Rocks by Aerosmith

Grew up with Aerosmith and reckon this is one of their best albums. Band rocks hard here!

Harvest by Neil Young
Apr 20 2024

While I wouldn't call myself a fan of country rock this was a really solid album. The highlights here are definitely the two lead singles Heart of Gold and Old Man, but the songwriting and lyricism on display is excellent across the board.

Let's Stay Together by Al Green
Apr 21 2024

While I massively respect Al Green for his influence and contributions to music, I can't say anything about this album jumped out at me. It's a very consistent, solid album, but a lot of the songs end up blending into one another.

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
Apr 22 2024

An insanely influential and creative album. Still stands out today as a unique album with a lot of variety, and can only imagine what it must have felt like to listeners in the 60s. Stand out tracks for me include Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, Run Run Run, Heroin and I'll Be Your Mirror.

Live At Leeds by The Who
Apr 23 2024

I'm a fan of The Who and have seen them live before and thought they put on a great show. With that being said, I just don't think this album is interesting enough to have made this list. The selling point here is that you get a time capsule into one of the biggest UK classic rock bands, from before they wrote some of their biggest songs ("Baba O'Riley", "Who Are You", "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc.) You can either choose to listen to the entire extended edition that's available on streaming platforms or pick out the 6 songs that made the original track listing (check Wikipedia for that) to save yourself about 40 minutes. Somewhat bizarrely, of the original 6 song track listing, 3 songs are covers. And the song most people are going to recognise ("My Generation") becomes a tedious jam/medley session that goes on for close to 15 minutes. I'm very unlikely to ever revisit this album and so for that reason, it gets a 2/5 from me.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Apr 24 2024

Not personally my taste but an album where it's easy to see why others love it. There are some great instrumental performances on this album but I found that occasionally Nick Drake's acoustic guitar performance/vocals would almost get overpowered by everything else that's going on as opposed to enhanced. My personal standout tracks were "Poor Boy" and "At The Chime of a City Clock"

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
Apr 25 2024

Bon Jovi. Arguably the most successful hair metal band of all time. A band who were practically inescapable on rock radio stations for multiple decades and a band who would get launched into headlining stadiums across the world all off of the back of this album. Or, rather, the albums 3 lead singles. See, this album may as well double as Bon Jovi's greatest hits. "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Living on a Prayer" and "Wanted (Dead or Alive" are all here and would go on to be played everywhere for years. I wasn't even alive in the 80s and yet even I was all too familiar with those 3 songs. But how does the rest of this album stack up? Well, honestly, pretty good! Sure, it's dumb. Sure, it's overly cheesy. Sure there's perhaps one too many "WOAH-OH" sing along moments. And yet, it's just a great fun listen. Ritchie Sambora is absolutely the MVP here. Every single song on this album can at least say it has a sweet guitar solo or nasty guitar riff but most of them also have great hooks that you can sing along to even if, like me, this is largely your first time hearing the non-single songs. The only reason I'm giving this album a 4 and not a 5 is that "Without Love" crosses the line from cheesy but good into just cheesy. Still, I'm more of a Bon Jovi fan now than I was 2 days ago.

All Directions by The Temptations
Apr 26 2024

The back half of the album is largely just ok, so was going to rate this a 3/5, but the first 3 tracks are so good (especially Papa Was A Rolling Stone) that I had to bump it up to a light 4.

