It was fun when it came out, but it's pretty dated now. Only 1-2 songs hold up still.
I listened to this twice. It grew on me.
The first 30 seconds of each song I was always like “huh this sounds cool.” Without fail, halfway through I was praying for every song to end. The second star is for the fun beginnings.
A genre I have very little interaction with. However, after ingesting this album in bits, I do think it’s kind of awesome.
This slaps so much.
I’d like to say thanks to this generator for putting this album so soon after The Adverts album. This came out a year after Crossing the Red Sea and it’s infinitely better. More creative and interesting despite both albums being from the same genre “umbrella” from the same time period. You can really tell that Robert Dimery is British based on how many British rock bands show up on this list. I haven’t been doing this generator for long and Brit rock has been the most present by far out of everything. I’d say a good half of these aforementioned British rock albums shouldn’t be on the list too. Regardless, this album was pretty good. I usually hate music like this too- a white guy who isn’t even good at singing, moaning into a microphone out of tune, singing really angsty lyrics despite being fully at the top of the societal food chain. I honestly can’t fully pinpoint why I did actually like this one though. My hunch is that I liked the instrumentalists. The sound was very interesting and well put together.
Honestly more meh than I expected. However, I definitely have a much more holistic view of albums than a lot of people. It takes good musicians, good vocalists, good lyrics, and good songwriting for me to be totally in to something. This album had about 1.5/4 of those things
An album like this runs the risk of making prison seem like a funny good ol' time. However, it's silly when it needs to be and somber at striking moments. "Give My Love to Rose" is perfectly timed for it to be drenched with sympathy and emotion.
This was a really mediocre album. Nothing particularly profound or revolutionary was present. Sounded like a derivative and boring version of better music that was coming out at the same time.
I really loved it; I did. However, in the back of my brain there was something missing.
Wow I hated this so much
I hope there are other albums of his on this list because this is not even close to his best. His self titled debut is so much better and more cohesive. The first part of the album hits you over the head with baroque pop, which I like. I am aware however that it is not a lot of people’s cup of tea. Plus, for songs like “Little Sister” he goes REALLY hard on the classical music angle. His tone of voice can sound a little weird with these songs too because they incorporate so many classical themes. Once Gay Messiah hits it’s a completely different album to an almost jarring extent. Still giving it 4 stars because his other work is so fun and good. Not sure why people were comparing this to Radiohead and Thom Yorke. Beyond a similarity in vocal tone, this is so different.
I was left guessing what the importance of this band and album were. This was pretty bad. The lyrics were crap, the production was crap, and the singing was crap.
