Good album. Hadn’t really listened to much other than Hallelujah before. Highlights were Last Goodbye, Lover, and Forget Her. I’m going to go with three stars, but this is the first album I’m ranking. Might be a four.
Meh. I have a feeling the 80s are going to generally fall this way. Don’t like the synth. No passion. Two highlights were Drip Dead Legs and House of Pain. I bet this would come of better live.
Nice surprise for album #2. I can see this getting some serious rotation as some chill but rocking background. Highlights are Rolling > Dazed, Hero, and Solid Ground.
I mean…classic. What a debut album. Not sure what else to say. Been listening to this since I was like 14.
Not really my cup of tea. Ok for some background music, but not something I’d listen too again
I would say saved by a few CLASSIC songs: Baba
O’Riley and Won’t Get Fooled Again. I listened to the deluxe version on Amazon and found I enjoyed the New York session material better. More raw and loose.Those sessions made the produced material better.
It’s good. Perhaps good background music. Just not something I’m going to come back to much. Highlights were Sunday Shining, Even After All, and Your Love Gets Sweeter. Added that last one to my favorites, at least.
I enjoyed this. Never really listened to him much and didn’t expect this. I was thinking it was all the upbeat stuff. Pleasant surprise. Would I come back? Not sure. I’ll stretch at three.
As a purported Neil Young fan, I have slept on this album. Shame on me. Lots of top notch stuff. Even picked up the guitar to learn Albequerque and Borrowed Tune.
Bowie has never really done it for me, and I don’t think this is close to his best work. Most of it is meh. Highlight, if I had to stretch would be heroes, obviously.
Listened to this in Puerto Rico. Just saw modest mose Friday. So much influence here. Really enjoyed the album.
Debased catchy
I bleed. Like the guitar riff
Hear Comes Your Man - only one I recognize so far, probably a good reason, catchy.
Mr Grieves - surprising, great
There goes my gun - might have heard this too. Like the melody.
Hey - nice little tunes
Timeless
Also listen to this in Puerto Rico. Very enjoyable.
Highlights:
Half as Much
Worries Mind
You Win Again - such a classic
I can’t stop loving you
Ok with hints of the greatness of Doolittle
Bone Machine- great album starter
Something against you - a little too rough and punky for me these days.
Where is my mind - the melodic stuff that comes to mind when I think of pixies
Nothing much else stood out to me.
Underground - most popular song on the album? Not impressed so far.
Shore leave - now this I can dig
Halfway point and I just want it to be over. Tom was always someone I thought I’d want to check out. Hopefully his other stuff is better. Just not my thing. I guess we see how the second half goes….
Ok, maybe swordfishtrombone?
Meh
Classic and brings up memories of high school
Sunday Morning - one of my all time VU songs
Waiting for my man - classic
Femme fatale - Nico’s voice is just beautiful
Venus in Furs - shiny boots of leather!!!
Run run run - never one of my favorites
All Tomorrows parties - another VU fave
Heroin - such a ride, every time
There she goes - mostly forgettable IMO
Trails off after this…
Another Puerto Rico listen. I really enjoyed this.
So Young, not sold off the bat but that piano part was intriguing.
Animal Nigrate - solid
She’s not dead - solid acoustic
Moving - the swirly parts are nice
The Drowners - great opening riff, great tune
Sleeping pills - pumpkins / queen
Next life - another quiet gem
Where the pigs don’t fly - nice what-you-might-expect-but-still-good album ender
Puerto Rico listen. It was fine. Had it on in the background while reading. It was just there but nothing really caught my ear.
Plane ride home from Puerto Rico. Just didn’t really grab me.
Not something I had heard before. Scooby snacks was kinda fun. Album felt a bit repetitive.
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
Maybe this was badass in 86 but even as a kid they never really interested me. First album I have skipped through sounds.
Rhymin and strain - meh
The new style -even worse; Self referential BS
She’s crafty - different background riffs, same hip hop emptiness
Fuck me, every song sounds the same….
Girls - at least this sounds different. Ugh.
Fight - at least this has a decent anthemic chorus. Heard this 100s of times;I still skipped through.
No sleep - best so far, not a high bar
I can’t wait for this album to end.
