and challenging.
The album's production is often muddy and unrefined, making it difficult to appreciate the musicianship of the band members. The vocals are often off-key and grating, which was a major turn-off whilst listening to this.
The only reason I considered giving this album 2 stars is due to the unique sound that is produced, it was clearly meant to sound the way it does. Sadly that sound is not very nice to listen to.

The Slider
T. Rex
The Slider is a very good album, boasting a diverse range of tracks that showcase T. Rex's musical versatility. From the groovy, guitar-driven opener "Metal Guru" to the dreamy ballad "Spaceball Ricochet," the album is a journey through various moods and styles. The album's standout track, "Telegram Sam," is a catchy and infectious rock anthem that perfectly encapsulates T. Rex's unique sound.
One of the most impressive aspects of The Slider is its production value. The album's sound is crisp, clear, and expertly mixed, allowing Bolan's vocals and guitar work to shine. The production also showcases the band's use of studio effects and techniques, which were quite ahead of their time in 1972.
Bolan's songwriting is poetic and evocative, often drawing on imagery from mythology and folklore. His lyrics are open to interpretation, whilst can be frustrating but it's leaving ample room for the listener to find their own meaning in his words.
Overall it's a very solid 70s rock release and I like it's place on this list.

Pretenders
Pretenders
Highlighted by lead singer Chrissie Hynde, Pretenders self-titled effort is a solid album in new-wave history.
Hynde's voice is what makes this album stand out. Her delivery is confident, sultry, and at times confrontational. She has an undeniable charisma that draws you in, whether she's singing about love and heartbreak on tracks like "Brass in Pocket" and "Stop Your Sobbing," or taking on societal issues in songs like "Mystery Achievement" and "The Wait."
The music and production itself does it’s job. The band's sound is gritty, energetic, and full of attitude. The guitar riffs are catchy, and the drums and bass create a pretty nice driving rhythm. The production is clean but lacks a little polishing.
One more thing that I like about Pretenders is how diverse the music is. The album blends different styles and influences, from the punk-inspired "Up the Neck" to the reggae-influenced "Private Life." There is something for many different people to find and enjoy.

Steve McQueen
Prefab Sprout
"Steve McQueen" was a commercial success, reaching number 21 on the UK Albums Chart, and it remains one of Prefab Sprout's most beloved works.
From the opening track "Faron Young" to the closing ballad "Horsin' Around", "Steve McQueen" is a very good album that never fails to keep you invested. The album's standout track, "When Love Breaks Down", is a beautiful love song that features lead singer Paddy McAloon's warm and emotive vocals. The vocal set is indeed a very big highlight whilst listening to this.
The album's production is also very good, with a mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation that creates a unique sound. The songs are cleverly crafted and lyrically rich, with themes that range from love and heartbreak to Hollywood glamour and existentialism.
It’s a beautiful record that I heavily recommend you check out.

Isn't Anything
My Bloody Valentine
A turning point in Shoegaze history, combining elements of post-punk, dream pop, and noise rock to create a unique and mesmerizing sound. ”Isn’t Anything” show a lot of the elements that three years later would be perfected and become the band’s masterpiece in ”Loveless”.
The defining feature of "Isn't Anything" is the band's use of distortion and feedback as an instrument in itself. The layers of guitar fuzz and the swirling sonic textures create a hypnotic and otherworldly atmosphere, immersing you in a sonic cocoon that is both beautiful and unsettling. This is exemplified in "Cupid Come", a hauntingly beautiful ballad that builds to a wall of sound.
"Feed Me With Your Kiss" is another big highlight, a driving and intense track that features some of the band's most powerful guitar work. Also he album's closing track, "You Made Me Realise," featuring an extended outro that devolves into a cacophony of noise and exhilarating feedback.
The vocal sets and arrangments were not as crisp as on their later works but nothing that disrupts the quality too much. It’s My Bloody Valentine’s least celebrated album, but it deserves it’s flowers for it’s revolutionary brick-laying approach.

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
Aretha Franklin
This album is nothing but a powerhouse in soul and singing performance. This is a statement to why Aretha Franklin is regarded as maybe the best singer of all time.
Franklin's soulful vocals and emotional delivery make it an instant classic with highlights like "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,", "Dr. Feelgood," and the mega hit ”Respect”. The last being named as the greatest song of all time by the popular music magazine Rolling Stone
Franklin's incredible range and ability to convey deep emotion through her music is well accompanied by the album’s production, which was handled by Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd, two legends in the music industry. The instrumentation and arrangements are greatly crafted, and they perfectly complement Franklin's vocals, creating a rich and powerful sound.
This album is very very close to a five star rating, but falls just short due to the smaller lack of versatility on the record, it’s a fantastic listen though.

