Highway to Hell by AC/DC

As with a lot of people, I'm familiar with AC/DC hits but I don't think I'd ever listened to an album other thab maybe Back In Black. Another review said they thought Touch Too Much was theur favourite song. I'd not heard it before but found myself whistling along and even air drumming on a first listen. As a band they obviously have a distinct sound, but unlike others where that can feel repetitive, AC/DC feel like they've explored every edge of their style to produce so many high quality songs. Another album I'd describe as a lot of fun and easy to get into.

Odessey And Oracle by The Zombies

Needed more than one listen. Time of the Season felt quite different to the rest of the album.

This was just a lot of fun.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins
Jan 29 2025

Not for me. I appreciated the use of eastern trill vocals on Amelia. But generally the sound was too similar throughout for me to get into. I did like the sound on Beatrix and Domino had a clear sense of building to an ending. The rif on Persephone I quite enjoyed. The gibberish lyrics felt always slightly out of touch, like I could maybe hear real words in them but not if I listened closer. It's clever but left me feeling frustrated. Other reviews have talked about this being a good listen for specific circumstances. I can see that. I've enjoyed post-rock and thought this might be similar but it's not as emotive. Persephone has a sound closer to that and had sounds I enjoyed.

Transformer by Lou Reed
Jan 30 2025

Two songs that really captured a mood. Couple of other hits and a generally high level for everything else. I feel like this album gives a window into early 79a New York.

L'Eau Rouge by The Young Gods
Feb 05 2025

Saw some of the reviews before I listened so went into this braced. I think they were quite accurate because I recall saying to my partner during the first song "Oh no, I've reached the Wonka tunnel". I actually think not understanding a word of french made this easier to listen to and made me focus almost entirely on the sound rather thsn content. I thought the sound was pretty good. Once past the first songs Wonka weirdness, it was a bit more typical industrial. Another review said the high production (I agree) could be seen as con in terms of industrial sound. Sometimes I thought so, others I didn't. I imagine entirely unintentionally, I found the gravelly French sort of humorous. Again, I think I'd have a quite different view of this if I understood the lyrics. I was really prepared to rate this low but it was just weird, which doesn't mean bad.

Brothers by The Black Keys

If I was asked to described middle of the road, this would probably be it. The sound is fine just entirely unremarkable.

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder
Feb 13 2025

Damn Stevie, leave some hooks for the rest of us! First album I'd not heard before that I instantly understood why it was special. Initially quite daunted by the length as I tend to prefer shorter, punchier, albums. But wow. A tour de force that just carries you through. A number of hits whilst having a coherent vibe. There are a number of times you can clearly see his influence on others.

Phrenology by The Roots
Feb 17 2025

Really interesting use of different genres. Clearly very experimental at times and still enjoyable to listen to.

Slipknot by Slipknot
Feb 20 2025

I'm a metal fan. I've enjoy a lot of heavier songs, volumn, dark lyrics, screaming etc. I just didn't really get on with this. I remember thinking Slipknot were gimmicky when they first made it big when I was younger. I'd not listened to them before and was at pains to try and come into this with an open mind but honestly, this was a struggle. The production sound was fine and there were some decent hooks but not many and the songs didn't have much more than that. What I caught of the lyrics wasn't anything to write home about.

Feb 23 2025

First and last song save this from a 1. Ambulance... blimey that was struggle. The vocals felt incredibly monotonous on that track and others. I really enjoyed the sound on the first track and had expected I would like this but the rest was quite different.

I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen

This was real chill. Nice.

Couple of hits and generally easy listening. Like a familiar jacket.

Went in with no expectations. Was not expecting trip-hop. At times it sounded like they were making music for a haunted house, at others I actually thought I was listening to a modern Bond film.

At San Quentin by Johnny Cash
Jun 03 2025

Odd to include this and Folsom, which is definitely better. This isn't bad, but Folsom is iconic.

Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective
Jun 04 2025

I put this on in the early hours of the morning whilst I rocked my little girl to sleep, with my partner asleep in the bed next to me. My Girls was unintentionally the perfect accompaniment.

The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips

I liked the sound on a lot of tracks, but did take me a little to get past one comment about not the best vocals...
