Love Sarah Vaughan but did not care much for this live album. Not a lot of her best standards and the sound quality was not the best.
I've never listened to a Dolly Parton album before. But this album was thoroughly enjoyable. Not a big country music fan but the sound is that of the "old Country" music from the 70's that I remember. Love her voice and love many of the songs such as "Coat of Many Colors", "She Never Met a Man", and "A Better Place to Live". Great listen!!!!
Some good songs on this album.
Sometimes you just aren't in the mood. Unfortunately for this album, I just wasn't in the right head space to have much appreciation for a full 60+ minutes of jazz piano.
This was a 90's album and band that I missed out on. After the first listen to this album I was not impressed. Was opening up to it after a second listen. Boy am I glad that I gave it a couple more spins because each listen had me feeling it more and more!! For some reason they remind me of Arcade Fire but not quite. Really enjoyed this album and will keep in my rotation..
Was not feeling this album at all. Not a single song...
One of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time with some really great material. This album was SO warm and comforting. Kept it playing non-stop.
Really enjoyed this album. Not a bad song. Jack and Meg have an almost minimalistic sound that is somehow funky and full-bodied at the same time.
This album totally snuck up on me!! After the first listen I was somewhat interested. But, like most of the albums that have become sacrosanct to my soul, the more I listened to this album, the more I HAD to listen to it. Again and again. Melodic and soulful. Moody and poignant. It almost shames me that I did not know who this guy was. Absolutely love this!!
This album is the epitome of the R&B/hip-hop/neo-soul sound of the very early 2000's. While it was probably enjoyable at the time, the sound is VERY dated. Just couldn't get into it.
Great album. More than a few quintessential 80's classics on here.
I know this sound. There are plenty of other 90's groups that I love that have this sound. Unfortunately for "this group" and "this album" they don't seem to do it as well. Or maybe they're falling victim to not getting me at the right moment....because in this moment I REALLY am not feeling it.....
Gave this album quite a few listens. Really wanted to like it but this album did not do much for me. There was some good stuff on this but it never came together for me.
This album is that old gospel/soul sound that I used to hear on R&B dusty radio on Sunday afternoons back in the 80's. That 60's soul sound from Atlantic records that was more earthy and gritty than the Motown sound that was blowing up.
Did not hate this album. But also not really impressed. Live albums can be a tricky introduction to an artist because very rarely is a live version as good as (or captures the essence) of the original studio recording that many fans fall in love with. I have a feeling with this artist and album I would probably like the studio versions much better. Sorry Peter....
Good album. Took a few listens to get into it.
Meh. This album was nothing special. Full on 90's alternative rock sound but I probably wouldn't recognize this guy if I heard him again...
Nope.....B side is better than the A side but that ain't saying much. Not my cup of tea...
Classic album from the Queen of Soul. Has me reminiscing of Sunday afternoons when my Mom had the house filled with the sound of V103 playing the "dusties".
I like Bjork. I do, really. Keeping that in mind, I still can only take her weirdness in limited doses. This album is her quintessential sound. Moody and offbeat emo electronica. I guess I like it....in a mildly indifferent and won't think about it much again kind of way.
This album is just NOT the "real" Temptations.
Been a while since I listened to this album. Forgot how "high-energy" it was from start to finish. Lots of fat beats and attitude. Great combination!!
This is not my favorite Cohen album.
This album is SO GOOD!!!
With me NOT being a huge fan of 60’s folk rock, this album moves me on so many levels. None of the songs are overly long; but despite their briskness they fully evoke strong emotions and a sense of familiarity. Many of these songs I haven’t heard before BUT I feel like I have heard them before….if that makes sense.
I couldn’t stop listening to this album over and over again. And it only got better after each listen.
The very definition of classic bluesy American southern rock. Feels good.
I love the Stones. But I am legitimately conflicted over this album. This album seems to be the bridge between the older "bluesy" cover band version of the Stones (that I appreciate!!) and the bad-ass gritty version of the Stones that I fell in love with. But I do NOT have a lot of love for Aftermath was not terribly impressed with this “compilation of songs”. Don’t get me wrong; there is some genius in this album. Paint It Black (goes without saying), Under My Thumb, and Doncha Bother Me are standouts. But for me, this album was too damn schizophrenic and just didn’t come together.
I love Queen. I say that as a person who has experienced them through a few “greatest hits” albums. This album, “A Night at the Opera” is my first exposure to a complete album from them. From beginning to end. Radio hits mixed in with other experimental album material I’ve never heard.
First off, there was no way that this album could be anything “less” than a 3 simply by containing a masterpiece like “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Add in other exceptional gems like “You’re My Best Friend”, “Death on Two Legs”, “I’m in Love with my Car” and “39” and this album moves to a solid 4 territory.
The problem is that is where it stalls. Not saying that the rest of the songs are bad. They aren’t. Despite the intentionally weird 1920’s vaudevillian sound of several tracks (which I kinda dig) and a couple of operatic acapella trysts, the “filler” stuff on this album just doesn’t stand out to me. I think it is just too much genre blending going on to pull everything together and push this album over the top.
Listening to the first part of this album was a drag. Nick Cave’s distinct voice makes up for the fact that he isn’t a very good singer. The music is moody goth that sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a miserably obnoxious French art film. The album gets a little more interesting (ie better) once it hits the Lyre of Orpheus. I didn’t hate it but certainly don’t love this album.
I can admit that I slept on Bowie until right around the time of his death. The starting point for me was buying a greatest hits album. And I thoroughly enjoyed it; even the songs I wasn't familiar with. So I was expecting to like Station to Station. Wrong. Didn't care for this album much. "Golden Years" was nice. And there was a lot of eccentricity and some funky elements to a few of the tracks. But I just didn't get it. Sorry....
Great album. Starts a little slow but by the fourth track it is coming on strong. The middle of this album just pumps out a string of badass guitar driven rhythm rock gems without letting up until the almost the end. Standout songs for me are:
4. "Barely Legal"
5. "Someday"
6. "Alone, Together"
7. "Last Nite"
8. "Hard to Explain"
10. "Trying Your Luck"
Just as advertised. A mellow mix of rock, blues, country and soul. Sunday afternoon music.
Not a terrible listen. A couple of good songs. "Red Alert" being the best of them. But for the most part this is just "mediocre" late 90's electronica dance music.
The more I listen to this album the more I like it. It's funky. It's melodic. Some great riffs. Haven't done a deep dive into the lyrics yet. But this album is just full of some good old “close your eyes and let it be the background sound for everyday life” jams. It started out as a 3 for me, and I kept feeling like this was an album that "could" be a 4 if I took more time and gave it more listens. I was not wrong!!
I feel like I should like this album more than I did. It's a "good" album that starts out "great" with "Immigrant Song". But never really goes anywhere after that. I like their sound. And the second half of this album has a more acoustic, bluesy folk-rock sound with some nice tracks. But all in all, not what I expected.
"Celebration Day"
"Out on the Tiles"
"Gallows Pole"
"Tangerine"
"That's the Way"
"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp"
