1001 Albums Summary

Fun angry shouty stuff and some pretty funky songs. I didn't know the Beastie Boys were doing all that.

I'll admit to an anti-Radiohead bias on account of their politics and general obnoxiousness, but even then I was expecting to like this album more than I did. I haven't listened to much Radiohead in years but I remember liking a lot of the songs on OK Computer, and Kid A was also good (if a little inferior). But In Rainbows is mostly a bland drudge through samey sounding songs with few highlights.

Listened to this one plenty over the years. Lives up to its reputation as an amazing and fun album with lots of variety that doesn't dip in quality. Spanish Bombs might be my favourite off the album but it's all great.

I already liked Good Feeling – I knew it from himym. I'd then listened to Blister in the Sun which I vaguely recognised, and I liked it, then really disliked it, and now listening to it again I think it's ok? This album feels ahead of its time being from 1983 meaning it's probably influenced many other artists, unfortunately. This style of music and the way he sings is not for me at all but Good Feeling is a decent song. The xylophone or whatever on Gone Daddy Gone is also nice.

There isn't much to say about MJ that hasn't been said already. I've heard all the songs before (except The Lady in My Life) but this is the first time I've listened to it as an album. Putting three of the greatest pop songs ever written next to each other is bold. But I don't want to know anything about the production of this album. It existed before I was born and it feels like it exists out of time and space. It's a history defining album. That isn't a compliment; the album could've been shit. But it isn't.

Not familiar with Alanis Morissette at all -- I think this is a great album. Some weaker songs but the highs are really high.

Obviously an all time classic.

You could imagine any of these songs on the Goodfellas soundtrack. Mostly just fine with I Really Don't Wanna Know being particularly good.

Solid but not really that interesting

I thought Van Morrison was a heavy metal band or something. Guess I got mixed up with Van Halen. Anyway this is pretty good.

Listening to this felt sort of unpleasant, like I was trapped inside a washing machine. Maybe that's the point, I don't know. Every song sounds identical and some of them go on for so long. It feels like background music for a film or video game, and maybe in those contexts I would like it more. That's not to say I hated listening to this. I don't know, it's just confusing. I want to be open minded to new types of music but I just don't really care about this.

I don't know if it's a coincidence that this is the album I was assigned right after Dolly Parton's passing, or if it was done intentionally. Either way, I knew very little about her before her death other than vaguely knowing 'Jolene' and '9-5'. Since then I've learnt a lot more about her philanthropy and general kindness and so it feels awkward trying to be critical of this album. Country music is really just not something I'm interested in. There are some nice harmonies on that 'Mystery of the Mystery' song though.

Pretty sick

Hadn't listened to this before but I recognised Intro of course. And more broadly I have heard the influence of this album. It feels like this is the blueprint for a lot of indie/mainstream pop of the 2010s, though maybe I'm wrong on that front. This album in particular, though, fits very neatly in the cultural zone of early 2010s student life in England a la Fresh Meat, Facebook, fluorescent paint etc. I'm not old enough to have hands on experience with that but it's a comforting vibe anyway.

I must be missing something

I don't really know what prog rock is. This album will occasionally sound pretty good for like 10 seconds and then gets wacky for a while.

I thought they were just the Vietnam band, I didn't know they were this groovy

I don't really know what was going on in the 70s but it was probably the last time an album like this could be a best seller. Reform will try for years to awkwardly re-mould British patriotism in the American style instead of embracing this very lovable fusion of music hall with a pop/punk rock sound. If Sgt Pepper's sounded more like this people would like it less but I would like it even more.

80s pop music sounds so good the first few listens but eventually starts to feel weird and bloated. So maybe I'll like this album less in future but for now I like it. The covers are nice.

Hearing this shit in 1971 would've blown my socks off

Not terrible but wasn't feeling this at all.

This is insane. I've heard some of the nice Cure songs but this is like nothing I've ever listened to in the way it wraps you up in this weird atmosphere. Will have to listen to more.

I kind of vibed with this but it really creeped me out listening to it while walking around at night. Also lets be real not a single song on here needs to be longer than 5 minutes.