Apr 27 2024

This was my first Beatles record to hit me in my journey through this generator and in fact my first Beatles record full stop. Despite growing up in England I just never really bothered to go out of my way to listen to The Beatles of my own accord as they're so ingrained in pop culture here that it's hard not to hear many of their songs by doing nothing at all. Movies, TV shows and adverts all frequently feature the fab fours music so I've heard plenty of tracks without even trying. That said, I was rather excited to get this album as my first, as not only is the album cover ridiculously iconic, but it's also one of the best selling records of all time in the UK and up until 2018 it was THE best selling record. So it must be top quality to stand the test of time that long right? The album opens up with a "live" performance introducing the titular band before seguing into "With A Little Help From My Friends" (the one song I was already familiar with on this album) and honestly? Great intro. The title track has a great little guitar riff and McCartney's vocals are fantastic on it. Wasn't expecting The Beatles to rock like that straight out of the gate. There's some debate on whether this is the first concept album ever or not. Many say it is but McCartney himself says the band was influenced by Freak Out! by Frank Zappa. The intention being that the songs on this album are performed by the fictional titular band. But I was sad to see that the "live" sound and seamless transitions disappeared after Track 2. I wish that was something they'd carried on through the entire record. Nonetheless we're then into Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and to me, this is where the album starts to falter. The songs aren't necessarily bad but there's nothing outstanding about them, until we get to "Within You Without You" written by George Harrison that gives a pretty unique sound through use of the sitar. From here it's a slightly better, if still somewhat average run of tracks until we get to the title track reprise and then the true gem of this album. "A Day In The Life" is what I was expecting from The Beatles and from such a popular album. Great lyrics, very interesting and I imagine for the time massively creative songwriting, good stuff to leave the album off on. It's just a shame that there wasn't about 10 more tracks like that.

Stankonia by OutKast
Apr 28 2024

As someone that generally doesn't listen to hip hop this album has been tough to rate as it's the first hip hop album I've been given by this generator. At first I was debating landing on a 3/5 as even though there are songs to like here and there like "Ms. Jackson", "Spaghetti Junction" and "So Fresh, So Clean" there's also a lot of unnecessary skits and in general I find that the album runs about 30 mins too long. However, "Bombs Over Baghdad". What. A. Track. Like I said, I really don't listen to much of any hip hop but this song is so good that it made me think I've definitely been missing out on a lot. Once I listened to the full album the whole way through I mostly just had that one song playing on repeat throughout the rest of the day. I think had this been a 45 minute or so record it'd be a 5/5.

good kid, m.A.A.d city by Kendrick Lamar
Apr 29 2024

Just not my cup of tea unfortunately, the day before this I had Stankonia by Outkast and I vastly preferred that record. This one felt like such a slog to get through. But "Money Trees" and "Real" are decent enough tracks so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Apr 30 2024

The final Jimi Hendrix Experience album with the full original line up before they disbanded, this album shows off a lot of creativity and at the time must have been an incredibly interesting listen. It does run a bit long and drags slightly in places which is why it's not a 5/5 for me, but "All Along The Watch Tower", "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", "Crosstown Traffic" and "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" are just some of the highlights to be found here.

Moon Safari by Air
May 01 2024

I'm only 12 days into this project and pulling this album is exactly what I wanted to get out of doing this generator. I've never heard of Air before and barely ever listen to electronic music as I lean more towards hard rock and heavy metal, but halfway through this album I had already connected with it so much that I went out and bought a concert ticket to see Air performing Moon Safari in full here in London. When an album can sell you on a concert the first time listening that's how you know it's an instant classic. Its the kind of album I feel like I've been missing out on but glad I've found it now. Highlights for me are "La Femme D'Argent", "Talisman", "All I Need" and "Sexy Boy", but honestly the entire album is just dripping cool.

So by Peter Gabriel
May 02 2024

Pretty good album. Enjoyed "Red Rain", "Sledgehammer", "Mercy Street", "Big Time" and "In Your Eyes" a lot. For the time, the production on this record sounds great and the drums and the bass in particular really shine. I do think there's some filler on this record that I'll likely skip through on repeated listens so 4* it is.

