Popular Reviews

The album kinda flew by and felt like it was over sooner than I expected - I wonder if the audience at the performance felt the same way. But hey, if I have a choice between some James Brown and no James Brown, I will take the some.

While not necessarily my kind of thing (although a younger me ould appreciate how aggressive it is much more), you can certainly why it had so much influence on the genre.

good kid, m.A.A.d city by Kendrick Lamar

Skillfully made but this album doesn't really vibe with me for the most part. The Art of Peer Pressure and Money Trees were chef's kiss, though!

I kinda look forward to playing this in the background as I'm working on dinner in the evening of a long hot day. Very chill! El cuarto de Tula and Candela were particularly my vibe - I'll need to look up the translation of the lyrics sometime.

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
May 09 2025

A lovely album. I liked every single track - though some more than others. It's certainly going into my regular rotation. I particularly enjoyed Runaway Child, Running Wild.

Guero by Beck
May 10 2025

I was interrupted partway through the elbum and honestly dreaded going back to finish it. There are a few tracks that were alright, but overall this whole album felt to me as a disjointed, chaotic and aimless mess of disparate songs, half of which felt like lacking any semblance of heart whatsoever. Maybe it's just not my vibe or I didn't get some overarching ideas to the album that would have made it worth it. I made it through, but this was very much not for me.

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin

I wasn't really feeling in the mood for Led Zep but as I reached the third song, I was still hella into the album and really enjoying the groove. I think that says a lot.

The Last Of The True Believers by Nanci Griffith
May 12 2025

You know you're in for a treat when the first song of an album makes you want to sing along, even though it's the first time you've ever heard it. Sure, it's country - twangy, plenty of fiddle - with a woman singing - sweet, of course, though not *quite* saccharine. But the vocals are powerful, and instrumentals work together just *so*, and the storytelling in the songs is great. On top of that, the songs just flow from one to another with impeccable smoothness. A joy to listen to. Even if you're not a fan of the genre, it should be clear a lot of thought and heart went into the album, and that's something worth appreciating.

Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
May 13 2025

A decent album. The first song made me teary eyed. The second one made me laugh. The last one was touching. In between that the rest kinda blurred in a way that a less kind reviewer would call same-y and I would call consistent. Genuine skill and feeling and heart shine throughout, either way.

Queen Of Denmark by John Grant
May 14 2025

I couldn't finish this particular album. Somehow it manages to have a lot going on while boring me to tears. I can tell that there's a ot of personal stuff going into it but somehow the music just doesn't make me care. I stopped at the song that had "you better fuck off, better leave me alone" in the chorus. After hearing that said for the third time I just thought: "You know what? I think I will."

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
May 16 2025

This album was not quite what I expected from it, but not in a bad way. It's solid and I only wish I had been more in the mood for this kind of sound today - but even that doesn't detract from the virtues of the album. I can certainly see myself enjoying it more on another day

This was my first encounter with Lambchop. It was... pleasant but fairly forgettable. I found the singer's voice comforting, though.

May 20 2025

I never quite got the hype around Nirvana. Sure, some songs are good, but then there are some outright dogshit ones too. This album is not an exception.

Morrison Hotel by The Doors

An excellent album. I especially liked the first and the last track, they ended up working as a sort of bookends for me.

A Seat at the Table by Solange
May 30 2025

One of those albums where I hate to rate them low because the artist is competent and clearly put in the effort... But the end result just doesn't speak to me. If I go through the album feeling bored and just wanting it to be over already, well, it clearly isn't for me.

So much energy and heart! There's no nuance or subtlety, of course, but you don't always need them, especially with rock and roll!
