Nothing's Shocking
Jane's AddictionSounds like my brother’s room when I walked down the hallway in 1996. Great grunge, with some melodic elements that remind me of Led Zeppelin. Favorite track is “Up the Beach”.

I love this style of storytelling folk songs. These all seem like lullabies. The incorporation of traditional Christian hymns further grounds this in Texas culture. I feel like i learned something about the fabric of central Texas
Two Willie albums in a row? Dang, how many Willie albums are in this 1001 collection? This is a great melodic album full of more lullabies. I wished for more folk-song-storytelling like on red headed stranger. This album made me realize what a player Willie is/was lol. Pretty album and enjoyable to listen to, but not a lot of variety.
Hell yeah, this is exactly what I was hoping to get out of this project. I’ve never heard of this band, and this is a great album. I love the random funk track and the threat to the queen using Scarborough fair.
This album is very far out of my comfort zone, and I can see why it is so iconic. I heard a lot of these motifs in popular 90s media. My favorite thing about this album is the storytelling. I'm glad I had a reason to listen to this from start to finish. However, the imagery is pretty gross for me personally, so I won't be returning to it.
I had no idea this album was so old?! I always associate Rage Against the Machine with the early 00s. I really needed to hear an album like this in the politically cursed year of 2025. I love all the unashamed activism and calling out of very specific injustices. Great music for workout, protest, crashout, etc. Iconic sound, but the songs get pretty repetitive. Mainly walking away with: "Why stand on a silent platform? Fight the war, fuck the norm." and "Mindset is a threat".
Damn, he's dropping the N word in the first song, huh? This is wild to listen to the day after listening to Rage Against the Machine because I feel like Rage is empowering (and has a meaningful political message) where as Manson is just obnoxiously cynical and angry. "Angry boy music", as a friend of mine calls it. Lyrics aside, the sound is pretty fun. Lots of variety of sounds between "deformography" and "cryptorchid". I could see myself screaming to "tourniquet" in the car. I also liked this a lot more after learning that is was a concept rock opera album.
Hell yeah, I LOVE soul and blues. In reading about this album, I learned that Redding was backed by the Stax label house band- Booker T. & the M.G.'s! This album slaps, I love it start to finish.
I already love Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, and until now, I've never had the pleasure of listening to One Nation Under A Groove from start to finish. Great funk tracks, and a surprising amount of experimental spoken word, extended instrumentals, and surreal humor. Now I want to watch a documentary about George Clinton.
I was really dreading this one when it popped up, but I was surprised to pick up on all the excellent blues and funk motifs. By the time i finished “Under the Bridge”, I was genuinely impressed with the musicality. Good job, RHCP. (And good job Rick Ruben! Unexpected side effect of this project is learning about music producers.) Good enough album, but I’m so tired of gross horny boy songs.
In spite of the depressing subject matter (or maybe because of it?), this is a truly gorgeous album. I love the whiplash from hard industrial rock to techno to soft instrumental. Great range, incredible soundscapes. I'm so glad that Trent Reznor did not give in to his suicidal ideations, because he continues to give us beautiful music to this day with his stunning soundtrack career.
I have never even heard of Solange before this, and thank goodness that has now been corrected. Gorgeous vocals and lyrics. I love how many songs are prefaced by spoken wisdom from her parents. Lovely declaration of pride and resilience.
Didn't know this is who wrote "Cult of Personality"! What a great rock band. Some of the tight vocal harmonies remind me of my favorite band, Queen. The themes of each song are clever, especially the aforementioned track and the "open letter". Of course, the music itself is badass. Love the heavy influence of blues, metal, early hip-hop, and funk. And "Funny Vibe" is wild! No base like 80s base. Great album.
"The title derives from the colloquialism "plastic soul" and was the Beatles' way of acknowledging their lack of authenticity compared to the African-American soul artists they admired." - Fascinating. So this album was a kind of pursuit of authenticity as the Beatles' style developed. Gorgeous, classic album. Not much to say that hasn't been said.
