The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe

This was really great. I’d never heard of Janelle monáe and decided not to look her up when I heard anything. The first track made me wonder if it would be a classical album before the second track had her showing her skills as a rapper however she is not just a rapper and she’s a a singer too, with some songs like sir greendown sounding like lana del rey. There was also a lot of prince and outkast influence in there. This could have been shite and it absolutely wasn’t so will actually listen to more of Janelle’s releases after hearing this

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Apr 29 2024

Highlight was somebody’s watching you

3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul
Apr 30 2024

2/5 Enjoyed some of it but if you were to cut the stuff I didn’t like the album would probably be less than 15 minutes long. The lyrical content was also generally way too playful and childlike which isn’t for me but I suppose with albums like this you probably would not have gotten nwa

Boston by Boston
May 02 2024

3/5 1st 2, hitch a ride and something about you were my favourites This and sly album both done 1/5/24 This better than sly album but liked both

Talking Book by Stevie Wonder
May 03 2024

Brilliant album with Stevie avoiding being cheesy by being incredibly gifted as a singer You’ve got it bad girl, superstition , blame it on the sun - 15th album! Defines being a 4 compared to previous two albums as I would probably listen to this in full again whereas I wouldn’t for the last two that are 3/5- Stevie is a 4/5

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
May 06 2024

Had listened to most of this before and enjoyed what I’d heard but had never made it through the whole thing because of its length I would say from the prince albums I’ve heard this is probably the most diverse he’s been in terms of range of types of song My favourite song is IT but there are about 4-5 that are all timers. He is also incredibly ahead of his time. Definitely need to listen to it more but it’s the length that makes it a bit less accessible than other prince albums but this album deserves no less than 5/5

Dire Straits by Dire Straits
May 07 2024

Found this a chore to get through Mid compared to brothers in arms. Sultans of swing and Wild West end were ok I guess and I wasn’t sure whether to give it a 2 or a 3 but decided in the end it’s a 2

Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
May 08 2024

This wasn’t the worst but nothing too exciting. Thankfully it was mercifully short- not as good as like Simon and Garfunkel or Bob Dylan but not terrible

Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam & The Ants
May 09 2024

Loved this. It was so much better than I thought it would be. I hope I won’t regret later saying it is five stars but I think this is on a pedestal above the previous 4 I gave which was the Stevie wonder one. Highlights included antmusic, los rancheros, ants invasion and the title track. This album will be on the rotation from now on - great fun and encapsulates the sounds of the 80s very well and I’m surprised people don’t talk about this album more. This is exactly the reason why I’ve started this project is to discover gems like this

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams
May 10 2024

I tried to give this a chance but I really didn’t like it. It was a chore to get through. Not for me. Take your Sheryl Crow-Taylor swift-shania Twain coded white girl music and ram it up your box.

1999 by Prince
May 13 2024

What more needs to be said!? Not my favourite prince album and it’s not as good as Purple Rain, Controversy or Sign o the Times in my opinion but it does have maybe his greatest song - little red corvette. The whole album is a delight and the only song i wasn’t particularly keen on was delirious. Shout out to DMSR, automatic and all the critics love you in New York for being great underrated cuts. Anyone else find it unusual that I’ve got two prince albums so far though out of the 1001 I’ve only listened to 10 and 2 have been prince

May 14 2024

A band that were hugely popular who I didn’t like the sound of initially and avoided. I’m sure over time I didn’t mind them that much without being able to name particular songs- one is on the album after this and there were about 3/4 I knew on this that still hold up - it’s a good album from its era and I had a feeling it would be. The last song was probably the highlight - a certain romance 4/5

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye
May 15 2024

Thought this was great and during the first three songs I was considering giving this a 5 as like Stevie wonder and Janelle monae there have been points where Marvin SOARS - although the rest of the album didn’t really surprise me in any way so it never really elevated itself after the first three songs Special shout out to the second track “please don’t stay (once you go away)” proving extra poignant when out with holly

I love this and I apologise for anyone else who will read it but it’s FUCKING GREAT Fred dunks on Trent in Hotdog baby This was one of the first albums I ever owned!!! Love LB fat Fred and fat wes

Done By The Forces Of Nature by Jungle Brothers
May 17 2024

Ok so this was alright - I probably liked it a lot because it was so much better than de la soul and that elevates it somewhat

Kenya by Machito
May 19 2024

After listening to the Zappa album I was at the end of my tether with instrumental. Didn’t hate it though and some of the tunes were interesting as this album is from 1958[?]

