Awesome album, can’t believe I hadn’t listened to it before. Songs are interesting, catchy and distinct. Album is a great length. Music has a distinct time and place feel to it.
Iconic album. Some incredible songs here, some kind of forgettable.
Sure, there are obviously some iconic great songs on this album. But there’s a lot of fat that could have been cut - it did not need to be this long.
I just did not enjoy this album. Maybe I’m missing something? But the music did not grab me and I just found it a bit strange.
Tossed up between two and three, but eventually landed here. Only song that grabbed me was Once in a Lifetime, apart from that it just felt like background guitar for an hour.
Particularly enjoyed Welcome to the Working Week, Sneaky Feelings and the storytelling in Watching the Detectives. Generally enjoyed this album but can’t see myself listening to it multiple times.
I did not expect to enjoy this anywhere near as much as I did. I didn’t think Iron Maiden would be up my alley, but I had a great time blasting this on my way home from work. I don’t think I could listen to a lot of Iron Maiden, but one album was a fun diversion from my usual listening habits.
Half the songs I either liked or didn’t mind (Lazarus, Dollar Days, I Can’t Give Everything Away), the others I felt like I had to drag myself through listening to (Blackstar, Tis a Pity She Was a Whore, Sue, Girl Loves Me). Evens out to three stars - no one needs a 9 minute song, Bowie.
I enjoyed this, but it didn’t blow my mind.
I had to listen to this a second time through with the Wikipedia plot page open to feel like I properly understood the through line of the album - the first time I listened I had it on in the background and eventually realised I was missing context for the album. There are some incredible songs on here and also a fair bit of filler, which I guess will happen with something this long, as well as with something trying to tell a story. Overall I really enjoyed what it was trying to do, and thought it was well executed - if a bit long.
I think this has just confirmed for me that I don’t like country music. Who knew a 2 minute song could feel so long?
I can’t work out why this album didn’t hit for me. It was catchy and had a good beat, maybe it was just a bit too kitschy but I found it hard to get through.
Incredible voice, great tunes. I felt the album could have had a stronger thread to it, it felt like a selection of disparate songs. But good songs nonetheless.
This was a great album - I didn’t realise how many Dire Straits songs I knew, but I had a really good time listening to this.
I love Simon and Garfunkel, so I wanted to rate this 5 stars, but there were a couple of strange choices (Voices of Old People and Punky’s Dilemma, mainly), which made me pull it back. However there are some gorgeous songs like America, Old Friends, the Bookends Theme reprise, Mrs Robinson and A Hazy Shade of Winter which I could play over and over again.
I haven’t really listened to ZZ Top before and I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy this, but it proved me wrong. Not sure I’d listen to it multiple times though as towards the end it started sounding a bit same-y, but once was enjoyable.
This had a couple of decent songs but unfortunately is not my cup of tea - after a while I felt like it was just a lot of slap bass and I didn’t really want to keep listening to it.
Help me! I’m stuck listening to this album and I don’t know why it’s here.
A good amount of absolute bangers, even the ones that aren’t great are good. Got me through a 2am run, so it must be a solid album.
I didn’t like this when I started listening to it, but it grew on me as it went on. I found the genre changes from folk-y to rock-y a bit jarring, but quite enjoyed the instrumentation. Would have given 3.5 if I could, not quite a 4.
Unfortunately I have realised I just don’t particularly like country music.
I kind of enjoyed the title song just for the novelty of it, but most of the other songs blended together for me, even after a few listens.
I didn’t mind the first song or two, but really tired of it towards the end.
Very nearly a five from me, but a few songs blurred together a little. I’m not a huge country fan but this album was a lot of fun to listen to, and the atmosphere added by it being recorded in Folsom Prison really just made it. A great listen.
Some great songs, but what on earth is up with Mother’s Lament?
This was cool, what a great vibe
This album grew on me during my second listen, but it’s not the kind of music I’d probably gravitate to for everyday listening.
This album is fine, but even after two listens it didn’t really grab me as particularly differentiating itself from other albums of that time. Bluebird and Good Time Boy are probably my picks of the album.
I didn’t enjoy listening to this. Maybe I just don’t get it?
Did not expect to like this so much - Some great songs in here, but a few in the middle that felt a little like filler. Overall, a really good album.
The only song I didn’t mind on this was Bingo Bango. The rest of it was just too much.
The first song made me think I was going to really hate this album, but it grew on me as it went, and I ended up really enjoying it. Definitely a fair few songs that could have been cut, but some really interesting and beautiful ones in there too.
Great album, some killer tunes. Don’t think I could listen to it multiple times on repeat but really enjoyed it for a couple of play throughs.
I’m not normally a huge fan of rap/hip-hop, but I really enjoyed this - great storytelling and fun to listen to.
This album was fine. It was an easy listen, but nothing really grabbed me.
A few of these songs I quite liked, they were lovely to have on in the background. But overall I didn’t feel like the album had enough that distinguished it from others to really grab me.
This was fine, but didn’t really grab me one way or the other. The violin in Of Course was my album highlight.
This album feels like such a specific time and place for me. It took me a few listens to get back into it, but it’s still such a great album.
Kind of weird near the end, but also has some great songs - it grew on me more with every listen.
I love Paul Simon, there’s something about his music that grabs me and sticks like nothing else does. He has such gorgeous melodies, but also fantastic instrumentation. A beautiful album with a great variety of songs.
The best thing I can say about this album is that almost all the songs are short.
There was a lot more variety in this album than I expected. Generally I enjoyed the second half more than the first (We Have All The Time in the World was a high point, Scooby Snacks was the low point). Nothing mind blowing, but all around, a decent album.
I didn’t mind this, but it did feel like it went on and was a bit all over the place. Maybe I’ve lost interest in hearing albums over 45 minutes, but I feel like some of the weaker songs really could have been cut.
Listening to this album made me feel like a 14 year old boy. I enjoyed yelling along to In The End, but the rest of it all sounded pretty similar to me.
I hadn’t ever listened to Bob Marley before, but I really enjoyed this album. It had some great variety and songs that were fun to listen to.
