Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

An album that requires endurance. These are huge songs, and there are a lot of them It isn't hard to pay attention and listen to this one, but that's not to say you don't need stamina. The songs are great. Read a few reviews by Christgau calling Elton a machine. His piano playing and ability to fill the album with energy are certainly machianic. But I also thought of how Joni Mitchell and Carole King talk about the pop music "machine". Reading about how Elton is not actually writing these songs made that description even more apt. And of course there is something not earnest here, before he came out in 76' and 92'.