Station To Station
David Bowie
Another day another Bowie review!
This album is another product of Bowie's experimental phase, making a departure from his earlier glam rock sound.
The title track of the album, "Station to Station," is a six-minute journey through various musical landscapes, including funk, rock, and even elements of krautrock. The song features Bowie's unmistakable vocals, which are rich, soulful, and at times almost operatic in their delivery. The song does a good job at summarizing the album in some ways.
"Golden Years," the funky disco-inspired number is another highlight, and "Wild is the Wind," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Bowie's vocal range is also an impressive piece of musicianship.
Talking about musicianship, the album also features contributions from some of the most talented ”background’ musicians of the time, including Carlos Alomar on guitar and Earl Slick on lead guitar. Their performances are very good, and they add an extra layer of depth and complexity to the album's already rich sound.
Overall this is definitely one of Bowie’s absolute best albums and one that often goes under the radar.

The Number Of The Beast
Iron Maiden
Marked as the arrival of Bruce Dickinson as the band's new lead singer, and hailed as one of the most influential metal albums of all time.
The title track, "The Number of the Beast," is the most well-known song on the album, and for good reason. It features a memorable riff and Dickinson's soaring vocals, as well as lyrics that explore themes of religion, temptation, and evil. "Run to the Hills," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," and "Children of the Damned," are also tracks that showcases the band's musicianship and songwriting abilities.
Something that makes "Number of the Beast" so memorable is the way it blends heavy metal with elements of prog rock and classical music. The album features complex arrangements, intricate guitar solos, and even a spoken-word section on the track "The Prisoner." Additionally, the album's production is top-notch, with each instrument and vocal track clearly defined in the mix.
This album is an iconic piece of metal history and well deserved on the list.

Oxygène
Jean-Michel Jarre
From the opening track, "Oxygène Part I," to the final track, "Oxygène Part VI," the listener is taken on a sonic journey that mesmerizes and captivates but sometimes loses your full attention at dragged out parts of the record.
Oxygène is creater in a way in which Jarre uses electronic sounds to create a sense of atmosphere and mood. Each track is carefully crafted to evoke a specific emotion, and the use of synths, sequencers, and other electronic instruments creates a sound that is both futuristic and otherworldly. The fact that this album was released in 1976 is actually pretty insane considering how modern it sounds.
Oxygene is definitely a groundbreaking album with it’s electronic, ambient sound and whilst it drags on at times it’s still a record that i recommend for some relaxation.

The Who Sell Out
The Who
This funny looking album is a satirical take on the advertising industry and features a blend of rock, pop, and psychedelia.
The album is filled with humorous interludes, such as the mock commercials for various products like deodorant, baked beans, and hair cream, which are interspersed throughout the record. Some of the most notable songs include "I Can See for Miles," "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand," and "Tattoo."
The sound of the album is not exactly enjoyable even though it gets a little bit better as the album progresses. The use of horns, strings, and vocal harmonies on tracks like "Our Love Was" and "Sunrise" adds some depth and richness to the album.
Lyrically, The Who Sell Out is a commentary on the consumerism and commercialization of society. The album takes a satirical look at the advertising industry and the ways in which companies manipulate consumers to buy their products. The lyrics of "Odorono" and "Heinz Baked Beans" are particularly iconic to this, as they mock the idea that these products could make someone's life better. Although Baked Beans can definitely go a long way.
Whilst it’s quite a funny record, it’s not something that I would ever revisit and it’s doesn’t earn a very high score.

Live Through This
Hole
The album is, unlike a lot of ”Celebrity Skin” characterized by its raw, intense and emotional sound, with lyrics that touch on love, loss, and betrayal.
I was quite critical about Courtney Love’s vocal performance on my last Hole review and whilst it’s not amazing on this album, it’s way better surrounded by the more raw sound. Her powerful singing style are on full display throughout the record.
Kicking drums and explosive guitar work are mainstay on this record and the influences of Nirvana are clear both instrumentally and most definitely in the vocal performance.
I still have some problems with Love’s vocals even though they are a better listen on this album. The sound also fails to feel authentic and I just don’t see any point in listening to this album rather than any other 90s metal

Heroes
David Bowie
Whilst still defying genres in a way only he could, ”Heroes” is still an album that notes Bowie past his peak.
The title-track ”Heroes” is however one of Bowie’s greatest works. Instantly captivating with its haunting melodies and emotionally charged lyrics. Bowie's vocals soar with a sense of longing and defiance. The song's powerful message of love and courage echoes out and it’s very hard to not appreciate this song.
Throughout the album Bowie blends elements of rock, pop, and avant-garde music to create an accessible and classic sound. Brian Eno's influence is evident throughout the album, as he brings his experimental and ambient sensibilities to the table. The layered instrumentation and innovative use of synthesizers create a rich and immersive sound that bring an almost futuristic vibe.
It’s a bold statement in Bowie’s career but the spark from the early 70s is not quite there.

