Influence is apparent on future artists.... but those future artists perfected this sound alot better. Cant say this was a great 1st album for my 1001+ albums journey but at least there's 1000 more!
Very Groovy, and the instrumentation is well done. Not my cup of tea, but a very respectable bluesy southern rock album.
"Waitin' for the Bus" & "Jesus just left Chicago" are solid finds for me on this album. Admittedly, probably will only spin "La Grange" consistently.
3/5
Appreciate this album and its historical importance. Songwriting masterclass, and a great folk album, and dare i say, a great harmonica album. Good for what it was.
3/5
Not necessarily the most fond of this album, like other Zeppelin records. However, their standard of greatness is as high as any of the greatest bands ever, which objectively, I believe they deserve to be in that conversation. So a less than stellar Zeppelin record, is still a damn good record.
Yes, 1,2,4 are in my opinion, better, which seems to be a popular opinion, but that's for a reason. Those 3 are peak Rock music. This lags just behind.
4/5
Twisted, Batshit insane and dark themes. But you cant deny the lyricism, story-telling and the rap ability of Eminem (at least before he started releasing dumb shit like "just lose it").
4/5
When Paul McCartney said this was one of the 3 best albums he ever listened to, I came into this with HUGE expectations. And i've gotta say, Paul, if you told me Rebecca Black was a generational Female vocalist, i'd believe you. Some people you just dont question their musical opinions.
However, in this case. I think me and Paul just have different tastes (hence why he's a musical icon and im here writing reviews lol). I like the instrumentation on this album, and this guy is a cool vocalist to listen to. But i cant ever see myself revisting this album routinely, other than "The Weight"
3/5
Even without the context of this being one of the last Kurt Cobain performances we'd ever get. This is one of the greatest live albums of all time. Its up for debate between this, James Brown at the Apollo, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, The Who at Leeds, and MC5's Kick out the jams. What's not for debate however, is that this forever cemented Kurt as the voice of a generation. Not a voice of a genre that rose, fell and nearly died in a 3 year span.
The way this band almost gives these rock songs a new layer of awesomeness and depth with the accoustic setting, is a bar that is almost impossible to reach for future artists (especially in rock). No questions, no debates. This is a 5/5 album
This is the 2nd Bob Dylan Album i've reviewed so far, which is wild considering that i'm only on album 8... almost like the universe telling me that I should be listening to more Bob Dylan... similarly to the last one i reviewed (freewheelin'), This album does everything right musically and lyrically..... but i dont know, Bob Dylan just isn't my taste. Maybe its just the folk genre. I will say, I do believe this is truly required listening for a music appreciator. Just not something i will ever return to consistently. 3/5
The whole idea of this 1001 Album Project was that i was eventually going to find an album that was completely out of my comfort zone in some way. As a mainly Rock fan, i've dabbled in stuff that was a little bit out of my comfort zone. I can confidently say, this was an absolute nose dive out of my comfort zone.... Almost akin to a fat kid eating a grilled chicken Caesar salad.
And im not going to lie, i didnt have any interest in this at all. 1/5
Love a good guitar album. And this absolutely is it. Raw, which is to be expected for a debuting Dire Straits, whilst not my absolute go-to band for this type of music, I absolutely appreciate them.
4/5
I almost believe this site is watching my every move. This is album #11 of my 1001+ album journey. Of the first 3, Fred Neil's record, and TWO Bob Dylan Albums.... its like they want me to fall in love with folk music. One of those was Blood on the tracks.
Ironically, Pitchfork cited that "Blue is like a companion to Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks—a confessional album very much of its time that endures on the strength of fantastic melodies and musical simplicity."
It's as if fate wanted me to listen to this.
Well jokes on them, I've listened to this numerous times. Just thought this was a funny story to tell. Most obvious 5/5 album of all time
Perfectly understand how there could be lovers and 5/5s for this album, i absolutely love the sound.... For some reason it really just didnt click for me on my first listen, could very easily revisit and think otherwise.
