The Birthday Partythis doesn't sound like it came out in the early 80s... i rly enjoyed my time with it! i love how messy it is... i don't often stumble upon songwriting like this. pretty pleasantly surprised

okay for a road trip i guess
hey man that's an okay jazz record. i will listen to it again probably, it actually got me going. - dude who dislikes jazz records as a personality trait
what a comforting record. definitely will be returning to this one!
unique, timeless record. 2009 i miss you
i have no idea why nobody told tracy chapman slapped this hard. she rly knows how to hit wtf
solid one, robert smith band. kinda weird to find out this late into my musical explorations that so much of my guitar playing style is owed to this dude. i thought i was learning from kele & russell bloc party. learned better today
instantly loved this one. pretty healthy amount of contrasts & a particular taste for textures & musical narratives. cool intro to this guy!
weird to listen to this one in full being more familiar with their later work, which pivots more toward... rock opera type sounds. here they're at their most stripped down i've heard them & that's fine, it suits them better imo. the orchestration in their later records rob them of the simplicity that gives this particular record charm imo. that said, there's nothing in particular here that draws me in.
maybe bc i listened to swordfishtrombones first this one didn't hit as hard. what i did get from this one is what justin vernon wishes he sounded like when he shouts! good to know waits was accompanied by pretty fun instrumentation more than once. definitely made me curious to dive deeper into his stuff
going into this always having experienced a particular dislike for every single bowie song i've ever heard i was rly surprised to enjoy the first track on this record. i have been pulled in. i am a sucker for deliberate attempts at pushing songwriting somewhere it hasn't been before & a handful of tracks here are very obviously exactly that. that's commendable. i might just have to change my mind on this dead dude.
why do ppl like the rolling stones. television is right here??? whatever. i was into it at first but as the record dragged on i felt more & more detached from it. it's okay.
gonna be real i am so relieved all of the tracks on this one are under 3mins long. i have no idea why this thing is on this list. all of these songs sound the same. what the fuck
what a gorgeous album. will return to it over & over & over again. thank you for having come down to earth for us, leonard cohen.
positively dripping with personality! & it's not vapid either, it's earnest, focused, fun & concerned with having something to say. p good!
bro, i cannot believe nirvana is among the first 5 stars i give these. grew up thinking these dudes were overrated af bc i only knew their overplayed singles. listening to nevermind now i can't help but feel like we would only have stood to gain if Kurt had managed to hold on a little tighter. on the other hand, that tragedy confirms just how disgustingly predatory the music industry is. nothing has changed. anyway, this record has zero skips for me & it still sounds fresh & necessary today. that's impressive.
didn't rly do much for me if i'm being honest.
not my jam, tho i can give them credit for how innovative this probably was at the time. the lyrics mostly took me out of it but again, i can understand that this is when this type of music was first starting to get some traction. on one hand i wish songwriting like this made a comeback, on the other hand i know songwriting like this still exists & i -don't- listen to it nor seek it out. cool cover!
what a smooth little record. perfect for a monday morning shift, as comforting & warm as cupping a freshly brewed cup of matcha tea. p sweet!
my favorite country record i've ever heard. it immediately made me think of my favorite band pinegrove & i can hear they drink so much of their influences from this... just a joy to listen to. will be returning to it no doubt!
not one of my fav michael jackson albums. it's the first time i listen to this entire thing in order & i rly can't say any of the tracks on this stick with me... which i am a bit disappointed by. definitely not one i'll return to voluntarily i think
i can appreciate the technical skill going into this, there's just nothing else for me personally to draw from it
comfy record. unlikely to return to it bc it's not my jam but i was surprised by how much i ended up liking it... maybe. maybe i might come back to it. well, whatever, at least i listened to it all the way thru, that's more than i can say for a handful of these at this point
this doesn't sound like it came out in the early 80s... i rly enjoyed my time with it! i love how messy it is... i don't often stumble upon songwriting like this. pretty pleasantly surprised
babe wake up it's 1-4-5 the record for the millionth time </3
kendrick sample source record that i need to sink my teeth deeper into. will come back to it for sure...
exactly what i needed to listen to when i needed it most. blessed selection of tracks, i'll be returning to this one over & over again <3
no <3
good album to put on in the background when you have friends over & don't want to put anything on that would make anyone complain. been looking for these!
ugh, jazz. whatever.
wow, this one just sailed right thru me. i know it's his last record & i rly vibed with it, i just can't forget the fact he fucked teenagers at his peak! & never will! so 4 stars is all you get, david
second track of this album kicks like spread eagle across the block i can hear how pivotal this record was to one of the most important acts of my life (& contemporary music if we're being honest). flows are a little dated but the energy more than makes up for it, v glad this is on this list
i have no idea what to make of this one bc i've listened to it in so many different contexts... it sounds exactly like its cover. a sunny, summery afternoon in the shade in the company of friends & refreshing drinks... reminds me of my 20s. bye
bit budget tracy chapman aren't we. or maybe the other way around? anyway they both have a vocal texture that instantly makes me feel like i'm in the early 90s again... i also like how playful this can sometimes be. unsure i'll return to it but i'm p content with it
god, what an insufferable record. i can appreciate that the beatles are expanding their sound palate in this one & sure, i know historically speaking this record was some kind of sound engineering marvel or whatever. it does sound particular & the songwriting isn't entirely boring. however! there is much more interesting music made by their contemporaries. i will also admit this does not sound like it was written in 69 (nice) but like. i've also been saying that about a lot of other records on this list... so maybe i just have a rly warped, ignorant idea of what the 60s sounded like musically! whatever. 3 stars. fuck off.
the comfiest i've ever felt in a country record. burrowed angel murdered me.
justin timberlake's best album due to a fortunate combination of rly talented producers & timing. makes it extremely funny how bad his latest stuff is lol
i've recently listened to this in full & so i will not be giving it another listen this time. i didn't like this album at first & it's grown on me. i'm glad for the fact it brought kendrick to a broader audience & at the same time there's still something about it that doesn't quite connect with me... solid stuff tho
by far my favorite & the most listenable sonic youth record. i'm glad they made the decision to apply their texture work to a pop structure, it's an illuminated stroke of genius. hey joni's harmonics sections are galvanizing & the entire record is just filled with an unstoppable restlessness. fantastic pre-weekend build-up material!
