1001 Albums Summary

I didn’t enjoy this re-listen as much as I expected. This particular sound just feels a bit worn out. Loved it 30 years ago when I first discovered them. Now I found it a bit of a slog.

Fun, nostalgic, and clever. Love the samples and really takes me back to a specific time with this very (at the time) innovative sound. I’m taking off one star for the skits that are annoying and unfortunately influenced other rap artists.

A few great songs amidst many mediocre ones.

I am an absolute blues novice, but I found myself really enjoying this. One of the few live records I’ve heard that really captured the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd. Despite my lack of knowledge, it’s easy to hear what a profound influence BB King had on generations of musicians who followed him.

Some great moments but a lot of rambling instrumentals.

Very familiar as someone who remembers when this was released. I appreciate the message, but it is just not that compelling. I prefer many of his other albums to this.

Evokes a very specific time and place for sure. Back to Life still hits and I also liked Feel Free. The rest is sort of forgettable now, but I’m sure it has been influential at the time.

Love the sound of this era. A lot of songs sound the same and I think the first half is much stronger than the second.

I enjoy balladeer Mariah more than R&B jam Mariah. There were a couple songs I really liked and Mariah always sounds amazing. But, I probably won’t revisit this one any time soon.

Loved this one! New Wave and Post Punk are my jam apparently.

I find this mildly amusing. And I do get some of the cultural critique although I don’t think it’s that sharp or insightful. If anything, it made me appreciate the artistry of the Beatles and other 60’s bands even more.

I wore this out back in the day, but feel unmoved now. It’s very same-y. And reinforces my challenge in listening to albums. So much sounds the same and I get bored.

Like others, I’m shocked at how unfamiliar I am with this album. But I loved it and prefer it to their more well known work.

No skips. Peak Elton.
