Scott 4
Scott WalkerKinda boring, couldn't get through it. The main single was ok. 2/5

Recognize how important this album is. Enjoyed listening but not sure Iโll come back to it. All my memories of this are from white kids listening to it at summer camp, trying to seem cool. Surprised by Express yourself. Also like the beats on the last track.
Itโs not background music
Other than roadhouse blues I hadnโt heard much of this album before. I went through a big classic rock phase in middle school and used to love The Doors, but I had never explored them beyond the hits. So this was fun. I dont think this album is one of their best but still some great songs. Feels less experimental and more blues-y/americana than I remember. Waiting for the sun is my favorite new find. Still love roadhouse blues.
Canโt believe this came out in 1978. I imagine this is what Bill Gates listened to as he was coding Microsoft. This album spawned multiple genres and was the foundation for so much of electronic music, like synthpop and techno. I hadnโt listened to this in its entirety before. Will be coming back to this a lot. Loved The Model (esp the German version) and Neon Lights especially.
Enjoyed the listen but nothing immediately hooked me. Maybe will grow over time. Solsbury Hill is awesome though
I went on a long wikipedia rabbit hole today about Tango & specifically the Nuevo Tango style that Piazzolla started. That's why I love doing this challenge -- why else would I spend a whole day listening to tango?! I enjoyed this album - I think Operation Tango is my favorite. That said not sure I'll be coming back to this a lot. I did enjoy some of the other top songs on Piazzolla's spotify.
Loved this one! Could be 5/5 with more time. Album got better with each listen
Really enjoyed this! Hadnโt listened to QOTSA since middle school and only knew their later album. Loved the heavy textures on this one, will be coming back to this
Apparently this album is famous for popularizing CDs. Enjoyed the listen, some songs like Money for Nothing had really epic theatrical moments. But quality felt inconsistent and uneven.
Basically invented both punk rock and new wave. Inspiration to many. Hadn't listened to this before, but will be coming back to this more.
In middle school I remember trying to find music that sounded like real Rock Music. As in music created by โrock starsโ. The music my parents listened to (Beatles, Neil Young, etc) didnโt sound like that. Then I found Van Halen (and Motley Crue and KISS and the hair metal scene). I had finally found it.
Didnโt like this at first but grew on me the more I listened. Like the band ensemble at the end of Fistful of Love. Too much vibrato though.
Might have the best song about Minnesota? Like their later album more. A lot of this was filler but I did enjoy a couple songs on this.
Reminds me a lot of LCD Soundsystem. Was fun dancing to Life during wartime. Wanted to like this more than I did
This one didnโt do it for me. Sounded like Tony Hawk background music. AC/DC knockoff. I liked the Cultโs earlier albums when they were more punk/goth. This album sounded like they were trying too hard to appeal to mainstream American audiences. Boring
Itโd feel wrong to rate this any lower. Heโs a genius. And he was only 22! Songs all feel timeless, every listen is rewarding. One of those albums to be stuck on a desert island with.
I'd be happy if it was Beach Boys day every day on this site... pure bliss. I didn't know many of the songs on this album aside from Dance, Dance, Dance and Help me Rhonda. Favorite song: Do You Wanna Dance?
TIL Fela married 27 women on the same day. The bassline on Egbe Mi O will be stuck in my head for a while
Fun fact: Chic has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 11 times, they are the most nominated act in history to not get inducted. Loved this, letโs bring disco back!
This is the first album weโve had that Iโve actually listened to in its entirety before! Many times actually. 2008 was the peak of my Pitchfork/NME/music blog days and is when my taste in music really crystallized. Remember listening to this on my iPod. TV on the Radio is one of those defining high school bands for me. Listening to this album right after seeing Bloc Party live made me really nostalgic for the 2000s indie scene (passion pit, klaxons, tapes n tapes, two door cinema club) That said I was a bit surprised to see this album on the list -- it's personally meaningful for me but not sure this is the right album to represent that scene.
Enjoyed this! Nice break from the usual 70s/80s rock. Nas is really talented and one of the greats. Iโm sure I would have loved if I discovered at a younger age, feels hard to get into now though.
I liked The Sound of Someone You Love but found the album as a whole quite hard to listen to. Tried it a couple times and just couldnโt really get into it. But my favorite discovery is finding Perpetuum Mobile (on a later album). This is not only a great, really rhythmically interesting song in its own right, but it was sampled as the main hook on Aviciiโs Fade Into Darkness. Love finding these connections.
