Bubble And Scrape by Sebadoh

It's kinda my worst nightmare. It either gave me a headache last night or made my headache worse. The singing is whiney and bad, the instruments are uninteresting and bad. There's some screaming here too. The thing I hate too is that it doesn't feel like it's bad to prove a point or for artistic reasons, it just seems bad - like a band that would lose in the first round of the battle of the bands. They sound like a lot of the punk bands that I don't like because I hate their singers.

Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Oct 23 2023

Really varied sounds across the album. Goes from folk singer-songwriter (what I maybe think of when I think of a Neil young) and then goes to rock band with distorted guitar and pushing forward drums and tempo. 4. Both are executed extremely well and are really nice to listen to. Feels like an album you could sink your teeth into for a while. The differences in sound all make sense too, and progress as you listen. Recommend first and last songs as good examples of how you boiled the frog over the course of the album. Neil Youngs voice is kinda annoying, a little whiney for me.

My Generation by The Who
Oct 24 2023

I mostly listened to the mono version since that's the one that's linked, and quick search suggests it's the authentic version. It's weird, there are some songs here that hardly feel like "rock" because I'm poisoned by being aware of really hard rock. But when I look for a genre to label this, I definitely feel like it's quintessential rock. Definitely interesting that "My Generation" is from their first album. Definitely a song that's so famous I can sing it just from hearing the title. The album is a lot cleaner and jazz/blues-ier than I assume when I think of The Who. It could almost be confused with a Beatles album for a few bits - just with a little more guitar solos. I feel like the drum set The Who uses is very iconic - idk what it is about the drums, maybe they're flatter than normal, or have less bass drum or something? But compared to some newer music, it's nice for the drums to be busy, but not noisy - you can hear what's happening still. There's a lot more "Beach Boys" harmony than I would have expected - although there is some in the most famous Who songs so I should expect it. I don't hear a lot of this harmony in the music I typically listen to, but I really like it. It gets slightly noisy at certain parts, but not in a bad way. (Eventually it got to be a bit too noisy.) The Ox is pretty neat - seems like no lyrics, basically like a jam session. The end of the album got a little bit noisy to me, but might have been related to my mood rather than the actual music. Actually it's the horns, like the mellophones or some thing, they're not great imo.

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Oct 25 2023

Love the piano in her music. Her voice is also amazing. The sound is really clean - more than one guitar stands out at a time, her voice, the bass. The bass really stands out which is nice - 3 songs in it feels like a jazz trio album, with her singing on it. It's such easy listening. I wonder if I'm "basic" for liking it so much, but it is just really good and enjoyable to listen to. Love me some accordion on Painter Song. I get some Stevie Wonder vibes at certain moments - really soulful.

In Utero by Nirvana
Oct 26 2023

If I thought I had trouble understanding the lyrics of the average song, whoa boy, if I sing to this, it'll be Na-Na-Nas. For some reason I assumed that Nirvana was a lot more noise than music, but I'm happy that there is a lot more interesting music here that I thought. The instruments are relatively easy to distinguish from one another, and there are melodies and chords to listen to. There is still noise on this album and I think it's more than I prefer. It's not really my vibe. Like the music is good, and I think the lyrics are good, but it's not for me. It's a little too hard or a little too much distortion. Seems like everyone is talented on their instruments and together they make something notable, but it's not the type of music I prefer listening to.

The Chronic by Dr. Dre
Oct 27 2023

The jams are good. The driving bass, and basslines, and electronic piano-like melodies are all really nice to listen to. This is Snoop in his element, which I don't think I've heard before - it's good. It's good music to work to - there's nothing distracting about the songs, there's no noise, every instrument has a place. Disc spinning is great - basically I've only heard it before on Tony Hawk game soundtracks lol (there's definitely some nostalgia tied to this sound because of Tony Hawk games). The language is "mature" in the sense that it has the explicit label, but since it's genuine (and feels that way) I think it's awesome that there is music that I imagine sounds like the way people talk in real life. There's a lot of talking in the album, which I wonder if that was new or not - seems like it fits the overall vibe of the album.

Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Oct 30 2023

Some of the songs are really amazing and take me to where some of Bruce hornsby's folk takes me. Some of the songs have a little too much holiday choir in them (like the opening to rockin' around the Christmas tree by Brenda Lee) or a little too much "Godspell" choir. I think in general the album benefits from the fact that I like the genre. But it doesn't seem particularly challenging music or complex instrumentation, and it doesn't feel like it's super noteworthy.

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Oct 31 2023

Upbeat, good harmonies, good mixing/balance of each instrument. Subtle organ is really nice and good bass. I was thinking that maybe Dreams would feel overhyped, but it just is so nice to listen to. I did not expect to hear really good fingerpicking guitar (Never Going Back Again) but it is awesome. Never Going Back Again followed by Don't Stop feels a little odd - like almost unbelievable that they are on the same album, especially back to back. Go Your Own Way has some of the best backing music and melodies that I've heard. It's just so interesting to listen to the pieces underneath the voices (the voices are really great too though). The bassline is just sick and backing guitar too. It feels like a band, and feels like they all are contributing and doing something interesting (and having fun). Some of the guitar solos are kinda whatever, but the one on The Chain stands out. I feel like the bass guitar really helps this album stand out. It's really clear - definitely the sound I enjoy from a bass guitar. Album keeps it up through the end - the last song Gold Dust Woman has some really nice guitar on it, and is a great song too (although I could do with less yelling/moaning at the end lmao). I feel a little odd loving the harmonies here when I just yesterday listened to Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes, but I think there's more instrumentation in Fleetwood Mac compared to the Fleet Foxes album.

Dub Housing by Pere Ubu
Nov 01 2023

My initial reaction is that they definitely fit the "avant-garage" label. Some of the music is actually good/fine - instruments are interesting to listen to and the themes feel fine. The singing is mostly what I dislike - a little too much haphazard singing or just forced half yelling which just feels so bad to listen to. The singer sounds like Morty from Rick and Morty, ugh. Thriller actually sounds like disorienting music you would play at a haunted house. Like why are they scratching their guitar strings. And having Halloween music play. Some of it qualifies as "noise" to me, but not all. I think I'm disappointed that there's actually some music hiding here, because I don't want to listen to it. I reserve 1 star for albums that I would be sad or upset if someone were to play them in most situations - I believe this fits the criteria. As an art project, it's interesting, but as a music album that I want to listen to, I think it's pretty close to the bottom for my personal preference.

Henry's Dream by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Nov 02 2023

It's got a little bit of a Meatloaf vibe. Straight to You sounds a little too much like I'm in the dentist office in the early 2000s (Hootie and the blowfish). Brother my cup is empty - there's a bit of a cowboy vibe in here (like devil went down to georgia) - like the singer has a point to prove. Christina the Astonishing is a little too much telling a story over vamped music - it's super uninteresting, except for maybe the lyrics, which I'm not interested in. It's really mostly fine. It's well produced, the sound is pretty good. It sounds sorta like normal music although John Finn's Wife has a lot of strings and production value which is cool. It's too narrative for what I prefer.

Face to Face by The Kinks
Nov 03 2023

At the start it reminded me of the Beatles and I wasn't really feeling it, but as the album continued, I warmed up to it a lot. Looks like they were releasing around the same time as the Beatles so it makes sense that they have a similar sound. I mostly listened in the shower, and it was good. I don't have a lot of comments about it, it's pretty fine. Not really revolutionary, but definitely good.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Nov 06 2023

Really good music - good blues is just so great, and this is good blues. Good bass guitar (interesting to listen to it), good piano parts, good guitar. Singing is really good too, almost a little screamy but actually just perfect - fits the vibe perfectly. It's probably not revolutionary, but all of the pieces coming together in this way is unique and makes for a great listen. The album has slow, it has fast, and it's soulful. Chef's kiss Oh man there's organ here too. It has some blues brothers vibes which is amazing. I feel like I would want my band to sound like this.

Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine
Nov 07 2023

I feel like I always believed Rage Against the Machine to be way too hard metal. But the bass and guitar are super good and interesting to listen to. There is a little more screaming and a little more "noise" here than I generally prefer. I liked it. With a good set of headphones (that I use at my computer) and at an appropriate (not too loud) volume, it's great. I wonder if worse speakers would make me hate it, because I would be unable to make out the bass or other interesting pieces. 4/5 stars

Medúlla by Björk
Nov 08 2023

The singing and music is quite good. It's a little experimental, which is sometimes bad. But it's largely really good. It's a little theatrical, or video game music-like. Reminds me a lot of Imogen Heap, who I like as well. Some of the voice sounds are just weird, but I assume that's part of the point (sighing and breathing, grunting/animal/sex noises). Ancestors is horrible - the heavy breathing and grunting is just bad. It sits in the middle of avant-garde (and unlistenable) and actually good (like something I want to listen to). Would have been a 4 if certain songs weren't so off-putting.

Bone Machine by Tom Waits
Nov 09 2023

The piano, sax, and other instruments are good. His voice is pretty annoying, and feels like it takes away from the otherwise good music. On "Who are you this Time" he sounds like bad Bruce Springsteen. I just really DON'T like his voice - I don't really listen to lyrics, but I do hear voices and they very often turn me off from bands/musicians; this is one of them. "Black Wings" has the vamped music behind someone telling stories, which is something I'm not a huge fan of. It's kinda Western which is neat, but the novelty does get me passed the fact that I don't really like it. None of these songs particularly struck my fancy. It's fine, but it's really not something I liked listening to. I feel like there's more enjoyable music that sounds like this basically anywhere you look.

Dire Straits by Dire Straits
Nov 10 2023

Good listen, with good instrumentation and good voices. It's got that Allman brothers vibe, which I love. This is good music.

Van Halen by Van Halen
Nov 13 2023

"I'm the one" has a surprising a capella section, that was amazing. Really good rock music. I know a lot of the songs but thought it would be harder rock than I prefer, which is not true. I wish the bass stood out more but that could just be the earphones I'm using instead of the overheads I wear typically. The vocal harmonies throughout are fantastic. Main singer is both good and mediocre, a little yelly, but good still. Some good blues bones as well. It's just shy of 5 stars for me, it would need better singing and maybe some less hard rock.

Nov 14 2023

This album seems to have really high highs, and pretty mediocre lows. A few songs are guitar hero classics, and then others are very meh, or the singing is something I don't like, or it's too noisy. Take a Bow is really good, Knights of Cydonia is a banger (guitar hero classic), Starlight is also a modern classic. Second listen is nicer than the first, I think depending on my mood the guitar can feel more or less noisy (and same for the singer's voice being more or less annoying).

Nevermind by Nirvana
Nov 15 2023

Music seems better and singer less annoying than the other Nirvana album I listened to ([[In Utero - Nirvana]]). It's pretty good - I like it. I feel like I can appreciate the drums and guitar a lot. The last song: Endless, Nameless is really not my cup of tea. I don't like it at all, almost takes a whole star off the album lol.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Nov 16 2023

Love the electronic vibes and the groove that this has. Hip hop sits well with me, and adding some electronic to it makes it even better. Some of the songs were whatever, some were quite good. It was a really nice album to listen to while getting some work done.

Third by Portishead
Nov 17 2023

"We Carry On" is absolutely horrible - the constant tone that provides nothing but makes you feel like you're in a trance. This song sorta feels like bad electronica, or bad club music. Overall it's definitely not my vibe. It's pretty unenjoyable. It's like shitty video game music - almost like the game sounds are still part of the OST. Some of the songs abruptly stop, which is just dumb.

Ramones by Ramones
Nov 20 2023

There's too much guitar playing the same chord over and over again. It's generally pretty okay, but there's just too much noise. It is great for a song or two, but for a whole album it's too much. The singing is kinda bad, and it definitely isn't good for a whole album back to back to back. If someone were to play any of these songs, I would think that's chill. If someone wanted to play the whole album I would ask "why". The songs are just too similar for me to want to listen to the whole album, I'll take just one or two songs, thanks. As music, it might be a 4, but as an album, I think it's like a 2.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Nov 21 2023

It's so much better than I was expecting. Kinda bluesy and a little bit of an Allman brothers vibe. It's definitely easy listening - good music to work to.

