Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Derek & The Dominos
Went into this knowing nothing about the album except for Layla which obviously fucks.
I don’t really care about jam bands unless I’m watching live - sue me. Doesn’t make for a great album experience. Aside from Layla the rest is straight ahead Beatles-y rock and blues jams which gives Clapton the stage to shred for an hour. Nothing wrong with that.
Taking with me: Layla, I Am Yours, Little Wing

Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs
Marty Robbins
This shit makes me wanna play Red Dead 2 with this on in the background.
I love the vocals on this thing. Reminds me of O Brother Where art Thou - full and crisp 👍
You won’t find me talking about lyrics too much - they’re just another instrument to me on first listen. But since orchestration is so simple, if I wanted to review anything I had no choice but to read along while listening to Marty’s cowboy cries. Not sure what 1959 Marty knew about the wild west, but something tells me he had some John Wayne posters in his bedroom.
Taking with me: El Paso (latinas), Billy the Kid, The Hanging Tree

Chat, am I old?
This is a time capsule that reminds me of a time when hipsters were hipsters before hipsters were cool.
I usually resent that sound these days (reminds me of my cringiest self), but this band is super talented which redeems the album a little. It’s got the crispy indie-pop sound from Vampire Weekend, bud sadly mixed with the annoying soulless vibe of Jacob Collier.
I’ll never listen to anything on this again, but I guess I get why it’s on this list. SOFT 3
*** For the record I made a mistake scoring that doodooass Timeless album as a 3/5. For posterity, know I’d give it a 1/5. Still getting a feel of my rating system. Apologies for fucking up the stats. ***

Low
David Bowie
Side A was okay but definitely not my favorite work from Bowie. I liked some of the experimental sounds like in the beginning of What in the World, but I wish they leaned into that more. It would’ve been more interesting to me if the wubs and zaps were more present characters throughout.
Side B was fine - some exciting moments, and I liked the cross-cultural soundscapes. It’s actually pretty beautiful. But really no idea why it’s paired with the first half, or even why this album is even on the list
The stark contrast between the halves makes me feel like I’m missing some context to the album
Since I’m not doing this for a history lesson, but rather purely on how I enjoy listening to the music, this is gonna be pretty low for me.

The Chronic
Dr. Dre
Hilarious to think that this album started the butterfly effect that led to Snoop chiefing with Martha Stewart. Despite that it’s not my favorite album from Dre or Snoop or this era, but it was fun to listen through and the beats go extremely hard.
2001 is way better and I hope it shows up on this list. Since there is better content for this artist and era I gotta stick with a strong 3

Scritti Politti
These white boys are pretty nasty! Most songs are kinda similar but idgaf - the production is total ear candy.
Revisionist History: Tears for Fears should’ve gotten a 4 or 5. And I know there are some Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys coming down the road, so I’ll be reserved with my rating on this one.
I did have a blast listening to it. Small Talk had me boogying and Perfect Way is a great pop song even if it does sound a little too much like a Super Mario World theme. https://youtu.be/5oXSJG3Fw8c
I may not listen to anything else from this again tho.

I realize 1001 is a lot of anything. Gun to my head, idk if I could name 500 let alone 1001 albums. I think you know where I’m going here.
This wasn’t as bad as the inexcusable Timeless album by Dookie. AKA it wasn’t distracting in the background of me doing my bullshit ass job.
Maybe just not my thing idgaf

Guitar Town
Steve Earle
Overall a fun listen but to me it felt a little generic. Like a watered down Bruce Springsteen at times.
There’s was some unique phrasing on Guitar Town which made me understand why people like him as a songwriter.
Goodbye’s… sounds like Jimmy Buffet!
Probably will never listen again.

So anyway I spent most of my day listening to the John Prine album from Saturday. What a 5/5 banger.

This band is tight af - some sick horn passages
Easy listening, but a little cheesy for me!
Would much much rather listen to EWF in place of this, or even AWB if the band has to be white

anyone else watching S3 of the white lotus right now? lol something tells me they heard Hussel before composing the theme
i’m usually a sucker for an album that mashes genres and cultures
i really wanted to like this
this album has a lot of fun moments, but it’s kinda tough to listen to tho. not even timbaland could save it at the last song.

Home Is Where The Music Is
Hugh Masekela
such a fun listen
quite structured forms but still exciting and dynamic - heavily due to the solo sections
soloists crush on this album with every track. they’re all unique characters that build cohesion by sharing motifs between each other. these guys love to play outside the changes which i’m a sucker for. definitely a healthy amount of stank face moments for me
that rhythm section is also tight af. they play so well with the soloists and vice versa
will 100% be revisiting this - was between a 4 and 5 but i listened to this during a beautiful sunny day walk which bumped it up

A Girl Called Dusty
Dusty Springfield
i get why this is on here - im sure it’s very important to music history
while it’s not horrible to listen to, i don’t think this holds up very well as an album
luckily for dusty (and her estate) it does hold up as music for commercials, movies, and hip hop samples when trying to invoke nostalgia

King Crimson
what a fucking trip! i’m not exactly sure what they’re trying to accomplish but i do know i love it
never a dull moment throughout the whole album. the composition alone sans-lyrics tells such a vivid story
I Talk To The Wind is so beautiful, and a perfect complement to the chaotic opener (POWER). Orchestration and harmonies are gorgeous. I’m definitely not biased from my years of clarinet playing.
sure moonchild has some very experimental, some would argue expressive, moments and while it’s not perfect songwriting i think that’s the point. they’re not trying to make tightly packaged and produced radio hits - you gotta check out ZZ top if that’s what you want. it’s jazz, baby!
5/5 album cover. can’t wait for yall to review the lyrics for me bc we all know i didn’t listen to a word with all the layers going on underneath
keeping this one in mind next time i get my hands on some boomers

There's A Riot Goin' On
Sly & The Family Stone
I did not give this album its due attention - just listened to it while working once through
This album was perfect for that setting tho. Super groovy, and not a lot of contrast in the album so it wasn’t distracting. I did note that I liked how melodies get passed around from band member to band member. They’re probably having a blast recording this
I really enjoyed my listen, but nothing stuck out to me enough to go back for a re-listen.
Very hard for me to choose between 3 and 4

Parallel Lines
Blondie
LFG BLONDIE - I was itching to get some Blondie in here
my mom put me on to this group via Autoamerican so I was expecting more experimental New Wave, but this was not quite that
this album’s sound is slightly more straight ahead and there are elements peppered throughout that let Blondie be the freak that I was looking forward to hearing
for me it’s an easy 5

This is up there for my favorite classic rock album of all time. Just packed with banger after banger.
I was gifted this vinyl from my mom and it’s probably my most played record next to Autoamerican and Voodoo so I’m coming in with a pretty good idea of what to expect and definitely coming in with bias.
There isn’t a whole lot to review musically. It’s easy cheesy dad rock done right, and that’s okay for me. They overuse the plagal cadence but somehow it hits hard every time.

Just took an all-time with puppy to this album. What a treat.
Some funny moments with the panning on this album - My edible was kicking in as the background vocals started whispering in my ear and i thought someone was trying to talk to me lol
Anyways fun ass album with some incredible moments. Easy 4 and maybe a 5. 4.5?