Incredible, so hype that I got this album today. Dreamy, melodic, gorgeous.
Such a fun album. I really enjoy Lorde's songwriting and signature vocals. Pop is a bit out of my comfort zone, so I could feel myself grating against an occasional poppy motif. Overall, excellent.
Great lyrics, iconic sound. I didn't realize how old this album was. The sound doesn't gel with my personal taste, but the lyrics are reminding me to fight the good fight.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! Easy on the ears, legendary musicians. Love an all-instrumental album.
I love Chris Cornell's vocal's because they are really easy and fun to sing along with. I think I would have loved this album in high school. It is the encapsulation of 90s grunge metal. Black Hole Sun is the crown jewel of the album, stunning. Only giving a lower rating because of the lack a variety.
This is like a bridge from 70s music to 80s music. So cool!
This album is INSANE. It swings wildly from pop to acoustic, blues to folk, classic rock to experimental. Such great range and BIZARRE sense of humor. "Wild Honey Pie"?? "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Moneky"?????? Don't even get me started on "Revolution 9", I love when crazy stuff like that is peppered into an album. Wow, it's bonkers, and I love it.
To me, this album is peak spirit of adolescent boys. It's fun, loud, and rowdy. Great to listen to while in the gym. Love the storytelling in the songs, and the way samples and motifs weave throughout the album.
Banger after certified banger. LOVE this album!!!
Before I get into the music- why is the album cover of a white lady? Aside from that, great album. Can't believe how long it is. Gershwin and Ella Fitzgerald and wildly prolific.
My parents have sung several of these songs to me, so I think this was very important listening. Great storytelling, great vocals.
I've only ever heard "no one knows". I love that song, so this album was a treat. I appreciate the long instrumental sections. Great buzzy grunge sound.
I was not expecting the "Changes" cover! Followed by a fascinating experimental piece in "FX". Wow, I have a newfound respect for Black Sabbath.
This album is SO weird! Psychedelic rock combined with Louisiana cajun folklore. I love the storytelling and moodiness. There is a whole song just making sounds of the bayou. It feels so unique and fresh, even by today's standards. What a treat!
This album is an insane powerhouse of 90s RnB. I was shocked at how many songs I knew, though I couldn't tell you who Ms. Hill was before this! I adore her rich alto voice and the mix of rap and harmonies. Fascinating storytelling, too. The classroom bits imply that Hill missed the day in class where they talk about love. Such a cool album- I really enjoyed this.
I love soul, and I was previously unfamiliar with Solomon Burke! Gorgeous ballads- I especially enjoyed "You're Good for Me".
Classic rock sledgehammer. Very powerful.
We love a triumphant concept album forged in the fires of outside pressures to do commercial material!! snap snap snap, great album!
First thing Hays said when they heard this was, "what sitcom is this from?" This album sounds like it had a huge influence on culture at large. 1977 version of chill beats to study and relax to. Very cool and easy to listen to. Loved it!
Pretty good Beck album! I didn't finish it, so I need to revisit.
My brother played this album into the GROUND! It feels very nostalgic, reminds me of flipping through his CD book. This album has a great variety. I adore the mix of gritty grunge rock and melodic orchestra. I hadn't listened to this as an adult, so I paid more attention to the lyrics. Will be visiting this one again.
Never heard any of this music before! Great album, sounds very edgy for 1970. Would like to listen to it again and pay closer attention to the lyrics.
Psychedelic folk! This is a thing?! What a trip. It's giving Ren Faire. I feel like this is speaking to me from a much older place than 1968, and it's speaking to my scottish roots. Cool, bizarre album. It's wild stuff like this that makes me love the 1001 album project.
Classic! So glad to get a reggae album in the mix. This is beautiful and very chill.
Hot damn, this album goes. This feels like the definition of rock.