Thought this album ended in a very different place from where it started. Enjoyed a couple songs: Not Even Stevie Nicks, Gรผero Canelo. The mariachi was interesting but sometimes felt tacked on.
Appreciate that sheโs an icon and enjoyed the vibe of this album. Work It is great. There were a few others I liked but overall not my thing
Gave this a quick listen. Enjoyed it! Excited to see him at OSL
Thought this was a real chore to listen to.. very repetitive, couldn't get into it.
Probably one of the best debut albums in history? So many hits. Free Solo was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. Tuesday's Gone is iconic. The whole album feels tight.
Loved it! Want to spend more time with this one. Wasn't too familiar with him before listening. He has an amazing voice and didn't feel repetitive like many other similar albums.
Only listened to this once through but found the end of it quite self indulgent and hard to listen to.
Iโm open to heavy metal but this didnโt do it for me. Was fun going on a Wikipedia deep dive on heavy metal sub genres though. This album is more thrash metal than black metal, despite the album title.
Listened to this on plane. Fun listen, donโt think Iโll be coming back often though. Later stuff is better
The highs are high, but the lows are.. mediocre on this one. Had never listened to this before but it's clear she's influenced many artists I love today (Carly Rae!). But I thought the album was inconsistent. Maybe it needs more listens.
Ugh this album is so good. Coldplay def has a stigma associated with it given how "mainstream" it was in its time. But the album aged really well, the songs don't feel tired at all. I bet people will "rediscover" this as time goes on. I want it to be cool to like Coldplay again!
Holy shit. This is sublime, life-affirming. Each one of these songs is an entirely new sound universe. It's experimental yet very catchy and addicting. Some faves: St. Elmo's Fire - it's basically a pop song? love the frantic vibes + awesome guitar solo The Big Ship - epic build-up, the ultimate pump-up song. makes me want to go on an adventure and do epic shit Becalmed - ethereal, other-worldly synths. Tranquil, everything is going to be okay. Will def be coming back to this over and over again, so much to explore!
Iโm a Prince novice, had only listened to the singles before. But this album showcases Princeโs range and his ability to transcend genre. Really enjoyed this and itโs one of those albums I need to spend a lot more time with.
Iconic (but overplayed) singles, production is really great. But I donโt have an emotional connection with it.
Harry Nilsson is the American Beatle! So many good songs on this, maybe one of the most underrated artists? Glad this site introduced me to him.
Is it folk? Rock? Blues? IDK but i'm bored
Layla is iconic, used to love playing this on guitar. Didn't get a chance to listen to this more than once today but overall I had a fun time.
This album is so good. Could get to 5/5 with more listens. This influenced so much of the indie/alternative rock I love - Nirvana, The Strokes, so more. Grows on me with each listen. Current fave is River Euphrates. Where Is My Mind? is obviously a classic.
Surprised by how much I liked this. Learned about northern soul and how this band was inspired by that. Fun album!
I was originally 2 stars but giving it an extra star for the album cover. I enjoyed Tarkus but that's all this album really had to offer. Very uneven.
Makes me nostalgic for my middle school heavy metal phase. Doesn't hold up much for me though
Just because an album's full of bleeps and bloops doesn't mean I'll automatically like it! Thought this was mediocre and uninspired. No song was emotionally inspiring. This may have been the beginning of progressive house but it's really come a looong way since Leftfield as to become almost unrecognizable. But still giving it a 3 to boost the average group rating since I imagine this will get 1s and 2s :)
Really loved this. Anything that gets me dancing around the house is a 5/5. Perfect blend of new wave and pop. Feels timeless. Fave song: How Much More TIL: they are the first (and still the only!) all female band that wrote their own songs to reach the top of the charts
The Machine is actually good so instead of raging against it, they should find something more productive to do.
Australian alt-indie pop from the 80s? What's not to love! Catchy pop singles + moving ballads. Loved the soaring guitar at the end of Was There Anything I Could Do.
Pleasant listen, enjoyed Chan Chan
Iconic, timeless, innovative album. One day I hope to listen to this in reverse to get the full experience.
Reminds me a lot of LCD Soundsystem - one of my favorites. Genre-defying. Wish I had more time to spend with this album.
