I enjoy the way this album is able to recontextualize covers. It makes me wish I had a stronger appreciation for the originals.
Give my love to rose and Bridge over Troubled Water made me cry at 10am so thats pretty cool
Meh. Nostalgic, and I could see it was occasionally crunchy / more than just straightforward rock, but not handsome enough to tempt me
fun! reminded me of Eloise. Musically a nice mix of jazz / neo-soul that feels accessible -- really great to listen to. Lyrically, often snarky and judgemental.
October Song was esp fun, I like lullaby of birdland
Such a great album. ofc the tracks I love continue to be amazing, but I was kinda shocked by how great some of the other tracks like Hood Politics and i are. One of those albums that's just so cohesive and strong as a unit.
Musically, I think this is supposed to be adventurous (incorporating reggae / experimental elements) but it just doesn't feel like that in 2024.
Lyrically, I wasnt a fan -- anti-establishment in the most literal, obvious way, and lacking humanity imo.
I kind of liked it. This entire process is making me realize how much vocal mixing / balance matters to me -- the vocals are obviously the main thing here, but I don't really particularly love them. The band sounds amazing but they're constantly covered
I actually really enjoyed this. Experimental in a very tasteful way, almost whimsical. Hard to keep myself from hopping along
didn't do much for me. good piano playing but felt kind of kitschily classical almost. I think I'd definitely like it more on a relisten though
I liked it! more rhythmically interesting than London Calling IMO. it's definitely a product of its time
It was good! reminded me a lot of Haley Heynderickx, but less narrative + my psychedelic (maybe that just means it's folk). Id relisten to the albums
Definitely a bop, but wasn't incredibly engaging / interesting
Yeah it's good, but not super amazing
this was more like a 4.5, I really enjoyed it + I'd listen to it unprompted, if the mood was right. I felt at times like I was listening to a Lorde album though I couldnt really express why. Her voice also grew on me a lot
boooo it's better than regular Christmas music but that's a low bar
good but not life-changing beep boop music. I wonder if my understanding of this music as whimsical comes from the fact that the sounds are so funny
I think I have to re listen later. some really fun songs (Heroes, Beauty and the Beast) but mostly mid
for me this was all about the lyrics. the music is beautiful but in a way that feels distinctly secondary to the lyrically content -- almost like it's poetry with accompaniment.
the lyrics are great though so
Feels too much like easy listening lounge music for my taste (which I guess is kinda her background). Similar to the lyrics -- felt very generically lounge-y.
Her voice is beautiful though
Really good, everything on the album was this interesting prog-y thing but very accessible and fun to listen to.
I need to meditate more on why I have a hard time with electronic music like this. one thought is, if you look at what timescales the melody/harmony repeats, most of the variance in the song is explained by these loud, repetitive, short cycles, and very little changes between cycles.
Im also sometimes willing to give bands like this a pass if their sound design is unusual or interesting. I found most of the synths here grating.
Pretty great! Actually feels like Indie Pop -- definitely accessible and uses rock textures, but has some fun imagery and this fun almost macabre aesthetic. and isnt afraid of dissonance
It sounds like Talking Heads. Im definitely happy to listen to it, but it didn't particularly excite me. though I will say, the lyrical content is more fun than I expected based on the hits
FJM but less abstract and sterile. Loved some of the punchy lyrics e.g. "pop and rocks and cyanide". Also enjoyed thinking about the way it processes anger and how it interacts with gender
This album is insufferable for reasons Im not sure I completely understand. It feels like "world music" but done in a kind of white savior-ish way. But maybe I'm just primed to think things like this are problematic -- apparently it did bring hip-hop to new audiences in Britain, which is great