A Seat at the Table
Solange
This 2010s release is a poignant and introspective album, focusing on a sonic narrative that tackles issues of race, identity, and empowerment with grace and vulnerability.
The album flows seamlessly, with each song transitioning into the next, resulting in a cohesive and immersive experience. Solange's soulful vocals effortlessly guide us through a captivating journey of self-reflection, as she explores the complexities of her own experiences.
Whilst the songs blending together is a nice touch sonically, it does lead to the album losing it’s excitement factor at times.
The album tackles themes of black womanhood, social justice, and the quest for self-acceptance in a society that often marginalizes and silences marginalized voices. Tracks like "Cranes in the Sky" and "Don't Touch My Hair" serve as powerful anthems of resistance, highlighting the struggles faced by black women and their determination to reclaim their narratives. It’s a lyrically powerful stance from Solange as the message proves to be the album’s most important and shined upon asset.
It’s a powerful record and a good soft listen.

Go Girl Crazy
The Dictators
An unapologetic punk-rock release. The album is a high-octane blend of punk, rock 'n' roll, and garage rock, with a healthy dose of humor and attitude. The band's irreverent lyrics and charismatic performances make for an unique listening experience and whilst fun, it doesn’t exactly impress on the ear.
"Two Tub Man," an anthem about a man who can't resist the temptation of a bathtub perfectly captures The Dictators' unique blend of wit and punk rock aggression. Another standout is "Master Race Rock," an unabashed and controversial song that confronts societal issues head-on.
Handsome Dick Manitoba's vocals are filled with swagger and attitude, delivering the lyrics with a sense of urgency and always with a bit of unseriousness. The guitar work by Ross "The Boss" Funicello is raw and gritty, providing a fitting backdrop for the band's sound.
The Dictators embrace the punk ethos while also poking fun at it. They know they're not taking themselves too seriously, and that lightheartedness shines through in tracks like "Weekend" and "Back to Africa." This self-awareness adds some depth to the album, making it more than just a collection of punk anthems. However it also sacrifices quality of the actual music and turns more into a comical attraction rather a well sounding musical experience.
The album's production quality is not up to par with modern standards. The rawness and DIY aesthetic are part of its charm but the sound feels very muddy.
It’s a fun listen in a way but from a musical aspect I cannot give it a very high rating.

Licensed To Ill
Beastie Boys
The Beastie Boys defied conventions, combining rap, rock, and punk influences. This is well represented in this album, groundbreaking and entertaining.
The energetic and infectious beats, coupled with the group's clever and often humorous lyrics, make for a truly unique listening experience. Tracks like "Paul Revere" and "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" showcase the Beastie Boys' ability to blend hard-hitting rap verses with rock-infused instrumentals, creating a sound that was exciting for its time but comes off as a bit dated in today's ears.
One of the standout tracks on the album is, of course, the legendary "Fight for Your Right." Its catchy chorus and rebellious lyrics propelled the Beastie Boys into stardom and became quite an anthem. However, it's important to note that "Licensed to Ill" is more than just its hits. Tracks like "The New Style" and "Girls" demonstrate the group's lyrical dexterity and clever wordplay, while "Slow Ride" and "Time to Get Ill" showcase their ability to create infectious party anthems.
What sets "Licensed to Ill" apart from other rap albums of its time is the Beastie Boys' ability to infuse their music with a sense of humor and playfulness. They embrace their bratty personas, often toying with stereotypes and expectations, and create a sound that is simultaneously rebellious and fun.
While some may argue that the lyrics on the album can be seen as juvenile or offensive, it's important to view them in the context of the time they were released, much like other hip-hop albums from the same era. "Licensed to Ill" pushed boundaries and challenged societal norms, but it was also a product of its era, reflecting the youthful exuberance and rebellious spirit of the 1980s.
The album's sound is raw and energetic, with heavy guitars, booming drums, and samples that add depth and texture to the tracks. The production complements the group's witty and aggressive delivery, resulting in a cohesive experience. The instrumentals are not exactly top tier, but they do a good job of laying the backdrop for the rap performances.
Overall its a groundbreaking mix of hip-hop and rock that surely deserved its place on the list. Just reaches the 4.

