Very simple but must have been pretty groundbreaking at its time. Most songs are good but also too similar sounding.
I don’t really like this style of HipHop but some tracks like “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Project Ya Neck” are still good. It was fun to see where MF DOOM got inspiration from.
The instrumentation is perfect in every single song. Especially the high tempo songs are great. And when I looked at when this was made I was blown away.
I can’t believe this is 70’s Rock.
The members of The Police shaped like 90% the Rock we know today. Way ahead of their time.
A little too much Pop for me but still good. My favorites were “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight” and “Man On The Moon”.
Too crazy and chaotic for me. I kind of vibe with the first track but not with the others at all.
Nina contains a wonderfull ability to create soft folk ballads with her guitar. I’m a big fan of simple albums with just good and simple songs but my favorite albums are more experimental or crazy so a 4/5 from me.
These guys are a nerfed Guns N’ Roses. A lot of albums have this issue where the songs sound too much alike. But this time it was actually so bad that sometimes, when one song ended and the next one started, I thought it just was the same song that wasn’t finished.
I did however like “God Save The Queen”, “Problems” and “Pretty Vacant”.
“What do I call this music?” was one of the first things I was thinking about when listening to this. Something about this kind of reminds me of The Car by Arctic Monkeys, but then again it’s completely different. I feel like “Light” and “Perfect Sense” from The Car connects in some way but I can’t say anymore about the genre.
This is a quality I actually really like. It’s nice to listen to music that doesn’t have a clear definition of genre for once in a while. Who the hell hears this and immediately goes
“That’s gotta be Phsychedelic Soul!”.
Micheal Kiwanuka had been told by record labels to chance his artist name because it would be hard to promote with. It’s pretty forgettable because of its length. Luckily he didn’t and in this album he sure wears it with honor, almost like a medal. His unique genre is very simple but amazes me every time I listen. Songs like “I’ve Been Dazed” and “Piano Joint” are both really simple, but everything just works so good together.
The record has smooth transitions, an one-of-a-kind atmosphere and the ability to expand your music taste if you give it a fair chance (trust).
Only 2 things I didn’t really like was the overall production which made me skeptical that this was from 2019, and the drum cymbals on “Rolling” which would get annoying during the chorus.
My favorite song was “Hard To Say Goodbye”.
Too simple for me
I mean no songs here are really bad, but they are just too simple and boring for my taste. I mean the outro “Ambulance Blues” are 9 minutes long, but has just a simple guitar groove and a boring atmosphere all the way through. Some tracks like “Walk On”, “Revolution Blues” and “For the Turnstiles” are good but nothing manages to really stand out.
Simple music isn’t bad music but in this case there isn’t quite enough going on for me so I’m giving this a 7,5.
I recommend this to fans of Bob Dylan and Soft Folk Rock.
Mmm Yeah
The long instrumental tracks are great. I love instrumental Funk like this and the cover art is amazing too. Definetly recommend this for background music.
Classic Protest Rock ain’t for me.
And his voice is super overrated.
I love these Kanye type beats but tbh most are a little overproduced. Like in “Just Might Be OK”. I like everything about that song (especially the drums), but the sound of what I now believe to be a plane or smth sounded like a fucking fart noise to me so that ruined the whole song for me.
The cover matches the vibe pretty well. And no songs get boring because of Lupe’s production style so that’s a plus. Also I love the Jay-Z feature.
A 4/5 from me.
Soooooooo Boooooriiiiiiiiing
OMG just kill me please. This feels like eating plain rice for dinner every single day of your life. And undercooked rice at that. These guys manages to make even guitar solos boring, like in “Flaming Youth”. I have always loved their style with their cool make up and all that, but this was my first listen.
Biggest dissapointment ever. And not even a cool Swans dissapointment where I feel like I’m being tortured. Just a huge and boring dissapointment.
This took my joy away from Rock. I want Queens of the Stone Age jams, and young Arctic Monkeys vibes. Not the nursing home lullaies these supplied me with. A 5/10 from me.
But seriously. I know these guys were really important, and “Do You Love Me” was actually good, so no offense to you if you like them.
I really like this Hard Alternative Rock. Gives me a little bit of Nirvana vibes but not 100%. Every song is a blast, and I adore the fact that they added an instrumental track for the outro. Crazy I had never heard of these before.
What do people see in this???
I am happy that this album helped shape the Punk genre we know today, but I am really more confused about it.
I mean come on. The drummer must be so tired having to play the same beat on every fucking song.
I was angry about the songs from the Sex Pistols album sounding too much alike, but this is another level. For making these songs, I believe that all they did, was take the same drums and bassline from the previous song, change the guitar a teeny tiny bit, and write some new lyrics. What were they doing? These tracks could actually have been named “Ramones pt. 1”, then “Ramones pt.2” and so on.
I mean there isn’t a single really bad song. And if there was one bad song. There would be 14 bad songs. They’re all the same!!!
If you have heard any of these songs before and liked it, I would still reccomend that you listen.
I mean 1. It’s still a classic. 2. It’s only 29 minutes long. And 3. You’ll find plenty of songs alike (cloned) the one you first knew.
What a gross album
The cover manages to catch the albums spirit very well. Disgusting and unnessecary. The frontman’s voice is extremely bad and the beats never dissapoint, if you’re looking for something even a baby could cook up.
It might just be me not liking the fusion of Metal and Hiphop, but I don’t understand a single aspect of this. How many times does the vocalist mention something about how cool Limp Bizkit is during this? It wasn’t cool at any time, but it only gets worse when he chooses to do it like 30 times.