This does not bode well for hip hop in general…
Never really dug rap but let’s see how this goes
* Body bag: Damn, that’s a lot of gunshots
* Impression: lol
* Ziplock: like the flow of this one
* Next few: meh
* Ed: liked the horns
* Bitches 2: not bad
* Straight up: respect the message
* OG: more guns…still like the flow of verses
* Evil E: lol
* Flyby: eh
* Midnight: sounds like this influenced beastie boys. 91? That timeline works right. Never liked boys either
* Midnight: meh
* Chicken: lol, interesting to hear about album use
* MVP: zzzz
* Lifestyles: wh
* Body count: guitar??? I was unaware of this development
* Prepared, escape: meh
* Killer: dig the beats and samples, too short
* Pulse: good flow
* Tower: meh
* Shoulda: interesting finish
Just not a rap fan. Seems likes this is his fourth album, which surprises me for a 1991 release. Curious to see what some of his earlier albums are like. Doubt those will have a guitar tune.
Going in blind here
* Take Your Mama: feels nice and familiar
* 2004? Would not have guessed that.
* Comfortably Numb: horrible
* Mary: better
* Filthy/Gorgeous: enjoyed
* Return to oz: good album closer
Well, I do t think I would come back to this. I didn’t save any songs…but it was a decent album
I have definitely hear a lot of this, but I don’t ever recall listening to this straight through.
* Funeral / love Lies: all over the place in a good way. Piano and some decently ripping guitar.
* Candle in the Wind: perhaps a touch overdone for me at this point. Classic song though.
* Bennie and the Jets: another classic. This one holds up better, IMO. Such a great syncopated beat. Elton’s voice amazing as always.
* Goodbye yellow brick road: third straight classic!
* Next few are fine but forgettable
* Seen that movie: liked the feel of this one
* Sweet painted lady: good not great
* Danny Bailey: enjoyed this one
* Dirty little girl: digging the guitar change of pace. Feels a little skynyrdy, tuesdays gone??? No, I hear a little Curtis Lowe. Loved this. Would love to hear phish cover this.
* Alice: keeping with more guitar…ok.
* Sister twist: meh
* Saturday: fourth classic. Love this song.
* Roy rogers: meh
* Social disease. Decent.
* Harmony: meh
Enjoyed overall. Liked the guitar-driven tunes. Not what I would’ve expected for an Elton John album.
Never heard of this guy
* Water from a vine leaf - is this gonna be like chill electronica? Ok, some spoken word…interesting.
* Into the Paradise - boring and repetitive. I’ve got a bad feeling about the rest of this album
* Well, I will comment if a song actually catches my ear.
* Just so boring. First album I have bailed on I think.
It’s good and I enjoyed it, but it’s not something I would find myself returning to. Highlights
- Lilac wine
- Break down and let it all out
- Wild is the Wind
- If I should lose you
First 30 second reaction: no. Bland watered down alternapunk.
Ball Lightning is the first thing to Carmichael my ear.
Fat Lip: some nice guitar riffs
Suit city: ok
Probably need another listen to beginning. Album getting a bit better.
Misbeaten: I like the beatlesque vocals.
Overall, I do t think I would ever listen to a single song on this album again.
Never heard of this dude. British?
- Seventh seal: I like how this is starting. Ooh, strings.
Next couple not improving
And getting worse…
- Hero of the war: feel like this is the reason this is on the list, god awful though
- again: at least a bit more upbeat
- get behind me: finally a decent rocker
- rhymes of goodbye: ok melody
Picked up a bit toward the end, but overall not some I enjoyed or will return to
First hip-hop album. I expect most of these to not rank all that high for me. Just not my bag. That said, I did have a few other Tribe albums back in the day though I never listened to them all that much.
Can I kick It: dig that velvet underground sample.
Youthful Expression: dig the keys
I think I remember a Beatles sample early on too.
I won’t ever come back to this album but can recognize some of the cool sampling talent and backbeats.
One of my top 15 albums of all time, but probably not higher only because I didn’t want too many Dylan albums up there and have Blood on the Tracks with the slight edge for me.
Best ever song 1? yes, yes, yes
It takes a lot to laugh: absolutely love this track.
Ballad: quintessential Bob. There’s a video out there of him playing this live seated at a piano that is just, incredible. I mean Dylan’s Mr Jones is a pantheon rock character. And perhaps one of my favorite Bob lyrics: “to tax deductible charity organizations” Ha.
Queen Jane: love the rolling piano. And another classic character. Another of my favorite Dylan tunes.
Tom Thumb: great piano, great opening line.
Desolation Row: sigh
Ok, after listening, it’s hard to say this isn’t my favorite Dylan album over BOTT. Guess it depends which I’ve listened to. What’s gonna happen with BoB…or even freewheelin
