The high notes are great but I can’t quite get to 5 stars because there are some very skippable songs here. Wishing for half stars. Side one was pure fried gold. Side two started dragging.

Mar 27 2026

Really not my taste. No traditional instruments, versatile musicians. Just couldn’t make it thru…

Aja by Steely Dan
Mar 28 2026

Luscious production, impeccable musicianship, tasty… but it’s kinda much ado about nothing, as there’s no real message or emotion driving it. It becomes self indulgent to sing about how your date forgot she’d already seen a movie. Now, every drummer on the planet should listen to it as it’s a masterclass in drumming…

Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz
Mar 31 2026

Sax tones front and husky. Chordal rhythmic strums. Almost invisible backbeat. Lyrics I’ll never understand. Possibly the whitest album ever recorded. Sparse and somehow magical. Rainy Sunday morning coffee music. It’s not going into rotation but I’m glad I spent time with it.

My Generation by The Who
Apr 02 2026

It aught not to be possible for an album to be better than most of the songs on that album but somehow this does it. Drums and bass alone make it good. Not a big fan of Pete or Roger… not great songwriting with a few exceptions. There’s something brassy and in your face about this album… no dynamics, no subtlety that I both admire and get annoyed by.

Pornography by The Cure
Apr 04 2026

While still a great album I’d put this about my fourth favorite album by The Cure. Everything is good but nothing is amazing, song wise. The bass player is amazing, always nice chunky tones and right in the pocket.

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Apr 05 2026

Is it bad that I couldn’t do a whole album of his in one setting? I find his voice too annoying to hear his lyrics which are supposed to be his best stuff. I finished it. A grand total of one song that I’d like to hear again. (Lipstick Vogue) I just can’t seem to get into Costello despite a lifetime of trying…. Sorry fans.

I See You by The xx
Apr 06 2026

Decent overproduced crap. Enjoyed it once. Won’t return

Illmatic by Nas
Apr 07 2026

Decent overproduced crap. Enjoyed it once. Won’t return

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Apr 11 2026

Side one may be a contender for the strongest album side in ever. Just a monster of riffs, songs, lyrical statement, galactic interludes and raw power. Not to knock side two at all but it’s just not as iconic. Absolutely, a monolithic album.

Tidal by Fiona Apple
Apr 16 2026

Surprisingly sophisticated. I’d dismissed her as pop and I was wrong.

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
Apr 18 2026

Magnificent. Went to new places and nobody has been there since. Fantastic rhythms with beautiful layers of melody woven through. Just about perfect.

Third by Portishead
Apr 19 2026

Third favorite of the three … decent… really good even… but missing that track that never leaves your brain.

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
Apr 28 2026

If this had been the first Cure album I heard instead of Kiss Me, I’d have written them off instead of becoming a fan. Low energy and no bite.

The Age Of The Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets
May 01 2026

Meh. Overproduced. Throwback to older overproduced times. Some decent hooks.

Revolver by Beatles
May 02 2026

Not the best Beatles album but it’s still a best ever album. Some filler but enough Tomorrow Never Knows and Eleanor Rigby carry it back to five stars.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
May 04 2026
Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
May 07 2026

Not my favorite Beefheart

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins
May 10 2026

I love the band. I love the songs. I don’t love the ALBUM. This is a case where the sum of the parts is better than the whole thing. I love water, but that doesn’t mean I wanna drink from a firehose. Peel individual tracks off into digestible pieces and I really dig it. Keep bashing me with em repeatedly and I start to hate it. Overblown distortion and chorus effect, incessant nasal whining… only cool in small chunks. Fantastic fatigue is my summary of this album.
