What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said. It was the voice of gen-x before gen-x was even named. Everybody had this album and you'd hear 'Smells Like Teen Spirmit' everywhere. Felt like the start of something special at the beginning of the 90s.
Its not an album I'd usually listen to at all, and I feel that Kanye, as a person, is not a person I'd like to be around, so I tried to put that aside & listened without prejudice and just hear the music. Well, surprisingly I really enjoyed it. Overblown & all massively over-produced but some tracks really stood out for me. Power and All Of The Lights grabbed me right away Runaway is musically fantastic and sounds amazing. Many tracks I loved just for the music, arrangement and layers of production . Not really sure how it can be a Kanye West album when songs have so many vocalists and writers (20 songwriters credited on Power alone! but it wasn't half bad.
Had one half-decent genx song back in the 90s with Loser. He was overrated then but more overrated (and irrelevant) now.
I've tried many many times over the years to get into Beck but honestly, this album is another example of forgettable mess. Stick down a riff... repeat it for the whole song... drone vocals over the top. Broken Drum is the best track... cos it doesn't sound like Beck.
I didn't realise I knew the first few tracks from the radio. I think they're supposed to be New Wave but overall the album was very listenable but also a bit boring. Some good tracks but nothing dynamic for me. Vocals reminded me of David Byrne and generally they sound like a bland Talking Heads. But not bad.
I know this album quite well because we have it on CD but I've not listened to it for years. Good to hear with fresh ears. Heartbreaking emotional songs and that beautiful voice. Only a couple of forgetable filler tracks in the middle.
I really struggle to enjoy country and western. Buy if I was a fan .... I guess this album would be fantastic. I liked the stripped back arrangement and Willy's voice is 100% genuine. He's great, I just wasn't keen on the vibe.
It must have come as a huge shock to hear this in the mid 60s. The birth of punk rock. I get how influential this album was but for me it became a bit samey in the 2nd half.
Loved the Doors-inspired organ and the dirty distorted guitar though.
It didn't grab me as I'd hoped. Lyrically beautiful though. The collaborations with Thom Yorke worked really well and The Hustlers Whore was a standout track.
Sabbath at (probably) the top of their game. Still the raw heaviness of the first 3 albums but with added polish & production I guess. Laguna Sunrise is a beautiful acoustic guitar breather in the middle of the madness.
One of the first albums I ever heard in full. My sister had this on vinyl and we heard it all through the house over & over.
It's the perfect album for me. It was the soundtrack to the UK heading into a new decade. The 90s were amazing.
So many bands in the 90s copied their sound but the Stone Roses were the first and best.
I will play this to my kids to deter them from ever taking drugs. I wanted it to end so badly it pained me. Like a really bad trip man. Someone spiked my tea.