I don’t recommend this to anybody. Maybe if you’re absolutely nuts, but if else please stay miles away at all times. This is also literally the worst album name and cover I have EVER seen before. I mean it. Why the actual Fuck would anyone name their album after hotdog flavoured water?
This is also probably the worst outro EVER. Shut Up!!!!!! So anoying.
Of course credit shall be given where credit is due, so I have to say that I did think that “Getcha Groove On” actually was fine.
What chemicals were they on?
I have mixed feeling about the Techno genre. A lot of Techno tracks feel like filler to me, but some are crazy good. The quality swing is sad to me. And it is very much apparent on this album.
Some tracks like “Leave Home” and “In Dust We Trust” I find to be of top quality, while those such as “Song To The Siren” and “Three Little Birdies Down Beats” sound like something a 4th grader made on their computer.
You really get to feel that these guys are having fun on the tracks. I love to imagine that they probably went into the studio one day, and someone just said out of nowhere: “We should use guns shots in one of the beats” (specifically in “Three Little Birdies Down Beats”). The wierd sounds they bring to the table shape the mood of the album, even if they don’t sound good always.
The album really is a fun experience though. You’re never really sure what will happen next. Will they play some extremely pitched up vocals? A crazy new set of drums. Or maybe a fucking dolphin scream idk.
Metal is really growing on me.
If you have a specific genre that you hate listening to, please trust me. You can learn to like it! I have hated the Metal genre for soooo long but this was finally something for me. I slowly had to build up a tolerance but it was totally worth it. I found out quite fast that I liked the crazy instrumental part of it, but that singing wasn’t for me. But with Iron Maiden I really like the singing when it’s present. And I’ve certainly “been through hell” to find the right Metal for me. Like with Five Finger Death Punch. Damn me if their music isn’t what welcomes you when you enter hell.
I’m happy that Iron Maiden helped me like Metal music and I recommend this to every Metalhead on this website. Certainly this is not my new favorite genre, but it’s great to have a wide taste for different occasions. I hope you will try to experiment with your taste like I have done, it’s really worth it.
A Blast All The Way
I dig this kind of Rock. The guitarist actually gets to blow off some steam on the crazy solo’s. Basslines and drum beats are always great. And the singer clearly ain’t trying to get on the radio but actually focusses on making music they like.
Vivid is for the dancers, the metal fans and the “wannabe 80’s” people.
I recommend this to every Hard Rock fan reading this, but know that the vocals do get a little drawn towards the Pop genre at times.
Cool Jazz, Cool Cover
João be seducing me over here like wtf??
Were they ill when making this??
I don’t like Beastie Boys. I mean the Yelling-Hiphop genre specifically is really hard for me to process. They’re actively ruining great beats and samples when yelling and screaming over the music, and that makes me want to yell.
This was my first time listening to an album by Beastie Boys, but I already knew that this was going to be rough for me. Fortunately I found out only a couple of minutes before listening that this is more Jazz inspired, and that gave me hope.
And while the Jazz is felt on some of the instrumentals, it isn’t present nearly enough to save the record. The Jazz influence didn’t even make all the instrumental songs good/“listenable”, only some of them!
For an example I love “Sabrosa” and “Futterman’s Rule”, but “Shambala” feels like a knife in my h(ear)t.
Some of the songs with lyrics like “Sure Shot” with its catchy chorus and great sample choice, “Get It Together” carried by Q-tip and its lovely atmosphere and “Alright Hear This” that works for a reason I probably won’t ever understand, are songs I actually like hearing.
But most songs are sadly like “Flute Loop” which has a great name, but some terrible music,
“Heart Attack Man” the worst song on the entire album, and “B-Boys Makin’ With The Freak Freak”: Heartbreaking💔.
I am glad to have heard an album of Beastie Boys finally and I did feel like my tolerance for them grew during my listening. I give this a 5/10.
I would also like to reccomend this to fans of Limp Bizkit.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope best for you.
They must have has a vision that I’m not seeing cause this is ass.
Such a sweet soul
Willie Nelson finally made me like country. The songs are all very sweet and sung with perfection. Some make you sit in silence, thinking about nothing, while some make you happy and joyfull. The variation works great.
I don’t like this at all, and I really can’t take it seriously. A couple of hits like “No Sleep Till Brooklynn” are good but the rest is trash. Like on “Girls” and “Slow Ride”. What were they thinking?! It’s also crazy how much one of the members sounds like Mr. Poopybutthole from Rick & Morty.
#NotMyMetal
Metallica was something I really looked forward to listen to, but this was very underwhelming. The guitars and drums do go crazy, don’t get me wrong.
But for me there is just this feeling of something missing.
I don’t always love the vocals when it comes to Metal music. And tbh these vocals again weren’t for me. But I have to say that with all this critique the album still have great moments.
I also get that this must have been super hard to make since it was their follow up to the hit Master of Puppets, so I’ll be looking forward to that for now.
A 3 from me.
Post-Folk?
I love this type of Soft Rock. This is a great example of how guitar riffs don’t have to be hard and complicated to make bangers. Take it easy like John Cale!
John’s voice is incredible because of it resembling a father-like figure. It manages to make you feel safe, and protected in a way. And while you may not want him to be your actual father, it’s great that he is able to get that feeling out in his music anyway. Because most people either loves their dad or want to have one.
A lot of people will say that this a very experimental and Post-Punk’ish type of album, but that is bullshit. Very few times through out there are some examples of avantgarde (“Fever Dream 2024: You’re a Ghost”), but most of the time the album is kept very simple and “Lowkey”. But that isn’t bad, simplicity rules! If anything I’d call if “Post-Folk”.
I reccomend listening to this record, but I wouldn’t say that it was essantial listening. Also trust me here, if you don’t have the time just skip the second part.