Music From Big Pink by The Band
May 20 2024

Can’t not give this a 5 as it was prob better than Clapton which I also gave a 5 Never made the connection that they did the weight. Great album and favourite song on it was chest fever

Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
May 21 2024

Totally instrumental except track 2 which had captain beefheart on it (Camden reefer) Enjoyed this but think I made the mistake of putting on the next album which was the machito one - it was an instrumental overload and my experience beyond suffered

The Good, The Bad & The Queen by The Good, The Bad & The Queen
May 24 2024

Enjoyed this there were one or two songs that weren’t great but about 3-4 that were esp the last song. An album I’m curious enough about that will inspire future listens

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin
May 25 2024

I always said I thought led zeppelin were massively overrated- I liked some of their hits but the singers voice always really grated on me so I was not sure if I would enjoy a double album but was pleasantly surprised as I loved this Disk 1 was pretty much perfect while there were other crackers on disk 2 so I was happy to be proven wrong about them as a band as I’ll be going back to this in future. Favourite songs were custard pie, Kashmir, trampled under foot, in the light, wanton song, boogie with stu and sick again

Playing With Fire by Spacemen 3
May 26 2024

Hadn’t heard of spaceman 3 but really liked this. Revolution was probably my favourite off it. Giving it a 3 because I can’t think of any other songs individually but id say I’d probably give this another listen and would recommend it

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
May 27 2024

Best soul I’ve heard of this yet? Really enjoyed all of this with Freddie’s dead being the highlight probably. Didn’t even have the song by Curtis I knew off it. This is the standard for soul!

Rubber Soul by Beatles
May 28 2024

Some great songs on it from an album I’d heard lots about. In my life was my favourite because I remember hearing loads of songs from this album as a kid and that was a song I’d completely forgotten

Revolver by Beatles
May 29 2024

Don’t know if this was much better than rubber soul but it was definitely great. Once again had flashbacks to happy childhood memories hearing yellow submarine with no irony. Giving it a 5 but on another day it’s a 4

May 30 2024

My dad loves REM and I only really knew their singles so was looking forward to giving this a go and was not let down. Sidewinder sleeps tonight and man on the moon are two of the greatest songs in history, nightswimming is a classic, while the last track was also brilliant. Not surprised at how good it was and it’s a nailed on 5/5 - let’s get a sixer, shoot some hoops and listen to automatic for the people

Peggy Suicide by Julian Cope
May 31 2024

This was really good and I will definitely be listening to more Julian cope. I would give this a 4, it ended really well but the mid section dragged at points. My favourite songs were safe surfer and hung up and hanging out to dry

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Jun 01 2024

Now a led zeppelin fan - who would have thought it, I’ve been converted.

Life Thru A Lens by Robbie Williams
Jun 04 2024

Forgot how good let me entertain you was, while angels is obv a classic. One or two songs weren’t bad but some stinkers too

Teenage Head by Flamin' Groovies
Jun 05 2024

Not bad at all - better than I thought

Jun 06 2024

Thankfully no songs by yoko Ono. Well well well was crap, feel like anytime John Lennon tries to sound like a black blues man it’s just a cringey failed attempt. The best songs on this I thought were isolation and remember

Now I Got Worry by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Jun 07 2024

Some of this was a bit weird and wasn’t enjoying it but there were actually some great songs in amongst this and at certain points I got their vibe. Kind of reminded me a little bit of the misfits but I dunno if that’s just me. Looking back now later at the songs and don’t remember the names of any I liked apart from can’t stop but I’m sure there were a few. 3 out of 5 is fair

Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs
Jun 08 2024

The war on drugs are a great band - I’d heard this album several times before and it is brilliant. Nobody else I can think of thats contemporary has the similar sound of Bruce Springsteen and dire straits

Graceland by Paul Simon
Jun 09 2024

So I had been putting this off for ages and for various reasons so this is a return after about 2 months. I actually really enjoyed this a lot more than I thought i would - it reminded me a bit of the fifa World Cup 2010 soundtrack we had on the game

Shaka Zulu by Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Jun 10 2024

Thought this was mid and all the songs pretty much sounded the same. Understand the importance of the band and their influence was why Graceland was so good but not my kind of thing, nice enough relaxing instrumentally kind of choirs but it went on too long

The Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett
Jun 11 2024

Enjoyed this cos I was able to plough through about 200 pages of Stephen kings IT with it on in the background and concentrate on both

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Jun 12 2024

Really enjoyed this and can see how revolutionary it was. Great start with like a rolling stone too and hard to be cynical after a start like that. Tombstone blues, Buick 6, queen jane, highway 61 and desolation row and the title track mean this is a 5

Faust IV by Faust
Jun 27 2024

Enjoyed this - can see it having been really inspirational for a lot of bands like joy division. So far ahead of it’s time too 4/5

School's Out by Alice Cooper
Jun 28 2024

Love Alice cooper this album was a nice easy listen with some songs ahead of its time and pretty tight from start to finish

Jun 29 2024

First ever talking heads album listened to and enjoyed it - 3/4 songs stood out and I’d heard take me to the river. Warning sign and a big country probably my favourites and would be keen to hear what they sounded like more mature

Pictures At An Exhibition by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Jun 30 2024

Very of its time 1970s and at its worst a bit silly but at its best reminiscent of Wendy Carlos clockwork orange soundtrack. Some very daft and uncool space sound effects but an interesting idea

Pornography by The Cure
Jul 01 2024

I don’t know if I expected this to be better but i wasn’t exactly blown away. It was fine and it was good but it wasn’t the bay thing I’ve ever heard. Figurehead and cold were my two favourite songs but everything else sounded a bit similarish

Kid A by Radiohead
Aug 21 2024

One of my favourite Radiohead albums and I love it but taking a point off cos thom yorke supports the IDF and they went to private school

Rocks by Aerosmith