In Utero
Nirvana
Just a year before Kurt Cobain's tragic demise, this raw and emotionally charged record serves as a profound testament to the band's artistic depth and Cobain's tortured genius.
I have been openly critical about this album on the Reddit page but I must put my pride to the side and realise the quality of this record.
The purunpolished production, courtesy of Steve Albini, captures the raw power and edginess that the band was clearly targeting for this album. Each instrument roars with unbridled fury, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously abrasive and captivating.
"In Utero" showcases Nirvana's fearless approach to songwriting. Cobain's introspective and often cryptic lyrics delve into themes of disillusionment, alienation, and existential anguish. Songs like "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Rape Me" showcase his ability to infuse deeply personal emotions into powerful and catchy melodies.
Rather than creating another commercial success like its predecessor "Nevermind," Nirvana opted for a raw and uncompromising sound. Tracks like "Milk It" and "Scentless Apprentice" exhibit the band's willingness to experiment with dissonance and noise, pushing the boundaries of alternative rock and grunge. This is something that I have learnt to appreciate about the album and whilst it’s not as crisp and perfected like ”Nevermind”, I really enjoy this album’s purpose. ”In Utero” might not be perfect but it’s distinct place as it’s own identity and sound makes it quite a listen.

James Brown Live At The Apollo
James Brown
The ”Godfather of Soul” showcases his unparalleled stage presence, dynamic energy, and undeniable talent on this live record.
The album bursts open with "I'll Go Crazy," immediately hitting you with infectious rhythms, impassioned vocals, and tight, groove-laden instrumentation. The band, including the renowned Flames, is exceptionally tight, providing the perfect backdrop for Brown's electrifying performance.
Brown's voice transitions between smooth crooning and fiery, gospel-inspired shouts, showcasing his vocal range and versatility. His ability to command the stage and captivate the audience is quite something, as he effortlessly weaves through hits like "Try Me," "Lost Someone," and "Please, Please, Please." The sheer power and emotion in his delivery are unparalleled, showing why he was regarded as one of the greatest live performers of all time.
The album's defining moment in my opinion is the extended rendition of "Lost Someone." Clocking in at over ten minutes, the song is an emotional tour de force, with Brown pouring his heart and soul into every note. His improvised interplay with the audience, the intensity of his screams, and the unrelenting groove of the band create an atmosphere that is both intimate and explosive.
This is a great example of a good live album, capturing the rawness and spontaneity of a live performance, with the audience's enthusiastic participation adding an extra layer of excitement. Brown's ability to connect with the crowd is undeniable, as the cheers, screams, and call-and-response interactions amplify the electrifying atmosphere of the Apollo Theater.
This one is a testament to Brown’s skill on the stage and I heavily recommend it to anyone looking for a good live album experience.

Can't Buy A Thrill
Steely Dan
”Can't Buy a Thrill" is not your average rock album. The intricate guitar work, jazzy piano fills, and Fagen's smooth, captivating vocals add into Steely Dan’s unique musical universe. The songs on this album are meticulously arranged, showcasing the duo's attention to detail.
The biggest highlight of the album has to be the guitar solo by Elliott Randall in the song "Reelin' in the Years,". Other tracks like "Dirty Work" and "Kings" demonstrate the band's knack for blending intricate melodies with clever, introspective lyrics.
While Steely Dan's music often carries a veneer of smoothness and accessibility, a closer examination of the lyrics reveals a darker and more cynical undercurrent. Tracks like "Midnight Cruiser" and "Only a Fool Would Say That" tackle themes of disillusionment, failed relationships, and the complexities of modern life. This juxtaposition between the breezy musical arrangements and the thought-provoking lyrics adds depth but also doesn’t exactly fit the musical sound.
Steely Dan enlisted an impressive roster of session musicians to bring their vision to life, including the legendary drummer Jim Gordon and guitarists Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias.
The album is an exercise in attention to detail and I do like it’s place on this list as a truly unique rock release.

Pet Shop Boys
Throughout this album, Pet Shop Boys weave together the themes of love, desire, isolation, and societal issues. Tracks like "Shopping" critique consumer culture, while "Heart" explores the vulnerability of romantic relationships.
One of the big highlights goes by the name of, "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" featuring the iconic Dusty Springfield. The collaboration between Pet Shop Boys and the soulful Springfield makes for a very interesting listen. Their contrasting yet complementary voices create a well crafted synergy.
Production wise, the integration of electronic and orchestral elements creates a lush soundscape that get a futuristic feel and the duo's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the songs.
”Actually” does it’s job of delivering catchy pop songs that feel very 80s so if you are in your 40s/50s looking for nostalgia, look no further than this album.

