1001 Albums Summary

I’d probably give this 3.5 stars if I could—3 might be a bit harsh, but some tracks didn’t quite stand out to me. I can appreciate that this album was likely groundbreaking at the time, but listening to it 50 years later, it doesn’t feel as revolutionary. That said, I really enjoy the rawness compared to modern recordings. You can hear little imperfections—like a voice cracking or a guitar hitting a slightly off note—things that would be completely polished out in today’s production. That being said, a few tracks really stood out to me: - Can’t You Hear Me Knocking - Moonlight Mile - Wild Horses

I’d give this 4.5 stars if I could—reserving 5 for something truly perfect. Incredible music performed with passion in such a unique setting. You almost forget it’s recorded in a prison—until the warden’s announcements snap you back to reality. At the end, they even remind inmates to stay seated until they’re escorted back to their cells. One of the songs was written by a prisoner in the audience and learned by Cash the night before the show, adding to the raw authenticity of the performance. It’s more than just a great listen—it’s a time capsule, a one-of-a-kind recording that everyone should hear at least once.

Fairy tale of New York is the only song I knew before hand. An interesting album. A few of the songs really got me going in my chair at work. I enjoyed listening but not something I would go back to again any time soon.

This album delivers some fantastic tracks. I recently watched the Netflix documentary that dives into the making of this performance, and knowing the backstory truly enriches the listening experience.

There are some great tracks, and the mix of genres combined with modern-sounding interstitial sound bites makes it feel surprisingly fresh for an album from ’72. However, it feels a bit overstuffed with too many songs for a single album.
