Celebration Rock is the second studio album by Canadian rock duo Japandroids, released on June 5, 2012, by Polyvinyl. Recorded in Vancouver with Post-Nothing engineer Jesse Gander, the band aspired to capture the spirit and energy of their live shows, thus forgoing standard studio techniques such as double tracking and overdubbing, while consciously taking into account the perceived reaction of their audience to hearing the songs live in concert. The album was released to widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its blending of classic rock and punk rock influences. The Globe and Mail named it the best Canadian album of 2012, while CBC declared it the best rock album of the year, later ranking it #91 on its list of The 100 Greatest Canadian Albums Ever. The album was also well received internationally, with Rolling Stone calling it one of The 10 Coolest Summer Albums of All Time, and Spin naming the duo Band of the Year. Pitchfork later recognized Celebration Rock as one of best albums of the 2010s, describing it as "the most beautiful, life-affirming rock record of the decade".
Reviews
Juste, genre, correct. Guys, vous avez rien d’autre que des ptits albums punk de garage? Je m’attendais à plus de vous, les grands mélomanes d’Internet
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Fire’s Highway, Evil’s sway, Younger us, The house that Heaven built
The algorithm recommends this LP to me often, and to be fair, it does comprise mainly of heavy yet agile wall-of-sound guitar that's not unlike what I prefer to listen to. I've always felt there's a piece missing from this album, however, that makes it feel somewhat incomplete and satisfying. Maybe it's the homogeneity of the instrumentals, or how it all seems to have the same valence across each and every track. It's not a bad album by any means, just feels like a snack instead of a whole meal.
Rawr rock
Wow this ruled! The kind of music that makes me want to quit my job and join a rock band
I remember enjoying this at the time, and honestly, until I saw it today, I don't think I'd given it a thought for several years. It's really enjoyable. Musically, it's just kind of what you'd expect—slightly punky, indie stuff that you could probably see on any Tuesday night in Williamsburg at the time. But it has an earnestness that was really, and is really, refreshing after ten years of sneering hipsterism, I guess, and that keeps it fresh. That said, musically, I hadn't really missed it; I've just missed the overall feeling.
Pretty good.
Of every combination of soundwaves ever recorded, this could very well be one of them.
Some good in and out strokes style messy indie. 3.5 rounded down.
Catchy and enjoyable listen!
Really enjoyed this. Tight, loud and to the point, with plenty of energy and some great hooks. It does exactly what it sets out to do without wasting a second, but I’m not sure there’s quite enough here to make me want to come back to it.
Inoffensive (again)
Pues un buen disco de rock con todo lo que se pide: buenas canciones, guitarras no muy intensas, algo de melodía y algo de originalidad. Desconocidos, pero toda una sorpresa positiva.
Yep, that’s 2012 alright.
Enjoyed.