A Little Deeper by Ms. Dynamite
May 03 2024

I was quite surprised to receive this album on the generator. I'd somehow never heard of Ms Dynamite before and I'm from London, England where she came up. Even though hip hop/rnb really aren't my genres at all, I actually found this quite a pleasant listen. Not mind blowingly good and not something I'm likely to revisit often but still pleasant. But I'm still surprised to see it here as one of 1001 essential albums you have to hear before you die. It wasn't a lasting success and Ms Dynamite herself only released one other album before fading into obscurity and the biggest single on the album only went #2 on the UK hip hop charts at the time. After doing some further researching apparently this album was only in the 2005 version of the book and was removed from all subsequent versions. I guess the author tried to get some at-the-time new acts in hoping they'd go on to bigger and better things, and while that worked out for some ("Kings of Leon", "The Killers", etc.), unfortunately she's just Ms. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee.

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson
May 04 2024

I like Michael Jackson's 80s material but for whatever reason I just didn't vibe with this album after the initial 3 tracks. The great production the whole way through is the only reason this gets as much as 3/5 from me, but I won't be returning to this album.

Heroes by David Bowie
May 05 2024

Bowie is an artist that was generally always ahead of time and this album is no different since by this point he was starting to experiment with "electronic" music which would go on to influence countless artists. The first half of this album is mostly similar to his prior albums and delivers some of the albums highlights in "Joe the Lion", the title track and "Blackout". The second half is mostly instrumental tracks where the experimentation with electronic music is really pushed to the forefront, and while this is a less interesting listen in 2024, I imagine that this must have been quite a unique experience way back in the 70s. The album then ends with "The Secret Life of Arabia" which is another highlight from this album. All in all, a solid jam.

She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper
May 06 2024

I was excited to hear this album in full as I really like the two massive singles "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" but I was rather disappointed to find that the other songs on this record aren't nearly as good. There's an awful lot of filler to be found here. If I had to pick album highlights from the non-singles then I guess I'd go with "She Bop" and "Yeah Yeah". Still, it's hard to give this less than 3* knowing how good those singles are.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
May 07 2024

Have never listened to Joy Division before this list but was very aware of them and that iconic album cover. Enjoyed listening to this album quite a bit but for some reason once I stopped I was struggling to recall things that jumped out at me, so had to listen to the whole thing about 3-4 times to really try get it to stick. The highlights for me are "Shadowplay", "Disorder", "New Dawn Fades" and "Interzone". Pretty cool album.

May 08 2024

First Devon record I've listened to and just all around a super cool record, feels like the absolute perfect stepping stone between the punk rock of the late 70s and the synth pop that'd be so prevalent throughout much of the 80s. Personal favourite tracks are "Mongoloid", "Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy", "Come Back Jonee" and "Uncontrollable Urge".

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
May 09 2024

Just a very solid album. Not quite enough to merit the 5/5 but definitely a good time. Highlight tracks include "Pump It Up", "You Belong To Me", "Hand In Hand", "Lip Service" and "Living In Paradise".

Savane by Ali Farka Touré
May 10 2024

This is a genuinely interesting, unique sounding album which I'm glad to have heard. However, I think this is best suited to listening while travelling across a scorching hot desert as opposed to rainy London.

Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
May 11 2024

It's a pleasant enough sounding album and the vocal harmonies are very pretty sounding but there wasn't really a standout track to speak of and ultimately it just didn't feel like a very memorable experience. I don't see myself coming back to this album much.

Colour By Numbers by Culture Club
May 13 2024

I'm sorry but this album doesn't deserve to be on this list. It's just not a good album as a whole. One massive hit song and a boat load of filler. I know Boy George was quite a prominent figure in his time so I suppose they felt they had to represent him somehow but musically this is just so bland. There are 2 reasons this gets a 2/5 instead of a 1/5: firstly, Karma Chameleon is a decent enough song with a catchy chorus. Secondly, I had "L'eau Rouge" by the Young Gods yesterday and this felt like a palette cleanser in comparison to that.

Don't Stand Me Down by Dexys Midnight Runners
May 15 2024

Absolutely hate this guys voice. Sounds like Kermit the Frog on acid.