Rush
This Rush album is one that effortlessly blends complexity with accessibility. Geddy Lee's distinctive vocals, Alex Lifeson's mesmerizing guitar work, and Neil Peart's virtuosic drumming synergize very well, creating a sound that is uniquely Rush.
Neil Peart takes centre stage on this album. "Red Barchetta" is a thrilling, high-speed ride through a dystopian future, vividly painted by Peart's imaginative lyrics. "YYZ" showcases the band's technical prowess with its intricate instrumental arrangement, particularly highlighting Peart's drumming prowess in an impressive display of precision.
”Limelight" stands as an anthem for artists grappling with the pressures of fame, featuring Geddy Lee's emotive delivery and Lifeson's guitar solos. Meanwhile, "The Camera Eye" takes listeners on a sonic exploration of cityscapes, transitioning between captivating moods.
Lyrically the band switch from themes like social commentary in "Witch Hunt" to introspection in "The Camera Eye," Rush's lyrics offer a depth and introspection but argubly couldve taken a clearer path.
The highlights and musicianship on this album is too high to not give this album a 4.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Unfortunately, Neil Young’s music is not on Spotify so I had to annoyingly look this one up on Youtube.
The album is a collection of tracks that explore themes of love, loneliness, and the struggles of life. All carried out with its gritty guitar riffs and Young's signature wailing vocals.
"Down by the River." has to be the best song of the album. Clocking in at over nine minutes, this song is quite special, showcasing Young's ability to create captivating musical journeys. The extended guitar solos are mesmerizing as well.
"Cowgirl in the Sand." is another good song. This track features Young's remarkable guitar skills once again, combined with his emotionally charged vocals. The song's hypnotic rhythm and poetic lyrics create a sense of longing and introspection.
Young's collaboration with his band, Crazy Horse, is a defining element of the album. The synergy between Young and the band members is palpable, resulting in a cohesive and powerful sound throughout the record. Their raw, unpolished approach adds a well-needed sense of authenticity to the music, making it feel alive and untamed. The sound is however not perfect and couldve been mastered further to fully potentialize the record.
Something that Neil Young has going for him on this album is how well he is able to switch from rock’roll songs to more acoustic tracks quite seamlessly, showing the talents of a great artist. Close to a 4 this one.

Cyndi Lauper established herself as an icon of the '80s music scene, much thanks to this album. Close to a 4 this one.

The Beach Boys Today!
The Beach Boys
This album from The Beach Boys, released a year before their big masterpiece Pet Sounds, show a lot of the same promise and quality. This is a sonic feast for the ears.
The exploration of more introspective and introspective lyrical themes is a standout feature of the album. Songs like \"Please Let Me Wonder\" and \"She Knows Me Too Well\" delve into the complexities of love and relationships, showcasing the band's growth as songwriters. Their ability to capture genuine emotion through their music is a very special attribute of The Beach Boys. This is well shown in the deeper cuts on Beach Boys Today! that truly showcase the band's artistic prowess. Songs like \"In the Back of My Mind\" and \"When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)\" display their ability to tackle more introspective themes, reflecting on the bittersweet realities of growing up and the longing for a sense of belonging.
The production on this album is expectedly amazing, with Brian Wilson's meticulous attention to detail shining through in every track. The lush vocal harmonies, intricate instrumental arrangements, and innovative use of studio techniques create a rich sonic tapestry that elevates the songs to another level.
Whilst ”Pet Sounds” was their big masterpiece, this album is not far behind in it’s sonic tendencies.

Michael Kiwanuka
KIWANUKA is one of those special albums that sound so genre-bending that it kind of creates it’s whole own musical universe.
KIWANUKA envelops you in a warm, ethereal atmosphere. The album opens with "You Ain't The Problem," a powerful song that immediately captured my attention with its infectious groove and Kiwanuka's velvety-smooth vocals. His voice, simultaneously soothing and commanding, resonates with an authenticity that carries throughout the entire album.
One of the defining qualities of KIWANUKA is its richly layered instrumentation. The songs are filled with lush arrangements, incorporating elements of gospel, soul, and vintage rock. Tracks like "Piano Joint (This Kind of Love)" and "Hero" feature soul-stirring melodies and sweeping orchestration, reminiscent of classic Motown and Stax Records. This album sounds like a 60s record with modern crisp production quality. Kiwanuka's ability to blend genres and eras like this is very impressive. The album’s big moment is ”Cold Little Heart”, a 10-minute epic that builds gradually, fusing together layers of intricate guitar work, haunting strings, and soulful vocal performance. It's a mesmerizing one that leaves a lasting impression.
Lyrically, KIWANUKA delves into themes of identity, self-reflection, and the struggle for acceptance. Tracks like "Rolling" and "Living in Denial" address the complexities of personal growth and navigating one's place in society.
This album transcends eras and genres of music in a truly special way. KIWANUKA is one of the most underrated albums of the past decade and one that you really need to hear.