Beyond Skin by Nitin Sawhney
Nov 22 2023

Some of the songs are pretty not my taste, but still good music. Tides is some actually amazing piano trio music. The beats have been pretty good, and the singing is decent, although the middle eastern type singing isn't something I prefer. There's some weird stereo stuff going on, it's kinda neat, but also disorienting. "The Conference" is both absolutely amazing and kinda horrible. It's this beat box-esche tongue mouth noises, like they're sounding out rhythms in band class and it is cool, but also annoying.

Roxy Music by Roxy Music
Nov 23 2023

It's rock and roll/hairspray type music from the 70s, but I kinda hate it. I don't like the singing and I don't like the balance. There's some weird noises here and there that also don't really fit. The horns don't really add to it, and annoy me. It feels super out of place, like there's so much better music in so many other places. If you're listening to this, there's probably an album that does exactly what you like even better and for longer (more songs).

Wild Gift by X
Nov 24 2023

Bro, the lady and the man singing the same shit at the same time is like part of my nightmares. Her voice is absolutely horrible - like why are you yelling lady and singing off key. The band backing is awesome though. The guitar and bass and drums are all really good. Unfortunately, the singing takes away so much enjoyment, it makes it like a 2 to me. Listening to the last few tracks, where there is less duplication on the singing recovers it back to a 3. The band is really nice to listen to, and the singer is more tolerable toward the end, and knowing it's a punk type band makes the singing fit a little better. I can picture myself at a show for a band like this.

Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden
Nov 27 2023

Damn this shit slaps. Really good bass, and guitar, and drums. The singer is decent as well, and so far (2 songs in) all the songs have a different vibe. It's sorta like if the Alman brother's rocked *tongue out fingers in the rock shape*, and it's sick. Enjoyed it all the way through the album. Nice change of pace to the slower 70s music I had recently Wild Gift - X and Roxy Music - Roxy Music.

Ready To Die by The Notorious B.I.G.
Nov 28 2023

The beginning started a little slow - I'm not a big fan of the phone calls/news stories/whatever. I also could do without "Fuck Me (Interlude)". "Juicy" and "Everyday Struggle" have been good vibes with good music. The rap is good too, and not overly explicit - it IS pretty explicit, especially the songs which are literally sex noises.

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
Nov 29 2023

It's a lot more sound effects and edited together noises, which I actually kinda like. It's pretty catchy and good. Yesterday I had Ready To Die - The Notorious B.I.G. and it was a little less fun feeling, a little more raunchy and real. At the surface this appeals to me a little more. Like maybe Ready to Die was 2.5 and this is a 3.5. I think they're both 3s though. It sounds like 90s commercial music or 90s music on Nickelodeon - I can picture the clothes that people would wear in a music video of these songs.

Casanova by The Divine Comedy
Nov 30 2023

I kinda fucking hate it. It's like bad broadway music, with mediocre cocktail hour singing. I don't really find it interesting - the instruments are either normal and boring, or unusual and bad. It's also like mediocre offbrand tony bennett. If I wasn't upset that I feel like it sucks, it might actually be good. So I feel like maybe I'm being too harsh to it for some reason. Giving it a 3 cuz it seems fine, but I want to give it a 2.

3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers
Dec 01 2023

This shit slaps. Great guitar solo, good bass and drums, good keyboard. I absolutely love the bass. They keyboard really drives the music to an amazing direction. A funky version of "Listen to the music" is everything I have ever wanted.

Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
Dec 04 2023

Feels like a great 4.5/5 album. The music is great, drums, guitar, bass are all good. Singing is good/fine. But the singing is a little annoying and there's some weird shit happening here and there, which is fine and good, but keeps it that one step below the 5/5 type album. I just have a few too many objections to a few too many things.

