Wanted to like this a bit more than I did; some interesting textures and I appreciate the production using samples, I always found that cool with older hip hop.
‘Number Song’ has some drive to it, cool breakdown and beats.
‘Napalm Brain’ also had a good sound to it.
Wasn’t a huge fan of much else on it. Cool listen though and glad I gave it a rip.
Of course Ive heard how impactful and influential this album was, and definitely heard the singles before; but it was nice to really dig in.
I love the mix of producers, jazz elements, cinematic style, and attention to detail.
Standouts: All the vocal interludes, Sherane, Backseat Freestyle, Drakes verse on Poetic Justice,
Love Miles Davis, even love his newer stuff, but this was a mid album. Not a ton to really react to, a little dull.
Was expecting a bit more from such a ‘seminal’ album. Beats were a bit bland and got repetitive.
I appreciate the lyrics and the aggressive style, just not my cuppa.
Decent production, I love live albums so it’s nice to hear these tracks live from a band like this.
Never really listened to much Thin Lizzy, but I’m digging it.
Conflicted on this album, starts out horrifically slow and dull. Picks up about halfway through and some decent tunes in the back half.
Curious what his other albums on this list sound like now…
Glaring omission in my classic rock upbringing (parents were more hair metal/glam rock than blues) that I am thoroughly enjoying experiencing now.
Love the heavy rhythm section, vocals, and extended instrumental sections. Production is kinda messy, even on remastered, but still lively and fun.
Everything about this album’s sound should throw me off, yet somehow I find myself really enjoying the journey and songwriting in a melancholy/emo/punk way.
Fever dream of an album at times, not sure I love the blend of punk and folk despite my typical enjoyment of those genres.
+1 of the original sound and lyrical content, but music is just not for me.
I liked the music, didn’t care for the singing/lyrics.
Not a big fan of this style of indie.
Cool to hear some of the old Blues standards from Elvis. Mixed bag production wise, fun pop. I echo others here, music wasn’t really new; just new to white folk.
Another hip hop album I wanted to like more than I did.
I struggle with this type of sound, I never liked the 80’s computerized keyboards and drum machines. Not enough unique sampling or interesting beats to draw me in. New jack swing style isn’t for me.
Initially thought maybe worth a 3, but then album kept dragging on.
I appreciate the stripped back approach on this album, haunting in a chic way, but I can’t seem to get past the idea that a condensed album consisting of the best tracks from this album and the one prior would be a better overall record.
She also needs to pump the brakes and let her music breathe a bit more in between albums, and maybe check out some other producers than Jack Antonoff, the same approach and vocal pattern on e v e r y track gets boring and cheesy after a while.
Wow, not really sure where to begin.
In my youth I always wrote off The Beatles due to their perceived softer sound while I was head banging to Nu-Metal.
How wrong I was; though I think I appreciate this album more now having been able to listen to the vast amount of music The Beatles have influenced.
I love the progressive elements of this album, I love when the vocals get harsh and elevated, and I think the dynamics are spot on. I think this album is worthy of a 5 but since this is the first full listen of a Beatles album and I know some of their earlier stuff is a bit more aggressive, I’ll stick with a strong 4.
Great album, confirmed banger.
When there is actual jazz happening via instrumentals I like it, but too much singing and generic bossa nova to have much bite.
Loved this one, knew a bit more than I expected!
Grew up with it, not a huge pop fan. Some classics of course.
A less likable Beatles I find.
Production is terrible, couldn’t hear a thing. Not my jam.
A good lounge album, some great vocal performances. Overall a bit samey.
These guys just sound Cool and effortless. Good blues.
Better than expected, like a few others said, its like a full James Bond movie album.
I actually love the beats and aggression, however the rapping and length of the album hinders.
I thought they went a bit harder than this album lets on. Like a cooler Beatles.
A solid album, a bit long in the tooth, but I can see the appeal. I appreciate the influences on later punk and Ska, but a bit tame for my tastes.
A few highlights here and there, and surprised I like this 80’s synth-heavy style at all. But I found most of the album to be a bit dull and plodding overall.
Did not love this one, I like some Police tracks but this album disappoints.
Good album, love some swing. Some highlights and great soloing.
A good listen, some good songs, some background music. I like the genre and feel overall do 3 stars.
Dunno what it is but the whole drum machine synth style always throws me off. That and the “goofier” talking heads vocals don’t do it for me.
I can see it’s influence and how some could enjoy more.
Really enjoyed this, classy and classic.
Love prog rock, didn’t love this one. 2.5 star really but no halfsies
Great soul, lotta classics, great voice and band
Good beats, very repetitive which got grating.
This is awesome. I sometime look down upon earlier punk as I don’t find it as exciting as more recent metal-influenced punk genres, but this holds up great. Can see tons of influence across more modern bands that I love.
I love this album, top to bottom. Fond memories back in college listening with my buddies. The jazz influences and instrumentals combo with great beats lets this thing sing.
