American Idiot
Green Day
Ok I haven’t listened to this since I was in middle school and I forgot how hard this album goes. Bangers and bops the whole way down. It also seems like there’s a sort of worldview/personal mythology that this album is steeped in that’s a little cringe but also fascinating. A weird balance of “woe is me” and raging against the machine. Who’s Jesus of suburbia? Who’s jimmy? Also, I love a medley and this album delivers well crafted medleys multiple times. Listening also with an ear for a new karaoke songs but everything with potential is too long (downside of medleys). Also, this guy is saying faggot a lot for a straight guy - remember the early 2000s?? Had to skip wake me up when Septemeber ends bc it was too sad. Overall, loved it.

More Songs About Buildings And Food
Talking Heads
Listening to this one in the airport heading to SLC. I’ve been absolutely ruined by the stop making sense live album - I love so many of these songs already but the live versions > album version just bc of familiarity right now. Overall, loved it, will listen again once my obsession with stop making sense subsides.

Wild Is The Wind
Nina Simone
Nina Simone is one of the greats. I love her voice and she’s such a natural talent on the piano. This album was beautiful - a bit too sad for me for day to day listening, but I will be pulling the first song on to my 2024 playlist. Would put this album on if I needed a blues/jazz classics vibe but wanted to make ppl cry.

Dummy
Portishead
Ultimately not for me. It was a little like listening to enya w heavier drums/synth-y beats. I think they’re doing what they’re doing well! I would put this album on if I was trying to host a sexy vibe-y cocktail party, or something like that.

Paul Simon
Paul Simon
NOW THATS WHAT I CALL MUSIC!!! I’ve never listened to this one all the way through, and it was full of gems and fun little musical moments, and then the songs I already knew were like running into old friends. The Americana genre owes Paul Simon so much. Listened to this while driving through Utah and could really feel Paul’s love for the USA, which feels so unattainable these days. Will be listening again.

Prince
Prince is a real sexual freak, has anyone else noticed that???
Thoroughly enjoyed this album. So 80s in the best way. And his voice! Incredible. I would throw this on if I had some conservative Christians in my house that I wanted to leave.

Really fun album, need to revisit bc I was listening on a plane from Portland to DC, so I was missing the finer points. But I like the vibe! Seemed like something I could dance to

Aftermath
The Rolling Stones
Ok NOW I get why the RS are always compared w the Beatles. This album has the same DNA as some early Beatles stuff. Loved it, would listen again. Listened on a plane ride from Seattle to Dulles so I need to listen again to get the full experience

Amazing. What a talent. Love her voice and piano playing. Made me think of a friend from college who listened to this album on repeat while on a road trip. Already had a few favorites on this album & found a few more!

...The Dandy Warhols Come Down
The Dandy Warhols
Loved the first half, they lost me a bit in the 2nd half. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that I love “shoegaze” rock

3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days In The Life Of...
Arrested Development
Loved this album. I’ve never heard of this band & this album came out the year I was born. I liked the themes they were sinigng about, and it was lots of fun beginning to end. I’d put this album on if I’m having a hard time & need a boost

R.E.M.
Easy listening, and I mean that in the best way. Lots of fun, love their style. My mom used to always say that she wants me to throw her ashes on the lead singer of R.E.M when she dies. Because my mom loves them, and I think we listened to this album when I was growing up, this is deeply comforting and enjoyable to me.

A soundtrack?? Is one of the 1001 albums I MUST listen to before I die???? To be fair I really enjoyed it. Dark and weird and made me want to dance. It didn’t make me want to see the movie tho!! Too sad.

This album was pretty meh for me, which is surprising bc it seems like something I’d like - dark, melodic, moody, ect. But it wasn’t really doing it for me today!

I have never heard of this guy and I randomly LOVED this album. It came out the year I was born and felt very familiar, reminded my of stuff my dad listened to growing up. I liked that it was a little bit folksy, and he kept it interesting w the song structures.