The Band by The Band
Dec 05 2023

The piano is really nice. I like harmonicas too. The singing is fine, both good and bad - a little whiney. Pretty good album to work to.

Bubble And Scrape by Sebadoh
Dec 06 2023

It's kinda my worst nightmare. It either gave me a headache last night or made my headache worse. The singing is whiney and bad, the instruments are uninteresting and bad. There's some screaming here too. The thing I hate too is that it doesn't feel like it's bad to prove a point or for artistic reasons, it just seems bad - like a band that would lose in the first round of the battle of the bands. They sound like a lot of the punk bands that I don't like because I hate their singers.

Fear and Whiskey by Mekons
Dec 07 2023

Harmonica is nice to hear. It's a little noisy, especially on certain songs. It has a decent vibe. I really like some of the instruments and sounds, but I also didn't find anything particularly interesting. It was very easy to listen to while working, which is both good and bad. Singer is kinda not for me.

Moby Grape by Moby Grape
Dec 08 2023

I feel like they were pretty good. Good guitar sound, pretty good music. Singing was pretty good. No complaints really, easy to listen to while working. Nothing really stood out, but more in a good way. Feel like it was better than Fear and Whiskey - Mekons. Good fingerpicking I'm pretty sure. It has that great mix between folk, rock, and country. It hits the spot for me. It maybe would be 5 stars if I was more familiar with it or really focused on listening.

Different Class by Pulp
Dec 11 2023

I hate the singer - he's like offbranf David Bowie. It actually reminds me of the British album I listened to recently which was also horrible lmao. Reminds me of some song from Rick and Morty that I thought sounded bad on purpose. The band and surrounding music is pretty good. Sort of a classic case of me hating the song or band because the singer is unlistenable. There's some story telling in the lyrics, and I have never really liked that much. Still don't like it here. Yeah I just don't like story telling songs. I don't listen to lyrics, and the music that goes along is not interesting enough. Disco 2000 was actually kinda fun - it was upbeat and no story telling. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. - "Why are they spelling" Overall pretty not good for me. Didn't like the singer too much.

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Dec 12 2023

I like this a lot. It's the type of folk music that I'm often looking for. Chill vibe, feels like I could be by the fire or out on the hiking trail. Really easy to listen to while working or chilling or reading. The instruments seemed interesting too.

The Yes Album by Yes
Dec 13 2023

Getting into bass at the time that I'm listening this album feels like perfect timing. Some interesting bass lines happening in the first song. It's a vibe. It's music and nice to listen to. But it definitely also isn't songs in the sense that most other albums are - it's sort of rambling in a musical sense. I'm slightly poisoned because the musicians at our most recent wedding (Mara's) were too focused on soloing and not focused on helping the crowd have fun - I sorta feel like that's this music. Track 4 has some great vocals and interesting melody. Longest fade out ever in A Venture.

Call of the Valley by Shivkumar Sharma
Dec 14 2023

I couldn't find this on YouTube music, so I listened on YouTube, hope it was the right thing. It was whatever. Nothing upsetting, but also nothing particularly noticeable. The instruments sound kind of neat, and it was easy to listen to. But I also won't remember listening to it.

Heroes by David Bowie
Dec 15 2023

It's kinda good. Groovy, interesting, and the instrumentation is what I tend to like. It's also kinda generic and there's noise in here that I'm not loving. The Secret Life of Arabia is a nice groovy song. Overall it's been a decent album. A few bad parts but mostly enjoyable, classic rock with a little bit of an edge.

21 by Adele
Apr 10 2024

Bruh this album is 13 years old? Damn. (Heard "Rolling in the Deep" on the radio this morning.) She can sing really well and the groove to Rolling the Deep is a bop. I probably shouldn't feel like it reminds me of KT Tunstall, but it does. There's actually some respectable bass on the album, most noticed during "Set Fire to the Rain". There's a lot going on, but it's not noisy. "Take it all" is a great song, the piano really sings alongside her. I'll be Waiting is a jam. It's a great listen from beginning to end. It's not all the same song, and goes between certain genres, from singer-songwriter to a little bit more band/instrumentation.