Maxinquaye
Tricky
A big record in the trip-hop scene, filled with dark, atmospheric soundscapes and raw lyrical content.
Tricky's distinctive raspy voice, paired with the ethereal vocals of Martina Topley-Bird, creates the dynamic for the album. The combination of trip-hop beats, dub elements, and the occasional splash of rock and hip-hop samples results in a unique sonic palette, clearly influenced by trip-hop greats Portishead.
The fusion of Topley-Bird’s vocals work well with the beats on the album but I wasn’t feeling Tricky’s evocative delivery, leaving me feeling quite unfufilled in the total vocal department of the record.
Tricky instead shows his skill on the production side. He blends samples, live instrumentation, and electronic elements, creating an atmospheric backdrop that complements the album's lyrical themes. The use of negative space and sparse arrangements enhances the album's sense of tension and unease. The album doesn’t really serve as groundbreaking as the public reception hails it as though, as most of the musical aspects had already been explored in the trip-hop scene before this album.
Lyrically, it's a record that confronts its audience with uncomfortable truths, presenting a stark and unfiltered depiction of contemporary society. However a lot of Tricky’s lyrics come off as quite bland when paired with his at times ackward vocal tone.
Whilst Maxinquaye does hit on a lot of the right things, the overall flaws on many sides make me unable to justify the album as good or decent.

L.A. Woman
The Doors
”L.A. Woman” tries it’s best to capture the dark underbelly of the city of angels with vibrant energy and allure. The Doors do this by painting vivid soundscapes, blending rock, blues, and psychedelic elements. The title track does a good job to convey this with Jim Morrison's haunting vocals and Ray Manzarek's mesmerizing keyboard work adding an extra layer of intrigue.
The hypnotic rhythm and Manzarek's haunting keyboard melodies on the track ”Riders on the Storm” is another big highlight of the album whilst Robby Krieger's blistering guitar riffs, John Densmore's dynamic drumming, and Morrison's raw vocals shine through on the track ”The Changeling”. This is an album that demands attention, well shown on this song.
The Doors do a good job of creating rock”y” tracks that still get introspective without it sounding weird. This album kind of confirmed to me that The Doors are a very good band.

Dusty In Memphis
Dusty Springfield
An emotional-sounding soul record that gave me more than I was expecting.
Dusty Springfield's voice effortlessly glides through the arrangements with richness and depth. Her vocal control, combined with a subtle yet powerful delivery works very well in the songs.
The standout track and one that defines this album is undoubtedly "Son of a Preacher Man." This iconic song remains one of Dusty Springfield's signature tunes, with its infectious melody and charm. The song's sultry atmosphere, coupled with Springfield's raw and emotive vocals, make it a highlight on the album.
Tracks like "Breakfast in Bed," "Just One Smile," and "So Much Love" exhibit her ability to interpret various soul-related musical styles with a lot of authenticity. Whether she's belting out powerful notes or delivering delicate, nuanced phrasing, Dusty Springfield's voice shines brightly. Some could however say there is room for more variation, given her talents as a singer.
The production was handled by Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, and Tom Dowd, along with an ensemble of other musicians. The sound is a fusion of strings, horns, and groovy rhythms. Doing a decent job of covering Dusty's vocals.
The lyrics on "Dusty in Memphis" delve into themes of love, heartbreak, longing, and self-discovery. Dusty Springfield's ability to convey the emotions embedded within the songs is definitely solid but these themes and it's lyrical content do start to drag on quite quickly.
Overall it's a solid 60's release to relax to and it does justify a place on the essential albums list.

Back In Black
AC/DC
An example of rock music's raw power, unbridled energy, and unapologetic attitude. This album is an energetic ride from start to finish.
Brian Johnson's gritty vocals take center stage throughout the entire album, giving the songs an unique touch. Sadly, I’m not the biggest fan of his vocals as I find them too whiny at times.
Many of the songs show AC/DC’s unrelenting spirit and unadulterated rock sensibility. Each track boasts infectious hooks, memorable choruses, and infectious guitar solos that will had me air-guitaring along. The band's chemistry is undeniable, with Angus and Malcolm Young's guitar interplay forming the backbone of the album's signature sound. The rhythm section, comprising Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums, provides a solid foundation to the sound.
The title-track is the album’s most recognizable and most memorable song with it’s guitar riff and Johnson's powerful vocals. My favorite song however is ”You Shook Me All Night Long”, highlighted by it’s amazing chorus.
This is no-doubt a rock classic, well mixed and produced and had I been a bigger fan of the vocal work, this wouldve earned a higher rating.

Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
Bill Callahan
Whilst the album is introspective and thought-provoking, the almost spoken-work dragged out lyrics take away some of the enjoyment.
Bill Callahan’s lyrics are introspective and enigmatic, leaving room for interpretation and personal reflection. However I didn’t enjoy a lot of the songwriting, especially the repetitive parts.
Even though it wasn’t my cup of te, Bill Callahan can put together some interesting themes with his writing. Tracks like "Eid Ma Clack Shaw" and "Rococo Zephyr" showcase his ability to craft evocative narratives. The instrumentation does it’s part as well, with each instrument serving a purpose and adding layers of depth to the overall sound.
The album definitely has it’s good parts as well, like the lush, orchestral arrangements and delicate guitar melodies on the title-track.
The production work is however not flawless either and there are moments where the pacing can feel slightly monotonous. Some tracks blend together, making it difficult for individual songs to stand out. However, this can also be seen as a deliberate choice to maintain the album's cohesive atmosphere.
Overall I do think there are many many indie folk records better than this one, I appreciate the big effort from Callahan, I guess.

Slipknot
Slipknot
A sonic assault that embraces chaos and channels it into a potent force of metal music.
The eerie samples, pounding drums, and distorted guitar riffs set the stage for the explosive onslaught that is Slipknot. The album's relentless energy and aggressive soundscapes showcase unparalleled ability to create a sonic landscape that reflects the chaos and intensity of the human psyche.
Some highlights include, "Wait and Bleed" thag catapults you into a frenzy of piercing vocals, rapid-fire drumming, and sharp guitar work. The raw emotion and vulnerability in Corey Taylor's delivery make it a song worth listening to. "Surfacing" exemplifies the band's knack for crafting infectious, heavy-hitting hooks that leave an indelible mark on the listener's psyche. The combination of Sid Wilson's scratching and sampling with the pummeling percussion work of Joey Jordison creates an explosive and electrifying atmosphere.
What sets "Slipknot" apart is the band's ability to seamlessly blend ferocious aggression with moments of melodic respite. "Scissors" stands out as a prime example, featuring haunting acoustic guitar passages that weave in and out of the brutal onslaught, displaying the band's musical versatility and depth. The atmospheric interludes, such as "Prosthetics" and "Eeyore," offer brief moments of reprieve amidst the chaos. This element works very well and makes the following drops hit even harder.
Lyrically, "Slipknot" delves into themes of anger, frustration, and the darker aspects of the human psyche. Corey Taylor's raw and emotionally charged vocals bring these lyrics to life
Production-wise, Ross Robinson's guidance ensured that each instrument had its place in the mix, creating a wall of sound that is simultaneously quite crushing and crystal clear.
Slipknot's debut album solidified their position as pioneers and trailblazers with their raw energy, unflinching aggression, and fearless exploration of the human psyche.

Live!
Fela Kuti
Recorded in 1971 at the infamous Afrodisia club in Lagos, Nigeria, this live album serves as a testament to Fela's unrivaled artistry and his role in pioneering the Afrobeat genre.
Fela Kuti's huge presence is felt throughout the entire performance, as his vocals, infectious saxophone solos, and powerful piano playing take center stage. Backed by Africa 70, a group of talented musicians, Fela blends elements of jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional Nigerian music into a distinct sound.
The sound quality of the recording is surprisingly good, considering its age and the live setting. The dynamic range and clarity of the instruments are preserved remarkably well, allowing you to fully appreciate the intricate interplay between the musicians. The album's energy and authenticity make it feel like you're right there in the crowd, witnessing Fela Kuti's performance firsthand.
His music became a powerful weapon against oppression, and Live! captures the essence of Fela's activism politially in the form of a classic performance of African art.

Parachutes
Coldplay
A record peaked with melancholic yet hopeful atmosphere.
The album's standout hit, "Yellow," became an instant classic. Its delicate guitar riff and Martin's tender delivery fit together perfectly. "Yellow" showcased Coldplay's ability to craft catchy melodies without sacrificing emotional depth, and it remains one of the band's signature songs.
”Parachutes" maintains a consistent tone throughout, with tracks like "Shiver" and "Trouble" offering a blend of introspection and infectious hooks. These songs show the band’s ability to create radio-friendly yet introspective tunes.
The atmospheric production is a highlight as the album progresses. Tracks like "Sparks" and "We Never Change" create an intimate sonic landscape and really showcase the sound of Coldplay in their early years.
On the downside, "Parachutes" does have moments where the songwriting feels slightly formulaic, with some tracks blending into each other without leaving a distinct impression. While the album maintains a consistent mood, a greater variety in musical styles and tempo could have added more depth to the overall experience.
The overall score lands on a 4 after a lot of self-debating. The album’s many memorable melodies and the overall sound production earns it’s score. However it’s close to a 3.

