1001 Albums Summary

Album started pretty strong, if you like 70s music. I thought Venus and Friction set a great tone for being upbeat and inventive / creative, but the album took a sharp downward turn with the song of the album’s namesake, marquee moon. 10 minutes of bleh with a repetitive guitar hook that they clearly really liked, but didn’t do it for me. This stretch of the album really didn’t do any favors for the voice of the lead singer, and I seriously was unimpressed with his commitment to that articulation style on guiding light. The album makes a small comeback on the song torn curtains, but I could’ve used one more banger to turn this thing around. Overall the band sounds great and they have some mildly creative guitar solos (the cat meow guitar solo @4:25ish on torn curtains will stick with me) and key changes, but overall it was too much highlighting of the main singer who I did not enjoy, and a bit too simple on the melodies for me. Fun album though, especially if you like that singing style.

Album starts with an absolute banger, probably my favorite song on the track. Beautiful solos throughout, loved Boplicity, but wasn’t wowed by anything specific. A lot of the solos felt a bit similar, while they were obviously spectacular.

Really cool, inventive album. I listened to the original album version. It starts off insanely strong, and it’s weird that it takes a much more subtle turn after 21st century schizoid man. I loved the 5 song album structure, and I thought epitaph was also phenomenal, but the other songs fell a little flat. Maybe it was the 20+ minutes of avant garde sound making that they slapped onto the songs. There’s a 12 minute song here that could EASILY be 4 minutes, it’s just sound making after that. Either way, almost an insanely good album, gotta bump it down to just really interesting.

Great album, I kept wishing for the vocal melodies to be a little bit more creative, because the piano, instruments, voice were all spectacular. A truly nice listening experience the whole way through.

Album peaks with the 2nd and 3rd to last songs, until then there just wasn’t really a melody that had me wanting to really focus on the music. The singer was disappointing, and a bit unfocused for much of the album.

Great album, could’ve lived without the skits. This album was almost too crude to be played in 90% of social situations, which might be why I haven’t heard it, but as I was listening I kept pulling in sounds and lyrics that I’ve heard stolen on other songs, making me think this is probably a classic album I just somehow didn’t know. I liked that the person rapping kept changing, everyone was solid and unique, every song sounded different and there were some memorable and funny lyrics. Also some hilariously simple rhymes. I saved two songs from it for my library, 4 stars.

Only a few catchy melodies, spectacular instrumentals but didn’t love the songs themselves. Couldn’t stand the singer. Would give 2.5 stars but feeling generous

Amazing!

Banger after banger after banger.

This is maybe the perfect album for people who KINDA like regular music but wished that it gave them more anxiety. I would listen to this album again anytime I’m trying to feel like I’m trapped in a horror film, or to induce a panic attack.

Would rate 2.5 stars, higher ground was great and the rest was outrageously mid (misstra know it all was mid+)

No consistency, blue lines as a song was awful, kinda bopped to the rest of it

Great background, lazy voice that didn’t do anything exciting. Basically took a trip to mid city and brought back a keychain. 3 stars, should be 2.5.

Steely Dan you dirty dog

Even flow is sick, and release is way too long. This album is the truest 3 you can possibly give, perhaps the king of mid.

There’s a lot of meat here. Nothing jumped out as amazing, but I enjoyed my whole way through this album and the vibe could match a lot of situations. You could kill 2 great hours of aux at a chill campfire hangout with this album, true 4 star.

Excellent, not gonna save any songs but what a joy to listen to this album. Could’ve done without the San Quentin reprise, still an honest 4

Basic, good I guess… 3.5 here but I’m leaning downwards

Just so many absolute classics in this album, there are no skips. I didn’t LOVE get it right the first time, but I loved every other song. The album title song (strangers) was sick and I’m surprised I hadn’t heard it before. Has to be 5 stars.

Among the worst! Probably deserves 1.5 for not being distinctly uncomfortable, but this album deserves a LOW ranking.

Take music away from the French!

Song 1 didn’t need to be 25 minutes long. This album is more interesting when you read about the concert and the circumstances that led to this tinny sounding piano performance. It’s a beautiful listen and a great jazz peace that can be enjoyed by people who aren’t obsessed with jazz, that said, you might be left wanting that some melodies don’t get a little more life of their own, and I wasn’t often blown away by the technical performance of the pianist. But as I’m listening to part 4, it’s pretty cool to hear him settle into the sound of the instrument while he delivers a soft, easy exit. Idk, 3.5 stars probably but I’ll give it a 4 for a solid performance.