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Apr 11 2024

I always think that Led Zeppelin music is going to be super hard rock or metal or something - but it's just classic rock to me. Great guitar parts, with what's almost fingerpicking and not much distortion at all. I don't really like the singer, but he's not all that bad. Dazed and confused is a little too rambling guitar solos that aren't particularly interesting. The instrumentation is really good like the bass, guitar, drums, and I think there's some keys. Don't love the singer, and the overall music is less than what I like.

On The Beach by Neil Young
Apr 12 2024

It's kinda sleepy, noticing now on the song "On the Beach". The instruments are pretty good and decently interesting. His voice is fine, a little whiney, but decent. Feels like a very mid (3) album. Pretty good, wouldn't mind it being played basically anywhere, but it's a little too sleepy and uninteresting for me in general.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Apr 15 2024

It's a little too BritPop-py. Sleeping music that you can sway to. I like the instruments but generally not the music. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" has a decently interesting bass line and overall vibe, but I don't really like the mousey voice that's singing along with the main singer. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" I actually kinda know this song. Maybe cuz it's in 500 days of summer (which I've never seen). And the bass line is good. It's pretty okay. But I'd rather not really hear it.

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Apr 16 2024

Love the instrumentation on song 1. Good bass, good guitar Had to look up the name of the blues bar in Chicago Kingston Mines, because it takes me back. A couple of songs that have different energy - Hot Blue and Righteous particularly is a nice slow one. I really like it. The classic blues vibe, with the electric guitar is just *chef's kiss*. This is just like what music is supposed to be.

Transformer by Lou Reed
Apr 17 2024

I like the bass. "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Perfect Day" are the most listened to songs here by far. They're pretty famous - "Perfect day" has even been on Rick and Morty. I like the music. Feels like really good music for what sounds like a pretty small band. He kinda sounds like what I think David Bowie sounds like (but maybe he just sounds like Lou Reed lol). I don't really like that. It's kinda a weird album, all different sorts of songs here. It's fine, don't love it, definitely don't dislike it.

Moondance by Van Morrison
Apr 18 2024

Saxophones and keyboard are nice. Don't really have a lot of saxophone in modern pop music. The title song "Moondance" is pretty famous. It's good too (not a huge fan of the singing). The bass is dope. Crazy love is also pretty famous, and good. Bro the bass just sets the VIBES. Into the mystic sounds like a sick bass song

S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things
Apr 19 2024

Good bass in S.F. Sorrow is born. Very beatles-y A little noisy. A lot beatles coded. It's decent. The bass is good, instrumentation makes sense.

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
Apr 22 2024

It's really chill and quiet. Music to just vibe to. Good bass tone, especially on "A Forest" at the end I found the album really easy to listen to, especially while working. It's just generally pretty good, but I'm really surprised that it is influential enough to make the 1001 albums list. Rainy day album as the people on 1001 albums website say.

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
Apr 23 2024

It makes you dance. It does. Can't be mad when you're listening to this dope shit. Piano and horns - sign me up.

A Hard Day's Night by Beatles
Jul 12 2024

A hard day's night (the song) is classic. The stereo sound is also incredible. Good harmonies on If I Fell. A few different styles on the album - the quick rock, and the relatively calm ballads. I'm probably biased cuz I've heard this album and I really like it. The sound is very pure - it's really easy to hear everything that's going on. The melodies are good and the lyrics are decent (a little corny or very literal.) I think you could put this on in most situations and it would be good, although you might get called a boomer.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake

Really good instrumentation and good guitar, bass, and flute throughout the album. I didn't really like the singer, but it didn't make it worse. It had a few songs with a really fun flute vibe (Bryter Layter and Sunday). It was a little bit muzak-like in a few sections, so it was definitely easy to listen to while working. Sounded a bit like Dire Straits (Sultan of Swing). On the edge between a 3 and a 4, but going with a 4 because it was a little interesting with the added flute.