3/5
Can I rate things 0/5? listeners must've been STARVING for good music if this shit was getting critically acclaimed reviews in 1998.... but im glad people woke up from that hysteria.....
1/5 only until they give me the option for 0/5
Knew of suede mostly for their self titled debut album. So when I finally gave this a run, an album widely thought to be a BETTER follow up, I was excited. And you know what? It delivered. Although I was pretty surprised how different it was for an album released a year after their self titled. But nevertheless 4/5
RIP Johnny Cash you damn legend. A Musical savant till the damn day you died. Hurt gets the most credit, and deservedly so, one of the most transformative covers of all time. But man, I love the Personal Jesus cover as well. Eagles and Fiona Apple also helping with this album? What is there not to love about this. 5/5
Gotta be honest.... I didn't really care for this one bit. I like her voice, but I forgot I was listening to music half the time..
Objectively, this album is probably 4/5. But for me, this was one of the albums that helped me get into alternative rock sound that is undoubtedly my favorite. I've always much preferred Albarn in Blur as opposed to Gorillaz. Cant say the same about ALLLLLLLLLLL THE PEOPLLLLLLLLLLE. But this is a 5/5 for me.
I have only really ever heard their biggest hits, but I have always heard about how they were HUGE across the pond, never got around to listening to them until now. Obviously "Our House" is a big time hit. I absolutely get their appeal, but I'm not the biggest fan of New Wave, at least this iteration. 3/5
of all U2 Albums, the consensus is that this was their magnum opus, U2 At theri absolute best. Whilst im not neccessarily the BIGGEST fan of this one,(Not from a "they sold out" stance like some people seem to hold), I appreciate this album, as it was good sense of the direction Alternative was going in the 90s (amidst the chaos of that small band in Seattle).
4/5. (probably a 5/5 but that Songs of Innocence stunt was unforgiveable ngl, unfair or not.)
Never got around to this album until now, hence why i started doing this. And i've gotta say, this album is so far ahead of its time. I love it. 4/5
admittedly, never went too far into the kinks discography, but i knew the big songs on this album. But i fell in love with other tracks that i havent heard. This album feels so far ahead of its team, and holds up very well.
This is absolutely required listening for any music fan. This was an awesome snapshot in time of what was a thriving Jazz scene, and it absolutely still holds up today. Whilst not the biggest jazz fan, this is undeniable.
The album i was recommended before this, was "The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady". To go from that, to a full on Jazz pop (??) was definitely a trip. Cant say i have ever been introduced or gone out of my way to listen to "sophisti-pop" but here we are. It almost feels like a love-letter to new wave and Jazz-infused pop, and truthfully, i appreciate it for what it is.
Cant go wrong with this album. Absolutely one of the best debuts of all time. When they say it should just be their greatest hits album, its for a reason. Endless replay value. 4/5
I appreciate Mudhoney, I wouldnt neccesarily say this is their best, but i wouldnt say its great. I think the author of this project just really wanted us to listen to other grunge projects outside of the big 4.
Everyone talks about Remain in Light when this band comes up, and deservedly so. When that album comes i'll rate it 5/5. But i've gott say, I revisit songs on this album alot more frequently. While i can acknowledge it being slightly worse, it has a special place in my heart. 4/5
yeah.... i get it, 1001 albums, its supposed to be diverse and enhance your view on music.... this just makes me wish another album was recommended and i can get my 50 minutes back
There is not a doubt in my mind, this is a 5/5 record. not a 5/5 rap record, not a 5/5 90s record, a 5/5 record point blank period. One of the best albums of all time, and a genuine argument for best rap album of all time. People will argue, Nas isn't the most entertaining. I will counter it by telling those people that they are absolutely braindead. Peak lyricism, production and MC ability. Can i rate 6 stars?
Separating the art from the artist, I can appreciate this for being all around great, and deservedly revered as a great relic for folk rock.
