I’ve known it as a general fact, but I’ve never heard how similar old metal/rock is to jazz until listening to this album. Neat.
First time I’ve ever listened to Bowie. Wish it was more of what he was known for and not the very blue-eyed, plastic soul sound that this album has. “Fame” was alright, wasn’t feeling the rest of it.
I went back to listen to Soundgarden's earlier work while waiting to post my review, since none of them are part of the 1001 albums. "Superunkown" is definitely different from their more raw, gritty sound that they originally had. And I think it's for the worst. "Black Hole Sun" is the defining hit on this album. I quite liked “4th of July” and “Half.” I might be unique in that though. Those songs aren’t on their compilation albums. The rest of "Superunknown" is.. fine? Safe maybe?
I love Depeche Mode. It was cool to hear one of the main bands that influenced them. Spooky punk. Nice.
I’m torn. There’s bits of this I liked. Other bits that were REALLY weird and out there. I respect what she did. Would I listen to it again, willingly or otherwise? Probably not
It feels like all the ingredients are there, but it’s missing the sauce. Was cool to hear where the “That’s 70s Show” theme came from though
I’ve been doing this listening daily thing for close to 2 weeks now. This has been my least favorite album, I didn’t even finish it. The music behind the man is fine. But I really dislike the way Bob Dylan sings
I love Queen so much. The loose Fantasy themes mixed with the band’s early rock stylings and beginnings of their signature dense vocal harmonies is *chef’s kiss.* Queen will just continue to getting more awesome moving forward.
Country is my absolute least favorite genre. I gave it 3 tracks, then stopped listening. Didn't want to waste half an hour of my time
I was a monkey stealing honey from a swarm of bees
I pledge a groovallegiance to the funk
Kinda torn with this album. I like jazz a lot, but The Nightfly is kinda missing like… some sauce. Some parts really hit. Most of it is just kinda.. milk toast.
*Coming back to this review as I make my rating in the evening*
I've learned that this is genre is called Yacht Rock. It feels like it's missing something. I'm not into it.
Feels like a crazy man’s fever dream. Only reason it’s not a 1 is because Daft Punk worked on it.
I want to give a 2.5, but I didn’t *dislike* any of it. I just would not choose to listen to this again given the option. But it’s fine. “Blows” production gave me heavy Justin Timberlake vibes (Oh, he worked in it lol) BUT the lyrics kinda really weren’t it. Honestly I was surprised just how many of the songs on the album are sexual in nature.
With these highly produced albums with multiple hands involved I kinda wonder how much input the artists themselves actually get though.
Was going to give a 4. Jazz Fusion is my shit. But the monologue at the end of the album really moved me. So I’m giving it a 5. Will I listen to this album again? Probably not. But I genuinely enjoyed it for how it sounded and for what Lamar had to say.
I kinda think "School's Out" is a more interesting album than this one, honestly. I wouldn't choose to listen to this album again.
Apache is iconic. I was really feeling it, then "Dueling Bongos" kinda killed the vibe and I couldn't get the feeling back
As someone who is only vaguely familiar with Madonna, I can just imagine someone not knowing anything about her, seeing this cover thinking it’s country, and then being seriously disappointed lol.
On a related note, this album is awful.
Being a big fan of Depeche Mode, I'm not sure how I've never heard of The Smiths. It's a more acoustic vibe, but they're very similar styles otherwise. Looking forward to their other albums on this list
It's a nice vibe, but I never realized Reggae felt so repetitive
I feel like I can recognize how influential this may have been in the 60s. The organ is the most interesting part of the album. But it’s missing some sauce and the album itself is kinda just.. fine.
The End was kinda wild lol
Same thoughts I had about Nightfly, I have about this album. I love Jazz. Something about this just doesn’t… vibe right. I’m not sure if I know how to verbalize or quantify it.
I ended up listening to the 25th anniversary version. It wasn't notated as such, but I'm glad I did. The venue felt really intimate, and the show itself was fun and wholesome. That was great.
"Young Man Blues" is maybe more topical today than it has been in 60 years
I'm sure this album/band influenced many of the artists I love today. But this album was very abstract and kinda rough to listen to
Because of how repetitive it tends to be, I'd give this a 3.5. But I can't, so 4.
But I also think the repetitive nature is sort of the point. I imagine this was a go to album for Latin parties of any kind for many years.
Honestly, the title and album art does not fit the music on the album. I was expecting something.. harder, more metal, or more gritty. This is something in the vain of Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, or Elton John. It's fine. But I would've hated to buy this album in the 70s based on this cover and then get like.. "Born in the USA" ass vibes lol
Beastie Boys combined rap, hip hop, boom bap, punk, and rock all at once and kinda lean in one direction or the other whenever they feel like it. Is the rapping good? Not particularly. It seems like it’s meant to be more humorous. But the highs are great and the lows on the album are still a worthy listen. I’ve never really thought about it before now, but I’m sure Beastie Boys laid down a few of the roots that lead to Nu Metal, especially with some of their later work.
Cause I know I'm the poop, steaming hot
Really funky samples and parts of the album are fun, but the runtime is quite long for no real reason. "Doowutchyalike" even makes a joke about it. 2.5 but can't so 2
Changes and FX kinda ruin the whole vibe of the album for me.
I thought this album was going to be pretty rad, until they started singing. It might be just me, but they're kinda more interesting when they're jamming when no one is singing.
I'm sure Grime was wild around the turn of the century. But honestly, these yoinky-sploinky ass beats have not really aged well. At least from the perspective of someone from the US. We'll see how I feel about the other Grime albums on the list, this was the first time I've ever been exposed to it. But as of right now, I ain't feeling it.
Just some solid white washed Rock n Roll
This album is way too long for no significant reason. I'm not sitting through all this
This was pretty influential within the realm of metal at the time.. buuuuuuuut, I don't think it's aged very well. Or maybe I just don't like Thrash Metal. Oh well