Oar
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
Best known as a founding member of Moby Grape, Spence takes us on an introspective, long-winded journey.
Each track works like a window into the troubled soul of the artist, with themes centered around love and loss.
Spence has quite a distinctive vocal style, one that carries a lot of vulnerability and emphaty. I wasn’t a big fan of the vocals though, as they drag on a lot. That is unfortunately a downside of many parts on this record. The instrumentation is very stripped-down which leads to most tracks really lacking any sort of likable quality. The guitar gets very old very quickly.
Spence's lyrics throughout Oar are poetic, often painting vivid pictures of his inner struggles and the complexities of life. Whether it's the psychedelic whimsy of "Weighted Down (The Prison Song)" or the sorrowful reflection of "Cripple Creek," each song comes with an emotional effort, something I can appreciate.
The album also is way too long in my opinion and I would have enjoyed it more if it was stripped to maybe 35-40 mins instead of the sleepy hour that we get.
This one was quite hard to finish and just about avoids the lowest score. 2/5, don’t recommend whatsoever.

Blunderbuss
Jack White
A certain departure from the raw and minimalist sound of The White Stripes, Jack White’s solo debut leaves a lot to be desired.
First of all the vocals sound way of on some tracks, especially the ones with stripped-down production. Jack White is better at creating rock anthems, as shown with the songs "Sixteen Saltines" and "Freedom at 21,". However the electric guitar that soars on these tracks sounds really bad at times as well.
Looking at the positives. One of the album's strengths lies in its versatility. Tracks like "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy" and "Blunderbuss" incorporate elements of country and folk, adding a refreshing twist to the overall sound. Also the song-writing for most of the tracks is quite good.
This album isn’t all bad, but the overall sound just does not sound good in my ears and that’s why the low score.

OK Computer
Radiohead
I was too excited when I got this album, really made my Thursday.
OK Computer presents a dystopian vision of the modern world, exploring themes of alienation, consumerism, and technological dependency in a sound of swirling ambience. Thom Yorke's haunting vocals and introspective lyrics perfectly serve as a conduit for the disillusionment and anxiety prevalent in contemporary society.
"Paranoid Android," a standout track and one of the best rock songs of all time, showcases Radiohead's ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical elements. The song transitions from melodic verses to explosive guitar-driven sections, all while maintaining a cohesive narrative. It is an epic sonic journey that encapsulates the album's overall atmospheric and emotional depth. "Karma Police" and "No Surprises" are two other remarkable tracks that demonstrate Radiohead's ability to balance vulnerability and introspection with lush instrumentation. The former's haunting piano melody and Yorke's emotive vocal delivery create a sense of urgency, while the latter's delicate acoustic arrangement juxtaposes with lyrics that express a quiet resignation to the mundane aspects of life. "Climbing Up the Walls" showcases their mastery of creating an unsettling atmosphere through the use of eerie samples and dissonant guitar lines. The use of unconventional time signatures and intricate layering of instruments throughout the album creates a sonic landscape that is both rich and complex. Tracks like ”Exit Music (For A Film” and ”Let Down” are also beautiful with a sense of longing and emotional feelings tied into every word.
The production on OK Computer is meticulous, thanks to the collaboration between the band and producer Nigel Godrich. The album effortlessly blends traditional rock instrumentation with electronic elements and innovative production techniques, creating a sound lays the foundation for genre-bending performance.
The album's critical and commercial success solidified Radiohead's place as one of the most important and innovative bands of their era and they are in my opinion one of the greatest bands of all time due to their unparalleled discography, and OK Computer is their crown jewel.
This album is absolutely timeless and one of the greatest records of all time. PLEASE listen to it, if you haven’t already.

Black Holes and Revelations
Muse
Filled with grandiose instrumentation and arena-rock anthems. The album is quite instantly infectious with it’s catchy hooks and Matt Bellamy vocals.
The album blends pulsating synths, heavy guitar riffs, and dramatic orchestral arrangements. It's this fusion of different musical styles that gives "Black Holes and Revelations" a distinct and captivating sound.
Lyrically, the album tackles a variety of themes, including political and social commentary. Songs like "Assassin" and "City of Delusion" delve into topics such as government corruption and societal unrest, delivering thought-provoking messages through poetic and metaphorical lyrics. Meanwhile, tracks like "Invincible" and "Soldier's Poem" explore themes of personal strength and resilience.
Matt Bellamy’s vocals are impressive but his guitar work is equally impressive with technical proficiency and knack for crafting memorable riffs. Chris Wolstenholme's basslines provide a solid foundation for the songs, while Dominic Howard's drumming adds energy and precision.
Definitely a good listen.