Dry by PJ Harvey
May 16 2024

Wasn't familiar with PJ Harvey before this but she rocks hard! Really like this album, great angsty rock record!

Fuzzy Logic by Super Furry Animals
May 17 2024

This album really shouldn't work for me and yet... It really does? Interesting, diverse, a band that sounds like it's just on the edge of being sonically incomprehensible. Catchy songs, it's all really great stuff.

Abraxas by Santana
May 18 2024

Gotta love some Santana guitar work. Personal highlight is Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen

Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk
May 19 2024

Not for me personally but it's hard not to at least respect the musicianship.

1999 by Prince
May 20 2024

My first Prince album and apparently I don't get Prince. A lot of these tracks far outstay their welcome without evolving in any interesting way and the whole thing feels really self indulgent. Honestly struggle with being able to name a standout track too. A shame.

Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs
May 21 2024

It's a pleasant enough album, some of the songs are honestly quite relaxing to listen to, but a lot of the songs just drag and because of that the most I can give this is 3/5.

Maxinquaye by Tricky
May 22 2024

Not necessarily my thing but I respect it. Gives off a cool vibe and the vocals are great, if perhaps a tad too low in the mix.

Bright Flight by Silver Jews
May 23 2024

Another album that doesn't seem to belong to the list for any reason other than the author presumably likes it. Instrumentally it's fine. A pleasant mix between indie rock and country. But it falls down with the vocals in my opinion.

May 24 2024

Prog rock just isn't my thing. But it's hard not to appreciate the level of musicianship on display. There were some great and interesting solos on this thing, especially for the time it was released.

May 25 2024

Never really listened to much Eminem outside of his massive singles but found this to be a really strong and consistent album front to back. While I was already familiar with "Stan" and "The Real Slim Shady", I was struck by the intense emotions of "Kim", the haunting production of "The Way I Am", the lyrics of "Amityville" and the catchy hook of "Criminal". Honestly enjoyed this much much more than I expected to, so I'm giving it a 5.

Slayed? by Slade
May 26 2024

Slade are honestly a very underrated band. This album came out in 1972 so preceded bands such as AC/DC, so at the time Slade's sound must have been really quite unique. This album doesn't really have any filler and is just generally a fun time all around.

Live At The Regal by B.B. King
May 27 2024

A really strong live album that made me feel like I was transported to the show itself. BB King seems so charismatic here and the musical talent on display from all involved is top-notch.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
May 28 2024

The original metal album, an absolute masterpiece. Top tracks: NIB, Black Sabbath, Evil Woman, The Wizard

Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson
May 29 2024

A really solid album highlighting the talents of Dennis Wilson. Personal favourite tracks include "You and I", "River Song", "Dreamer" and "Time".

May 30 2024

Bob Dylan just doesn't do it for me. There's some good individual tracks here but the whole album was a bit of a slog to get through.

May 31 2024

Why are the vocals so low in the mix? They get completely overpowered by the synths and everything else going on. A shame as some of the songs seem really good.

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails
Jun 02 2024

An interesting and deliberately challenging listen, but not one I have any desire to go back to.

Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices
Jun 03 2024

The short runtime for each track doesn't do it for me. Feels like I don't have time to get to enjoy the songs before they end and move on to the next. A tedious listen.

The Bends by Radiohead
Jun 04 2024

I thought I disliked Radiohead based on other songs I heard. This album totally changed my mind. Genuinely great stuff, and you can clearly hear the influence this album had on bands like Muse and Coldplay.

Melodrama by Lorde
Jun 05 2024

Great catchy pop record, very pleasantly surprised as the one song I knew from Lorde (Royals) doesn't normally do it for me.

Rocks by Aerosmith
Jun 07 2024

Grew up with Aerosmith and reckon this is one of their best albums. Band rocks hard here!

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Jun 08 2024

It's a fine album. I feel like I should like it more than I do but for some reason the Stones always leave me cold.
